Git 'R' Done, chap.

Jon continues his half-hearted support of the show by being late again, so we cover New Business without him. James is honoring WiiWare by taking a look at Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord. This literal tower defense game spurs a deeper reflection on the fate of the Crystal Chronicles franchise. Greg gives us a quick update on his navigation of the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 following the most recent update. He then joins James looking into the WiiWare abyss, looking at demos of Fluidity and Jett Rocket. Gui rented the Switch version of L.A. Noire. He's unimpressed by Cole's unique skill at yelling at people. He also greatly enjoyed twin-stick shooter Tesla vs Lovecraft.

After the break, Jon joins us for Listener Mail. We start with a quick look at the "Nindie" event. Just to be clear, the use of quotation marks is meant to reflect derision at such a horrific marking buzzword. We then answer a trio of emails: which Atlus 3DS RPG to buy, getting Wii Points from Larry The Cable Guy, and why London doesn't have a larger retro scene. You can join our movement to reject Nintendo's weirdly paternalistic term for indie games by sending us an email.

Do you have any comment on the fact that NWR went down at some point immediately after the discord RSS feed posted about this episode?

The real answer to the Atlus JRPG question is to buy all of them. Well, I guess maybe wait on reviews and play the demo for The Alliance Alive, but the import impressions I saw were mostly very positive and say that it's better than The Legend of Legacy (which I thought was already really good). Radiant Historia and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey are amazing, so yeah, just buy all of them.

And yeah, it's kind of ridiculous how much better most of the original character art in Radiant Historia is.

The Messenger is
Standing at the gate.
Ready to let go,
Ready for the crush.
Too late for whispers,
Too late for the blush.
The past is mercy,
When the future's glow.
Kneeling journey,
Dressed in a cloak of shadows.
The hunting's grim for the innocent eyes.
Communion's pray is a cup of sorrows.
But faith is colors,For the humbling cries.

...is all I can think of when I hear "The Messenger"

I threw a final $20 on the Wii shop channel, which makes my final balance to spend at 2300 points.  In browsing the shop, I really don't know if there's any Wiiware that really compels me to buy beyond maybe the Final Fantasy ones mentioned in the podcast, and I need to do my homework a bit before I bite on one of those.  I forgot how awful it was to enter credit card info to add points, how you couldn't add exactly the number of points you needed to make a purchase, and how little internal space there is on the Wii.

Despite those things, I feel fairly wistful about the whole experience of performing the ritual one more time before they close the gates.  I got the Wii in College, and as someone who grew up in a Sega/Playstation household envying my cousins who had a NES/SNES/N64, it was an exciting experience getting-in fairly early in the life of the machine, and despite whatever faults the system had, it met my needs great at the time.

There were countless hours in my townhome room with the Wii menu background music humming along while I worked away, and the Wii Shop Channel music is so cheerful and inviting.  I think it's that kind of personality that music brings that I miss being absent on the Switch.

I didn't think going through this process would be so cathartic.

I'm playing My Life as a king right now and that game has some real framerate issues as well. Specifically when there are a bunch of NPCs around when you build a building.

That's actually exactly enough to get My Life as a King and the 3 races DLC and My Life as a King is a really good game and the 3 races DLC is the one I most highly recommend.

Good to know, thanks.  I'll do a bit of reading up and decide if I want to take a bite of that apple.  You think with how port happy Squeenix is that they'd be eager to do so with these two games, but you never know.

I was enjoying Bravely Default 1 before that bs ending. I'm not only stuff now but i get killed by everything. Trash ending ruined the whole game. I felt robbed. Like i wasted my time. Worst ending i've ever experienced.
