Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why Nintendo?
« on: September 06, 2003, 09:05:37 PM »
Hmmm... So you have a lot of games but not a lot of money? Just get those good grades, and if you want a job, give a whirl. But I must tell you, even with a job, you're hard pressed to buy all the games you want. I look at these wish lists and say "Dammnnn! You guys have a lot of time to kill!" I, on the other hand is a working stiff pushing 40 hours (apparently overtime is a sin). I (had to) took this semester off, but that's another story.

Anyway, here's my little list for the rest of 2003. And I do mean little.

Definate GCN games:
Viewtiful Joe
Metal Gear Solid:TTS
Mario Kart Double Dash!!

Maybe GCN Games
True Crime:Streets of LA
Prince of Persia:Sands of Time
XIII

Definate GBA games
Final Fantasy Tatics Advance
Sword of Mana
Super Mario Advance 4:Super Mario Bros. 3 (Damn Nintendo for making me buy this game again! And they know I will!)

Maybe GBA Games
Sonic Advance 2 (Yeah yeah, I've been holding out on this one)
Mario and Luigi (Still 2003 bound?)

There you have it. Now to squeeze in some F-Zero and SC2...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rumors back FF VII & XII
« on: September 06, 2003, 08:35:53 PM »
I remember a Looooong time ago there was a rumor of a FFVII re-release on PS2, but for obvious reasons that were mentioned, didn't come to fruition.

If you read they recent PGC mailbag (Read it now if you haven't) The one who's heading FFXII is not too fond of the big N. Its fun to speculate, since Square(Enix) have done a couple things that they normally wouldn't do.

A)Getting back with Nintendo
B)Doing a DIRECT sequel to a Final Fantasy game (FFX-2 anyone?)
C)Making games for more than one platform

I'm a bit skeptical though, since there's a good chance that if you REALLY wanted to play FFVII, you either have a PS1, had a PS1 or that awful PC port (Eidos dropped the ball on porting it. The 3d accelerated graphics were nice, but it would always hang up on my system, which EXCEEDED the system requirments by a large margin.) But I could probably say the same about Metal Gear Solid, and now we have a re-make that I'm sure many Nintendo gamers will eat up. The Sonic Adventure 2 release went off with a bang as mentioned earlier. If its a tastefully done Re-make (Right now Capcom seems to be king of Remakes with RE1.) I won't have a problem playing it again. Then again, original content is usually preferable.

General Gaming / RE:uh oh, I like VF4e better than SC2
« on: September 06, 2003, 08:07:34 PM »
I'm not going to spout which ones better, I've seen flamewars erupt in other sites . I've played VF4 in the arcades, and while it throws me a bone the first few fights, I get whupped and have to dish out more quarters often. SC and SC2 on the other hand, I went quite a while before needing to the machine.

From what other reviews have said, VF4e's single player edges out SC2's quest mode. It sounds great on paper, wish I could try out. I personally liked SC1's mission mode better than SC2, but that's my quirky tastes.

The bottom line is, if you like it, play it! Don't be ashamed by saying you like X game better than Y game. You might get a couple WTF's, but whatever. As long as you like it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo gets the Shaft again!
« on: September 06, 2003, 07:45:13 PM »
Just had to chime in again with more pennies to add in the pile:

I agree with BrianSLA's assement: Rockstar is putting the hurt on Nintendo (North America wise) by bringing their games to every other system save for the big N.  Rival fanboys(Like we listen to their rants) and casual gamers(Who outnumber hardcore gamers) will point the finger at Nintendo gamers saying "nyah Nyah! You don't have this..." While Hell has frozen over a few times this console generation, I don't expect Rockstar to go anywhere near a Nintendo system in the future. Some top air tight-exclusive (GTA is available on PC after all) mature game will have to fill that void

I disagree however with BrianSLA's statement that True Crime release on ALL systems is no big deal. Remember those game cancellations (For arguments sake let's skimp on the actual quality, lets look at numbers) Mace Griffin and Mafia? They cancelled GCN ports in mid-production stating it wouldn't "sell."  Other companies take note and follow that example.

