Looks like preordering at Gamestop gets you a 12-track CD.

Note that the "freebie" CD that came with the Japanese release didn't include the (really nice) beginning/end tunes sung by Aoi Teshima, only incidental instrumental music that plays during gameplay.

[I was kinda pissed by that, since they're really nice tunes... (but OTOH, I then felt fully justified in downloading them from some site or another...)]

Im an outsider on the FFVII deal, i never liked that game, i never enjoyed it. Even in that time period i thought it was overated, and the gameplay was annoying, and the story was unimpressive.

Totally agree on that.  FFVII was pretty much the most over-rated game ever, a total horror-show of cringe-inducing melodrama and cardboard characters, which weren't helped by the crap presentation.

Even worse, it seemed to mark the point where Square's collective head started to swell beyond all imagining, a process no doubt much aided by all the frothing people did over FFVII.  After that, one gets the impression Square thought of themselves as "artists"...

Perhaps Heavy Rain will be the surprise savior and resurrect the fallen giant.

By depressing everybody who plays it so much that they snap and go on a huge game-buying spree...?

Actually I always thought the standard Nintendo method of indicating low healt, where the character starts panting, looking exhausted, etc, was really quite good... (it really helps during play, where sometimes you forget to keep track of the health bar)

I was about to ask if you didn't notice the constant beeping until you find some health

Oddly enough, no.  (It beeps?!)

Thats to bad. So Wii platform might be more dangerous than those HD ones after all. Everyone said games take to much to develop for on the other consoles, which I see. However, I see why we're a shitty audience to develop for too.

You got all that from the news that a single obscure developer went out of business?!

Well, one good thing about NATAL is we won't have remotes being thrown accidently across rooms and caving in other people's skulls....

Yeah, but you will have people hurling their bodies about wildly, which could be even more dangerous and lawsuit-inducing...

Hmm, since the xbox is most popular in the U.S., make that "hurling their massive bodies about wildly."

Really, though, I don't see how a relaxing-based game could be non-gimmicky.  I don't know how Nintendo could make it a system seller, it just seems weird to me.  Any idea of how to make it not involve a simple gimmick?

I dunno, I think a lot of games are relaxing, at least in part ... e.g., I love wandering around the landscape checking stuff out and looking for secrets in Zelda  ... and metroid ... etc, and find it extremely relaxing.

If they just put in more landscape and more secrets and cut out the boss fights etc... and they could put in more stuff for "fun" instead of for "challenge" -- let you ski down a mountainside in the big landscape, but don't time you, and don't give you a competitor, just for fun (after all, that's what most people do in the real world!).

Oooh, I'd buy that game!

Hmm, if that guy and the comic-book guy loved each other very much, and got married, and had kids...

Those kids would write for IGN.

Enough of this diversion though.  I'm going to spend some time with Wind Waker now just to spite my Wii.
So, by your logic, GCN was better then Wii. Wow, that is just... beyond words.

D_Average is being silly, but it's hardly impossible that someone might prefer the GC -- after all, it had basically the best traditional controller ever made, conveniently small disks, was graphically quite nice (certainly in the same class as the wii), had great games, a cute pudgy shape, ....

Certainly you can pick up Uncharted 1 for very cheap, and it's a great game.  [Uncharted 2 has some improvements, but they're not fundamental, just a few details here and there.]

Planning on getting a PS3, but need some quick advice.

- While HD makes the games look better, is SDTV ok?
- Does the Playstation Network cost anything?
- Is Bayonetta any good?

I have a (small) SDTV, it looks fine as far as it can do... the only "problem" is that some games seem to have a fixed 16:9 aspect ratio and use letterboxing on a 4:3 display (I thought I'd be annoyed by this, since my TV is already really small, but actually I ended up not really noticing after 5 seconds).

The playstation network seems to be free; I've only signed up tho, and haven't really done much there (no wifi, and only one network cable in my house, and it's annoying to switch it between boxes...).

Dunno about bayonetta; most of the coverage I've seen was drooling over the main character...

I was given Little Big Planet and Prince of Persia. I've been looking at the list of games and most PS3 games I would be interested in I've played. Has anyone tried Siren 3?

Two of my favorite games so far (I only got a PS3 when the slim was released) have been Uncharted / Uncharted 2 (the 2nd game is better in various ways, but the first is absolutely a great game, and well worth getting), and Assassin's Creed 2.

Assassin's Creed 2 may be a multi-platform title, but man, it has the most amazingly huge and intricate environments, and fun sandbox gameplay; it's also gorgeous, and avoids the "repetitive sparse environments" problem that some other sandbox games have.  Uncharted 2 has even cooler and more detailed environments, but it's very linear, and keeps you strictly within a certain path/area; A.C.2 lets you roam entire cities (and the surrounding countryside) freely, and still manages to be intricate and interesting!

The strong narrative drive of Uncharted2 and the free roaming of AC2 are good alternatives I think.

[I've avoided buying Bioshock as I get the impression it's way overhyped.]

It's very interesting... now I'm very curious what a pure-Aonuma Zelda will be like...

Not that I dislike the Miyamoto Zeldas but probably a game is better with one consistent direction.  TP in particular, is much more interesting in the early stages (first half?) with its much stronger narrative drive and characterization (compared to the latter part of the game, and indeed, compared to previous Zelda games).  What would it be like if he could finish the job...?

[I don't blame Miyamoto, btw -- he did what he had to do to get the game finished, and it's not like the result was bad, simply not what it might have been...]
