Unofficial Wii DVD Playback Now Available, Requires Modded Wii

Team Symbiote's hack looks simple, although it requires you to start up from a CD and then change to the DVD pressing the z button. However, this shows that Nintendo can do this themselves with current hardware.

General Chat / Superbad
« on: August 18, 2007, 09:03:08 PM »
So I saw Superbad the other night, overall it was good and I certainly found myself laughing out loud at some moments in the film but it wasn't as good as Rolling Stone Magazine made it out to be.

It certainly didn't live up to the hype but that didn't prevent me from enjoying the film. If you like movies like the 40 year old virgin and Knocked Up you'll enjoy Superbad. Though, to be honest, I enjoyed the overall pacing and story of the other two films over Superbad.

There is one element of Superbad that was lacking and it really was the story. The ending in particular was severely lacking.

Ok this is a shameless plug (and also some advertising for the Radio Free Nintendo show).

Listen to episode 65, at about 14 minutes or so in they answer a very hard hitting question for Smash Bros. Brawl.

Listen to the whole show though if you can cause it's a good one.

(Listen every episode after because NWR does good Radio shows).

And now it's time for another edition of Sega is Stupid.

Brought to you by Budwiser. Budwiser . . . the king of beers.

Business Week recently examined the new Sega, the Sega that doesn't need to rely on Sonic the Hedgehog, nor any of his s***** friends. Sure, Sonic will be properly whored out for Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games, but even Sega of America president Simon Jeffrey admits the blue rodent "loses its cool factor when you get about 12 years old."

Gee Sega, I know a certain plumber that has been popular and "cool" for quite some time since he was first introduced to the video game world. Maybe you should stop making crappy a$$ Sonic games and he will be considered cool again. How's about that?

Nintendo Gaming / Shiggy speaks about Casual and Hardcore games

Kotaki: Kiss Your Old, Hard Nintendo Games Goodbye

Quote

While there are indeed games designed for core and casual markets, core users are also enjoying casual gaming. It is very hard to tune the difficulty just for the core market. Even for us, we would still have difficulty finding the right balance. But I think the future is games that are not difficult and yet very fun to play

Now . . . Kotaku forum goers and even the news reporter are taking this statement a bit far.

If anything this is just Shiggy stating that Nintendo has a hard time finding the balance between too easy and too hard while making the game fun.

I don't think this is the end of the hardcore Nintendo video game world as others are claiming it to be but we will see.

Nintendo Gaming / Shin Chuuka Taisen: Michael to Meimei no Bouken

I did searches for a forum about this game already existing and I couldn't find one so here we go:

Shin Chuuka Taisen: Michael to Meimei no Bouken

Yay for 2D.

37
Well this is just the biggest pile of sh!t I've seen.

So long to another fine fighting franchise.

Glad this garbage is coming out on a 360 so the Wii isn't the reason for the series changing to crap.

Well look no further: Sass Up Your DS Hello Kitty Style.

This may also confirm the rumors that hello kitty island adventure is indeed coming to the Nintendo DS ZOMG! This is a joke of course.

According to The-Magicbox.com

Nintendo will release Dairantou Smash Bros. X [Super Smash Bros. Brawl] for Wii in Japan on November 22, 2007, unconfirmed report said the game will support battles over WiFi connection and possible online battles.

Kinda weird wording at the end but more rumors of online being in the game are floating about it seems.

Lucky Japanese getting it earlier than us ::tears::.

General Gaming / Beautiful Katamari Opening Movie
« on: August 10, 2007, 07:04:03 PM »
Well it's only said to be for the Xbox 360 so far but here is the opening sequence.

My thoughts?

Meh. Didn't care for the song. The first intro is still the best.

Oh and WTF!? Why did they ruin the king of the cosmos by putting pants on him?

Boo.

There has been a lot of speculation going on lately as to if the class "bubble" guard system would make a return.

Well IGN has a few (See: 3) exclusive screen shots from the game. The only one of real interest is this:

Link fighting Pit.

It would seem like Link is blocking the attack in a more traditional fighting fashion.

Now this could also be Link charging for his forward + A smash move but the white "movement" graphic on his foot may suggest other wise. (When characters in Melee used the dodge function they created a similar effect, IIRC).

General Chat / Anime =/= Design and Art?
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:04:20 AM »
As to not derail the Smash Bros thread, I have started this new one in response to Strell.

The conversation thus far:

Strell said:

Quote

You don't get to complain about art and design if you've got something anime inspired as your avatar.

I said:

Quote

Wow really?

Yeah anime has nothing to do with art and design and is terrible. /sarcasim

Strell said:

Quote

Well I certainly have a shortage of plucky young adolescent boys with wild long hair wielding swords where they save the world alongside their childhood female friend.

I really wish every company in the world would suddenly use that template as their RPG main character, because it's such an untapped resource.

Hey - maybe they could make the girl look like she's 12. That would be awesome.

I said:

Quote

So because something is overly used you can make blanket statements such that anime or Japanese inspired animation =/= any sort of art and design?

Yeah good point man, well thought out!

