TalkBack / RE: Mother 3 Fan Translation Groups Teaming Up

You probably had a poor relationship with Mother as a child.  Sad.

Which one is couchmonkey?  You all look like ants to me.

6403
Exactly.  That's my point.  Some people like to use 'shift' buttons, while others prefer to use a direct type of button play.  It can work either way, as the first two users to respond to my post both used each play-style.

Roald Dahl could beat them all.

The game will be broken into several quarters.  We will start with pre-game, where all players will receive a role, being a Calvinball player if he or she is good w/o a role.  There will be a one-three hour break between every quarter, and most role-specific actions will take place during this time.  During a normal quarter, votes will be pm'ed to me then all votes will be revealed at the start of the next quarter.  For the first quarter, all votes will be made in the open, not pm'ed to me, so the game can start with conversation.

Calvin's Dad is a tricky role.  Ever fluctuating in the polls, Calvin's Dad wants to remain in the running, but not appear to want the job too much.  As the head of Calvin's household, Calvin's Dad cannot be killed by our mafia squad.  He's able to talk his way out of the kill using confusing backwards logic about where the sun lands and the like.  No one can perceive his importance, in fact, when investigated, he appears to be the standard Calvinball player.  However, he is not allowed to hint or reveal himself to anyone in anyway.

Calvin's Dad's aim is to be the third highest voted player of the quarter.  If he achieves this, he is given two options.  He can go to work, or he can cut out the roughhousing.  When Calvin's Dad goes to work, as a patent attorney, he is able to research the roles of three players of his choosing.  He may then choose a time in-between quarters to defend two players of his choice from the quarter vote.  This allows him to half the total number of votes any player receives in the proceeding quarter.  He may do this once for each time he goes to work, and it will be revealed that he has done so.  Votes will be revealed to be cut, but who voted whom shall be made known.  Because Calvin's Dad can choose whatever quarter he wants to use this ability, the votes which allowed him to use this technique will still be revealed.
His second option is to cut the roughhousing.  This stops every action from occurring in-between the quarter proceeding this choice.  This occurs immediately after being the third place-voted player, and as a result, the votes for the day will not be revealed, and instead, the actions that roles choose to perform in-between periods will be revealed, though they weren't performed.

As you can see, Calvin's Dad is a powerful role to have.  There is a trade-off, though.  If Calvin's Dad goes three days in a row without receiving at least two votes in a single day, he dies.

And I'm looking for potential player feedback on these roles as I create them.  I intend the game to run heavily on honesty of players.  No PMs will be allowed, except for the mafia players, and all conversation must be held in the appropriate forum topics, out in the open, or with me, if you have a question.  I'm not sure yet if we will have hidden roles in the game.  I'm still looking to hear some ideas, so let me know if you have any input!

I felt like the '96 Summer Olympics were a pretty big deal.  I haven't really felt that way since then.

6407
Well, I think B as a shift-type button would work pretty well.  The game already had similar options before, through using R+A, as well as a couple other things.  It's a matter of personal taste, though.

General Gaming / RE: Microsoft showing their true colors once again.

So basically, they plan to lose over one billion dollars on this.  What does that mean?  I'm not entirely sure, but as I've said before, I believe MS dis start to make a profit on these things at some point in the past year.

If we assume that the majority of broken consoles were premium ($400) versions, that 11 billion of the consoles have been shipped, that the cheapest way to fix the console is to replace them, and that the exact cost of replacing one is the cost of sale, we'll see that about 23% of 360s were defective.

However, honestly, I think the cost to fix should be less than $400, which would mean that an even higher percentage is messed up.

I would hate to be an MS shareholder right now.  They just threw out a billion dollars more on the 360, and will face absolutely no gains from this money.

The Space Mountain in Disneyland?  What did the ruin about it.  I've only been on the one in France and Orlando.

BTW, France's is a true-blue, full-sized coaster.  Not fair.

From what I've read, they actually started to 'make' money on consoles at some point later last year, though they spend much more than they make advertising and coercing.

Yeah, I plan to, I saw some of them when you mentioned them to me before.  I suppose I could add a few next's to the title of the thread, since I'm not entirely sure about when this will occur.  I wanted to set up some ground rules first, to get an idea of how things would work.

NWR Forums Discord / The next next Mafia game: Calvin Ball edition.
« on: July 03, 2007, 06:09:40 PM »
Alright, I may or may not decide to host the thing myself, but I'm more concerned with creating what could potentially be the wackiest mafia ever, so starting tomorrow, I'm going to be working on creating the rules for the first game of Mafia: Calvinball.

Definite roles:
Calvin
Hobbes
Rosalyn
Susie
Calvin's Dad
Calvin's Mom
Spaceman Spiff
Mrs. Wormword

I need ideas for each of these, though.  Calvin's Dad's role must deal with polls and voting, and whatnot, while his mother will have to work directly opposite of his role.

I'd like to add in Good Calvin, the transmogrifier, along with several other things, perhaps introducing an item system.  Anyways, we'll work out a great design eventually, it's not like there's a time limit or anything.

I think items would work well going to the player with the second largest amount of votes, or perhaps to someone who wins a secret ballot or something.  Like I said, throw out ideas, everything needs to relate to the comic strip origins.  Also, I need suggestions of how to draw up the sides, like kids vs. adults, boys vs. girls, imagination vs. reality, or Tyrannosaurs in F-14s vs. Triceratops.  Let's figure this thing out!  Break!

