The green-suited plumber is returning for the second round.

Luigi will be returning as a playable character in Super Mario Galaxy 2, according to Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy 2 YouTube Transmissions.

The past transmissions have showed off different aspects of gameplay, but the eighth entry reveals Luigi as another playable character.

It is unknown whether or not he will assume his role as the reward for collecting all the stars, or if players will be able to choose him from the start.

We'll find out more as we get closer to Super Mario Galaxy 2's May 23 release date.

Talkback

Fucking SPOILERS, Neal. GORSH!

OH MY GOSH THE GAME IS RUINED FOR ME

vuduMay 05, 2010

I know you two are joking, but I'm not.  I don't much care for this.

Do you remember the feeling you had when you completed Star Road in Super Mario World and were sent back to the first stage only now all the Koopa shells had been replaced with Mario masks?  You're never going to experience a feeling like that ever again.

TJ SpykeMay 05, 2010

For the original game it would have been a spoiler. I don't think it's a big shock that he will also be in the sequel.

Ian SaneMay 05, 2010

I'm of the idea that specific features of new games should not be considered news items unless it's something that would appear in the manual.  Maybe this would be, hard to say, but it seems that ANY info is freely shared in the headlines.  And this isn't an NWR knock this is something every site does.

Such-and-such game to have online multiplayer is a news item.  This is no spoiler.  It's a feature of the game.  You'll know the game has it the second you turn the game on.  But such-and-such character to return or such-and-such unlockable revealed is a SPOILER, so don't mention it.

Yoshi is no big deal for this game because he's on the damn cover.  But this doesn't sound like something that was going to be out-in-the-open.  If Joe Blow, buying the game without knowing anything about it, wouldn't know about something from the ads, the back of the box or the manual then it's a spoiler.

At this point Nintendo might well just show us the ending of the game.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 05, 2010

And you'd still post it.

You guys need to stop posting these types of news tidbits.
For those pretty much saying that this isn't a big deal what if people want to find about this type of stuff on our own. It pretty much messes up the experance of knowing things beforehand before you get to find out about it. Another thing there could be people that just stopped playing Galaxy after they got 60 stars and didn't get all the stars.

So yeah cut down on the spoiler news staff.

If Nintendo deems to release something TO THE PRESS AND PUBLIC, then it's not a spoiler.

It's not like this is a rumor or something we secured from an inside source. This is public knowledge.

For fuck's sake, people.

BeautifulShyMay 05, 2010

So because Nintendo releases something to the public and press it is deemed not a spoiler. Don't you think it is up to the customer to decide what is a spoiler and what isn't a spoiler?

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorMay 05, 2010

Nope. It's up the manufacturer/developer of a product to decide what's vital pre-purchase information and what could potentially lessen the experience. It's on them to make that call. If you're the kind of person who has strict guidelines on what is and what isn't a "spoiler," then you're in a slim, hardcore community, which begs this question: if you're on a media blackout for SMG2, why are you visiting a Nintendo-based website?

Seriously, Maxi, the only ones that would care are the die hard fans who put so much thought and emphasis on these things. The average fan and consumers are likely to see these videos and say "Oh, that's neat!", and think nothing else of it.

Want proof of it? Nintendo posts their trailers on the Nintendo Channel (a channel designed for the new Wii audience). These trailers are the most watched videos on the channel, many of them including "spoilers". What does this say to me? It says that people don't mind being spoiled as long as they can watch the latest footage.

Plus, Nintendo knows what they are doing. In the first Galaxy, they did keep Luigi a secret because his inclusion was far more significant there than in the sequel. That was the first time Luigi was a PLAYABLE character in a 3D Mario game (while technically Mario 64 DS was the first, it was a remake). Nintendo did their best to hide this surprise from fans (the spoiler came from a guide scan). But with this trailer, Nintendo doesn't see this as being huge enough to keep secret.

