Yea, great job, guys! I listened to it and I greatly enjoyed it. I look forward to every subsequent episode. It does what my original intent was: digestible news-focused podcasts.

Andy, I'm really glad you revived it.

But if it crashed, that means the original recording should be on your hard drive still, as a collection of AU files.  Heck, at least in my version (the beta), if it doesn't save properly, it will even ask you to recover the files when you start the program again.

It does recover them, just in fragments. From my own experience with that crap, it makes it almost impossible to repair the audio as there are tons of gaps.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive Poll: Genesis Edition
« on: October 15, 2009, 11:45:11 AM »
Kid Chameleon is the only game in the poll that I already own (on VC). And I actually think it's quite good. There are lots of interesting powers and TONS of levels. There are many secret passages in the levels, as in a Wario Land game. I would enjoy going back to it, but I haven't yet decided where my vote will go.

Good to know someone else likes it, or more specifically, someone else who doesn't have childhood nostalgia for it.
From playing it more recently (on Virtual Console), I feel like it hasn't hold up as well as I remember it, but I still have a ball with it. There's hundreds of levels and tons of different ways to go about the game. It is hard, but it's also a lot of fun, especially if you experiment with how you go about the game.

DrewMG - Hell yea about that Aladdin game. That is still to this day one of my favorite Genesis games. Beats the hell out of the SNES version in my opinion. Although that version is still awesome.

My prediction: Kid Chameleon ain't going nowhere judging by this discussion.

I'll call my brothers in Kid Chameleon arms to go to your local Virtual Arcade and be the coolest damn kid in the world and beat some evil dude.

I gotta go with Kid Chameleon. It's hard as hell, but I loved it as a kid. Plus, how many games do you get to play as a big-headed "cool" kid who turns into a skull-shooting tank, Jason from Friday the 13th, and fight a lion.

Wow.  Much respect to Greg for sticking with the Bill's since the early 90's all these years, and overseas at that!  Pretty sure I've never seen such loyalty here in the states.

Well, you have to realize that Bills fans have gone into hiding in recent years, so you aren't hearing from them at all.  They're out there, though.  Anybody that grew up in the early 90's has some sort of soft spot for the Bills (well, probably not Cowboys fans, but they're sub-human anyways).

When I was young I loved the Packers, but I also rooted for the Bills for whatever Super Bowls I remember. My first clear football memory is the infamous Norwide moment.

No way, Neal. There were several times where Rodgers had ample time to get rid of the ball, at least throw it away, except he held onto the thing and was pushed back by the sack(s). When you throw the ball away, you don't lose yardage.

But that was after he had already been chased for every moment of the game.
Yes, he should've thrown it away, but I don't put the blame on him. That Packer O-line was horrendous.

Aaron Rodgers doesn't seem to realize that, when you're a QB, you're supposed to THROW THE GODDAMN BALL.

You can't blame him when he has approximately .5 seconds to get rid of it before that creepy man-beast Jared Allen kills him.
Seriously, the Packers offensive line lost that game. Rodgers played a hell of a game regardless of the circumstances.

No, I'm trying to tell you that we don't go to the forums for news. It's not like you guys are all on the inside of the industry. We are capable of using the internet to find news.

No one is gonna make me believe that no one on the staff saw the thread that started early this afternoon

As former News Editor, I rarely got information from the forums. We probably get our information from the same place: the rest of the internet.

If we do directly get something from the forums, we usually throw a "thanks for the tip, forum member!" at the end of the article.

August 25th, 1939?

NWR recently traveled back in time to the late 1930s. I apologize in advance for any confusion this jump might have made.

Also, we're going to be covering the 'talkies' and the new color movies. It's going to be the bee's knees.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Cooking Mama 3
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:04:07 AM »
This time around, Mama's going shopping as well.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=19949

Cooking Mama 3: Shop & Chop is looking to be a robust upgrade to the successful series. There will be over 200 mini-games and 80 recipes to work through when the game launches on October 27. The third DS entry in the series also has new gameplay modes, one of which I was able to try out.

The new shopping mode is a bit crazy. Controlling a Mama-operated shopping cart, you roam through the dangerous aisles of a shopping market trying to collect ingredients, or possibly just some tomatoes, while avoiding belligerent shoppers that run on fixed paths. If you crash into one, you go into a mini-game where you have to rush to collect all the items that are being knocked out of the carts, or do some weirder things like rock a baby back to sleep. It seems like a fun distraction, and I'm curious to see how it fits into the overall gameplay.

