TalkBack / Nintendo President Missing E3
« on: June 05, 2014, 10:43:47 AM »

Due to health concerns, Satoru Iwata will not be traveling to Los Angeles for E3.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37611/nintendo-president-missing-e3

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's Global President, will not be appearing at this year's E3, according to Nintendo. The reason is health related, as his physician is advising him not to travel overseas right now.

"Please understand that it is business as usual for Mr. Iwata, and he continues his normal duties as president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. while he remains in Japan," a Nintendo representative said. "As always, he will be actively involved in all of Nintendo's activities at the show."

In the recent past, Iwata has been a big part of Nintendo's E3 presentations and shows, ever since his first appearance at E3 2003 in his role as Nintendo's president. Usually he is part of an investor presentation and Q&A at E3, but Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime is taking over for him in his absence. It is likely that Iwata will still play a role in the Nintendo Digital Event.

TalkBack / Pushmo World Review
« on: June 04, 2014, 08:09:15 PM »

Is Pushmo World a new fantastic point of view or just more of the same?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37605/pushmo-world-review

When Pushmo World was revealed, some people automatically assumed it was just a remake of the hallmark 2011 3DS eShop game. To a certain extent, it feels like a remake at the outset. After the similar setup and first few dozen puzzles, it all seems very familiar. But as more puzzles and options open up, Pushmo World gets deeper and deeper with one interesting twist after another. Pushmo World is a delightful HD realization of Pushmo that retains the charm of the original while adding fun new concepts.

The early goings, unfortunately, are almost boring for a Pushmo veteran, as the first 10 stages are a forced, arduous tutorial. Even the ones after that seem old hat, but then you start getting stumped, not on something overly challenging but just something you overlooked. You beat your head against the wall and realize it was easier than you thought it was. You solve the puzzle. You move on to the next puzzle, feeling accomplished. That's Pushmo at its best, and Pushmo World is packed to the gills with moments like those.

There's even a moment after about 50 puzzles where Pushmo World sheds any kind of pretense about being just an expansion pack, as it splits off in different directions, with the old Pushmo Park delivering increasingly challenging regular puzzles and the new Mysterious Pushmo area adding new mechanics and continuously riffing off of them. The Mysterious Pushmo puzzles add in ideas such as timed blocks and having all blocks of the same color linked together. None of the concepts radically alter the experience, but they make you approach puzzles in a whole new way. The only downside is that I wish there were more Mysterious Pushmo to play. It seems like there's much more that could have been done with the new ideas.

The base game comes with 250 puzzles spread out across old and new ideas. The puzzles get outrageously difficult after a while, but like past games, you can skip over stumbling blocks with no penalty. Choke points don't exist in Pushmo because you can always move forward. In addition to the 250 puzzles, which I've spent close to 10 hours on and still haven't cleared all of them, there's also a substantial Miiverse and online component. You can download new puzzles from Nintendo or other players. Heck, you can even bring in puzzles made with the 3DS version using QR codes.

The creation aspect essentially gives you all the tools necessary to create puzzles nearly identical to the ones made by the team at Intelligent Systems. It can be overwhelming, but it's laid out in an elegant manner that makes creating puzzles on the GamePad delightful. These puzzles can be shared via QR codes to other Wii U or 3DS players (Note: Wii U puzzles making use of some new features won't transfer to the 3DS version).

Pushmo World is another stellar entry in one of Nintendo's premier downloadable franchises. While it's a bummer that the quirks of Crashmo didn't make a return, no one really loses when Pushmo World is so wonderfully crafted, with awesome puzzles and excellent new twists. Let's just hope that Crashmo World is up next on Mallo's quest.

TalkBack / Natsume Announces Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley for 3DS
« on: June 03, 2014, 11:05:41 AM »

The newest entry in the Harvest Moon series is set for a 2014 release.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37558/natsume-announces-harvest-moon-the-lost-valley-for-3ds

Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley is coming to 3DS later this year, according to publisher and developer Natsume.

