NWR Feedback / Re: Friend code forum question.
« on: March 13, 2008, 02:16:13 AM »
"People can post in more than one if they feel they live in between the geographical lines, and everyone is free to add whoever will add them back via a complex series of PMs"

This is what I figured. I mean the regulars on here talk to each other often enough to just trade their codes via PM, or just look the person up in one of the region threads. The regions look pretty good, I mean generalizing all of Canada when it's bigger than the US is kind of funny, but it's good for the most part.

The only other concern that I can think of is that we don't have a whole lot of people in the friend code  thread right now, so how would it divide into these regions? I have a feeling there would be more than one region thread with only 2 or 3 people in it. Tough luck for them?

I don't actually post a lot in the forums but I do read a lot. I just only feel the need to post when I actually have something to contribute to the conversation that people haven't said yet or I just flat out disagree with someone's post. I guess I would prefer if I wasn't left out of the loop because of my low post count, but that's just because I'm on the wrong side of the rule, I can understand the idea of not wanting to add people who aren't regulars.

What I would rather see is perhaps a more region specific organization of friend codes. whether this would be done with more than one thread or not, I don't know, but I live in Toronto, Canada and have been flat out not allowed to join friend matches with some of the people on my list. That might be because nintendo's servers are so busy, but still it would be helpful to know how close people are to me  and how much lag to expect.

Diddy and Lucas are my favourites so far, but i've had problems against my brother when he uses Falco, who's forward smash is incredible, and his sideB move makes his recovery actually good.

Am I the only one who can't get this on iTunes yet? I've had this problem with the last couple podcasts also, as I haven't been able to get them until some time after the podcast is up on the site. I've started listening to on mp3 anyways.

PS. I'm glad that there is some starfox discussion, as it's one of the few threads i've been compelled to participate in.

I don't think that an epic story would necessarily be a problem for Starfox, it would just have to be treated properly. What Earthbound was to RPG's Starfox would have to be for it's genre (space shooters?). Starfox is the perfect vehicle to poke fun at an archetype while still, for the most part, following the archetype. It could be done, but I wouldn't want the story to become the main focus at the expense of gameplay. The gameplay should be tight and fast, and that is something that is far more necessary than a great story. I don't think that we should have to make a choice though. Why decide between story and gameplay, can't they both be good?

As I own the Gamecube game, I probably won't pick this one up. There is no room in my game budget for games I've already played (except Earthbound, give it up Nintendo!). If they do plan on implementing RE4 controls it will be interesting to see how they pull it off. I'm not convinced that the controls would really work with the environments in RE0, and the feeling of all the other RE games are much different than 4.

The controls in 4 allowed you to take on more enemies, and made you more mobile, so the scare factor was from being overwhelmed by enemies. The pre-RE4 games derived their scares from enemies jumping out at you and the crappy controls and fixed camera view complemented that.

Oh, and I also agree that if they wanted to remake a RE game 2 or 3 would have been a much better choice. I wouldn't even mind if they remade code veronica, as I played it years ago on a friends playstation....

OK so what i really want to know is how did you take that as a personal attack.  at no time did i ever say any thing about being secret ps360 fans or any thing like that. and hey i like a good liner game from time to time... and i hate grand theft auto and elder scrolls.  all I'm saying as far as liner is concerned is the on rails thing was a crutch when these systems didn't have the processing power to make a grander game.

i have always believed if it ain't broke dont fix it.  but lets face it after the last few games we have had starfox is broke.

The last few games have all gone with a lot of non-linear levels. The last game in the series that most people would agree is great, Star Fox 64, was also the last one to be predominantly linear, and I don't think that's a coincidence.

I gave up after he said he had never played SF64  :(

Edit: haha starfox65

Ditching the rails =/= returning to its roots.

