Podcast Discussion / Re: Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 135

Hah, the bloopers at the end were pretty entertaining. How long did recording take in total?

1252
Hurray for the same old arguments!

I think another damning thing this article points out is that there is no way we can ever see Wii Speak patched into older games.

At what point would it become worthwhile for you to make the change? If your co-worker was offended by it? What about your good friend? Your best friend? Your girlfriend?

1254
I'm just totally skeptical of this supposed solution... god I hope I'm wrong though.

I've been tempted to get into homebrew so I could try programming my own solution based on option 3 that the author of this article talked about.

I have a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't be possible in the homebrew scene though, based on the fact that it hasn't been done yet.

This has nothing to do with anti-piracy.  They could have easily treated the SD card as a true memory expansion and still implemented the same anti piracy measures.  Instead of decrypting on the copy, decrypt at play time.

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no excuse for any of Nintendo's storage blunders this gen.  Even ignoring SD all together, putting in 2-4 gigs of internal flash memory would have barely made a dent in the manufacturing price.  It all just shows little to no concern for DLC or the Virtual Console in general. It's like they decided on the 512 number based solely on the size of game saves, which 512 megs can store a metric ton of.

Every time I read an article like this it hammers home my only true beef with the Wii... that the lack of SD support, and in the larger sense, Virtual Console and WiiWare implementation sucks so badly.

To this day, downloadable games are my favorite part of the Wii.  Sure, I'm enjoying their main releases, but my gaming tastes have changed as my free time has shrunk and nostalgic and/or short gaming bursts are what make me the happiest at this point.

I think this really begs the question, were these design choices made intentionally, or is this evidence of a lack of experience at the system level by Nintendo's internal developers?

Modified thread title to talk about firmware.

Can we have a normal discussion without worthless spamming please?  Pro's point could have been made in a single post. I'm not sure Infernal had a point.

Solution: just assume everyone is Asian and avoid saying anything offensive
Better solution. Don't try and make black and white rules for a gray world. Balance sacrifice with benefits and then make the best decision for every instance.

I wasn't speaking specifically to you GP.

My best experience with this issue is when I play Final Fantasy XI. For those that don't know, it has a healthy mix of both Japanese people and Americans (as well as other regions obviously).  There is an auto-translate feature in the game so that you can communicate (at least about game elements) with people that don't speak your language.

When in a party, there is often a lot of slang used, and this can cause some frustration for people when they don't realize another member doesn't speak english.

I have witnessed the following events (more or less) on multiple occasions.   (Curly braces represent auto-translated terms)

English Speaker A: Heal me... HEAL ME... I'M POISONED! COME ON YOU ARE THE WHITE MAGE!

Japanese Speaker: (Doesn't heal them.)

English Speaker B: He's Jap man, talk like this...

English Speaker B: {{White Mage}} -> {{Thief}} {{Please Help!}}

Japanese Speaker Leaves the Party and quits.

Party is confused as to why their White Mage just bailed on the party.  As you can see from that conversation, the second english speaker was genuinely trying to help the situation and meant no offense.

But, if you read that conversation knowing that "Jap" can be seen as a racial slur, the entire thing can be viewed as saying the Japanese White mage sucks solely because he is Japanese.

This is why you have to be careful when it is typed text. With absolutely no inflection, true meaning is difficult to arrive at.

I nominate Bomberman Blast.

Just so everyone knows, there are only two evenings I'm available next week so I may not be able to participate. :(

It's time for another official NWR WiFi night. It's happening next week and let's start things out as usual with a poll for which day we play.

We are implementing the "Can't do the same thing twice" rule this month for both day and game, so you will notice that Friday is not an option in this poll.

Voting will end at some point Thursday morning.

This is also the game nomination thread, so throw your desired games up in here.

Sorry this is happening the second week of March and not the first.

Well I guess I may be misunderstanding some people's stance then, but I was getting the impression that people were basically saying "It's dumb for them to be offended so why should I change the way I type it."

I've been playing a ton of the original on PSP over the last few days and while I was enjoying it, it's getting kind of old now...

I have to say, the random beasts that show up on the paths are pretty damn annoying.

The rules are short enough that there isn't that much to read... but I'll give a brief summary.

We called out specifically what we consider trolling and derailing and made both against the rules.

All "you broke the rules" comments from other users are now against the rules. We expect everyone to start using the report to moderator link.

Besides that, there is a new and standardized moderation guide that utilizes the warning system built into the forum software. I urge everyone to read that section so they understand when penalties will kick in and what not.

I think everyone is making good points as to how people can understand the context and learn to be less offended by it.

My beef, as James C. mentions in his blog post, is that it isn't that hard to change your habits when it comes to typing it. I'm pretty appalled that some just can't be bothered to do something so insanely simple.

Let me pose a question to all of you arguing against the validity of this blog post...

Let me take your side for a second and assume that very few people are actually offended when someone abbreviates Japanese as "Jap".  Let's throw a number on there.  Say that 1 out of every 100 Japanese people are offended and become depressed when they are called that.

Is it really too much of a sacrifice to make to start typing Jp instead of Jap just to make that single person's day a little better?

NWR Forums Discord / Re: List of words changed by the Word Filter?
« on: March 01, 2009, 08:18:54 PM »
Because users have the ability to turn the filter on and off, you are free to speak how you see fit.

That said, racial slurs and anything that can be considered insulting another individual is off limits.

Also, if a word is said by someone else that makes you uncomfortable, and it is not filtered out when you have the filter turned on, send me a PM and I can add it.

Heh no, we are nice to animals. =P

We did touch it, and we were tempted to try and pick it up, but we chickened out.
