Live Arcade stuff is cheaper and better, but you pay more up front for it.  That's a good think over the long run though.  Nintendo has too much pride to release NES games at the dollar price point everyone was expecting, which means they have to scale everything based on that.  It really should be NES(/SMS? hello?) $1, TG16 $2, Gen $3, SNES $4, NG $5, N64 $6.

As for this crop of Neo Geo games, they're getting the worst out of the way first, otherwise nobody would buy them.  All of these games are terrible.  I'm a Neo Geo fighting game fan, but these are borderline unplayable.  Wait for King of Fighters 94 at the least.  Even then I'd say wait for 96 (I can't believe how much I paid for that cartridge back in the day).

Cool.  Very soon we will be running into the need for smarter channel organization (folders maybe?) and seamless SD card memory expansion.

Whether Nintendo will deliver on those needs or just say "YOU CAN DELETE AND DOWNLOAD LATER!!!" remains to be seen.

I don't mind the stylus control, other than rolling which never seems to work when I want, and seems to happen when I don't.

What's bugged me so far is that I'm supposed to make noise into the mic.  I'm sorry, this is a portable system.  I'm usually not playing it at home.  So I'm supposed to yell into a microphone in public?

Also the auto jumping doesn't seem to work on moving platforms.  Sure you can auto jump ON to the moving platform, but when you try to jump to the next platform instead of waiting for it to arrive, no, you walk right off the edge.  This sort of inconstancy should have been picked up in beta.  Why do I always find the problems my first game through and a skilled team of testers doesn't notice?

I love the exploration elements of zelda, but couldn't stand wind waker.  Someone needs to tell Nintendo sailing around on a boat isn't fun unless maybe you are actually on the boat and like sailing.  I'm already irritated that there's boat nonsense in this game, but admittedly it's less annoying than wind waker.  Plus I take the train into work every day now so I really don't have anything better to do that watch a stupid boat.

I think the control is fine, didn't take any time at all to get used to it.  I especially love the boomerang, which is awesome for shredding grass and finding money and hearts.  Another plus for the game is unlike others in the series, you don't fill up your rupies in the first 30 seconds of the game.  And *gasp* there's actually expensive things to buy with them!  Unlike wind waker.

Nintendo still hasn't released the reigns and you are hand-held through the game, but I guess getting the freedom of Zelda 1 & 2 again just won't ever happen.  It's annoying to the point that as you figure something out, the stupid fairy pipes in and explains what you have to do.

That aside, it hasn't infuriated me like wind waker did in the first few days and I'm enjoying it so far.

I'm worried that it will get worse later, but so far I agree with you.  They haven't been any real threat so far.  Just run, they're slow.

Another thing is the computer can be dead stupid.  If you die against 2 computer teams and they can't get a direct shot at eachother, you might as well quit.  They just keep skipping turns until time runs out, and then who knows.  I'm not waiting that long.

The old AI strategy when they couldn't get a shot was about what a human's is: start blasting through walls!

I always complain about games I like more than ones I don't.  It's a compliment or something.

It's the best worms in years, for certain.  It's far easier to list what's wrong with it, and just assume everything else is spot on:

They very slightly reduced the damage bazookas do.  A perfect shot with a bazooka used to do 50 damage.  This is significant because that's half your life.  Two perfect shots and your dead.  Now there's no point in getting a perfect shot, 3 perfect shots will kill a worm just as well as 3 shoddy shots.

I really, really, really miss the baseball bat.  It's a simple, effective weapon with no splash damage.  And unlike the fire punch you can aim with it.  Sometimes there's a worm just asking to be clocked over a hill to his doom.

The ability to pick which worm to use at the start of the match has been dropped.  This feature is really critical.  It can mean the difference between a close match and getting completely creamed due to a bad starting location.  There was no reason not to include this standard Worms feature.  It's been in every other version.  Cycling through all your worms also gives you a quick close up look at your situation.  Now you have to scroll around with the d-pad, or settle for the mini-map view as to who's in the most danger (not that there's much you can do about it since you can't pick your worm).

Sometimes the camera spazzes out with no explanation.  It isn't very good at following shots in the first place, but sometimes it just jumps to a corner of the map away from the action.  It is a mystery.

