TalkBack / Several Online Wii Channels Shutting Down in June
« on: April 12, 2013, 10:35:12 AM »

After six and a half years, news, weather, contests, and opinion polls will be no more.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33834

Five channels and a number of online features on the Wii will be discontinued in June, Nintendo announced today.

The Nintendo Channel, Forecast Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, and Check Mii Out Channel (known as the Mii Contest Channel in Europe) are all to be taken offline on this date, and will be inaccessible if a user tries to access them from the Wii menu.

Certain data exchange features will also be disabled, including transferring Mii characters and sending mail over the Wii Message Board. With the shutdown of WiiConnect24, online functionality in certain games may be affected as well.

These channels will be taken down on June 28 in Japan, Europe, and Australia. An exact date for North America has not been confirmed.

Other online channels, namely the Wii Shop Channel, Netflix, and for UK consoles, LOVEFiLM and the BBC iPlayer, will all remain available.

TalkBack / Re: Splinter Cell Blacklist Sneaks onto Wii U This August
« on: April 10, 2013, 09:56:03 AM »
I would just like to say how much I've come to hate it when news headlines anthropomorphize video games. Splinter Call does not sneak on to Wii U, Mario 3D Kart did not race on to store shelves, and Guitar Hero did not die of an overdose. This needs to stop people!

This is normally a product of being bored of using the words 'announced' or 'confirmed', which we have to say a lot because things are being announced and confirmed all the time.

TalkBack / Splinter Cell Blacklist Sneaks onto Wii U This August
« on: April 10, 2013, 09:15:41 AM »

Sam Fisher stealthily returns to Nintendo consoles later this year.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33795

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist has been officially confirmed for Wii U, to be released in late August of this year.

Serving as the sixth main instalment in Ubisoft's stealth action series, Blacklist sends protagonist Sam Fisher, now the commander of new intelligence task force Fourth Echelon, on a worldwide hunt for a terrorist group that has outlined a "blacklist" of major terror attacks on the United States.

The Wii U version contains a number of unique features, utilising the GamePad to switch between and control Fisher's broad arsenal of weaponry and gadgets. For example, when using a Snake Camera to peer under doors, the camera footage will appear on the controller's screen.

Splinter Cell Blacklist is out on August 20 in North America and August 23 in Europe.

Glad to see that Armature finally got their break. It sounds like they've been through some tough times since separating from Retro Studios.

Is Pirates that Shield Pose thing that was shown at the Wii U unveil?

Yes. Or at least, Shield Pose formed the basis for Pirates - watch any video of the latter, and the connection will become extremely clear.

In contrast to many, I think Mega Man 5 is the best of the NES bunch, and I'm perplexed as to why people still go bananas for Mega Man 2. I'd love to have a proper debate over the merits and minutia of the first six Mega Man games some day.

133
This reminds me of the Super Paper Mario debacle, where the European release, several months after the other regions, somehow managed to pick up crippling bugs that weren't in the other versions of the game in the process of being localised.

Hopefully, the patch comes along soon - I feel sorry for the people who put down £20-30 on this game last week, only to have their progress halted by such a ridiculous glitch.

134

The developer has confirmed several problems and is working on a patch.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33732

The European version of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked is said to contain a number of serious game-breaking bugs.

The problems were confirmed by developer Ghostlight on their official blog, after several reports from players who had encountered these bugs cropped up following the game's European launch on March 29. According to the studio, the game will crash if the player summons a demon during battle or if certain events occur in the game's Auction House, both of which could potentially prevent the completion of the game.

Ghostlight later stated that they had contacted Nintendo and the game's original publisher, Atlus, and that they were working hard to fix these issues. The team is hoping that a patch will arrive in the near future, although no definite date has been provided at this time.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked is a 3DS port of a Nintendo DS RPG first released in 2009. The European release, which comes nearly two years after the Japanese and North American launches, was the first time Devil Survivor had been released in any incarnation in the region.

TalkBack / Intelligent Systems Eager to Make More Advance Wars
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:40:41 AM »

The Fire Emblem house discusses the future of their other strategy series.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33733

Intelligent Systems, the makers of the recent 3DS hit Fire Emblem Awakening, say that they would love to develop another title in the Advance Wars franchise.