Activision (Publisher of True Crime) is taking a gamble here because:A) They could've have saved resources for other projects B)See profit potential. Whereas other companies pulled the plug on GCN because they saw their 'folly', Activision is still Gung-ho at this time (Unless I somehow jinx it and they stop the GCN presses at the last minute). While not being exclusive does steal some of that thunder, its a good lithmus test to see if Nintendo gamers REALLY want that type of content. If not, Activision takes note, competitors take note, and pull out.

Before I end, let me stir the a pot a bit. GTA has been the main game discussed here. What about Rockstar's other hit, Max Payne? The 2nd chapter (Which is done in a film noir fashion!) is due out in October. Obviously the first had an impact because many other companies are copying their elements (Dead to Rights anyone, or is that strictly coincendental?). Is this another example of Nintendo getting 'Shafted' again?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New interview with Denis Dyack about MGS:TS!
« on: September 05, 2003, 09:39:37 PM »
Looks like Nintendo has Denis Dyack on a leash! Maybe they tortured him for leaking a rumor about the Metal Gear remake (Remember he said he'd like to work on such a game in jest, and pow! Here it is!)

As far as GBA connectivity, it could work, but a better overall product is better.

As far as Kid Icarus is concerned, there appears to be two theories: The upcoming Dead Phoenix from Capcom maybe Kid Icarus in disguise. The 2nd is that an interview with GamePro said Denis Dyack proffessed interest in it. Way too early to tell, but its fun speculating.

Now whatever happened to Too human...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Eidos drops all Gamecube support
« on: September 05, 2003, 09:09:58 PM »
hmmm... don't have to much to say that hasn't been said. Though I got a few tidbits:

While some tout as Mario Sunshine as the dark horse of the series, at least it was technically sound. Its more than I can say for EIDOS and the boys at Core (What went wrong? 8 month delay?) Its a shame, since Lara had (and may have if Crystal Dynamics don't screw up) the potential to be great, but just couldn't be fulfilled. Her GBA venture wasn't too bad...

Unless Eidos can pull a GTA3 out of their hat (Game that sells like mad, not specifically that genre), Nintendo can just shrug it off like it was nothing.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo gets the Shaft again!
« on: September 05, 2003, 08:45:42 PM »
Wow! I'm loving the feedback from all directions. Its nice to have a nice, intelligent thread that hasn't gone up in flames! Now for my 2 cents:

For those wanting a a GTA-esque game, you're in luck. True Crime: Streets of L.A is slated to come out on all three platforms. Worst case scenerio is that its a GTA type clone (Hardly, since it boasts some features such as an intricate hand-to hand combat system, GTA was mainly about your gun or occasional baseball bat.) Its coming out in Novemember, so unless they pull gamecube support at the 11th hour, your wish will come true. Now all that needs to happen is for GCN users out there to show that truly want these types of games on Nintendo's system when it comes. If not, publishers will be proved right, and will go elsewhere. Take that for what you will.

If I'm not mistaken, Rockstar(and subsideries) have avoided nintendo like the plague. The exceptions are Smugglers Run and Conflict Desert Storm. Whereas even the most stubborn publisher may have gone to the GBA, Rockstar has gone on record saying "GBA does not suit our needs." So if they go portable with N-Gage, PSP or some other contender, they might have the power to stick it to Nintendo in its most profitable area. They just bought out TDK interactive, saying it will delve into 'younger demographics' and with Rockstars money, it sounds like they really, really want to wipe Nintendo off the face of the earth.

I'm not going to say what Nintendo needs and need not do: I'm just somebody with too much time on my hands! Though I will say that more Exclusive Mature titles wouldn't hurt now would it? And while I'm at it, an official Nintendo mag geared for the 18 and up crowd. Doesn't have to be trashy, maybe something like good ol PGC

I'm done now. Thanks for listening and keep those ideas running!

