TalkBack / Marvel Pinball 3D Impressions
« on: June 11, 2012, 10:29:14 AM »

More of the same, but there is nothing wrong with that.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30684

For those who have not heard me discuss my love for Zen Pinball 3D, I should let you know how much I love it. I’m not a fan of many pinball games, but something about Zen Pinball certainly pushed me into a fanboy-type craze. Playing Marvel Pinball mixed my love for Marvel characters and addiction to Zen Pinball into something amazing. Both games feel the same, but I do not feel there is anything wrong with that.

There were four different stages to pick from, each featuring one character from the Marvel universe. I selected the Captain America stage, partially due to my love for the recent Avengers film. After selecting my favorite view, I dove right into the Pinball greatness.

Ultimately, the game felt the same as Zen Pinball 3D. Everything, down to the qualities of the physics, mimicked what had already been done. For me, this was not an issue, but for those looking for something different, it may well be. The Captain America table was not much different from my most played Zen table, Excalibur. There were plenty of ramps, extra flippers, bumpers, and everything else Pinball tables usually offer.

I did notice the achievement system was back in the game. I managed to snag a quick achievement before my game ended, which is always satisfying. I didn’t glance at how challenging some of these achievements were, but assuming they follow Zen Pinball, some are probably going to be quite difficult.

Now that you know how much I love this game, you may be asking yourself why you should get this game if you already own Zen Pinball 3D. The only real answer I can give you is the game's new tables. If you love Pinball, and love the Marvel universe, these tables will feel right at home for you. It may not be that different from what you have already experienced, but you are bound to get a ton of fun out of it.

TalkBack / Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two Impressions
« on: June 10, 2012, 06:27:19 PM »

My first experience with the Epic Mickey franchise was a generally pleasant one.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30681

I never got around to purchasing the original Epic Mickey, despite my interest in the game's unique mechanic. So when I sat down with Epic Mickey 2 for the first time, I was throughly impressed. Both the controls and graphics worked well, and my experience with the game was pretty great.

I started out playing the tutorial level, in which I had to journey to Yen Sid’s world to get the magic paintbrush. From there I ventured around, learning how I could paint or thin the environment. There were many situations where I could either paint or thin and accomplish the same goal. Being new to this mechanic I found it fascinating, but for those revisiting the series, it's probably more of the same.

Eventually Oswald, the co-op character, was introduced. Oswald had a different ability set that, when combined with Mickey's, allowed the duo to complete goals. There was a particular 2D platforming level where Oswald threw Mickey up to a seesaw-like board so MIckey could then assist Oswald in progressing upward. I find that these types of cooperative puzzles are really fun to complete, especially when playing with someone you know.

After completing this level, we approached a boss battle. This section of the game was the one I didn’t find as enjoyable. I once again had the choice to either paint or thin the boss, however maneuvering around it was difficult. Some camera issues made it hard to land perfect jumps and direct paint in the right direction. As Mickey it was something I could get over, but with Oswald it appeared to be more of a problem.

I will defend that Epic Mickey 2 could be a great game, despite its minor issues. My ability to grasp its concept, as well as complete the demo, shows that everyone should be able pick up and play the game. Epic Mickey 2 is filled with choices, and left me with no choice but to be interested in this game when it launches later this year.

TalkBack / Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance Impressions
« on: June 07, 2012, 05:57:53 PM »

Kingdom Hearts is very welcome back to Nintendo systems.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30643

I've been a huge fan of the Kingdom Hearts series ever since I got my hands on the original title back in 2002. My anticipation for Kingdom Hearts 3D has been building, ever since the games announcement at E3 2010. Now that I finally had the opportunity to play it, I can gladly say, the game does not disappoint.

I selected to play as Sora, the series main protagonist, and was thrown into the world of the Three Musketeers. A tutorial explained how to use the companion Dream Eaters. My party had two Dream Eaters, one had the ability to stomp around the map, the other attacked using a basic timing element. I imagine with more Dream Eaters, the abilities will vary and you can craft the exact type of experience you want. I personally think these combo attacks are a great addition to Kingdom Hearts, due to breaking up the hack-and-slash style gameplay.

The other thing about the gameplay, is it is no longer entirely hack-and-slash. Sure, there is plenty of running and mashing the attack button. However, with a new addition called Flowmotion you can move more freely in the air. You can bounce off walls, and increase your attack power. I had a ton of fun bouncing around a room, only to then crash down onto an enemy and annihilate it.