In an interview with localisation firm 8-4 Ltd., Fire Emblem Awakening project manager Masahiro Higuchi remained open to the possibility of another Wars game in the future.

"Whether it's Fire Emblem or the Advance Wars, we never want to put an end to any series we're involved with," said Higuchi.

"We always want to make games that provide a lot of fun to gamers, so if we have the chance, we'd certainly like to make another [Advance Wars] title."

To date, four Advance Wars games have been released in the West, though the franchise has a much longer lineage in Japan, where it is called Famicom Wars. The last game in the series was the Western-only Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, known elsewhere as Dark Conflict.

More missions, more characters, more Fire Emblem. Are you in?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33700

Another two sets of downloadable content for Fire Emblem Awakening have been made available in North America.

"Rogues and Redeemers 1" is the first in a trilogy of DLC packs starring classic characters from the entire history of the Fire Emblem franchise. In this high-level map, the game's protagonist, Chrom, goes into battle alongside 10 series veterans, including Ephraim, a major character from GBA title The Sacred Stones.

Players who finish the map successfully will be rewarded with Ephraim as a playable Level 20 Great Knight. "Rogues and Redeemers 1" can be purchased alone for $3 or as part of the full "Rogues and Redeemers" set for $6.50. The latter option will provide access to the other two missions as they are released.

The other new piece of content, "Ghost of a Blade", can be downloaded free of charge. On this map, Chrom and his army must fight to restore peace to an ancient tomb that has been overrun by the evil Risen.

Fire Emblem: Awakening is available both at retail and digitally via the eShop in Japan and the US. The game is due to release in Europe on April 19, along with a special edition 3DS XL system bundle.

TalkBack / Batman Arkham Origins to be Released Later This Year?
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:36:16 AM »

Could the Dark Knight's next escapade involve other members of the Justice League?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/33693

Batman Arkham Origins is a Silver Age-inspired prequel and could be revealed at this year's E3, a recent report suggests.

Unnamed industry sources purportedly told French outlet Gameblog that the third instalment in the popular Arkham series, once again in development at Rocksteady Studios, will take place before the events of the previous two games in a story linked to the Batman comics of the 1950s and '60s. In addition, fellow Justice League of America members Superman and Green Lantern are said to be involved in the game.

The source also claims that the game will be released in Q3 2013. Although none of these game details have been confirmed, publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment did state in a recent investor's briefing that a new Batman Arkham title would be out before the end of the year.

Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, the previous entry in the franchise, was released at the launch of the Wii U in November 2012.

Vigil's last game will no longer be sold digitally at the end of the month.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33680

Action-adventure game Darksiders II will be taken down from the Wii U eShop in Europe on March 31, 2013, according to The Nintendo Channel.

European users who have already bought the title digitally will still be able to re-download it from the eShop, but the game cannot be purchased after this date. Darksiders II has been on sale since launching alongside the system on November 30, and the reasons for its upcoming removal from the store are currently unknown.

This news follows the closure of the developer, Vigil Games, in January, which occurred after owner and publisher THQ filed for bankruptcy and auctioned off its various assets and subsidiaries. Neither Vigil nor the Darksiders franchise were sold during the initial auction, and as of the time of writing, THQ is still seeking a buyer for the Darksiders property.

TalkBack / Re: Game & Wario Miiversketch Mode Revealed
« on: March 28, 2013, 06:09:45 AM »
Miiversketch - because combining only two words together just isn't enough.

Sounds moderately interesting, like a lot of things in this game. But will Game & Wario be able supplant Nintendo Land as the Wii U party game of choice? My gut instinct says no, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the review coverage out of Japan now that the game has been released over there.

For reference, the first Luigi's Mansion on GameCube supposedly sold somewhere in the region 190,000 copies in its first week of release in Japan - and that was at the launch of the system, let's not forget.

Good for you, Dark Moon. I'm hoping my order arrives tomorrow for the European launch.

It turns out that being Vice President of the World has a few interesting perks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33656

Citizens of Earth, a role-playing game said to be inspired by seminal Nintendo title Earthbound, has been announced for the Wii U eShop early next year.