General Chat / RE:Being a Good Neighbor
« on: September 05, 2003, 08:06:11 PM »
I agree with Mouse Clicker. What other people may call  "strict" I call it "sensible."  There are some sites that fit the Mouse Clicker's  description to the letter. I won't say names (To protect the stupid) but their avatars are yay big, and their Signitures have these HUGE Jpegs that take up half the damn post (Which usually contain drivel anyway.) For some reason, they tend to be fanboys mouthing off garbage (Speaking 1337 and whatnot). When I had dial-up it was a pain so agonizing, I needed Tynonol to fix me up. After realizing there wasn't enough intelligence on those forums, I avoid them and feel smarter for doing so. PGC gets props for keeping the peace (and sanity)

As far as being a good cyber-neighbor, its the thought that counts.  If they spit it back at you, snitch! The rules are there for a reason.

TalkBack / RE:BloodRayne Movie in the Works
« on: September 05, 2003, 07:29:31 PM »
30 million? Didn't Arnold Schwazenager get 30 million just to do T3? Wonder what they can pull off...

Seriously though, who's idea is it to get lesser known franchises on the big screen? Granted, Blood Rayne had a killer ad campaign last year, but reviews simply touted it as an ordinary 3rd person adventure. Its not Splinter Cell or Metroid Prime which people still talk about pushing 1 year later. It had a cute idea, they advertised like hell for it, but still, it had elements that could be found in better games (Max Payne, Soul Reaver, Ratchet and Clank, dare I say Mario Sunshine?). Oh well, its Hollywood trying to win that losing battle of appealing to gamers and movie goers alike...

Speaking of House of the Dead, what happened to it? I remember Gamespot doing a blurb on it a while back, but have since fell off the radar. Its a worth a look if nothing else, how they can stay true to the source material.

TalkBack / RE:True Crime Soundtrack to Feature Big Names
« on: September 04, 2003, 08:20:21 AM »
Jay-O-Felony? Wasn't he a one hit wonder? Oh well.

As with all big liscence games, I hope they didn't just didn't pour all the money into the soundtrack alone. But when you have N.E.R.D (aka the Neptunes) you know you have some banging beats to shoot with. Though a Korn track during a car chase wouldn't be that bad either....

The nay sayers have deemed this a GTA clone. But at least Nintendo gets one more mature game in its lineup.

On a side note, how did they get Snoop Dogg to record? I believe he got in trouble with the law recently (Something about purposely filming underage girls for Girls gone Wild?) I guess he's got the bank roll (and some sticky-icky) to keep that on the downlow.

Hmmm... 2 million in 3 weeks? That's a lot of virtual PigSkin!

Why did it sell so well? Here is my simple formula:

Americans LOVE football.
Americans Love Videogames.
Americans LOVE Football Video Games!

The main reason people buy what is essentially the same game year after year is because of the updated rosters. Consumers are more than happy to shell out 50 dollars year after year to simulate the Current NFL season (Or play those fantasy matchups.)

Until there's a way to update rosters (online perhaps) on one particular title, expect the same trend, year after year.

I'm in the minorty here because I'm not A) A sports afficianado (The Olympics are the exception, my eyes are glued every time they're on) B)Buy sports games (Though NBA Street is the exception too.) I don't hate the genre, I just don't buy it.

Like I said, its my whacked out theory. For all we know, Nolimits19's theory might've been the case! As far as quality goes, Gamecube has it in spades.  It could be the taste of European Gamers differ from ours in a way (North American gamers.) Just as how the Sega Exclusives on XboX, Jet Set Radio future, Shenmue II, and Panzer Dragoon Orta were top quality games, North American gamers didn't pick up on it(Even though JSRF and PDO had good ad campaigns). They were playing what's 'cool' (DOAX, Sports games, Tony Hawk-esque titles etc.)

Again, this a gamer from the other side of the Atlantic trying to reason why XboX gets the gold. So don't it take too seriously. And its not like they didn't walk away with nothing....

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Dead Phoenix NOT canned!
« on: August 29, 2003, 08:29:39 PM »
WoW! Looks like there has been a case of miscommunication. I saw the original news on Gamespot where they said it was cancelled (Along with PS2's Red Dead Revolver.) Gamespot has NEVER lead me wrong before but I guess there's a first time for everything. Looks like they'll have to stand corrected...