Besides...it's Luigi. Luigi has been a staple of the Mario franchise for decades. Everyone knows who he is, and everyone expects him to appear in a Mario game, one way or another. The REAL surprise would be if he wasn't included in the game, or if another character not common in the 3D Mario games (like Wario, Donkey Kong etc.) made a playable appearance instead.

Stop making a big deal out of it.

BeautifulShyMay 05, 2010

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorMay 05, 2010

Dude, it's awesome that you like the community here, and I'd never discourage you from taking part in it, but this is a risk you run. If you're hanging around the sub-forum where we post news, then you're going to see information that Nintendo's made public. I just don't see the point in being secretive about something that Nintendo's gone out of their way to make not a secret.

TJ SpykeMay 05, 2010

People complaining about this are like those people who complain about movie discussions involving stuff seen in the official trailer for the movie. Nintendo released a promo video announcing Luigi, so it doesn't count as a spoiler.

Luigi In Galaxy 2?! Freakin spoilers in a Mario game, I hate it! I'm sick of NWR! That's what I'd be saying if it truly made a difference. I'm glad everyone knows now! As a matter of fact I hope Luigi is in the commercial!

You all should be rejoicing about how Yoshi can swim now!

ControlerFleXMay 05, 2010

All right all right, break it up break it up, nothing to see here. Just move it along here people. We've all seen a trailer before. Step aside please!

Is it just me or isn't this the exact same trailer they've released B4 but tit's just a Luigi skin....

But seriously people THE largest Nintendo dedicated site outside of.... hell I dont know one as dedicated.... We come here tho get the "Scoop" with out the BS... at least I do.

Mop it upMay 05, 2010

In this particular case, I'm not so sure this is a spoiler. I'm sure everyone expected Luigi to be in the game, and he may very well be there from the outset, thereby making him non-secret.

However, I do feel as if too much of games are shown before release, regardless of who is responsible. I know companies want to show off their games, including features and characters and secrets to discover and all that, but that doesn't mean they have to force feed it to everyone. Really though, the only thing I find necessary is to not put spoilers in headlines. If people read that article, they know what it contains and want to know that information, so there's no need to hide it in spoiler tags in articles. An example is when the cloud suit was announced. The headline should have read something like "New Mario Powerup Revealed" so that anyone who didn't want to know about wouldn't see it, and anyone who did could click the headline. To be fair though, I didn't read the article, so even though I heard about the suit, I don't know how it functions.

Now, I realize every news outlet posts the same story and NWR isn't the only one who does this. That isn't the point. Just because everyone does it, that doesn't mean it isn't spoiler material and annoying. It just means I don't blame NWR. They probably don't want to do things differently just for the sake of it... even though Nintendo does that.  ;)

I remember finding the Star Road, and finding the Special Zone was a surprise because I thought that secret exit was just going to loop around the Star Road like every other secret exit there. An extreme example is from Zelda: Link to the Past, where I had no idea the Dark World existed. I thought the wizard would be the final boss of the game. Experiences like this will never happen again thanks to the Internet.

Companies definitely reveal too much these days.  Probably because it's hard to not have stuff leaked.

This happened to me too.  Coolest game moment ever! :)  Though I'm pretty sure they mention the dual worlds thing in the manual.  I just only had the cartridge since I bought it used.

In this case revealing Luigi is probably fine, but it's just something to be aware of.  And while a company like Nintendo might officially release this info I think the NWR staff should make the call on whether or not it's worth including the details in the headlines.

Nintendo revealed the details of the final boss battle in Wind Waker in an email they sent to everyone on their mailing list.  Don't assume that some NOA marketing jerkwad who doesn't even play videogames knows what he is doing.  I remember when The Twin Snakes was in the works an official video was released that showed EVERY CUTSCENE in the game.  Sometimes these companies do stupid shit and you guys have to catch it.

