The first three Dragon Quest games will be compiled on a single disc.

Dragon Quest I, II, and III will be compiled on a single Wii disc to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series. The set will contain both the Famicom and Super Famicom versions of the games, and hits store shelves in Japan this September.

While none of the Super Famicom Dragon Quest games were previously released in North America, all of these games have been released in the region on the NES under the Dragon Warrior name.

No details have been given regarding a release outside of Japan.

We will never ever see this in the west.

I don't know I think we have a strong chance at getting this since Nintendo has been trying to expand Dragon Quest series in the west since Dragon Quest IX.

If we get it they will strip the Super Famicom games out.  Otherwise they have to translate them and I really doubt they care enough to bother.

Call me crazy, but I think this may only come to the west as a preorder bonus for DQX.

I think that's more possible than a standalone release, because the 25th anniversary for the series' release in North America is in 2014. It still has a very slim chance of happening, but the only reason it has any chance at all is because of DQX.

I don't see this collection ever coming over here to North America (not that I mind because I hate the series).  Granted, DQ IX has made big in-roads in establishing a DQ fandom in NA, but it's still a very niche franchise.  I don't see a $30-$40 ROM disc of NES titles (and likely untranslated SNES ROMs) selling well over here.  We just don't have the ridiculous level of nostalgia for the franchise that Japan does.  I'm not sure even Final Fantasy could get away with something similar that's not a digital download or a partial remake.

I do agree with the idea of making it a pre-order bonus on DQ X, though.  That would be pretty smart marketing.

With all the work required to translate the SNES games, I agree this release will probably be Japan-only. If Square Enix did bother localizing it, they would probably have to sell it as a separate retail game to recoup those costs. It would be a niche collector's item, but I for one would love to play those SNES versions for the first time. Otherwise, they should just release all of the NES games on Virtual Console prior to DQX. The fourth game in particular is pretty expensive on the used market (it was released here well after the SNES launch).