Developed by Canadian outfit Eden Industries, Citizens of Earth stars the Vice President of the World, who returns to his rural home town following a successful election, only to find that some very strange events have started to occur. It is up to the player, as the VP, to recruit locals in order to fight enemies, improve the town and investigate these bizarre goings-on.

Over the course of the game, players can recruit more than 50 characters, each one possessing their own battle abilities and serving a special function within the world. As each character is used more and more in battle, they become more proficient at their town job as well.

Examples include the Moonbucks Barista, who attacks foes with scalding coffee and sells booster items, the Baker, who heals allies with cakes and sells health items, and the Mascot, whose cheers increase the effectiveness of other townspeople both in and outside of fights.

The game will also include competitive online multiplayer, in which two players pit their respective parties of townspeople against each other in battle.

Citizens of Earth is currently set to release on the Wii U eShop in March 2014.

The 1.2 patch will provide fixes for several game-breaking bugs.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33654

A patch for Wii U launch title ZombiU has gone live in North America, and is expected to soon be available worldwide, Ubisoft has confirmed.

The 1.2.0 software update, which requires just 18MB of storage space to download, fixes a number of bugs that prevented progress or caused the game to crash, as well as various other glitches.

According to patch notes issued by a Ubisoft representative, this update will address the following:

* On Mission 12, in the Nursery MAP, the interaction with the door in the basement of nursery was missing at rebirth if specific steps were followed.

* On Mission 13, in the Gas Station MAP, a Mission object that is mandatory to complete the objective was missing if specific steps were followed.

* On Mission 14, in the Circus MAP, if the player died right after recovering his Backpack, and rebooted the Wii U console, the objective was not updated.

* On Mission 15, in the Bunker MAP, the Panacea disappeared after the Player died while downloading it. However, the objective remained the same (download Panacea).

* On Mission 10, in the Tower MAP, the Objective "Secure landing site" was not validated if specific steps were followed.

* On Mission 15, in the Bunker MAP, if specific steps were followed, the Player might get stuck in the Bunker after he took Doctor's eye / Panacea because a Ladder disappeared.

* On Mission 16, in the MAP Safe House, the iron curtain in the Safe House lacked of collision during Mission 16. This Bug could lead to a scoring exploit on leaderboards.

* In the Safe House MAP, the Player saw a placeholder text when he dragged & dropped an item from the Blue Box to his holsters following certain steps.

* On Mission 12 or 15, in the Nursery MAP, the game crashed if the Player burned the Zombi Nurse while she died.

The patch notes also indicate that minor improvements have been made to the the game's animation transitions, while the framerate has been optimised.

Users will be able to download the 1.2.0 update for ZombiU by launching the game from the Wii U home menu, providing their system is connected to the internet.

Relive a pair of arcade D&D brawlers with Chronicles of Mystara.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33621

A double pack of Dungeons & Dragons beat-'em-ups, dubbed Chronicles of Mystara, is coming to the Wii U eShop this Summer, Capcom revealed during PAX East 2013.

The compilation, which is being handled by Iron Galaxy Studios, contains the arcade titles Towers of Doom and Shadows of Mystara with improved HD visuals and several gameplay enhancements.

Towers of Doom, first released in 1993, is a side-scrolling brawler with traditional RPG elements. Players can choose to control a Fighter, Elf, Dwarf or Cleric, each with a distinct set of attacks and abilities. Its successor, Shadows over Mystara, added a Thief and a Magic-User to this repertoire of characters, as well as new mechanics and branching level paths.

The new versions of this arcade duo will feature instantaneous drop-in/drop-out online multiplayer for up to four friends, and include leaderboards and a rewards-based challenge system. In addition, a new mode called House Rules enables players to customise various aspects of the gameplay.

For the Wii U version, the inventory will be displayed on the GamePad's touchscreen, letting players quickly select different items and spells for use in battle.

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara is due to arrive on the Wii U eShop in June this year, at an expected price point of $14.99/£11.99.

Hard to give them too much credit over adding features that ought to be there in the first place, but nevertheless, this is a game-changer for me. Now that I'll be able to play with all my friends in North America, this has become a much more likely purchase for me, come March 22.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Sells 57K Units in January
« on: February 17, 2013, 05:40:06 AM »
With the Wii U having only been out for a day shy of four months, it's really too early for any of this conversation. When we get the sales figures this time next year, after all the highly-anticipated games have been released and had time to circulate the market, we will then know enough to have an informed discussion about the health of the system. But not until then.