Ha ha, good to know. Now I feel a bit less like an idiot. ;)
I first played and beat it at a friend's house so I didn't have a manual either. The game does drop a few hints about the Dark World though, and you even visit it to get to the third dungeon. I even checked the map during then and saw some of the changes. When I did get there, I thought there was only one dungeon to visit, since only one appears on the map at first. I really didn't pay much attention or give it much thought. :-\

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorMay 05, 2010

Chances are if we didn't post this trailer we would have been yelled at for being "slow" with recent news.

Seriously, I was equally upset about the first power-up that was revealed.  I think I even complained in the talkback.  But the fact of the matter here is that of course we are going to post and talk about the latest trailers for a main line Mario game.  This is a Nintendo site after all.

If we don't like what's revealed in the trailer, that beef should be taken up with Nintendo and how they are marketing the game.  I agree, I would much rather have gone into this game not even knowing about freaking Yoshi.  That said, competition is fierce in the industry and if someone doesn't even play a game because nothing grabbed them in the marketing, they won't be surprised either.

And remember that the good old days of "not finding out anything about the game" happened pre-internet (basically).  Back in the days of SNES there was no internet coverage of video games, period.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 05, 2010

Imaginations and Triforce hoaxes ran wild.

Mop it upMay 05, 2010

The Internet is a blessing and a curse. It's great to be able to find out so much information on games that people know little about, but not everyone wants to know everything. I'm not saying that such information shouldn't exist, I'm saying I shouldn't have to stay off the Internet to not hear about it. I know, I know, it's nothing but a dream...

BlackNMild2k1May 05, 2010

Oh the wait for magazines was horrible, as soon as the internet became accessible, we all realized that it took a magazine about 4 months to to get stuff to print and in your house. We were all outdated.

But honestly, just to appease the complainers, is it possible to be a little less spoilerish in the topic title so they can avoid the news without having to avoid the site and it's community.

Something like "Guess Who's making it to Galaxy 2" or something.

or does that interfere with google searches for news relating back to the site.
either way, I don't really care so I don't want to get involved in the bickering.

I remember the glory days of videogame magazines.  It was actually pretty fun keeping up with this stuff a month at a time.  I used to read a magazine like Gamepro cover-to-cover even reading reviews for like CD-i games that I never even saw in stores.

I would have a headline like "new Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer reveals new power-up".  Pretty simple.  If Nintendo has new screenshots or trailers going then you have to put them on NWR.  Though I remember I did a media blackout for Twilight Princess and it worked like a charm.  I didn't have things blown for me in headlines.  New trailers and screens came out and I just ignored them.

I've got the E3 1996 issue of Gamepro and it's really cool to look back over.  It covers all the initial N64 games plus some big Playstation titles like Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot, NiGHTS for the Saturn and even Tetris Attack for the SNES.  It's interesting to look back at games that turned out to be big hits and ones that they were all hyped up about but turned out to be duds or even outright vapourware.  The N64 stuff includes Robotech, Biofreaks as a launch title and Kirby's Air Ride which later became a Gamecube title.  Goldeneye is glossed over and sounds totally unremarkable in the write-up.  And despite the Playstation having the most games shown the N64 was clearly given the biggest attention.  The assumption seemed to be that as the market leader Nintendo would continue to be on top.

Funny you mention that.  It was pre-Internet Gamepro TV that actually showed me the existence of and how to get to Special World.

Getting there was the first thing I tried to do when I finally had a chance to play SMW (on my uncle's SNES).  I completed Special World and was then wondering whether he'd be upset that his game was effectively defaced.

Midna is not on the TP cover, either the Wii or GCN version. Only Link is on the cover, his human form and his wolf form. I doubt they even considered putting her human form on the cover considering you don't see it until the final cutscene of the game.

It was on the manual's cover or inside cover.

But they don't say who it is, and since it's a new character, nobody yet knows the actual significance of the picture... not quite the same as with Luigi.

That was neat at first, but I find it annoying now. Why does every game need a 60 page instruction booklet must because they want to also include Spanish and French translations? I know why they do it (it's cheaper to make one version for all of North America rather than one for US, one for Canada, and one for Mexico), but it's annoying.