I have trouble getting into the 3D Zeldas, but I love most of the 2D ones.  I can't imagine why you wouldn't like Super Metroid, though.  To each his own, I suppose.

Now seriously, I thought just about everyone knew MS had been eying the property Nintendo owned but had no use for.  This wasn't really a surprise to me.

Well, the game will be great, no doubt, but with all this demand for a Wii-make compilation of the first two, Retro, or perhaps a newer scrub studio could attempt on revamping the control and graphics of the first two games, while also working on a multi-player aspect.

That's an option I think Nintendo will consider, but I have to say, I think Retro is about ready to do something a bit new and different, and I don't exactly see HAL or EAD developing a rich first-person shooter multi-player experience happily.  I imagine they'd want a Western developer, since the game is an FPS/FPA, but really, I don't think Nintendo likes to work with Western devs using their own IP.

Yeah, I like that kind of thinking, but I think it should be a stage.  Something like a castle or an airship, where all of the Koopa Kids are there, cameoing their battle styles in SMB 3 and SMW, with dry bones, thwomps, and magikoopas also attacking.  I think that would make for an interesting level.  Or perhaps a fun adventure stage.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official Wii Sales Thread
« on: July 02, 2007, 03:12:34 PM »
Analysts have been trying to positively qualify for Sony how these events have operated since the whole PS3/Wii debacle started.  The fact is that the unbearably expensive console has always failed.  On top of that, we've seen that the systems that are released with about a year of extra time sell well.  The result:  The PS3 flops.  That was obvious.  The 360 excels early. That was a given too.  The Wii, with it's price, exclusives, and new control was also destined to start strong, like the N64 did with mostly new 3D worlds.

The difference?  Whereas Sony had a head start, a better storage medium, and general developer support to power them through their first generation, now they really have none of these.  Last gen, Sony had a huge head start, along with untruthful, but powerful statements about power, they were able to defeat the Dreamcast before it launched, while instantly selling out for months, due to the belief that the system is amazing.  Essentially, it was able to kill the GC and Xbox, too, solely from the momentum the developers picked up on it.

This generation, the 360 came first, with a strong start, but Sony's untruthful lines about the PS3 and Blu-ray's abilities kept the majority of developers and consumers waiting to see.  What happened?  E3.  People saw that Microsoft had a solid line planned out, the Wii truly had the option to create brilliant control, and the PS3 decided it would be $500 or more, without any major draw beyond the 360.  At this point, I think everyone should have seen that the PS3 was going to receive a poor reception, knowing that price does matter, and that the other two consoles both seemed to be doing great.

Now, the Wii looks like it might push past the 360 this year.  Why?  One part because of the PS3's wait, one part because of the pretty large price difference in comparison to perceived value, one part hardware issues, and one part a slow Spring and Summer for games in general.  When the Wii is still selling out from one specific title, a slow Summer doesn't matter too much for that particular system, whereas it has hurt the 360 quite a bit.

Same. They really need to say, "Assist Character: Samurai Goroh" so we don't get excited.

My jaw dropped when I saw it as well.

Take a glance at the top right corner of the update, and it'll tell you if it's a character or an item, so you don't get your hopes up.

General Chat / RE: Can I ask for girl advice?
« on: July 01, 2007, 04:10:19 PM »
Oh no!  A girl is upset!  Whatever shall we do?

Buy her candy and flowers!

J/K GP, J/K.

My serious girl advice?  Don't listen to the group consensus, and make your own decisions about who you are interested in your love life.  I browsed over the initial part of what you wrote, though I've read it before, but this time, I noticed that you mentioned your fellow employees all thought the girl you should go out with was Ada.  Trust me when I say that listening to people for advice on who to date doesn't work, because the person who knows you best is you.  So far, I've had three relationships that other people have suggested I be in, and the first two were terrible.  The third was a little bit more successful, but mostly because I took my time getting to know her better first, and she was head-over-heels for me.  The relationship degenerated pretty quickly, though, partially because a lot of the people around me pressured me into it sooner than we should have gotten together, and she wasn't prepared to contribute to a mutual relationship.  As it turns out, one of the people guiding me into most of these relationships was actually using me as a scapegoat to avoid admitting that he was homosexual.  He would focus on trying to set me up as a way to divert attention from his dating life before he came out.

The point:  Make your own decisions when choosing who to date, and the speed that your relationship travels.  If you take advice on healthy relationships, get it from those who are in successful relationships that you admire.  By this, I don't mean hints on good dates, or dating tips and ideas, I mean what kind of person you should look for and who would make you happy.  If someone attempts to coerce you into dating someone you aren't interested in or only are a little interested in, just take your time and do what you feel is right, not what he or she suggests.  That's my 2 bits.

Oh, and if someone is in a happy relationship, don't mess with that.  It just causes extra stress for the couple, and could really screw with their happiness.

Also, you seem too infatuated.  Try to imagine what a relationship with Ada would be like, and you'll probably see that it would be nothing special, that you're just caught up on a girl you can't have.  I think most of us have been through that phase before, and the sooner you realize it, the better off you are.  If you dwell too long on the girl, it really could affect your outlook on a whole lot of things.