The 3DS eShop is really gaining some strong momentum now. I'm interested in all four of these games (even the Dillon's Rolling Western sequel - I never played the original and I know it wasn't especially well thought of, but the potential is there for a better game to spawn out of those mechanics.)

Yep. From what I can surmise, the only form of communication playing online are those preset text bubbles, but it's better than nothing. Looking forward to the first Luigi's Mansion Community Night.

TalkBack / Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Preview
« on: February 15, 2013, 06:55:04 PM »

What did we learn from the recent Luigi-centric Nintendo Direct? Read on to find out.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/33338

All across the world, Chinese communities are celebrating the coming of the Year of the Snake, but for the avid Nintendo fan, there was only one calendar on our minds this week.

During Thursday's Nintendo Direct presentation, Satoru Iwata helped bring in the "Year of Luigi," and at the head of this new movement for old Green 'Stache, we earned another extended look at the much-anticipated Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. The 3DS sequel to the ghostbusting GameCube launch adventure has been a long time coming, having made its surprise debut all the way back at E3 2011, but thankfully, the wait is nearly over. Now, with the game's March release impending, let us shed some light on the new details unveiled at the latest Nintendo Direct.

It is definitely worth noting how far the game's visuals have come since the initial reveal almost two years ago. Although Dark Moon may have unexpectedly dropped out of 2012, developer Next Level Games looks to have put the extra production time to good use, as there are noticeable improvements to the shadow effects, lighting—particularly the lens flare created when Luigi's torch faces the camera—and the overall level of detail in the environments. Producer Shigeru Miyamoto has said the game is more about slapstick comedy capers than it is creating horror (No duh!), but the charming haunted house atmosphere that was such a great strength of the original Luigi's Mansion is still here in full effect.

Along with these graphical enhancements, we also see an increased amount of moving parts throughout the mansions in Dark Moon, and combining these parts with the upgraded Poltergust 5000 is what forms the crux of many of the game's puzzles. In the most recent batch of gameplay footage, we observe Luigi using his vacuum clearner to aim and fire projectiles, uncover hidden doors by tearing up carpets, and inflate a balloon, enabling him to float up to otherwise-inaccessible locations. The enemy variety has been greatly expanded, too; as well as the regular ghosts, it appears Luigi can come under attack from just about anything in the environment, from suits of armour and polar bear rugs to jack-in-the-boxes and oversized Venus Flytraps.

Those ethereal paw prints mean that a Polterpup must be nearby. Here, boy!

We also learned more about the brand-new Dark-Light Device, which we previously knew could be used to reveal invisible walkways and objects. Luigi will need this tool to hunt down a new type of ghost, known as the Polterpup. These phantom canines have a penchant for making off with important keys, and in order to track them down, Luigi must trace the Polterpup's spectral footsteps with the Dark-Light until he is close enough to suck it in with the Poltergust.

This leads us on, finally, to the Scarescraper multiplayer section of the game, for which Nintendo has now pulled back the curtain on the full suite of options. Hunter mode, which was announced last month, has players working together to eliminate every ghost on the floor. In addition to this, Rush mode tasks players with finding the floor's exit within a time limit. They must defeat enemies to collect clocks, extending the timer, but the escape hatch will not open until every player stands on a switch at the end, meaning that tight cooperative play is absolutely essential to succeeding in this mode. Alternatively, in Polterpup mode, players must hunt down packs of the aforementioned ghost dogs with their Dark-Light Devices.

Which of these Luigis will play the Bill Murray character?

In retrospect, most would agree that the first Luigi's Mansion was more of a technology demonstration than it was a fleshed-out adventure title. 12 years on, it seems that, with the new mechanics and modifications to the original formula, Dark Moon could be the game we all hoped the GameCube original would be. While there are still plenty of reservations regarding the game's control scheme and overall structure, we cannot wait to get our hands on Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon when it is released on March 20 in Japan, March 24 in North America, and March 28 in Europe.

Sounds like a good fit for the platform. Cynically, you might think of it as just another re-release, but being a 2D platformer, and one with a lot of multi-tiered level design, this new versions makes plenty of sense.