The Lost Valley, which is being developed internally at Natsume, features a full 3D setting for the first time in the series, allowing players to fully customize their world with whatever crops and flowers they want in their farm.

Last week, XSEED announced that they were bringing Story of Seasons, known as Harvest Moon: Connect to a New Land in Japan, to North America. The Lost Valley is not related to that game. Natsume owns the Harvest Moon name in North America and this new game is being developed by Natsume as opposed to regular Harvest Moon developer Marvelous.

Natsume's most recent internally developed games include Reel Fishing Paradise 3D and Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3D. They have developed Harvest Moon games internally before, mostly spin-offs such as Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming on DS, or alternate versions of Marvelous-developed games such as Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life on GameCube.

TalkBack / Costume Quest 2 Hitting Wii U This Halloween
« on: June 03, 2014, 07:54:19 AM »

Double Fine's playful RPG is set to trick and/or treat on the eShop later this year.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37591/costume-quest-2-hitting-wii-u-this-halloween

Costume Quest 2 is coming to the Wii U eShop around Halloween, according to developer Double Fine.

It is a sequel to the THQ-published first game, which never came to Nintendo platforms. Costume Quest 2 is a whimsical RPG based around a bunch of kids in an adventure game-like setting. The battle system is reminiscent of Mario RPGs and even features a job system of sorts involving the kids' Halloween costumes.

Costume Quest 2, published by Majesco's Midnight City label, is the second game from Double Fine to come out on a Nintendo platform after the early 2013 release of The Cave, which was published by Sega.

TalkBack / Who Could Be Playable in Hyrule Warriors?
« on: June 02, 2014, 06:10:09 AM »

From Midna to Makar, we come up with ideas for playable characters for Hyrule Warriors.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/37579/who-could-be-playable-in-hyrule-warriors

Hyrule Warriors will have multiple playable characters, and Producer Eiju Aonuma is supposedly very surprised by some of them. We know that Link (duh!) and Impa will be two of the playable characters, but who else could there be? Could we control Ganondorf in this game? Maybe Zelda? Tingle? Skull Kid?

There are a lot of possibilities for playable characters in the Zelda series. We pulled together some we think could maybe happen (or rather, who we'd like to see show up). Who do you think could make it into Hyrule Warriors? Who do you want to be make it in?

Hyrule Warriors comes out in Japan this August, so we'll find out who is playable soon enough. Until then, let's speculate!

Midna (Twilight Princess)

You all may not recall, but Midna’s true form isn’t a black-and-blue cherub in an uncomfortable hat. She’s actually a beautiful fair lady—royalty in her native land of the Twilight Realm—with considerable magical powers. We only got a short introduction to her true form at the end of Twilight Princess, but in Hyrule Warriors, players might have a chance to see her in HD. Though she wields no weapon in Twilight Princess, there’s no reason she couldn’t have a sword or staff in this game, with a variety of short and long-range spells to round out her moveset. And if she’s going to have some kind of “super attack,” I can’t think of a much better one than transforming into a giant energy spider and crushing all the enemies below her!

Zelda (Smash Bros.)

Although she rarely gets to show off her fighting prowess in her own series, Zelda is usually a force to be reckoned with in the Smash Bros. games, with a cadre of magic attacks, a shield, and a handy teleportation move. She also wields the powerful Light Arrow and, in the upcoming Smash Bros. games, can summon a Phantom to attack enemies. I think all of these moves would translate well to Hyrule Warriors, though she should probably be outfitted with a sword for close encounters. The real question is whether or not to include Sheik, as well. I would say no—her attacks are much more close-quarters and aren’t fitting for the bombastic nature of Hyrule Warriors.

Ganondorf (Twilight Princess)

I have a lot of things to say about Twilight Princess, but I really liked Midna and I loved Ganondorf’s design. It’s a little busy, but he looks so bad ass. While I imagine that Ganondorf will ultimately prove to be Hyrule Warrior’s “Big Bad,” I can see him being included as an unlockable character. His characteristic GIANT SWORD from Twilight Princess would come in very handy in quelling mobs of enemies, and he could throw down some magic projectiles as distance attacks. His super move would, of course, involve him transforming into a giant pig monster (like in Twilight Princess) and wreaking havoc.

