TalkBack / Luigi-Themed DLC Adds Over 80 Stages to New Super Mario Bros. U
« on: February 14, 2013, 10:28:43 AM »

A whole new platforming adventure starring the younger plumber himself.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33299

New Super Luigi U, a pack of DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U containing more than 80 brand new levels, was announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation.

By selecting this add-on content at the main menu, every stage on the existing world map will be swapped out with different courses, with Luigi as the playable character instead of Mario. Pricing details for the DLC are currently unknown.

This announcement comes as part of Nintendo's 'Year of Luigi' campaign, which also showcased Luigi's Mansion 2 and the recently revealed Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for 3DS.

New Super Luigi U will be released within this calendar year.

A game with such a weird name could only come from Japan, right? Think again!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33292

Scram Kitty And His Buddy On Rails has been unveiled as an exclusive title for the Wii U eShop by Welsh development house Dakko Dakko.

The game is described as a 2D side-scrolling shooter with interaction between the Wii U GamePad and the TV screen. On the GamePad, the player takes control of the "buddy on rails" through spaceship-based levels, moving along networks of grind rails and gunning down enemies in gameplay that has drawn comparisons to Smash TV and Jet Set Radio.

In order to progress, the player must simultaneously interact with the titular Scram Kitty, who exists only on the TV, by transferring items between the two characters. Details on this aspect of the game are sparse, but the developer confirms that players who complete certain actions or challenges will be able to send assist items to their friends via Miiverse.

Dakko Dakko previously developed similarly named oddities The 2D Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character and Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims for the PlayStation Minis service, while the studio's founder, Rhodri Broadbent, previously worked at Q-Games on Star Fox Command for the Nintendo DS.

During an interview with Eurogamer, Broadbent revealed that Scram Kitty, which was originally conceived as a 3DS game, became a Wii U exclusive because of the growing potential he saw in the platform.

"There's this peculiar unexplored marriage of a screen in your hands and this powerful HD machine - and I thought that's amazing, and it needs to be explored," he said.

"I think there's potential to have a hit on Wii U in its first 18 months. To get a game out and have it when the system's starting to ramp up with the Miiverse, to be involved in that will be good for us from a business point of view."

Scram Kitty And His Buddy On Rails is tentatively pegged for release later in 2013.

TalkBack / Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Online Play is Region-Locked
« on: February 08, 2013, 03:52:46 PM »

You'll need some local friends if you to go hunting over the internet.

Online multiplayer in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be region-locked, according to series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto.

In an interview with Gamereactor, translated via Siliconera, Tsujimoto confirmed that the server infrastructure would prevent North American players from hunting online with European or Japanese players on both Wii U and 3DS, and vice versa.

This is not the first time the franchise has had region-locked multiplayer. The original Monster Hunter Tri for Wii also only allowed players to form hunting parties with others in the same region.

TalkBack / Re: Skylanders: Swap Force Preview

Good for the kids and the crazies with too much disposable income, but there's still nothing there to justify the investment for me.

This time, it's all about 'swapability'... if that even is a word.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33215

Skylanders SWAP Force, the latest instalment in Activision's "toys to life" franchise, has been confirmed for release on Wii U, 3DS and Wii later this year.

The signature feature for this game is the addition of 16 new SWAP Force Skylanders. Each of these figurines can split into two halves, and one half of any one toy can be attached to another half of any other toy in the SWAP Force line. These hybrid creations will then appear in-game when placed on the Portal of Power. All in all, around 250 unique combinations are possible if the player owns all 16 SWAP Force figurines.

On top of this, 40 regular Skylanders will be made available for the game. 16 of them are completely new characters, eight are new LightCore figures and the remaining 16 are remastered versions of characters from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants. All of the figures from the previous two games shall, of course, be compatible with the new game.

Gameplay-wise, the only details given so far about SWAP Force is that it will take place on Cloudbreak Islands and for the first time in a home console Skylanders game, characters will have the ability to jump, creating the potential for platforming levels.