QFT

Being able to fly anywhere would be so strange for a starfox game. Part of the fun in the 64 game was finding new paths in each level. I know it's been said already but having the game on rails allows the developer to place obstacles and changes in your path that have to be overcome. It's like running through a gauntlet. I don't understand how you could be a fan of starfox and hate the idea of on rails gameplay.

I wouldn't mind on foot missions if they were done right, but I just want a kickass starfox game again, and I think the best way to get that is to go back to flying. Maybe another game could be all on foot fox, but I would rather see one thing done right than two or more things poorly implemented. And if I have to make the choice between fox in an awring and fox on foot, I'll take fox in the air every time.

As for controls.. i dont like the idea of aiming with the IR Pointer. Maybe its just me but cocentraiting on two things at once in mario galaxy like that was sometimes confusing and disorienting.

just out of curiosity, have you ever played sin and punishment? It is a little disorienting, but I think it would actually be easier with the IR function acting as your aimer. Also, unlike mario galaxy, the action is on rails, it is significantly easier to navigate your ship which is on a predetermined path than mario in a 3D environment.

What I am suggesting as far as single player vs multiplayer is a complete integration of both. In SF64 your team is with you on almost every mission, so allow those characters to be controlled by players who move on their own different paths through the level. If you want to play single player, nothing changes, the characters are just back to being computers.

The option to play as different characters also offers different paths through each level.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting a remake of the 64 game, I'm just saying that there are a lot of key elements that I would like to see brought back from the 64 game.

I would really like to see them return to the in ship on rails type game that was starfox64. I've thought about it quite a bit and I think that it can be done without having the game be quite as short as the 64 game. Pick 1 out of the four characters on the starfox team, in each level each player flies along a predetermined path, but like the 64 games this path can be changed through certain events. Each characters path is distinct within each level, but the paths intertwine often.

This way you can have 4 player online co-op, each player controlling a member of team fox and working together in the parts where there paths intersect. All paths will eventually meet at the boss, switch into all range mode if the situation calls for it, and the four players can work together to bring down the boss.

The controls would be most convenient if the analog stick on the nunchuck controlled flight and the pointer was used to aim. Headsets would be awesome, but I think that they could get away with assigning the annoying sayings of each character to each direction on the control pad of the remote. As long as you have "get this guy off me" "follow me" "thanks for the help" and something slightly insulting, what more do you really need to say. Plus I could annoy my friends a lot more with slippy's voice than my own.

The moral of story, 4 player co-op is a must.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What makes Zelda Zelda?
« on: February 19, 2008, 08:59:15 PM »
I can see both sides of this argument, but to say that TP is not a Zelda game is insane. If anything, TP is too zelda, and that's the problem. I enjoyed TP a lot. I felt that the dungeons were extremely well done and the boss fights were fun. The game would toy with your expectations because it was so similar to OoT, which I thought was clever. I was blown away when the magnet in the fire temple first pulled me up to the ceiling with the iron boots. But then there were elements that felt underdeveloped. The use of wolf link, the sword techniques (they really should have introduced sword/shield using enemies earlier i the game) and I felt like some of the items really could have been used more. But this only tells me that the game was not perfect. The only other complaint that I had was that it was too easy, but I think most games are heading that direction, which is too bad, but I don't mind as much if they are still fun.

What it comes down to is that the only reason TP isn't seen as better than OoT is that OoT came first. TP is better than OoT in every way. So this I suppose brings me to my question. It might be another thread but all the complaining begs the asking, what is it that you want to see from the next zelda game?

While I understand the fox/falco hate, it saddens me. I play as fox, my friend plays as link and we have some great fights. I used fox before I knew anything about tourny players and now everybody hates me. I really do hope that the heavy-weights are given a fair shot in brawl, but if I still like the way that fox plays I'm going to use him. Honestly, there are so many new characters that I want to try out (sonic, pit and olimar) as well as revamped old players that i'd like to feel out that I won't have a main character until a few weeks after I get the game. If it happens to be fox (or I hope wolf cause he looks bad ass) then that's cool with me, I just wish people wouldn't cry about it.