Toon Link (Wind Waker)

Looks like we’re getting a version of Skyward Sword Link in Hyrule Warriors, but wouldn’t it be nice if Toon Link was an unlockable character? Though small in stature, the Hero of Winds packs a lot of punch with his whirlwind attack, and maybe he could use other weapons—as he does in Wind Waker—as alternate attacks? A sweeping horizontal blow with a spear, or a close-quarters but knockback smash from a skull hammer! I have a particularly insidious idea for his super move—use the Wind Waker to call Valoo to his aid, who would bathe the battlefield in flames!

Makar (Wind Waker)

Okay, if there’s one joke character to put in Hyrule Warriors, it’s gotta be Makar, the little Korok from the Forest Haven. Most enemy attacks would just fly harmlessly over him—as short as Toon Link is, Makar is only half his height! He could bash enemies with his sturdy violin, and perhaps use a variety of seed-based projectile attacks. Throw an exploding Deku Nut, or a seed that quickly grows into a small tree, damaging and knocking back any enemies around it. Play music to briefly stun enemies, then wind up for Makar’s super attack: all of his Korok friends fly overhead and drop giant, exploding Deku Nuts all over the place! I’m liking this idea more and more. I think Makar would make an excellent playable character!

Tingle (Majora’s Mask)

If Tingle doesn't make it into Hyrule Warriors in some fashion, I think Nintendo and Tecmo messed up. He's the goofiest and weirdest character in the entire series, with odd mannerisms and an even odder character design. He's essentially a con artist who drains money from people so he can feed on rupees to survive. Or something like that. I'd love to see him wield a weapon in Hyrule Warriors, whether it involves rupees, balloons, or an actual weapon. You know, the more I think about it, the more I have no idea how Tingle would play in Hyrule Warriors. Whatever. I still want to see him in it. Kooloo-Limpah!

Skull Kid (Majora’s Mask)

Skull Kid could be a good berserker type of character, especially if you throw Majora's Mask on him. I picture his character as sort of a Jekyll and Hyde role, where he's more subdued as maybe more of a ranged fighter as Skull Kid and then turns into a melee powerhouse when Majora's Mask is activated. Unless Hyrule Warriors is the payoff for Eiju Aonuma's endless Majora's Mask teasing, I doubt Skull Kid will be that integrated into the story, but he seems to be enough of a beloved character to get inserted into the game in some fashion.

Dark Link (Zelda II/Ocarina of Time)

You could easily draw from all of Link’s doubles over the years, but the two most memorable are the final boss in Zelda II and the Water Temple mid boss in Ocarina of Time. This essentially would be a palette swap of Link, but some mileage could be pulled out of make this dark version more ferocious.

Darunia (Ocarina of Time)

A Goron would be fun to play as in Hyrule Warriors, and who better than the Ocarina of Time Saga Darunia. His main attack would be rolling around causing havoc, though he could probably also use bombs and other explosive weaponry. I’d love to see this kind of callback to a specific Goron make it into Hyrule Warriors, but I sort of doubt it will happen. The more likely scenario is having some form of Link where he can change into Deku, Zora, and Goron Link on the fly. It’d be like Pokémon Trainer from Smash Bros. but with more musical instruments.

So Toadette is a bad character but Nabbit isn't?!

Toadette has the worst drive in the game and is bland.
Nabbit actually has good stats and is a little more fun personality-wise.