Vicarious Visions is overseeing development on Wii U, whilst the 3DS version is being handled by n-Space. Spiderman stalwart Beenox, meanwhile, is developing the Wii version.

Specific release information has not yet been revealed, but Activision did confirm that Skylanders SWAP Force will make its first appearance at Toy Fair 2013 in New York City this month.

TalkBack / Full Mojo Rampage from NyxQuest Developers Might Come to Wii U
« on: February 04, 2013, 02:35:56 AM »

"If it makes sense, we will port it to Wii U in the future."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33200

Full Mojo Rampage, the newly-announced adventure title developed by Over the Top Games, may be released on Wii U in the future.

The studio, which previously took charge of WiiWare platformer NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits, revealed on their official blog that the game was currently only in development for PC, but in the right set of circumstances, it is possible that they could bring it to home consoles, including Nintendo's HD system.

Full Mojo Rampage is described as a 3D isometric rogue-like game in which the player, controlling a Voodoo keeper, uses various powers and rites to explore a series of procedurally-generated dungeons. Players can collect voodoo dolls and mojo artefacts in order to strengthen their character, or plead at shrines to the nefarious voodoo gods for even greater powers. The game also includes both competitive and co-operative multiplayer modes.

TalkBack / Re: 3 Million Wii U, 12.7 Million 3DS Systems Sold in 2012
« on: January 31, 2013, 04:42:12 PM »
@ Ian Sane:

Of course it wouldn't, but it would cost significant additional resources to make such a game, and that's resources that they would rather spend on experimental projects elsewhere, like developing unique GamePad concepts for Nintendo Land. With a company like Nintendo, who puts a lot of cash into R&D, brainstorming and creating hardware and software ideas, many of which never see the light of day, it's practical in some cases to build upon an established engine and established gameplay elements, such as with their new 2D Mario game.

I'm not defending this practice, which is obviously business-orientated more than anything, but when they've got the really creative Mario projects like Galaxy and 3D Land going along concurrently with the NSMB series, I'm okay with the latter playing it safe. The 'comfort food' analogy is a good one.

TalkBack / 3 Million Wii U, 12.7 Million 3DS Systems Sold in 2012
« on: January 30, 2013, 05:28:29 PM »

Nintendo Land is the biggest selling Wii U game, whilst New Super Mario Bros. 2 takes the 3DS sales top spot.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33178

Nintendo sold 12.71 million 3DS systems and 3.06 million Wii U consoles in 2012, according to the hardware giant's latest financial highlights.

Out of the 3DS units sold last year, the 3DS XL accounted for 7.05 million of them, bringing the total lifetime-to-date sales of the handheld to 29.84 million.

On the software front, New Super Mario Bros. 2 achieved the highest sales numbers of the year with 5.96 million copies sold. The currently Japan-only Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which is due for release in the West later this year, took second place, pushing 2.73 million copies.

The Wii U sales data did not specify what proportion of sales were taken by the Basic and Premium console bundles respectively. However, software sales were pegged at 11.69 million units, which indicates an attach rate of approximately 3.82 games per system.

Nintendo Land, the pack-in title with the Premium bundle, was the top-selling Wii U game of the year, with 2.33 million copies, followed closely by New Super Mario Bros. U at 2.01 million copies.

As for the previous generation of hardware, the DS family of systems sold just 2.15 million units in 2012, but new release Pokémon Black and White 2 drove 7.63 million copies, making it Nintendo's biggest selling game of the entire year across all platforms. The Wii, meanwhile, sold 3.53 million units.

Net profit is projected despite the slashed sales projections and expected loss in operating income.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33179

Nintendo has reduced its forecast of global Wii U and 3DS hardware and software sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, but still expects to post an annual net profit.