Finally beat this game tonight. I love it, it makes me want to buy contra 3 on vc. I like the flame thrower better in C3, but the powered up flame shot in 4 is strong as hell, and it's a nice throw back to super C. The final boss fight was great, I beat it on my last continue and mostly because I had a powered up laser that I would switch out of right before i would get hit. Just out of curiosity, has anyone else beat this on normal or hard yet? I know that easy mode leaves out the last two levels, I wonder if there is any more to hard?

I'd like to see Joe and Mac for the SNES, at least I think the name of the game was Joe and Mac...
The one with the cave men and the bosses were the red and blue devil. I don't know if it will be as good as I remember as I was quite young when I played it, but I'd probably buy it again to check it out.

Rented this last night and beat it on hard with a friend. Good times. I can't stress enough the point about how the game encourages you to destroy the environment. My friend called me the tornado all night and yelled at me several times for shoting out all the lights.

Quick question though, are there only 9 missions to play on 2 player? For some reason I thought there was more than that. Is it the end after you kill nemesis or is there something else that just needs to be unlocked?

I completely understand where you're coming from. I've been spoiled by zelda games for far too long to be blown away by God of War. Also, the first level on the ship is easily the best looking and most exciting level of the game, it's like they spent 75% of their time on the first level, finished it and realized that they had to finish the whole rest of the game in time for release. Also, I beat it in one night at my friends house, sure it took me 11 straight hours and I pulled an all nighter to do it, but it was worth it.

To me, this was a great game that I would never buy. It was pretty short and somewhat superficial, but I liked it a lot. I think about it like pikmin or luigi's mansion, I genuinly enjoyed those games, but I was glad I didn't have to buy them as they were fairly short and once I had beaten them I was done with them.

I've yet to face any one that i've added as a friend

I've got ship parts for trading, so if anyone wants to trade just let me know where and when.
Also, just out of curiosity? what are your guys records like and what are you ranked? I'm pretty sick of battling people who's name is still Link and have only played 2 matches only to get disconnected on because I spank them after the first turn.

I know nothing about this game, but just hearing about it briefly has piqued my interest for some reason. I guess I thought initially that it would be kind of like shadow of the collosus, but with organic monsters instead of stone goliaths and more of them.

After looking up some game play videos it looks to me as though it more follows the "slash with your giant sword until everything dies" route, which is kind of a shame. Although these are just wild conclusions i've drawn from watching 5 minutes of game play, so if anyone would like to enlighten me on the finer points of these games I am quite interested.

Either way, this looks good for the wii, I hope that it comes stateside aswell.

TalkBack / RE:REVIEWS: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:52:56 PM »
I have to say, I'm a "zelda vet" and I like this game a lot so far. I'm only past the second temple, but i've done a fair bit of exploring on the high seas and seem to be easily distracted by the online multiplayer. A lot of the negative things in this review were things that I discovered and corrected in the first 15 minutes of gameplay. I hold the stylus in my right hand, so hold the DS in my left, index finger on the L button and thumb on the d-pad. If I'm walking left, I move my hand below the screen or above the screen depending on whether i'm running left and up or left and down. The Item switching and manipulation problem is a quick fix with a little help from my left hand. I need to use the boomerang? hold L and draw your path. Want to switch items? press right (i think?) on the d-pad and the list of items will apear at the bottom of the screen, from there its a quick tap and hold L and you're switched and have the item drawn. Really these solutions are fairly simple, but now that you don't have to spend time staring at the back of your hand and fiddling with items, you can enjoy the game, it's actually quite charming.

I kind of like the timed temple, makes you think. I admit that i haven't been too far in the game yet so i guess that might change, but it sounds to me like the same as when people cried about MM only giving you three days to beat the game

PS. I love the multiplayer, and I throw down the gauntlet to anyone on this forum haha!