As far as Kid Icarus goes, Looks like Denis Dyack has just stirred the pot. If you check out GamePro, they've got blip of him talking about future products after the Metal Gear remake. He proffessed  "interest" in Kid Icarus. What about too human? Will that EVER see the light of day? (Remember he said a similiar thing when saying he was 'interested' in making a Metal Gear game.)

As far as Dead Phoenix , its good to know its back on track. But we haven't even seen a definative release date for Killer 7. (My hunch is we'll see it stateside summer/fall 2004 but I'm no expert.) Meanwhile, we have Viewtiful Joe to anticipate! Henshin-a-go-go baby!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo is working to make online games.
« on: August 29, 2003, 08:12:09 PM »
I remember in past-recent interviews where Shiggy and Nintendo Pres. Iwata said that they weren't fully ignoring online capabilities. They said that the current structures (XboX live and Sony letting publishers do their own online support) isn't too feasible in the long run. Nintendo will get there, but it will be on their own terms.

One kooky idea I have if they made a Pokemon online. The current Pokemon model is BEGGING to made into an MMRPG; I'm no real fan of Pokemon myself, but if they made it online, I'll be the first to sign up (First Westener anyway )

Well Grey, I'm by no means and expert (There I said it, so sue me.) my only guess is that Microsoft didn't take its Euro Gamers for granted. One example is the release dates for games are far apart from the U.S ones. The reward system that's coming stateside (Soon I hope.) didn't give its customers too much in return for their loyalty. (Didn't they get like wallpapers or something?)  Microsoft must be doing something to satiate gamer's appetites that Nintendo isn't doing. XboX live? Their games? Who knows. If any Euro Gamers out there have insight, feel free, that's just my whacked out theory.

But best publiusher isn't that bad is it? Its another plaque you can put in the NOE's trophy room (If they had one.)

Nice One! Here's another

NB: That was a close one. Hopefully Bob will make it. Alright, next up is...Pikachu?! What?

Pikachu: Pika-chu!

NB: Who let the Pokemon in? We said specifically NO Pokemon! Nintendo is pushing it... Well since you're here, we know you've been in all the Pokemon games. Let's see if you can fight. Bring in...Taki!

Pikachu: Pika? *Starts charging up*

Taki: Hmmph! *Strikes with Mekki-Maru but slices air instead.* Hmmm?

Pikachu: Pika-Pika! *Latches on to Taki's Leg and starts letting out static*

NB: Hey, not bad. No one gave Taki this much trouble in while. But We just don't see it...the promos, the ad space... plus its so...so...yellow. Hey Taki! Don't worry, just let it have it!

Taki:Hai! *Kicks the wall behind her with Pikachu still attatched. Pikachu is knocked out cold. A portion of the wall is missing*

NB: Can someone call the Pokemon Doctor or something? Don't worry Taki, we'll get the wall fixed. I think we need a break. Tell security if there's any Pokemon in the audition area to throw them out! NO more Pokemon!

General Chat / Soul Calibur II Auditions....
« on: August 27, 2003, 08:13:49 PM »
Hey what's happening out there in RadioLand (Actually the web but whatever.) In celebration of Soul Calibur II's domestic release I just wanted to post a fun, humorous thread on how Namco (and Nintendo) went through selecting the excluisve character for gamecube. Post your stories on how other Nintendo mascots tried out, but couldn't make the cut. I'll start things off with everyone's favorite Italian Plumber.

Namco's Board (NB)kay, first up, Mario? is Mario here?

Mario: Yessir! Its-a-me!

NB: Mr.Mario why should we select you to be in Soul Calibur 2?

Mario: I've been in-a lot of Genres. Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Smash Bros, Smash Bros Meele, Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Ma...

NB: Alright, Alright we get the point.  Ok, show us you got. Pretend you're in a fight with Astaroth. He's big, hulking, and his Axe has more range than Pavoratii (Bad joke, spare me..)