The shopping mini-game isn't the only new part of the game, though. You now have the ability to attempt to create your own dishes using steps and ingredients from other ones, and you can also import ingredients from Gardening Mama, which came out earlier this year. With these additions, Mama will have a more varied palette this time around.

At E3, I was told September. When I contacted Ubisoft to do this interview, they said November.

Part of me died inside.

I'm dead serious when I say this is my most anticipated game right now.

TalkBack / Academy of Champions Interview with Tuomas Pirinen
« on: September 10, 2009, 04:23:13 PM »
We got to chat with Tuomas Pirinen, creative director at Ubisoft Vancouver, about Academy of Champions, which is an arcade soccer game that features a Hogwarts-like school atmosphere along with Pele, Mia Hamm, and Rabbids as playable characters.

Pirinen talks about the game's origins and influences, how they decided on what soccer stars and Ubisoft characters to include in the game, and how the game is enhanced by supporting both Wii MotionPlus and the Balance Board.

Nintendo World Report (NWR): What are the origins of Academy of Champions?

Tuomas Pirinen (TP): Almost two years ago we sat down and looked at the Wii. We noticed that simply porting games over to Wii is not the way to produce quality Wii games.

We wanted to do something sports-related, but with a twist. Many members of the team here at Ubisoft Vancouver are huge soccer fans, so it seemed natural to do a game based on the "Beautiful Game."

Then we wanted to see what kind of game would suit Wii. We wanted accessible controls, tons of unlockables, a story that everyone can follow, etc. In the end, the game concept came together surprisingly easily. Everyone at Ubisoft liked the idea, and here we are, with a brand new game ready for Wii owners.

TalkBack / Re: PREVIEWS: Tony Hawk: Ride

All I know is I won't be purchasing this, because it could've just been a Wii exclusive with balance board support and cost me $49.99.

This game would not have worked with Balance Board support.
The skateboard controller might look similar to the Balance Board, but it's optimized for this game, and I don't think the game would've been very good if it was Balance Board only. Just look at Skate It.

Travel the world on your new skateboard controller with Tony Hawk and pals.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=19927

Tony Hawk has been dormant for most of the Wii's existence, but now he's coming back in a big way. In Tony Hawk: Ride, the Birdman takes to the streets with a new motion-sensing skateboard controller that was designed alongside the game.

This new peripheral eliminates the need for a normal controller in-game, as everything the player needs is right at their fingertips and feet. Players treat the Ride board like they would a real skateboard, minus the wheels. While standing on the board, players can rotate, tilt, and lift it to perform a variety of tricks ranging from ollies to complex board flips. Grabs can also be performed by motioning around the four sensors on the side of the board.

Controller aside, Tony Hawk and the rest of his friends are back and up to their old tricks as they take on vert, trick, and speed challenges in both single-player and multiplayer modes across five different city areas, including Los Angeles, Toledo, and Frankfurt. The multiplayer mode only uses one skateboard controller during its "Hot Seat"-style gameplay. There will also be create-a-skater and online modes.

To ease players into the new control scheme, there will be three different levels of difficulty. The lowest one effectively puts the game on rails, while the other two slowly give the player more control over where their player can go and what they can do.

Like past games in the series, Ride retains a special meter, except this time it does something more than just get you more points; it also activates visual effects that add pastel-like lines that follow you around.

Below is a list of the skaters that will appear in the game:

  • Tony Hawk
  •
  • Paul Rodriguez
  •
  • Ryan Sheckler
  •
  • Mike Vallely
  •
  • Nyjah Huston
  •
  • Steve Nesser
  •
  • Cara Beth Burnside
  •
  • Lyn-Z Adams
  •
  • Mike Mo Capaldi
  •
  • Stevie Williams
  •
  • Dustin Dollin
  •
  • Daewon Song
  •
  • Rodney Mullen
  •
  • Christian Hosoi
  •
  • Alex Olson
  •

Tony Hawk: Ride is being developed by Buzz Monkey for Wii, and is set to come out on November 17 for an estimated $120.

I'm far more interested in the game's producer.

QFT

I am excited for Red Steel 2, but only if the Jason Vandenberghe (sp?) comments over my copy of the game.