The demo had some boss fights, one in which I protected a carriage from a dinosaur looking Dream Eater. The fight made a point of showing off Sora's ability to counter attacks and in turn deal damage to the enemy. Another boss style fight included many strong enemies scattered around a room. I had to make use of Flowmotion to strengthen my attack and then land powerful attacks.

The last part of the game I experienced was another new battle element, reality shifts. I was able to try out Wonder Comic. The enemy entered a comic book style artwork on which I had to trace lines to attack the enemy. There is a different reality shift for each world in the game, and hopefully they are not too similar. I think its a nice addition that once again improves upon the old battle system.

Kingdom Hearts 3D has proven to me that the Kingdom Hearts series is not dead. It has been 6 years since the last numbered KH game. Kingdom Hearts 3D is the first non numbered entry in the series that I would consider good enough to be a main series entry. I loved all the other portable KH games, but Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is something that has really grabbed my attention.

TalkBack / New Super Mario Bros. U Impressions
« on: June 06, 2012, 04:11:06 AM »

It's New Super Mario Bros, but with some added features.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30567

The New Super Mario Bros. franchise evolved when it made the leap from the Nintendo DS to the Nintendo Wii. New Super Mario Bros. U once again takes the franchise and changes some aspects, but retains the basic formula. Cooperative play used the Wii U GamePad in an intelligent way while playing single player was equally enjoyable.

I started out by demoing the game using the GamePad controller. The video streamed seamlessly on both the GamePad and the TV screen, so I could easily switch between both video feeds. The controller felt nice in my hand, but I was forced to use the D-pad; there was no option to use the analog stick. I feel that placing my thumb on the analog stick is more natural, so stretching down to the D-pad feels a little out of place. It's nothing huge, but the game would be more comfortable to play using the Wii Remote.

The gameplay itself wasn't terribly challenging. The first level featured a flying squirrel suit that allowed me to float around the stage. This made traversing the course much easier, and in a level as simple as the one being shown, there was no real difficulty. I believe it is best compared to the Tanooki suit from Super Mario 3D Land, in the sense that it makes platforming challenges much easier.

In the second level, a baby Yoshi was introduced. This Yoshi could inflate itself up like a balloon and carry your character over gaps, and into the air to reach coins. It was fun to once again use a baby Yoshi, and this short sampling has left me looking forward to the other colors/abilities. I did ask whether baby Yoshi could turn into adult Yoshi after eating so many enemies, and was told that Nintendo hasn't said anything about it “yet”.

The last level featured some different platforming challenges, including a great number of spinning stars. There certainly wasn't anything wrong with the level, but nothing stood out to me as brand new. I love Mario platformers, and this was no different. The platforming was fun to work through, the music matched the levels, and the game had enough new features to engage me.

I was also given the opportunity to try out a new mode made available through the use of the Wii U Gamepad, Boost mode. In Boost mode, I was able to create blocks on the field to assist the player. I helped Mario reach the coins that were just out of reach, and other points of difficult access. It's a really simple gameplay element, but one that is novel and a decent amount of fun. I feel that placing blocks could get old after awhile, but not knowing what else awaits later in the game, it is hard to determine how in-depth this type of gameplay could get.

New Super Mario Bros. U appears like it will have plenty of content, and what I was able to play was enjoyable. 2D-Sidescrolling Mario, is almost always a pleasant experience, and this entry in the series is no different. I am looking forward to seeing what else this game has to offer. It is currently scheduled to release this holiday season, so hopefully there will be plenty more to check out about New Super Mario Bros. U.

TalkBack / Wii U Expected Price Revealed by Nikkei
« on: June 04, 2012, 02:21:06 PM »

How much could you expect to pay for Wii U?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30432

The Wii U's expected price was revealed to be 30,000 yen (roughly $383) by trusted Japanese newspaper Nikkei.

Nintendo has said that they had no plans of revealing the price of the console at E3, so this expected price may not be completely accurate.

The report also revealed information regarding distribution of content on the Wii U, such as a car navigator, books, and a karaoke service that will supposedly have 10,000 songs.

Currently, the 3DS roughly costs 15,000 yen (roughly $191), which is relatively close to the North American price of the 3DS, which is $170. Assuming the 30,000 yen ($383) expected price is accurate, the system could likely cost over $300 in North America.