Mario: Lets-a go!  . *Begins series of triple jumps and somersaults akin to Mario 64 and Sunshine. Starts going off walls and out of nowhere throws fireballs.*

NB: (Whisper whisper.. Okay send in the real Astaroth!)

[Enter Astorth stage left]

Astaroth: Huuuurrrrrahhhhh! *Swings axe and hits Mario's belly.*

Mario: oooo mama mia.....

NB: Thank you Mr.Mario, but I think you're not cut out for Soul Calibur Though we wish you luck on your futher endeavors  . Can someone get a stretcher? And uhhhh, can someone the next victim...errr auditioner?

Alright people go for it!

Vroenis, you might want to pass on PN03. The Japanese gave it a lukewarm response, and Game Informer (Unreliable but they have a review nonetheless) gave it a 6 at best. I'd just as soon wait for Viewtiful Joe but its your money...

I was lucky to get F-Zero today (or yesterday?) I walked in to Gamestop, and had a handful left. Simply put...this ain't Mario Kart. Prepare to learn some technique, and don't comfy when the you take the lead. One full second is the difference between 1st and 12th place.

As far as AX, it seems September will the month it graces arcades. Now all you need is to find those arcades

The card you're talking about is probably the liscense card you get when you first play AX. Its like a memory card so you can get the unlockables in the arcade. I'm just worried its gonna cost a dollar a pop, and if GX is any indication...I better start saving a stash when it comes out!

TalkBack / RE:Soul Calibur II Now Available
« on: August 26, 2003, 07:37:36 PM »
I just can't let that one go. Granted Rogue Leader got cranked out in EIGHT months (check the video documentary) but they are the exception, not the rule. Other companies like Acclaim try an eight-month cycle and come up with less than perfect products. I'm pretty sure the fellows at Factor 5 had to live without sleep when making Rogue Leader.

As far as translation goes, I'd love it to have come out earlier in the summer. It would've been the game me and my friends would play until dawn. But now they're back in school leaving me a solo gamer but that's beside the point. They had to LOCALIZE (Tweaking the text for us Westerners) for all three versions, which means going back to the source code and replace the Hiragana (Japan's basic script) and Kanji (Pictographs, kind of like Egyptian Heirogylphics.) with good old English. Sometimes translations can't fit text boxes, odd bugs can surface, etc and its back to the proverbial drawing board.

As far as extras, what MORE do you want Namco to do? Namco could've rested on its laurels and gave us nothing special over the original. Instead, they racked their brains to improve on a flawless formula that got it right the first time.

While it did take a while to reach our shores, I know I'm getting the FULL experience, translated text and all. I'm getting my full fifty-worth while importers are getting 80-percent of what they paid (Getting a freeloader plus the price of the game.) Granted the 20 percent is not that crucially important, but its like chocolate cake vs chocolate cake with the frosting. Its that much sweeter.

General Chat / RE:Your most hated games?
« on: August 24, 2003, 07:07:09 PM »
Damn, sounds like we have picky players in our midst. But hey, to each his own. Now on the bashing:

Star Fox Adventures
Where do I begin? I bought this game, completely unaware of its devolopment story. Only after a week or so did I get the skinny on how this game was made. I believe Rare had just been purchased by Microsoft when I bought it, so I came in with the expecatation of Rare going out with a bang with this.

I was incorrect. It had eye-poping graphics for sure, but its gameplay didn't wow me as much. I let it slide for a while but it really hit the wall with a few situations

1) There was a portion where you had to outrun and destroy reptites(?) on speeders. You had to memorize the entire track (7 minutes worth) and if you didn't get ALL of them( 4 or so), you had to start over.

2) There was a part of the game where you had to to do a "test of strength" with a tribes champion. This test was simply how fast you can mash the A button. I tried this for WEEKS, mashing, mashing, almost bashing my controller. My thumb went stiff for a few days after this incident, and when it healed, I left Star Fox to rot. Then my best friend comes to town who possesed a turbo controller. I loaned the controller and beat that segment I was working on for weeks on end in a few seconds. I literally cried after I succeded.

