I think they’re all going to be third party, but if a Nintendo rep is in there, I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Fire Emblem or Pokemon.

Always Be My Maybe

Recommendation: DON’T WATCH THE TRAILER OR LOOK UP THE CAST LIST

Aside from a mostly non-white cast, this is about as generic as a romantic comedy can get. Ali Wong and Randall Park play the leads, Ali and Marcus, and are both good. They’re credited as writers in the movie. It has some funny lines and one really good part in the middle with a surprise that is largely spoiled in the trailer because Netflix doesn’t know how to cut a fucking trailer. That part steals its main schtick from Nahnatchka Khan‘s other work which I won’t spoil. While the movie can be funny at times, it felt like it was written with a checklist of rom-com tropes.

Narratively, it’s kind of a mess too. The plot moves really fast. There’s a part where Marcus messes up his band’s audition then like two minutes later, the venue gives them another audition which goes well. What the F was the point of that then? The main conflict between Ali and Marcus at the movie’s climax is resolved in maybe 10 minutes and never felt earned or really, even that big of a deal.

Basically, the entire reason I even wrote all this is because I’d still get about an hour in for that one scene.

TalkBack / Re: Super Crush KO's E3 2019 Trailer Is Beautiful, Magical

The title intrigued me so I watched the trailer. Not bad! The graphics remind me of old Newgrounds animations from like 2004 so I have a strange feeling of nostalgia for a new IP. Keeping this on the radar.

That didn’t go according to plan.

but who knows, maybe it will differentiate itself somehow.
I’ve only completed the first one, and if that’s any indication, the only differences are over-designed, try-hard characters and an equally try-hard story.

The gameplay was fine; everything surrounding it was distracting to the point where it was difficult to take seriously. I’ve never really played the Diablo series so I don’t know how that compares. Blizzard makes some pretty cutscenes though.

Klay Thompson will apparently play in Game 4 so I’m hoping for an even series.

Warriors' Looney could still return in NBA Finals

I like both teams. I understand injuries happen, but I wanted to see a team take down the Warriors with a mostly full roster. Weirdly, the Warriors are the underdogs now so I'm leaning on rooting for them even though I originally wanted them to lose this year, just not like this. It's a confusing time.

Nintendo already released a fourth Pikmin game.

No need to thank me. My reward is helping others.

Metroid 5... I appreciate Luigi Dude’s optimism. Unfortunately... YOU GET NOTHING! YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY, SIR!
I’d really like to see two or more Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character announcements, but I think we only get one.
This is probably your wildest prediction.
I considered not posting that one. I tried to take a measured approach this year.

Predictions:

1. Metroid: Samus Returns Plus+ trailer and 2019 release date
2. Donkey Kong: Kremling Krew Katastrophe trailer
3. Bayonetta 3: Nintendo’s Witch trailer
4. A very special appearance by Reggie Fils-Aime to announce the Mother 3 source code has been destroyed
5. S-Zero, an F-Zero spin-off/Star Fox crossover featuring chibi characters and a maximum speed for 55 MPH. Slow and steady wins the race!

I’d really like to see two or more Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character announcements, but I think we only get one.

Mini add-ons for Sega CD and 32X. Non-functional, just for decoration.

We have ESPN on muted in the break room at work so I only caught a brief glimpse of the TV graphic. Klay Thompson is apparently playing in Game 3. I tried to verify this by googling “Klay Thompson” and the fourth suggestion on The Google is “Klay Thompson girlfriend” so that’s a thing I know now. (I wasn’t able to verify that he’s definitely playing, just that he can’t see himself not playing).

Unless Kevin Durant can play in Game 4, this series is the Raptors to win.

1263
While I like the Raptors, I want the Warriors to win this series if only because this is my favorite post in this thread:
Congrats to Toronto. Even without LeBron in your conference, you still find ways to own yourselves.

There’s something off about the Oracle games. They feel like fan games even though they were developed by Capcom. I remember liking Ages more. Veran was a better villain which is tossed right the F out the window because surprise, guess who the final boss is when you link the games?

1265
No one wearing a Raptors uniform even considered a token attempt at closing out on Iguodala. He hesitated to shoot almost as if he was surprised he was so wide open for as long as he was.

1266
That’s definitely a concern, and unfortunately, there’s no perfect solution either. These days, data on physical versions are part of a game due to patches and/or whole sections of a game being download only. Were DS games patched? I don’t think they were, and if not, that may be the last major hardware release in which we consistently got an entire game on physical media. On top of that, optical discs rot. Digital is weirdly the best way to preserve these games though not without caveats. If the server shuts down or a publisher pulls the game, better hope your download is safe.