TalkBack / Mario Golf: World Tour Flower DLC Pack
« on: May 26, 2014, 04:28:37 AM »

The second batch of Mario Golf DLC is even better than the first.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37518/mario-golf-world-tour-flower-dlc-pack

The second DLC pack for Mario Golf: World Tour raises the stakes. While the Mushroom Pack added two regular, easy courses, the pair of new 18-hole courses in the Flower Pack are more challenging. Layer-Cake Desert, based on Shy Guy Desert from the Nintendo 64 version, is a dessert-themed area with more sand traps than you can shake a stick at. Sparkling Waters, based on Yoshi's Island from the Nintendo 64 version, is a difficult water-logged course with plenty of hazards. The holes are tricky in both, with some rivaling the hardest holes from the regular game. Simply put, if you're looking for a harder round of golf, get this pair of courses right away.

The new Star and Moon Coin Challenges are even more dastardly than they were in the first pack of DLC. They require you to bend these courses to the limits and be extremely precise with your shots. While I'm reaching the point where the high difficulty is getting beyond my skill level, I'm amazed at how devious some of these challenges are. You have to hit the ball out of bounds in the exact perfect spot. Players are challenged to use items in ways they likely never thought possible.

Aside from the two courses, the other piece of this DLC pack is the new playable character, Nabbit. I quite like playing as Nabbit, with his mean draw, goofy animations and clever victory celebrations.

I'm way more impressed with the inventiveness on display in Mario Golf: World Tour's Flower DLC Pack than I was with the first one. The new courses are more interesting and difficult, and the new character is actually worth playing. It seems geared more towards expert golfers, but that doesn't detract from the fun.

Curious that *no* one has ranked the arcade games.  Has no one played them, or does everyone who's played them just not consider them to be part of the series?

I've played them, but not nearly enough to give a final assessment on them. Tough to do that for arcade games you play maybe 8 times over the course of 3 years.

The Capcom-developed Game Boy Advance Zelda game is coming soon to a GamePad near you.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37507/the-legend-of-zelda-the-minish-cap-heading-to-wii-u-eshop

The Game Boy Advance game The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is heading to the Wii U Virtual Console on May 29 in Europe. It has been announced for an unspecified date in North America, as well, with simultaneous release in the two territories likely but unconfirmed.

Originally released in 2004 in Europe and Japan and 2005 in North America, Minish Cap features the villain Vaati and tells the origin of the Four Sword. The main gameplay hook centers around the titular hat, which talks to Link and also shrinks him to miniature size.

The Minish Cap is directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who most recently directed The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. For more info on Fujibayashi, read our feature on his history.

The delayed version of Watch Dogs is the only upcoming Ubisoft game on a Nintendo platform we know about.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37499/no-wii-u-or-3ds-games-from-ubisoft-at-e3-2014

Ubisoft's E3 2014 lineup won't feature any Nintendo games, according to the publisher.

"We won't be showing off any Nintendo games at E3 this year," a Ubisoft representative said. Currently, the company is slated to show off Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, and more announced and unannouced games at E3 2014.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke last year about how the company was planning to still support the Wii U during the 2013 holiday season and would review their commitment to Nintendo's console after that.

Currently, the only upcoming game from Ubisoft for a Nintendo platform is the delayed release of Watch Dogs, which is expected, at best, this fall, months after the May 27 of Watch Dogs on other systems.

At E3 2011, Ubisoft teamed up with Nintendo for a special developer discussion focusing on Ubisoft's upcoming slate of Wii U titles, including Killer Freaks from Outer Space (which later became ZombiU) and the never-released Ghost Recon Online. The following E3, Ubisoft's press conference was one of the first public demonstrations of the near-final Wii U with demos of Rayman Legends, ZombiU, and Just Dance.

If we're doing this....

1. Double Dash
2. Wii
3. 7
4. 8
5. 64
6. DS
7. SMK
8. Super Circuit

For me, DD and Wii are far away the best. 7 and 8 are virtually indistinguishable for me (aside from home console vs. portable). 64 is probably only as high because I still love that Battle Mode and nostalgia. I never got into DS that much. SNES is dated. Super Circuit sucks.

Anyway, I'm way more interested in this game after hearing more about it. I'm not sold on it, but this is a big step past my shoulder shrugging when it was first announced. I haven't played too many Warriors games, but I'd always find them fun for a little bit. If they actually make it feel "Zelda-like" then I imagine it might hook me more.

