Electroplankton recording
« on: March 14, 2006, 02:11:11 AM »
Since Electroplankton doesn't have a record feature, I've decided to take it upon myself to plug my DS into my iBook and do some recording.

I'm just curious how many people have done this, and what software and techniques they found worked best?  I tried it the other night with Garageband, and had some issues (mainly because I had never used Garageband before).  I wonder if something like Audacity would work a little better.

Thoughts?  Concerns?

I just plug my Ds directly into my sound card and record songs using Sonic Acid. Its a very good program, I then save them as wavs, import them into Magiuz Music maker and use the equalizer and sound editing tools there to make it sound like a real song. Then i import back into Acid so I can save them as mp3s.

Thats how I trasnfer any song from my GBA/DS or any other game system to my PC. I have a lot of songs from Sega Genesis games right now and am getting ready to mix a SNES mix cd. As for web hosting, garageband is not very good since the require either you subsribe withpaying money or  you review so many songs first. They area very neat site I have songs up there but I dont have enough reviews to get them up for others to listen to.

If you are interested in hosting a song for a short time to share with people send me an email with what your song sounds like and I will consider hosting on my website. As long as the files arent too big.

Well, I'm going for free software here.

I think you misunderstand about Garageband... it's not a hosting service, it's a program on Mac computers.  A very robust sound editing software.

Is there anywhere to get that Spin Doctor software online?  Garageband came with my mac, and Audacity is a free software, that's why I've looked at those two specifically.

What is this Mac you speak of? Is that the thing that runs my copy of (Tiger) 10.4.5?

Seriosuly though - I was not aware that the free version of Audacity allows you to record. I haven't used it in years (a good 3 or 4) since the only thing I've found it good for was to play ogg-vorbis (.ogg) encoded audio files and changing pitch.

I've never used GarageBand (even though I upgrade my iLife each year). I figure I have no need to since I use Reason 3.0 and Cubase SL 3 for my music production. Since GB is supposed to be an all-in-one solution, I imagine you can record via your soundcard's audio-in jack.

Alright, I just checked out GarageBand. It looks like all you would have to do is go into the "Track" menu and select "New Basic Track". Make sure your soundcard's "Audio In" is selected as the audio source in "Audio/MIDI" preferences and you should be good to go. Before pressing the "Record" button on GB's transport module, make sure that the "Record" button is also selected on the new track you just created from the menu.

I'm going to swing on in here to ask just what kind of cable you guys are using to bridge the game between the DS and the Line In input...

A 1/8" Stereo Plug to 1/8" Stereo Plug Cable from Radio Shack will get the job done. The 1/8" plugs are often referred to as "mini plugs".

Well, sure I could just open up a blank track and record, but the whole reason to use an editor like Garageband is to record the different plankton on different tracks, and then mix them appropriately.

I've never "played"  Electrplankton,  but unless you can isolate the sound from each individual plankton (and record each one to a new track), I don't see how you'll be able to multi-track the audio output and then mixdown the session to your own tastes.

Also, I wouldn't consider GarageBand to be an audio editor (it's a basic MIDI sequencer). Sure you can do some basic editing with the software, but you'd be much better off using Peak or DSP-Quattro for your MacOS-X audio-editing needs.

That's precisely what you can do.  Each plankton is essentially a minigame that produces a different type of sound.  Record the different sounds on different tracks, and mix them together.  The fatal flaw of Electroplankton is the fact that there is no way (in-game) to combine the sounds of more than one kind of plankton.

I'll look into those.  But I disagree about Garageband.  Garageband allows you to have several tracks as "instruments" such that if you were a generic rock band, you'd have one track for guitar, one for bass, one for drums, and one for vocals.  Sure, you can use the built-in midi if you like, but you can also use externally mic'ed instruments, which Electroplankton would qualify as.  If you consider each type of plankton to be a different instrument, then you record several tracks, and mix and match as you see fit.

see I thought you were talking about garageband.com a website that lets you post your songs for review and lets people download them, but you have to review alot of songs. I was wondering why yo would consider them because electroplankton isnt going to help you make any worth while songs for them. I was confused.

If you want to geta  good mix though I do highly recomend Acid, you can geta  free versiin on their website but since sony bought the company that made it you have to goto sony.com and doa search because thier website is gone. I think acidplanet.com might still link you to the new homepage but I dont know since Sony took over I never go there.

Its  avery good program to use for mixing your loops together. You can even record straight form you Ds and sample each plankton individualy, then you can make whatever changes you want, you can add effects, you can change tempos, and a lot of other stuff. The other program I use is called magix music maker, but the freeware version is crap you would have to buy the full version, you can get just the program at best buy or office max for 10 dollars.  If you want the program and a the loop packs your talking 70 plus dollars.

I have been wanting Electroplankton for so long now but I dont have away of getrting it since its online only. I tried ordering form amazon but I dont have a credit card and I had unexpected financial emergencies and now cant afford it anyways.
