I didn't get as much time with it as I'd have liked, but I did finally start the game.  So far I'm impressed that the retro games actually have some interesting ideas, like the doors and hidden stuff in Haggle Man.  They went above and beyond, and I can't wait to see what's in the rest of the games.

It feels like kind of a waste to not have any more challenges after the next game becomes available.  There should at least be extra-hard optional challenges.  I mean, the Galaga clone has 64 levels and two kinds of level warps, but the challenges only ask you to get past level 5.  Where's the challenge to reach level 64 by any means necessary?

The very last challenge of the game makes you beat all 8 games

I agree with UPB.  It's so satisfying to complete the challenges that I wish there were more of them for each game.  As long as only a few are required, it wouldn't hurt the pacing from game to game but would give you more to do after all games are unlocked.  However, I'm still going to keep playing some of these in Freeplay when I have some random DS time.

I got this about a month ago, and I was really excited to get it.  I played it a lot the first few days, but when I hit Gaudia Quest, it just killed my momentum.  I'm hoping to finish it soon, but I have to say that there's a reason I didn't play a ton of NES RPGs back in the day - they're very frustrating.  Where the hell do you get the item that lets you raise one of your team?

Haggleman 3 reminds me of Ninja Gaiden.

God I love this game so much.

It has been said that the sequel to RGC will not be brought overseas. Not enough copies of the first RGC were sold to justify North-American sequel.

It was pretty stupid of X-Seed to even think RGC would sell well in the first place.

The hardcorez of today need everything given to them on a siver plater.

Everything about RGC should appeal to the much touted lapsed gamers.  Forget the hardcore.  They should have taken a page from Nintendo's playbook and shown a pretty celebrity mom playing it.

I doubt X-Seed can afford a celebrity mom.

A pity though, Scamco Bandai did a great job getting the 8-bit feel down pat.

XSEED is a company that tries to appeal to fans, and also try to get what they could from publishers. Retro Game Challenge got a lot of praise when people heard it was coming to America, unfortunately that praise didn't translate to sales. XSEED said that the game started off good, but it didn't have legs.

How would they expect a game that is basically a collection/spoof of 8-bit NES/Famicom to have legs. RGC would only appeal to a small fraction of the DS fanbase.

While I was very pleased with the game, I am still displeased that X-Seed based the need of translating the sequal on sales.

Localization, publishing and etc costs money and like any business they are in it to make money. If sales aren't guaranteed based on the performance of the predecessor, it would be a huge financial risk for a small company which is bad especially for a company as small as XSEED.

I bought it two weeks ago and I'm getting close to beating Gaudia Quest, but the dungeon is just so tough! I really like all the games, but I play Haggle Man and Star Prince the most. XSeed is a great developer - maybe they will be convinced to release it in the future. I mean if Electroplankton can be farmed out on DSiWare maybe Retro Game Challenges could be put out the same way?

Well at least they track them as sucky. Really there is no other source for those numbers, have to take what you can get.

Just picked this up yesterday. Loved the Wizard reference-anyone know if that was in the original? Maybe if there' a third in Japan, there'll be some on DSiWare since they can compartmentalize them in advance.

I was just browsing my best-buy shelves, looking to pick up Chrono Trigger when my eyes began to wonder. I saw Retro Game Challenge, seeing how Jonny speaks so highly of it I had to pick it up. Hopefully i enjoy it as much as the rest of you have.

I'll be honest--I didn't enjoy RGC nearly as much as I had hoped.  I LOVE the idea of the game, but the execution fell short.

I'm hoping that despite all odds the sequel gets localized and (hopefully) fixes a lot of the problems that the first game had.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I think a big problem was the box art and name.  Everytime I saw it in the store I assumed it was a collection of old games like Space Invaders and Centipede so I never looked at it.  I didn't know what it was until I saw it in a forum.