Strell said:

Quote

I'm sorry, is there a reason I can't?

Tired boring design in every RPG means I can't call it devoid of design?

You're right. When every RPG in the world features Cloud but with a different shade of hair, that's design at its best.

Let's go back to debating what sex appeal is, and about how if someone is in a skin tight uniform, that instantly means they can't be seen as anything more than sex object, because that's just the way things are.

I said:

Quote

Oh really? Hang tight for a second while I prove how grossly over exaggerated your statements are (and once again how you blanket ALL OF ANIME into RPGS). Ignorance is bliss.

Edit: Oh I'll make a separate thread for this as to not derail this one. Continue one with sexy discussion

Sooo here we are.

To begin with:

Quote

You're right. When every RPG in the world features Cloud but with a different shade of hair, that's design at its best.

So how many are cloud with hair color differences?

Kotaku: Stroke Victims Find New Lease On Limbs With Wii Sports

Quote

A Minneapolis hospital has become the latest unwitting Nintendo viral marketer with its new rehabilitation plan. The Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Minneapolis' Abbott Northwestern Hospital aims to aid patients who have suffered from strokes by giving them access to the popular Wii pack-in, Wii Sports, and a Wii-mote, putting the fun back in motor function recovery.

It's nice to see that Wii helping stroke victims out.

Wii Update Breaking Freeloaders

This is annoying. I WAS going to order a new freeloader to work on Wii but it seems 3.0 stopped making all version of freloader from working.

It's so god damn annoying that I need to have my gamecube laying around JUST to play Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4. /sigh

Glad I didn't sell my cube after all.

So I recently order the 2X Wii Remote Charging Dock + 4X Rechargeable Battery Combo from Penguin United. This full package was going for the supremely cheap price of Price: 26.99 (about 30 dollars cheaper than the original list price) so I couldn't help but order it.

So how good is the product?

I'll break it down using the hardware review style of NWR:

Appearance - 9.5

The two chargers that come in the package I ordered are stylish and match the Wii nicely. They are two pieces you won't mind setting up next to your Wii. They are small as well (but sturdy) and while charing they have a nice blue light that indicates if the Wiimote is charging. Two Wiimotes standing upright charging (one on each side of the Wii) actually make the whole system set up look rather cool.

The only "downside" to the charging stations appearance is when the Wiimotes are done charging. The blue light blinks. Which isn't really bad or anything but I would have preferred if the lights had just gone off so I could leave the remotes cradled in the stations without having to see two blue lights flashing all the time.

The package also comes with new Wiimote battery covers so the rechargeable batteries can, well, charge. They are very close to the Wiimotes original color (only slightly off, barely noticeable. They fit nicely on the remote and are pretty much just like the original covers. You can barely tell that there is something 3rd party on the Wiimote, which is a good thing.

Overall the whole set looks very official and is professionally done.

Comfort - 10.0

The new Wiimote battery covers don't change how holding the Wiimote feels. Holding the Wiimote doesn't feel different at all and the rechargeable batteries are only slightly heavier than two normal AA batteries.

No complaints in the comfort area.

Quality - 10.0

The test of time will truly tell how well the product stands up but from what I can tell so far, the quality is spot on.

The charging stations are small yet elegant and are sturdy. The hold the Wiimotes firmly but at the same you don't have to struggle to pull the Wiimotes out of the station.

The batteries took only about 10 hours to charge up for the first run and it seems to be holding a charge nicely.

The quality is very high from what I have experienced so far.

Value - 10.0

For the slashed price, $26.99 is practically a steal for this set of items. Fantastic value and a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

Construction - 10

Pretty much I said what I had to say in the Quality area in this regard but yeah everything is of a really good quality. The battery covers are high quality. The charging stations are high quality. It's a high quality product.

Final - 9.5

No product is perfect but this set is as good as it gets in the rechargeable battery department. Definitely worthy of the Nintendo Seal of Quality as far as I am concerned. While time will tell how the batteries stand up to the test of time, everything seems to be going great so far and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. If you're like me and find your standard batteries are running out quickly and want an elegant charging solution for your controllers, this product is for you.

Nintendo Gaming / My First Wii Remote Injurt (ow)
« on: August 03, 2007, 08:19:11 PM »
Well . . . I don't really like Mario Strikers lol.

Because of the games refusal to let me select Bowser while on the field while hitting the A button for the umpteenth time, I got angry.

A little too angry.

and well . . .

I forgot the Wiimote strap was on my wrist. In my anger I yelled at my friend that this was BS and I threw the remote down.

Except it flew right back up and hit me square in the eye.

Yep.

I'm freaking retarded.

The moral of the story is, don't get angry while playing video games.

General Gaming / World of Warcraft: Warth of the Lich King
« on: August 03, 2007, 06:26:32 AM »
So it's been confirmed that the new expansion is indeed "Wrath of the Lich King". And the new class "Death Knight" is also confirmed as well as a level raise of 10 (making it 80).

I haven't played WoW in about 2 months now, but the expansion has somewhat peeked my interest at the game once again.

All I need to hear is Pandaren as a new race and my subscription will be activated once again haha.