Nikkei has previously accurately reported on both the 3DS and the Wii U before their official reveals. It's likely that they are close to accurate on this.

TalkBack / Amazon Reveals Possible Wii U Launch Lineup
« on: May 16, 2012, 05:40:18 PM »

Could these be the games launching alongside the Wii U later this year?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/30173

Amazon's listing for Nintendo's upcoming console, the Wii U, lists a ton of previously known specs as well as a list of launch games for the system.

The full list includes:

  • New Super Mario Bros. Mii
  • Darksiders II
  • DiRT
  • Aliens Colonial Marines
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online
  • Metro Last Light
  • Tekken
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (working title)
  • And Nintendo Mii-based software yet to be confirmed

Amazon's listing did note that these games were "just a few of those players can expect."

Whether this list of games is correct is yet to be known, but as E3 approaches we are bound to find out what games will be making the cut for Wii U's launch.

Edit: Metro: Last Light was previously delayed until 2013. This information makes the rumored list appear to be more false than true.

TalkBack / The Avengers Video Game Coming to Wii U
« on: May 10, 2012, 11:07:04 AM »

The Avengers just hit the big screen, and now a game is on its way.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30102

Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth, a motion-controlled action game, is coming to Wii U this year, according to The Washington Post.

Ubisoft recently filed a trademark for Avengers: Battle for Earth, but at the time no game announcement was made. A few days later, we have learned that the game is coming to Nintendo's upcoming console, the Wii U, and also Kinect.

While Battle for Earth will focus on Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and The Hulk, more than 20 characters from the Marvel universe will be present in the title, which is actually based on the Secret Invasion comic series and not the movie. In the game, The Avengers will be fighting off the genetically altered Skrull aliens.

Ubisoft’s vice president of sales Tony Key said "The idea that we’re making a motion-control version of ‘The Avengers’ is a unique proposition if you compare that to superhero games of the past. This is the perfect type of game for that because these characters are very action oriented. They’re always fighting and throwing things."

More information is set to be revealed on the game at this years E3 which is only a few weeks away. Look forward to more coverage of the game during E3 2012.

TalkBack / Wii U Version of Runner 2 Hinted at Again
« on: May 09, 2012, 08:08:41 PM »

How many hints will they drop before they announce the game?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30091

Another hint for Runner 2, formally known as Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, was given on the game's development blog.

After introducing Timbletot, a robot-like creature, Gaijin Games made the following remark: "Wii have a few fun little updates coming for U, so keep your EYES out!!!"

The word choice certainly suggests Runner 2 will be making its way to Nintendo's next console. Now we only have to wait for the inevitable official announcement, most likely coming at this year's E3.

Join Finn and Jake on adventure to find stolen trash.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30076

Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd you steal our garbage?! was officially announced for both the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS through a press release today.

An Adventure Time game was teased over Twitter by the shows creator this past March. At the time we knew the game was coming to the DS, but not whether it was heading to the 3DS. Now the game is officially heading to both systems later this year during the fall.

In the game you play as Finn and Jake in an adventure across the Land of Ooo while trying to teach the Ice King a lesson. The Ice King has stolen their trash and is constructing a Garbage Princess.

The Adventure Time video game is being developed by WayForward and will be published by D3Publisher. It is expected to be at E3 2012 in June.

TalkBack / New Resident Evil Game Heading to 3DS This Year?
« on: May 08, 2012, 01:43:55 PM »

Could we be seeing a new RE game on 3DS this year?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/30073

A new Resident Evil game, tentatively titled Resident Evil: Degeneration-Damnation-Downfall 3D, might be coming to 3DS later this year. This news supposedly came from an article on Digital Spy, which has since been removed.

Two of the subtitles for the game are references to movies that would be available on the game cartridge. The last, Downfall, would be a new game in the Resident Evil series.

Downfall would take place between Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, and would reportedly feature Claire Redfield as she witnessed the downfall of humanity.

Two Resident Evil games were already released on the 3DS within a year of each other. So seeing another on the system is by no means a stretch. With E3 less than a month away, we will surely know soon whether this rumor has any validity.

Get ready to balance objects soon after Europe.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30065

Art of Balance TOUCH! is scheduled to release on the North American eShop in early June, according to the game's developer, Shin'en.