3)This was the kicker which led me to resell the game at Gamestop. This portion involved in focusing on the top part of your screen, keeping a little  dot in the center while so much action was happening below the screen. It was an interesting design I'm sure, in practice was impossible for me. While an object flew by the left side, your thumb almost naturally tilted left, going off center. Same thing for the right. Now imagine that, but in mere eyeblinks, in many directions. I threw my hands in fustration and resold the game. I used to that money to Pre-Order Zelda (with the Zelda 64 bonus) and was a happy camper. (Except for Wind Wakers difficulty but that's another story.)

Generally I'm forgiving with games, but this one just threw me for a loop. But at least its now Microsoft's problem

TalkBack / RE:Games Too Complicated? Carmack Agrees.
« on: August 24, 2003, 06:00:56 PM »
I'll have to disagree with Zephry in his last remark concerning Carmack. Its not really fair to compare Miyamoto-san with Carmack; its like apples to oranges.

Miyamoto-san was one of the pioneers of Gaming itself way back when, Carmack was just a pioneer in a specific brand of gaming: FPS.

Miyamoto-san created not just friendly characters (Donkey Kong, Zelda, etc) but expanded in different Genres ( RPG, Adventure, Platforming), if you read the article Carmack is more or less stuck with FPS? Why? Here's snippet if you didn't read:

More than 5,000 made the journey to Dallas (QuakeCon) last week to mingle and play with the people who created their favorite action games. The price of having fans that devoted? The company isn't afforded the chance to branch into other genres. "Since we're a single title company...we're constrained to do something that has a high probability of success," said Carmack. "It's unlikely id will come out with something that's off the wall."

His running buddy, John Romero probably branched off because of said reason (And how many are leaving their companies to branch out on their own?). But that's another story in itself.

Simply put, who knows whats inside the head of Carmack? We only know what we see (and what sells). Since he's a fan of simple gaming, it'll be interesting to see if he puts that philosophy to use in the future.

General Gaming / RE:Official *Phantom Console* News
« on: August 18, 2003, 09:15:42 PM »
Well looks like this "HoaX" has shown its teeth. Check out the specs (Courtesy of Gamespot.com):

Custom OS running Windows XP kernel
3.0GHz processor
256MB DDR RAM
Nvidia video card
Intel motherboard
Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound
100GB+ internal storage
Onboard RF wireless modules
S-video, RCA, component video, and PAL support
10/100 baseT Ethernet
Wireless controller
Wireless keyboard and mouse
2 USB ports
4 controller ports
12' port extension cable

Optional Components:
Controllers, wireless and corded
Keyboard and mouse with charging base station
Storage expansion for additional game storage
DSL modem
Cable modem
Wireless WIFI card
Memory upgrades
Speaker sets
Flat-screen display

Now THAT'S some power. Unless they want to look REALLY dumb, they're gonna press onwards. Looks like they took a page from Nintendo's book concerning Wireless peripherals. But with all that power, must come a hefty price. And I don't mean like XboX was 400 at Launch expensive, but it might reach over a thousand dollars. Now Infinium has stated they will sell models to fit your wallet, so if you want the power, you gotta pay the piper. Not to mention that Infinium has said you can ONLY get it online (No deals with retailers therefore getting a lion's share of profit.) and that it has 250 publishers and Developers currently "Interested."

My analysis/opinion? They aren't getting off the right foot by advertising with NO original content. By not getting it in a store means you are probably limiting people from A)Seeing it in action B)Taking it home right away. It looks like they're gonna have to pull a PS1 by having almost 100 percent 3rd party support for a while, until they have enough money (and interest) to make their own studio. Tecmo seem to be power whores, will they jump from MS's boat into the Phantom Zone? (yeah yeah cheap pun) The thing here is that they aren't really aiming for a killer app a la Halo, but for more of an exclusive experience akin to XboX Live. Will that entice gamers?

