I spent the last few hours building a birdcage?

No?

How about if I told you that I did it completely with materials I found in the house?

What do you mean it depends?

Ok, what if I told you I used nothing but a cardboard box, 2 cardboard lids, a handful of paperclips, some plastic wrap, a piece of wood, tape and a some staples?

enough replies and I'll post pics. It actually turned out pretty damn good too.
Excellent for just diving in with no real plan and making something I could really be proud of.

I need a hoibby..... looks over at my dusty Wii :lol:

I guess the complete lack of interest and only 2 actual reply is enough. I'll post the pic, you guys don't have to twist my arm or nothin'. So relax.

My girls daughter went and bought a bird with all the money she had left over from her birthday ($11) and forgot that she had nowhere to keep it and a dog that was curious to see what it taste like. So I gathered up some stuff around the house and got to work. I think it turned out pretty damn good if I say so myself.

eh, projects are what make MEN. I repainted my shoes last week. Now they look newish. Now, to go to thrift stores and buy name brand stuff and repair them.

cage... house. whatever. It's that bird's house for now. It's temporary, but I think it is a work of wonder considering I just made it up as I went along, finding new material as I go.

Not bad considering.

Last thing I made was in shop class back in highschool. I made a table with a top that lifted up and out to reveal a hidden drawer. Still have it to this day, but it could use a restaining.

yeah, I think so.

Seems to really like the upper part where you see it sitting on the stick. I just checked on it to make sure it didn't get out and it's still perched there even though it has a bed inside the box.

I was actually planning to modify the box more by cutting out the sides on the bottom box and putting in more bars so that the bottom isn't so enclosed and looks alot more like the top. I figure that will be the main bird cage for a while since I'm not gonna spend money to buy one and I don't see anyone else spending money on a real cage either, at least not anytime soon, unless there is a nice one for a really good price somewhere.

There was this one parakeet that my parent's tenants had and it was very tame. It flew around and would sit on your shoulder. It liked to tease my mom's little dog. It would fly down close, like the coffee table, and turn around and shake it's butt and call out for the dog. Patches would run over and it would fly to the top of a bookcase and laugh.

Parakeets are just smart enough to be jerks.

The reason it wont go down to the bottom is exactly what you suspect, they like to have a good view of everything and don't much care for not being able to see their surroundings. It's a safety thing.

it goes to the bottom, it just seemed to really like that perch I made since it was a new addition to the box it was in since the night before. Besides, that is also where it's food and water is and why I was gonna alter the bottom of the box so that the bird can see out while on the bottom.

I believe it was a wild one as it would bite alot the first few hours and we had to clip it's wings. It also tried to get away while the dog is in the room, and as a result has no more tail features.

This Mexican dude I work(ed) with bought some white shoes and spray painted them black. Therefore, he is a MAN. We all decided that must be how black shoes are made to begin with, like if you watched "How It's Made" they would show the process of making white shoes, then they would just paint them black.

Well if it's pleather or leather, they usually bleach the **** out of it making it white, but I doubt they spray paint it black. My guess is the spray dye it black. Dye and paint are very different after all.

Not a bad cage there. Though I doubt it will use the bed. They sleep standing up.

Opening up the bottom more will be a good thing. My sister's birds are easily scared but one finally lets us perch him on our fingers. My sister and I had some when we were younger and they were much easier to work with than this one. It may be because these ones were bought together and the older ones were bought years apart from each other.

I remember my elementary school librarian had a pair of some kind of parakeet. There was a boy one and a girl one. One day she had each class come in to the library for show and tell because they had lain an egg together. She was so happy that there would be baby birds...until a week later when they dropped the egg into their water bowl. I felt bad for the librarian as she was a sweet old lady but I lol'd at the birds. The water bowl was on the opposite side of the cage from the nest so it was no mistake where it fell from the nest.

Saturday my girl took her daughter to a swap meet where she bought a bird.
She came home and never thought about where she was gonna keep it.

My girl gave her daughter an Avon box to start her off, but told her she was gonna need to buy a cage, but first she was gonna have to figure out how to get money to do that.

We also have a dog that I'm sure would love to eat that bird, so I asked everyone how they planned on keeping the bird in the box so that she wouldn't get eaten. That's when my idea to create an observatory perch out of a box lid was born.

The lid simply removes off the box so that you can clean it out, and you can put the bird up in the lid while you do it so she doesn't wander off into places where she shouldn't be while you do it.

I just found the magazine and scanned it into my computer.

I had completely forgotten about it and i'm surprised that I never posted in the Work Related thread many many years ago.
One of my boys just brought it up the other night, so I came to my mom's house to look for the magazine it was in. I probably still have the actual racket too.

a bunch of rubber bands & and those black paper stack clips.
A few of those giant paper clips that Gizmo used to make a bow and arrow in Gremlins 2
some staples and an empty tape dispenser roll at the bottom of the handle.

It wasn't usable in a real serious tennis match, but if you were just fuckin around, you could definitely hit the ball back and forth over the net. The rubber bands provided plenty of spring.

I thought he she was chewing up a doll until I went to pick it up and realized that no one owned a doll that looked like that.... then I realized it wasn't a yellow doll dress, but feathers. EVERYWHERE.

That's too bad about the bird. A chicken once decided to reside in a barn/garage like area at my parents house back when I lived with them. My sister decided to start feeding it a little food. After about two weeks, our dogs escaped from the field we kept in by running out of the gate while we were trying to get in. Why did they want out so badly? The chicken. In just a few moments, there wasn't anything but feathers left. The black lab we had essentially wolfed it down.

In the end, the reality is that dogs were bred to hunt. We had a sporting dog, and that's exactly what she did. My sister, though? She was really upset. I clicked the link. I clicked it because I was shocked to hear there was something left. Dogs are good at what they do.

I am curious, though: Did the bird always remain in its cage, or did you ever let it out and treat it a little more like a pet? If you did the latter, did the dog see that happen? It's possible the dog didn't realize Tweety was a pet, and he was just trying to get a snack he saw as a snack.