The water level seems too high for most of the cave maps.  There's a ton of land up at the ceiling and half the map is underwater.  Seems like a developer oversight.

Also they added these really annoying "random events", which while can be turned off, are present in most of the preset schemes (which are the ones you have to play with online).  So you have to practice with them or you won't know what is going on.  They do things like raise the water level each turn, or cause an earthquake.   Mostly they just randomly kill a bunch of guys.  They give you warning before they happen, but there's no point. Since you can't pick your worm, most of the time you can't do anything to protect the vulnerable ones.

A higher resolution screen would have made it better, but that's hardly the games fault.  The computer will be doing his amazing bad ass shots, and you'll struggle with a simple arc across the map, because you can only see a tiny bit of it.  I bet the PSP version is nice in that respect.

All that said, it's still a damn fine port of the game from worms 2, with a number of improvements, not the least of which is the ability to take the game with you.

Agreed, this is no substitute for the real deal. The Wii can certainly run SC3, and unless their doing some crazy super physics calculations or something, I don't see why 4 couldn't be ported either.

From building stores on Indian burial grounds to contaminated runoff water at building sites, Wal-Mart is a shining example of a corporation that takes great care to protect our shared environment, much like a neighbor coming into your house and taking a steamy dump on your kitchen counter.  Good choice, Nintendo!

The problem I had with the first one was there were times that I knew what the hole in the case was, but figuring out when the game would accept the evidence was basically "trial" and error.  Annoying as hell.

There should be a menu to pick what the evidence is that breaks the case and some way of inputting why, rather than going through a testimony line by line and trying to guess what the developer's rational was.

Why can't we get KoF on the DS?  Why do they insist on releasing fighting games on a portable with a broken d-pad?  It's like the N-64 days all over again.

Seconded. I have no idea why people had issues.

Because there is no way to throw the grenade with a button press, which as I recall there was a button for on the arcade.  Further more they forgot the gamecube controller had a d-pad, and the arcade did not use analog controls.  The only way to play the game properly is with an x-arcade stick set to emulate the analog stick.

Edit: with any luck they'll remember the GC control ports on KoF for the Wii...

lawl. PC gamers have had free online play for years. Hopefully the fact that neither Sony nor Nintendo are charging for their online services will bring Live closer in line to what MS should be doing when they release the next XBox.

Yeah, it's free on the PC, but it's all over the place.  I see the value in Live.  You have one big integrated online network that all the games on it support, with integrated IM and friends lists, voice chat, etc etc.  You of course get it all on windows in any assortment of programs, but it isn't all integrated into one interface and linked up with all your games.

I'm not saying I want to pay $50 a month, but it's really slick what they've put together.  The idea of playing a single player game with no plan to go online, and having my friend just jump right in and join the game out of nowhere is pretty freaking awesome.

Not too important but cool nonetheless, particularly with the announcement to expect lag across great geographical distances. Speaking of which shouldn't people in California be able to play with people in Japan easily, the divide isn't that great. For us east coasters that would be understandable, but we should be able to connect with our Euro pals well no??

Eh... I think it has more to do with the connection bandwidth between geographic regions.  I mean, they gotta go through a cable in the ocean.  My guess is there's more bandwidth between east coast and west coast US than west coast US and japan.

Yeah, there's still hope for the future.  With such a huge title like this though I had hoped we'd see some of these new services.  Metroid Prime 3's auto detect friends thing really had me thinking that's where they were going with it.

Well strictly looking at what Prime 3 already does, I don't see why they would need to charge for just looking at your friend list.

Sure thing.  Why can't we have voice chat and one universal friend list?  No they aren't 10% of xbox live.  It's the most bare-bones lazy online system they could have possibly come up with.  Great, it's free.  I'll keep that in mind while I don't use it.  Don't get me wrong, I really like Nintendo.  And I really dislike Microsoft and the 360 for a number of reasons.  But anyone who tries to act like Live isn't the gold standard in online play is delusional or ignorant of what it can do.  Yeah, it's $50 a year and all reports point to it being worth every penny.  If Nintendo came out with a $50 a year service that did everything live does no one would be complaining.  I'd settle for a $5 service with one friend list and voice chat.