As with all newcomers, I'm skeptical about how far and how long are they willing to stay. With a new crop of contenders (EGM has an article in August issue), its history repeating itself. (Think back to the 90's, CD-i, 3DO, Sega CD, 32x, Virtual Boy, etc etc.) I for one will not make that crapshoot at launch, I'll let the brave (and rich) souls test the waters.

Now to work the other angle, what is rival company NVIDIA is handling all this? Early in the year, it was rumored that their relationship with MS was soured, but it was cleared up as false. Now this.

I mentioned waaay back that it was almost like a tag team match between NVIDIA and MS VS ATI and Nintendo. Looks like ATI is playing both fields and may come out the winner! NVIDIA on the other hand gets the screw from Microsoft; that's gotta sting a little...

Unless MS gets the best of both worlds and has NVIDIA and ATI under the same roof. Highly unlikely as those two companies want to grind the other in the dirt.

Responding to Jack Lantern's critique, its good to keep other in people in check. I wrote my rant around 4 a.m, ready to sleep so some ideas may have been shortly executed. So I thank you for that. At least somebody read it!! I thought it was gonna be this big blob to some people who would just skip over it to the shorter ones.

By the time I got to the Online/Rare Arguments I was getting sleepy, and since I'm gonna make the assumption that PGC members can fill in the gaps because they're in the know, I can save my fingers. Lame excuse for sure, but that's my defense.

To go in some slight detail, the writer implies that Rare was this BIG studio they gave up when it was simply dead weight circa 2002. The Rare that made Goldeneye is not the same Rare that made later games. People looking for that "Goldeneye experience" cite TimeSplitters 2 as the next best thing. Retro Studios and Silicon Knights have stepped up to the plate in terms of quality (Sales, well...I guess people like Splinter Cell better. But there's room for improvement.)

The Online argument I stated was that if you read the recent interviews, Iwata-san and Miyamoto-san simply don't like the current format: Continually paying to play your games you've spent 50 dollars out of the box.  Nintendo is trying to perfect a formula that will make customers and publishers happy. That may take some time.

My Colaborations (Am I spelling that right?) rant was going for a more intellecutual one, not the hard earned, making dollars and cents one. Obiviously Something else attracts these 3rd parties aside from cold hard cash. Hideo Kojima could've told Nintendo to go fly a kite when they went to him about Metal Gear. Sega could have snubbed their noses at their old rival when asking them to develop F-Zero. Namco could've just said no to Starfox. Granted, Nintendo is slow on the uptake at times but not on Quality and Innovation. (Who knows, these projects may make a profit too..)

Generally speaking, I put in some arguments that went on another angle, not nessecarily opposing them. The Nintendo/Sony story on PS1 I lifted from Gamespy.com and IGN.com (Lest they are completely unreliable sources though I doubt it.) and simply go on to say that the research they did with Nintendo (And the abrupt betrayal afterwards) went on to the birth of the PS1. Sony wasn't going in totally blind, they had some experience (behind the scenes at least.)

The writer mentioned the Mini-DVD as an Achilles Heel which is why I mentioned that it's actually to their favor. Granted 1.5 Gigs seem to be insufficient, It hasn't stopped Capcom from making jaw dropping visuals in the RE Evil series, Retro from making the vast world of Metriod Prime, and making a huge over world in Legend of Zelda:The Wind Waker. Those slick visuals in Star Fox Adventures weren't too bad either. Without getting too off topic the upcoming Ninja Gaiden on XBoX was originally concieved on a Naomi Arcade board.(EDIT: Interview is found at Gamespot.com) Here's a snippet of what Team Ninja director Tomonobu Itagaki said:

GS: Was it always scheduled to be an Xbox game?

TI: Are you serious? (smile) We began development of Ninja Gaiden in 1999. At that time, we were using the Naomi arcade board in order to develop fundamental algorithms. Please don't misunderstand me; this does not mean that we were developing Ninja Gaiden for Naomi. Naomi was an extremely able "computer" and was suited to the development of algorithms that are not dependent on the specific platform. Major examples of these algorithms are important elements in action games such as the camera engine and motion engine.