We recently learned that Art of Balance TOUCH! was heading to Europe on May 24. After reaching out to the developer, we got the following response: "Art of Balance TOUCH will come to America shortly after the EU release in early June."

Art of Balance TOUCH! is the sequel to the WiiWare game Art of Balance, in which you complete physics-based balancing puzzles.

Call of Duty may skip Nintendo handhelds this time around.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30034

n-Space is not currently working on a Call of Duty game for Nintendo handhelds, according to n-Space founder Dan O'Leary via Twitter.

In response to a question asking whether n-Space was working on a handheld counter part to Call of Duty: Black Ops II, O'Leary said "we have no first person shooters in development at this time."

This doesn't rule out the possibility that a different company is working on a handheld version of the game, but n-Space certainly doesn't seem to be working on it.

TalkBack / Treyarch Hints at Call of Duty: Black Ops II Wii U
« on: May 02, 2012, 07:09:44 PM »

Wii U may be getting some Call of Duty love.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30033

Treyarch studio head, Mark Lamia, hinted at the possibility of a Wii U version of Black Ops II in an interview with PressFire.

When asked about a Wii U version of Black Ops II, Lamia said "Ah! We’re not... we’re only talking about the other platforms at this time. But here’s what I can tell you: Treyarch has a long tradition of working on the Nintendo platforms. A long tradition."

Lamia went on to explain that Treyarch has developed many different Wii Call of Duty games, including the Wii ports of the Modern Warfare series. He said "So yeah, we enjoy the Nintendo Wii. We enjoy working on that."

A Wii version of Black Ops II is already strongly rumored, and a Wii U version of the game could be possible. As we approach E3 2012 we will most likely learn more about the possible existence of a Wii U version of the game.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops II forum page includes a Wii forum, suggesting the existence of a Wii version of the recently announced first person shooter.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II was officially announced yesterday, but a Nintendo version of the game was not discussed. However, on the game's official website, there is a forum dedicated to a Wii version of Black Ops 2.

This forum certainly suggests that a Wii version of the game is on the way, but does not officially confirm it. When more information is revealed about Call of Duty: Black Ops II at E3 2012, we are bound to learn more about what platforms it will land on.

We've reached out to Activision for an official comment.

UPDATE: Iwata dismisses possibility of "gatcha-type" sales of mystery items.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29988

Nintendo is not and will not be in the business of selling mystery "gatcha-type" items as DLC according to CEO Satoru Iwata. As an example, Iwata said that Nintendo would "continue to make efforts to avoid such misunderstandings as, 'the next 'Animal Crossing' might be a game which relies upon add-on content sales.'"

Iwata's comments were made at recent Nintendo's end-of-the-fiscal-year investor meeting in Japan. The CEO was talking about the videogame company's plans to take advantage of DLC and downloadable titles in their 3DS and future Wii U hardware.

Iwata's "gatcha-type" description describes a "capsule toy vending machine business" that is popular in Japan where users purchase small toys via vending machines. Specifically, he was stating that Nintendo was not going to pursue downloadable content sales "which asks consumers to pay money without knowing what kind of item shall emerge as a result of their payment, even if such a business model might temporarily yield high profitability."

A previous Animal Crossing title, Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii, had DLC content as an online feature, but did not involve real money transaction sales in making that DLC available. The 3DS Animal Crossing that Iwata refers to is due out in the fall in Japan, and more details about the full feature set of the game will likely become available as the title nears release.

CORRECTION: The original story reported Iwata's comments that "the next 'Animal Crossing' might be a game which relies upon add-on content sales" without reporting on the full context in which those comments were made.

199

It looks like connectivity will be key to these games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29968

The key to Smash Bros. on the Wii U and 3DS will be dual support, Masahiro Sakurai told IGN in an interview.

Sakurai said "There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game. I intend to change direction a little as we go. The key to that's going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U. I'm really just getting started on this so it's going to take time, but I'll come up with something that uses that link as the game's central axis, so I hope you're looking forward to it."

The simple addition of new characters does not appear like it will cut it for Sakurai this time around. He plans on focusing on connectivity between the 3DS and Wii U throughout development.

Super Smash Bros. was originally announced last year at E3 for both the Wii U and 3DS. However, due to his work on Kid Icarus: Uprising, Sakurai was unable to devote time to Smash Bros. development. With Kid Icarus's recent release, it appears Smash Bros. is now getting his full attention.
