TalkBack / Re: Two New Wii RPGs Revealed
« on: February 03, 2010, 02:07:29 AM »
The more I read about these two games the more excited I am for them. It has been some time since I've really been into RPG's. I used to love them during the SNES era, and with Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and FF4 things were good. I went through a little bit of a return to RPG's with FF9 which I followed up by playing 7 and 8, but FF4 stayed my favourite FF. I'm actually playing through FF10 right now, but I have a lot of the same problems with it that Ian has indicated.

I think that part my problem with RPG's is that the main character seems to always wonder whether or not they should do the right thing, but their never seems to be any question about what the right thing is. I would like to see a story where the main character isn't debating whether or not they should be the hero, but facing choices that are morally ambiguous and not being sure about what the "right" course of action is. There was a little bit of that idea in FF4, and I think that is why I find it to be the most compelling FF.

The video for xenoblade looks pretty neat, and I'm interested to see what this previous creator of FF can come up with for The Last Story. With a name like "The Last Story" they are clearly setting the game up as a competitor for final fantasy, and I think that competition breeds the best innovations and most exciting games. I look forward to getting sucked back into the RPG genre again, I hope that these games turn out to be good and I'm not excited for nothing.

I think that the positive word of mouth might give this thing legs though. I haven't bought it, and wasn't really considering buying it even after seeing the positive reviews, though I would have liked to play it. Now, because I am still hearing about how good it is and I see the game impressing more people (like Jonny) I am actually considering picking this up. All the talk has really got me curious, and I don't think I'll get the chance to play it any other way.

You should send them a second package with your shoes in it, maybe it will turn into an x-box. Does that work in reverse? could be worth a try.

Well, tis the season, and I'm thinking about getting back into this game. Thing is that my town is at this point an insurmountable mess. I'm thinking about reseting the town and starting from scratch. The only thing that has prevented me from doing this on a whim is that I have some designs that I put a lot of work into that I would hate to see go. Also I still have some friend codes on this account.

So what should I do? Start a new town or suck it up and face the music in the town that I'm in? Either way I'd like to get back into playing, and it would be cool if I could play with some of you guys.

Thirded. Though the newest, just plain "Prince of Persia" was also quite impressive.

Meh, it was mostly an exercise of remembering which button you press for which wall element.

That's better than remembering to press the same button for every wall element like Assassin's Creed.

True, I jest though. I think that Jonny characterized the pessimism of a nintendo fan quite well on kombo breaker when he said (I think regarding mario galaxy2?) that he has no doubt that it will be a great game and fun to play, but he worries that there won't be that sense of surprise in the game. I think that nintendo fans don't have to worry about 1st party efforts being shoddy, so we take the fact that the game will play well, be fun and by all accounts a great game as a given. So when we discuss the games the only thing to scrutinize are the other things that aren't givens, like the feeling of surprise, or whatever nits there are to pick.

The growing staleness of some of the classic series that nintendo has in their roster is a legitimate issue, but really, these are still great games. I was watching my brother play twilight princess today and I thought to myself that I really enjoyed it while I was playing it, but now after the fact, what I remember most is that I thought it was too easy and some other idea's I had about how it could have been better. But do you remember when the first magnet lifts you to the ceiling by your iron boots, or when you first get to zora's domain and you're all, this is it? and then you see them under the ice. Those were some holy **** moments that made that game awesome. I don't know, now I'm just going off on a tangent...

Back on topic, I found it interesting listening to other people. I feel like I know the cast of RFN, I know what to expect from each and who's tastes align with mine. One thing that this podcast made me think of is that the crew of RFN is really agreeable with one another, kombo breaker seems to encourage arguing more, and I think I liked that. For instance, I have been interested in little kings story for a while based on the word of Jonny and James alone, but then one of the kombo guys didn't like it and they incited Jonny to defend his claims that it was good. The argument gave me a better idea about the game (which I am still interested in because I am Jonny loyal) but it has helpful to peal back the reasons as to why someone likes or doesn't like something. Sometimes people just say, oh it has shitty controls, and it's nice to know that is a concern, but what if that person is just bad at the game or there are workarounds, these are the things that come out of frank discussion that you don't usually get from reviews. I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing a little more of that in RFN.