That said, I’ve been considering going all digital next generation now that microSD capacity finally reached 1 TB. I can probably get by on 1 TB, definitely 2 TB. Physical versions don’t have the benefit they used to. It really hit home when the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night brand manager announced to Kickstarter backers that stretch goal content would be delivered as free updates as they’re finished similarly to Shovel Knight. A good portion of the game’s content won’t even be on the Switch game card once all is said and done. I’m at the point where I’m wondering why I’m still collecting these things. I don’t even like bringing out my old consoles. I bought Nintendo’s Classic Edition consoles partially because I can’t be bothered with composite cables.

I was all excited for basketball tonight then I looked it up, and the game is tomorrow. Well, there go my Saturday night plans.

TalkBack / Re: Full Lineup Revealed For Upcoming Contra Collection
« on: May 30, 2019, 11:31:26 PM »
However, it's a shame that the excellent Contra 4 release from DS and Contra Rebirth release from WiiWare are MIA. Both seem like underappreciated (or at least underplayed) games from this excellent series.
Including Contra Rebirth would make this an instant buy for me since I missed the boat WiiWare. As of now, I’m not terribly interested in this compilation.
It should also be worth noting the Japanese version of Contra 3 and Hard Corps is suppose to be patched later after game release, which is kind of a big deal as well.
I’m not understanding the whole patch-the-Japanese-version-in-later dealie. It’s nice and all because Konami didn’t have to do anything. At the same time, these games have been out for 37 years. Isn’t it more work to patch old ROMs in later than include everything from the start? What is life? Am I having a stroke?

DeMarcus Cousins is active for Game 1

There’s a part of me that wants Cousins to be so good in this series that he (miraculously) wins Finals MVP. I just think it’d be funny if Steph Curry doesn’t win it again.

General Gaming / Re: So nobody likes GameStop?
« on: May 27, 2019, 09:28:47 AM »
I sometimes go into GameStop for the hell of it. Occasionally, it’ll have a decent hardware trade offer which helps when upgrading. Maybe I shouldn’t look for places that will enable this behavior? As far as games, I’ve been pretty good about only buying games I intend to keep. The exception was Fire Emblem Warriors, and I didn’t buy that for myself.

GameStop dug its own grave by just being so shiesty to customers and employees. Who doesn’t have their own personal GameStop horror story? It was only a matter of time before that caught up to the company. As the industry started moving toward digital downloads, GameStop couldn’t even fall back on its goodwill or superior customer experience because it had neither. I was in a GameStop several years ago and I witnessed a district manager really give it to the employees. I’ve worked in customer service before so personally, that’s a huge turnoff. The district manager then harassed me with overbearing customer service while I was browsing the store (I was trying to find some Wii games I missed out on like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories). Leave me alone, bro. NO ONE FUCKING LIKES THAT.

I’ve had a few great experiences with GameStop employees though those always felt in spite of GameStop, not because of it. They were genuinely good customer service people, and I hope they find/found better employers that truly appreciate what they bring to the table. When people don’t have to go to your store anymore for your primary product, how do you get people in the door? It has to be the customer experience. Best Buy figure that out, but it typically had good customer service before it restructured. It hired a CEO from a hospitality and travel company, downsized and focused on its strongest market (North America) then really leaned into its customer service. GameStop, on the other hand, now sells a bunch of fucking knick-knacks that take up a large portion of its floorspace. Not going to get it done, guys.

I couldn’t get through Chrono Cross. I merely rented it at the tail end of the PlayStation’s life cycle (pretty much when my mommy bought me one for Christmas) so maybe I didn’t give it a fair chance. I’d love to see a de-make of Chrono Cross in the Octopath Traveler style with Akira Toriyama character redesigns and half the characters that have next to nothing to do with the main plot relegated to NPCs. Make it a more straightforward game that actually looks like a follow up to Chrono Trigger. It’ll never happen but a girl can dream.

Is Star Trek: Picard supposed to be a 10-episode limited series? Or is this intended to be the first season should it be popular enough?

Gotta say, props to the Raptors for finally making it to the end after so many years of failure.
Love that backhanded compliment.

Kevin Durant named to All-NBA Second Team and Klay Thompson didn’t make any All-NBA teams. Ew.
