Also a Paper Mario game, but that feels more like a threat.

Nintendo is planning to release remasters of several 3D Mario games for Switch, according to Video Games Chronicle.

VGC's Andy Robinson reported this morning that Nintendo is planning to announce Switch remasters of several 3D Mario games, as well as a new Paper Mario game. The remasters are planned to be announced alongside news regarding Universal's Super Nintendo World theme park and Illumination's animated Super Mario film.

The news was corroborated by a few other publications, including Sal Romano of Gematsu,  who confirmed that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario 3D World were among the games being remastered.

According to VGC Nintendo originally planned for these announcements to be made during a physical event during E3, but the ESA announced earlier this month (ironically on Mario Day) that the convention would be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Nintendo has not announced any specific plans on whether they'll be replacing their E3 showcase with a digital event.

I mean, I think my thoughts on this news are probably well-known and established at this point. However, here they are again but in Meme form!

This is a trap. Remastering games is a standard industry practice. Nintendo complies, and you complain there are too many ports. Nintendo doesn’t comply, and you complain Nintendo isn’t doing something the rest of the industry is. Boo-urns, broodwars.

I think this is a remaster of a previous opinion/post.  ;)

Nintendo is quite welcome to announce new games alongside the ports. Look, I'll be happy to have yet another reason to never boot up my Wii U ever again, but as much as I like 3D World (and would like to see Woolly World join it), it seriously feels like 3/4 of the Switch's 1st party lineup are ports.

Super Mario All-Stars 3D!

I mean, no way they'd all be in one package.  But damn, that'd be cool.

I could go for full-on remakes of Super Mario 64 and especially Sunshine, but I doubt that's what these are.

I just hope for the Mario 64 remaster they include both the original N64 and DS version to choose from, similar to how Ocarina of Time 3D also had Master Quest as an unlock.  The DS version had a ton of new content added, but suffered greatly from the lack of an analog stick.  This way more can enjoy the new content with better controls, while those that feel the new content just bloated the game will still have the original to choose from.  It'd be a win/win so hopefully they go all out with that one.

The Sunshine remaster should be interesting since I'd imagine they'll do a lot more then just tweaking the visuals to bring it up to the quality of the rest of the series.  I'd hope area's like the infamous Pichinko level will be redone to make them playable.  I mean Wind Waker HD did a pretty good job smoothing out its flaws, but Sunshine flaws were originally a lot rougher to begin so I wonder how far they'll be willing to go to improve this one.

I think Crimm said on a podcast once that Sunshine likely ran out of time for Nintendo to design a "1-1" level.  I wonder if they would finally make one for a remaster.  I'd really like to see it, and I think it would be particularly useful to help adjust to the Switch not having the "digital click".

Galaxy is going to look great in HD, so I'm excited for that.  I hope they do 1 and 2, but I'll take either or.  I'll have to make it a strictly docked mode game to take it all in.

It'd also be nice if they made an actual final level as well.  I mean seriously, Corona Mountain is just a few platforms, and then that terrible controlling boat section, followed by a very anti-climatic fight with Bowser.  It's like the game was a month away from release and they realized, "oh ****, we forgot to make a final level" and just slapped something together as quickly as possible.

Hopefully they'll be going the extra mile to really polish up Sunshine because in its current state, it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the series.  At least unlike Wind Waker where it's cut content got used in later installments, I'd imagine there's a lot of idea's that got cut from Sunshine that can only be done in that game thanks to Fludd.  So hopefully they'll be willing to add some decent new content to Sunshine because the game badly needs it.

Agreed.  I would also absolutely love to see Nintendo revisit the FLUDD mechanic and design some new levels around it.

Screw that. Just make a Sunshine 2! And 3 and 4 and 5 while they're at it. The epic saga of Mama Peach must be told!!!

Man, I would love this to be true.

If they just made Super Mario 64 HD with DS add ons, and Super Mario Sunshine with a Blue Coin Radar I would be all in.  Both games are perfection or near perfection.

I could see them selling them as double packs.  Super Mario 64 and Sunshine HD double pack.  And then the 2 Galaxy Games HD double pack.  Finally, The Super Mario World (3DS and Wii U) HD double packs.

That would be crazy awesome.

Then if you could hire someone to do an HD remake of Super Mario All-Stars that is as tight as the Wonder Boy remakes then Nintendo would have updated most of the Super Mario games to be future proof and ageless classics.

Does 3D World need a remaster? I cannot see them improving the way it looks or sounds. It would just be a DX release like the other Wii U ports. As someone who has still not played Sunshine I would be most interested in that remaster.

Oh God, that damn boat level.  That's when I stopped playing and the fact that I was that close to beating the game makes it all the more annoying.  It's a mortal sin for videogames to introduce some new or rarely used mechanic into the game towards the very end that has completely different gameplay then what came before.  The game is about platforming, not navigating a crappy boat so why is the game putting in a choke point based around navigating a crappy boat?!  With the rest of the game there is at least some choice in regards to what shines you get so if you encounter one that has some gameplay you're terrible at you can skip it and still have enough shines to proceed but that part was mandatory to beat the game.

The short answer: No, not really.

Most games from the previous generation don’t need a remaster, but it’s a good way to make the game available for people who missed it the first time around as well as a-holes like me who double and triple dip frequently. I’d buy The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD again, and I wouldn’t even think twice about it. I couldn’t throw my money at Nintendo fast enough.

A Super Mario 3D World remaster would definitely involve upping the resolution (because why not?) as well as probably replacing/reworking the Stamps that really aren’t worth much without Miiverse. I’d gladly take more stages. At the same time, 3D World is the one remaster I would hold off on since I played it most recently.

Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine are perfect for the remake/remaster treatment. Improve the camera, and I’d gladly revisit the games.

3D World is allegedly getting new levels, so that's reason enough for a remaster, at least to me.  The game was fun, and while I don't feel like I need to revisit it, a slight bump in graphics (it already looked great, iirc) and more content could sway me at the right price.  But, with Nintendo, this could easily be a full priced game.

What makes it even worse is the mechanics behind the boat are only used at 2 other spots in the game, one of which is a ultra hard challenge that requires players doing a lot of BS with Yoshi just to find in the first place so most players wont even find it.  The other is in Noki Bay where it's used to get a Blue Coin that's above poisonous water, so many probably didn't even do that as well since it wasn't a required Shine Sprite.

It's pretty obvious they literally didn't have time to add more platforms to the level, so they just put the boat in to pad out the remainder of it.  There's no way Miyamoto would have looked at that and thought "yeah this is fine" if the game was given a proper polish like all the other 3D Mario's.

Considering the situation the Gamecube was in at the time I understand why they didn't delay the game.  The Cube was really in need of a "savior" at the time and Super Mario Sunshine had a lot of pressure to be that title.

Regarding Super Mario 3D World getting a remaster, damn near every first party Wii U game is getting released on the Switch so I don't any reason to exclude this one.  It's rather telling how much Nintendo misread the market regarding the Wii U's concept as the exact same games are hits on the Switch.  Gamers wanted the games, they just didn't want the system the games were on.

I wonder if it is possible for Nintendo to use the engine for Super Mario Odyssey and then just place new level assets from the old games. Potentially using textures from the new games to make it look all pretty?  Personally I would love for moved like Mario’s sliding down walls to be added to 64 to help gameplay and bring a more consistent play style to the Mario 3D games.