Or continue to complain about it.  If Nintendo listens to the community at all, "piping down" isn't going to change anything.  And if they don't, making noise will let people know what they're in for.  I'm not going to pretend to be happy about it.

I don't expect them to build live in a day, and they don't even have to build 10% of it.  But I already have a friend list on my Wii, I already entered everyone's codes.  There's no reason not to let me see a list of my friends who have the game, and check who I want to play with.  It's just like entering friend codes except it's one click and I don't have to email everyone I know asking if they bought the game or not, write down a 16 digit number and punch it in and hope they get around to doing the same. It's an unnecessary hassle and nobody is "happy" with it.  Maybe it doesn't bother everyone, but typing in a 16 digit number is not on anyone's list of things they want to do with their time.

Or how about doing both?  Enter friend codes for the potential weirdo internet pedos and just use the system friend list for people you actually know?

There's any number of solutions.  Nintendo is rolling in cash.  They claim to want to continue to provide new things.  Everyone is screaming for decent online.  And then there's this:

Quote

Satoru Iwata:

"I believe my most important role right now is to prevent Nintendo from being in a company where people say, 'Oh, Nintendo is arrogant', 'Nintendo has let its guard down', or 'Nintendo has lost its challenging spirit'. We want to avoid all of the pitfalls that can come from losing one's momentum."

"...we have no intention of abandoning our core players and the people who have been Nintendo fans over the course of our history... we really believe that part of our mission is to make traditional games for our traditional audience."

I'd like to read this with some degree of hope for a decent online setup in the future, among other things.  Anything less would be letting their guard down, backing away from a challenge and losing momentum.  I have a lot of reasons why I don't want a 360, but HD graphics and kick ass online are extremely tempting.

Still Nintendo could make even more money if they had TWO Virtual Consoles, one for the consoles and one for the portables.  It's total rip-off bullsh!t BUT I think the endless GBA ports (as well as the DS launching with a port as the only first party game and selling regardless) shows that people will gladly (by that I mean stupidly) buy a game they already own again just to play it on a portable.  After all many games that appeared on the GBA, that are thus playable on the DS, are available on the VC.  Nintendo doesn't seem worried that Super Mario Bros on the VC is going to hurt GBA Super Mario Bros sales or vice versa.

And I've never met anyone until now that found playing Gameboy games on a TV a weak experience.  Why would anyone think that?  No rinky dink screen, no battery concerns, no comfort problems.  Seems like the luxurious way to play Gameboy games.

"More like Master System."

The Genesis is actually backwards compatible with the SMS.  The adapter was really just a cartridge slot.  All the actual hardware was in the Genesis itself so it probably is not very hard at all for them to release SMS games.

I think it's a weak experience.  4 shades of gray on a square pixelated screen with beep boop sound playing a watered down NES game is pretty weak IMO.  Put it on a portable and it's not as bad.  Just my opinion of course, but then there's no gameboy games on VC, so someone else out there thinks it isn't a great idea either.  If you're referring to GBA games, the GBA line isn't quite discontinued yet.  They won't be putting Gamecube games on VC any time soon either.  I think the idea is to sell classic games you can't get any more.  GBA will be around for a while, even after they stop manufacturing them, and you can still play them on the DS.

Regardless of what (if anything) they plan to do with portable VC, I would hope that they only charge you once for the game. They could work something where you can "check out" the game from your Wii to one portable system at a time or some DRM goofery like that.  Which of course introduces headaches like, "my portable system broke/got stolen, and now my game is checked out forever."  But it's either that or buy another copy for the portable, so I'll hope for the former along with some lenient support folks who can make it all better pretty quickly.

As for the master system, as I understand it, the power base converter just used the Genesis's sound chip (a z-80) as the main cpu (which was the SMS cpu), along with the controller inputs, power and video out.  So I think there was some extra stuff going on there besides a cartridge adapter.  I'm curious if the PBC had it's own sound chip, as the SMS used a Yamaha YM2413 FM chip for sound, and I'm not sure the Genesis had one on board.  The SMS hardware was however identical to the Game Gear (with a slightly higher resolution on the SMS).  But yeah, there's no reason for them not to release SMS games regardless.