The company now envisages selling 4 million units worldwide in Wii U consoles, down from the previous estimation of 5.5 million units, while software projections have been modified from 24 million to 16 million units.

It also expects to sell 15 million 3DS systems, which is less than the earlier figure of 17.5 million, as well as 50 million units in software.

This revised sales forecast, down overall by 17.3% from the last financial report, has led to an anticipated operating loss of 20 billion yen. However, in spite of this, Nintendo has increased its net profit expectations from 6 billion yen to 14 billion yen, attributing this to fluctuations in the value of the yen against the US dollar and the euro.

Will there be eggs? That's my question. How close to previous Yoshi games will it be? Tezuka's involvement suggests it could be closer than indicated by the first footage, which did indeed look a lot like Kirby's Epic Yarn, but from a 2.5D perspective.

TalkBack / Re: Two Zelda Titles Are Coming to Wii U
« on: January 23, 2013, 02:17:11 PM »
Day one for Wind Waker HD. Not just because those visuals are unreal, but I would also love to know what aspects of the gameplay are getting "tuned up." It's an opportunity for Nintendo to take another look at some parts of the game that perhaps got less attention than they need the first time around e.g. the Triforce Hunt, which could become a good sequence if streamlined and tweaked a little in certain areas.

In terms of the new Zelda game, they have to find a very delicate balance - by all means mess with the conventions, but they risk alienating either camp if they go too far in either direction. If they're considering removing the linear order of dungeon completion, that could mean less emphasis on item-based puzzles, a potentially interesting change.

Close-up photography and weight loss discussions... the future of Miiverse has arrived.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33101

New Miiverse interactions for upcoming first-party Wii U titles Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U were outlined in today's Nintendo Direct presentation.

In Pikmin 3, players have the option of using the Wii U GamePad as a camera and will be able to take close-up screenshots of gameplay from the perspective of individual Pikmin characters. The pictures can then be uploaded directly to the Pikmin 3 Miiverse community.

As for Wii Fit U, players will be able to create private user communities in the game's Miiverse. Each of these communities has a unique ID code which, when entered within Wii Fit U, will allow players to access them and enter discussions with fellow members.

Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U are both scheduled for release some time during Q2 of 2013.

The first home console Yoshi game in 16 years is in a world of textiles.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33091

A new 2D Yoshi platformer from Good-Feel, the studio behind Wario Land: Shake It and Kirby's Epic Yarn, was announced for Wii U at the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation.

This new game, referred to in press material as "Yarn Yoshi," is based around an arts and crafts aesthetic similar to the Nintendo 64 title Yoshi's Story, the last home console title to star the iconic green dinosaur. Stage environments consist of various textiles, while Yoshi and enemies, such as the Shy Guys, are made of yarn.

It has also been confirmed that Takashi Tezuka, who directed both Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, is heavily involved in the game's development as a supervisor.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will launch simultaneously on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U on March 22, 2013, in Europe, both at retail and as an eShop digital download.

A free trial version will be available more than a month earlier on February 21 from the eShop of both systems. This demo will include a Beginner-level mission to take down the Lagombi and an Advanced-level quest against the underwater Plesioth, along with 12 different weapons to choose from.

The latest instalment in Capcom franchise, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an enhanced remake of Wii release Monster Hunter Tri, which originally saw release in 2010. It features cross-platform multiplayer between the 3DS and Wii U versions, and enables players to transfer their save data from one system to another.

Rayman Legends and Aliens: Colonial Marines are also due before the end of March.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33027

Nintendo of America unveiled their release schedule for Q1 2013, confirming release dates for Lego City Undercover, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and numerous other titles

Lego City Undercover is touted as the flagship release, arriving in stores on March 18. As hero cop Chase McCain, players explore the vast open world of Lego City, performing parkour-style platforming, apprehending criminals and commandeering over 100 vehicles.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate then launches a day later, on March 19. As an updated HD remake of 2010's Monster Hunter Tri, Ultimate introduces several new monsters and gameplay enhancements, and allows for interactions with the 3DS version, which is out on the same day.