To software engineers like us, both the Naomi and the Xbox are simply two examples of a computer system. Of course, this applies to the PS2 as well. Hardware engineers often tout the novelty and uniqueness of their computer architecture; we are not interested in this, and frankly, we don't care. Why? Because software engineers with a decent amount of expertise doing "ordinary work" can eliminate the differences between machines quite easily.
(It goes on to say because of XboX's raw power was the reason it was selected.)

Case in Point? Max Payne on PC? Max Payne on GCN? Possible, you just need the right (and bright) people working on it. Though as far as getting the liscence, paying the piper, yada yada, is another story.

And I'll admit I'm not unbiased, but I'm not some die-hard fanboy neither. I also have too much on my hands
That was what I was going for. Its good to have people on your toes, otherwise heads will be filled with hot air instead of knowledge.

After reading it entirely it seems that that the writer is mis-informed and seems to be selecting facts to argue his case which can easliy be countered. Oddly enough, he didn't leave an E-mail address...

For a more tasteful constructive criticsim of Nintendo, Go to Nintendojo.com either in the features or Editorials section. Strangely enough , that one is called "The Nintendo (In)Difference" but it probably pre-dates it by a few months. A rebuttal is also freatured, so you could walk away with both sides of the tale.

One of his points was during the 16-bit era involving Mortal Kombat. No doubt Nintendo was playing Censor during those days, but has long since changed their tune.

His Gameboy argument is easily shut-down by simply looking at the record: Game Gear and Lynx did have color but it was too bulky, too expensive and not enough games. The Gameboy line is still around with nary a scratch it can't lick. eventually when the technology was affordable did the Big N press on (Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color.) Now if he said something like how Nintendo cannabalized the GBC for the GBA (3 year difference), is up for debate, he simply didn't get that angle.

Sony being a newcomer? That's half true. Someone needs to inform him that Sony's PS1 was a culmination of Nintendo and Sony working together to bring a CD based-system. Again, he could've picked a valid argument that Nintendo got greedy (The argreement would have that Nintendo wouldn't get the lion's share like they were use to in the NES) and went with Philips to make the abomination that was the CD-i, lending some of Nintendo's franchises (Though Nintendo didn't develop for it.) That didn't work out well; Sony took the research it was working with Nintendo and went on their own, releasing it a couple of years later.

The Sega Saturn beat Sony to the gate in the U.S.A  but it was expanisive and the devolopers werent ready for it. Even then it was hard to hard program and didn't have enough 3rd party support (Though the Panzer Dragoon series and Nights into Dreams have nearly become legends). The writer could have mentioned the delays in releasing the Nintendo 64, but he missed that boat. Oh, and Mario 64 wipes the floor with all the Tomb Raider games on PS1 combined but that's bordering on fanyboyism...

Mini-DVD? Granted the file sizes are small but the Writer forgot the mention that its almost unhackable, Xbox and PS2 emulators are plausible, but Gamecube Emulator is virtually IMpossible. Simple case of Covering Your Ass after being ridiculously being hacked (GBA probably being the last link) since the NES. This is another argument he could've brought up but that pumpkinhead ain't feeding him the right info.

Going Online? Even Gamer Mags have it that Nintendo is denying the existance of Online play. They gotta go back to reccent interviews and get the facts straight. They will get there, and if pulled off correctly, they will get there with the last laugh. I will give him the connectivity argument; there's not much improvement in that area, but I believe Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will show the best of GCN-GBA connections.

The whole Rare story is Soooo 2002 and no need to go over it.  Just look at this years E3 for proof: Nintendo's counting that cash and making good use of it.

And what kills the writer's credibility was that whole "gotta make deals with 3rd parties" B.S He simply rolled over the fact that realizing that the "Colaborations" is almost Brainchild Heaven. Its the best minds of the business getting together and guess what? Its exclusive.

Long story short, I can probably take this guy's job, and no doubt many of you too. Now if he only left  an E-mail address... but he will get flodded by fanboys, but he might find a rebutal like this one and simply get enlightened by the very text. Oh well. Can you save them all?