TalkBack / Hyrule Warriors Features Multiple Playable Characters
« on: May 21, 2014, 06:37:45 PM »

As Famitsu confirms a Japanese release date, more story and gameplay details about the next Zelda game are revealed.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37489/hyrule-warriors-features-multiple-playable-characters

Hyrule Warriors, the Dynasty Warriors-style Zelda spinoff due out on August 14 in Japan, will feature multiple playable characters, including Link and Impa, in an original story focused on rescuing Zelda from the villainous witch Shia.

In Hyrule Warriors, Link is a soldier-in-training who is called into action when Shia kidnaps Zelda. He is paired up with the army captain Impa, who is just one of numerous playable characters. Others were shown off in screenshots, including a villain who might be related to the Ocarina of Time boss Volvagia.

For the most part, Hyrule Warriors appears to stay true to the Dynasty Warriors formula, with numerous upgradeable weapons and abilities that change each character. Z-targeting, a 3D Zelda staple, will work its way into the gameplay, however, and can be used to focus on specific enemies and weak points. Link's trademark spin attack will also factor into the combat. The Wii U GamePad will be used as an inventory menu in single-player, but in two-player co-op, one player can use the TV and the other can use the GamePad screen to play.

Hyrule Warriors is being developed by Omega Force, the studio responsible for most of the Warriors games, and Team Ninja, who last worked with Nintendo on Metroid: Other M. Eiji Aonuma, the Zelda series producer, is overseeing the project.

According to the developers, Hyrule Warriors is 70% complete and will be playable at E3 2014. The game is set for a summer release in North America and Europe, which means it should come before the end of September.

Neal, you obviously have a right to any opinion but they are rushing to your aid. It is a herd mentality. But anyways, what are the cracks that show up after an hour of gameplay? Did you rate MK 7 just as low as this one? Did the same cracks show after an hour of gameplay in that one?

I literally wrote a review about how I feel about MK8.

Funny thing is, when I was about an hour into playing Mario Kart 8 for review, I was singing it's praises much like deepsouth is right now. It was when I played it more that the cracks began to show and I wound up a little more lukewarm.

Also, most people I'm seeing aren't necessarily agreeing with my review in a herd mentality. They're just defending my right to have a unique opinion. If people turn out to love MK8 here, that's awesome. I won't banish anybody. That's not how we do things here.

NWR Neal, well thats really suprising. How can you like the Mario Kart series but not this one?

Going back to that whole "reading what was written" thing... Neal *never* said he didn't like the game.

This is true. I think I said, in my fair & accurate review, something almost exactly contradictory to what you're assuming. Here it is: "I like playing Mario Kart 8. I think it’s a satisfactory entry in the series, but nothing more."

However someone who has grown tired of a series can't really give a fair and accurate review of a game from that series.

I'm basically tired of the series because of Mario Kart 8, though. I've really enjoyed nearly every other Mario Kart game. This was the one that made me truly grow tired of it. So, I think I gave it a fair and accurate review. Sorry if you disagree.

TalkBack / Re: Second Opinion: Mario Kart 8 Review
« on: May 17, 2014, 09:29:19 PM »
I don't have an issue with the criticisms raised in both reviews, they seem fair to me. My only thing is, I feel that both of them have similar talking points. It would have been more interesting if the views of the second review were from a more differing perspective that could have brought some different talking points.

Fair point.

If you've noticed, we've had a lot of dual reviews for Nintendo games lately. That's mostly because we're getting both NA and European codes for coverage. If Daan and I knew ahead of time our opinions were going to be so similar, we might have tried to switch up who was reviewing it. However, when we realized we had this weird groupthink about it, it was like two days before embargo. I've said it before and I'll say it again: we both came up with our scores/reviews independently. We briefly talked about the game when I started it and that was kind of it until our reviews were written.

We're continually evaluating how we handle our coverage, and this Second Opinion phrasing is our latest attempt. It may or may not stick. We'll see how reviews go over the next few months.