RFN is still my bread and butter though, and I'm not going anywhere ;)

Just gave this show a listen and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. RFN is the only podcast I've ever listened to, but the guys on this show were quite good. It was interesting listening to Jonny in a different context. Also, is it strange that the guys on this podcast are far less cynical about nintendo than the RFN crew? Curious.....

When you say that you've lost -1 pound, does that mean you've lost one pound or gained one pound? You can see the conflict of the double negative in this case, it might be easier to just say "cumulative weight change" rather than loss.

I haven't been able to commit myself to either wii fit or any other balance board fitness games. I think that just weighing myself everyday and being mindful of my health would be the push I need to get me back in shape too. I'll keep an eye on this feature, I'm enjoying it so far, so keep up the good work.

I just got this game! I've played a little online, got the glitch a couple times, but other than that it seems good. I've dropped my code in the friend code thread, i'm in the process of adding everyone in there. Looking for some good games.

Story's not important. What's important, as Star Fox 64 proved, is coming up with lines of dialogue that will be quoted as internet memes for years and decades to come.

^You gonna listen to this MONKEY?!

^Your father used to help me like that too!

^Do a Barrel Roll!

Seriously, I'm disappointed in you lot for not starting with that one.

We were just avoiding the obvious,
"Oh look I've been saved by fox, isn't that swell!"

TalkBack / Re: Jimmy Page and Jack White Dismiss Music Games
« on: June 24, 2009, 04:07:24 AM »
Wow, there is a lot I could say about this. First off, I play guitar, and have for quite some time. I can play most of the songs that are on guitar hero, and could before the games came out. I don't enjoy the games myself, because I find them frustrating, but I've played them with friends before and had a good time.

First, I'm surprised at the uproar over these two comments. I mean, two talented musicians basically saying that GH is just a game.... is this something to be surprised or upset about? Sure it's good that these games are creating awareness of a wider array of music, but isn't it sad that a video game that doesn't actually teach you very much about music at all is the most effective tool we seem to have? That just seems to be the tone of these guy's comments. And Brandogg, I don't think that Jimmy Page can be over rated. I know that everybody has already gushed all over him, but really, the man is undeniably incredible.

Second, does anybody remember Tony Hawk Proskater 2? Or how about the skateboarding fad as a whole? Music is constantly being tied to social events, so why not gaming? I probably wouldn't be a fan of Lagwagon without the appearance of May 16th in Tony hawk.

In conclusion, I think that there are much greater tragedies in the modern world of music to be concerned about... like the death of the album, the lack of talent, the over-production or lady gaga. But seeing as this is a videogame board, here we are.

I got back to my town today and started pulling weeds and re-planting flowers. It'll probably take at least a week to return my town to it's former glory. I'm also working on making hybrids. The saddest part of playing again was that I had this one really nice garden made of all yellow flowers and they're all gone. Also, there were 5 cockroaches in my house... I killed the roaches though, so no need to call the exterminator. I'd like to see some of you're guys towns, it's been forever since I've been to Maxi's of DJunknown's.

I feel like I should come back to this game as well, but I'm going away for 6 weeks in July so I'm hesitant to get consumed by it again. Also, I has a crap ton of flowers and no weeds when I stopped and I'm scared to see what my town looks like now. I dread the thought.

« on: June 05, 2009, 01:42:07 PM »
To be honest, I have a lot of wii games compared to other systems that I have owned, but I haven't really bought anything for my wii in quite some time. There just aren't that many games that I feel compelled to get and I don't have the money right now to take chances on full price games like I did when the wii first came out.

To be fair both Wario land shake it and PunchOut  appeal to me, I just can't bring myself to buy them. I'm concerned about the length of PunchOut (and I never played any of the other ones) and I don't really have an excuse for Wario... I'm pretty sure I'd like that game.

However, I can name 5 games off the top of my head that I will be buying day 1. Red Steel 2, Conduit, Mario Galaxy 2 and NSMBW (although I might wait and see on that last one). I think that this is a marked improvement over last year. I mean, at least i'm looking forward to something right?