Other titles pegged for a March release include  Need for Speed: Most Wanted, also out March 19, and The Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition, both of which came out for rival platforms last year. In addition, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will see release on March 26, while fellow first-person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines is still scheduled for an unknown Q1 date.

Before all that, the previously delayed Rayman Legends has finally been confirmed for release on February 26. A three-level demo is already available to download from the Wii U eShop.

On the eShop digital software front, Double Fine's new adventure title The Cave is set to arrive very soon on January 22, followed two weeks later by Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 on February 7. Toki Tori 2, Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2 and Zen Pinball 2 are all also lined up for release in Q1.

TalkBack / Lego Legends of Chima Gets Tie-In on DS and 3DS
« on: January 02, 2013, 08:25:57 PM »

Surprise! It's another new Lego game!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32825

Legends of Chima, the recently announced line of Lego products, is receiving a video game adaptation. Titled Laval's Journey, the game is set to release later this year on Nintendo DS and 3DS.

The latest Lego title from series stalwarts TT Games, Laval's Journey expands upon the Legend of Chima universe, a mythical world where tribes of anthropomorphic animals battle for control over a precious natural resource known as the Chi.

According to a press release from Warner Brothers, the game follows the adventure of Laval, the warrior leader of the Lion tribe, and his allies after they are "called upon to fight for justice." Little else is known about it, though players will apparently be able to earn points within the game that can be redeemed to unlock content in Lego Legends of Chima Online, the accompanying online RPG playable for free on the Legends of Chima website.

Lego Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey is the second game in the Lego franchise announced for release this year, following the delay of Lego City Undercover. It is currently expected to launch on 3DS in summer 2013, and then soon after on DS in fall 2013.

TalkBack / Re: Pikmin 3 Draws Influence From First Pikmin, More Stressful
« on: January 02, 2013, 12:29:24 PM »
I'd say tension is a better descriptor to apply to the first Pikmin than 'stressful.' I don't really associate stress with particularly positive emotions, but I really liked Pikmin. It's tense, having to be quick and efficient under that time limit, but I wouldn't call it stressful.

The one sticking point about such a time limit is that there's a very definite end to the game. Whether or not you accomplished the objective in Pikmin 1 after 30 days, the game is over after that point. And it is certainly completable well before the 30 day limit - I've heard of people finishing it in 9 days. In real-time, that's about 2 and a half hours, give or take, but even if you take all 30 days, that's still only around 7 hours. Now, a game being short is not necessarily a knock against it if it's a dense, full experience in that time. But I'd hope to be playing Pikmin 3 for at least as long as I did Pikmin 2, which, whatever merits or demerits you label that game with, was more content-rich than its predecessor.

It's an interesting approach for sure. I am amused by the use of the word 'persuade' in that quote. As if to say "I'm Shigeru Miyamoto, I say this is what's happening and if you don't like it, tough luck!"

TalkBack / Swords & Soldiers 3D Heading to 3DS eShop in 2013
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:43:44 PM »

Years after its WiiWare release, the 2D strategy title arrives on 3DS next Spring.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32891

Quirky real-time strategy game Swords & Soldiers 3D is coming to the Nintendo 3DS eShop some time in Spring 2013.

Swords & Soldiers, which pits Aztecs, Vikings and the Chinese Empire against each other in cartoon-styled 2D battles, was first released as a WiiWare download in early 2009. Developed by the original creators of de Blob, Ronimo Games, the title featured three separate campaigns, a smattering of special challenge levels and local multiplayer.

The eShop version is being handled by prolific DSiWare developer Circle Entertainment.

In an interview with Siliconera, the Circle CEO, Chris Chau, stated that the studio was also in discussions with Ronimo over the possibility of offering free downloadable content and a demo for the game, although nothing is confirmed at this point.
