I hope so.  Maybe I misread something, but I had kinda gotten then impression that the entire soundtrack was gonna be orchestral.

Well like most people, I was pretty upset with Blade's silence.  I played through the first Sin that came with Emergence before Emergence was released, and at the end the thing that stood out the most for me was Blade, JC, and their relationship.  That was completely thrown out the window in Emergence, and it struck me as a stupid attempt to mimick HL that didn't fit Sin at all.

I also thought the story was lacking.  They had a good set-up.  Just like HL2:Ep1 was all about escaping City 17 to avoid the exploding citadel, Emergence was all about going after this Radek guy.  A relatively small, relatively simple goal to build an episode around.  But they didn't develop the characters or anything at all, really, except for making Jessica out to be a huge pain in the ass.  If she's gonna boss me around, Blade needs to at least yell at her or something and put her in her place.  There also wasn't much closure.  In HL2:Ep1, I knew I escaped the city, even if the ending brought up another question.  In Emergence, you're not even sure if you got Radek.  Was that Radek's helicopter?  Did I really get him, or did he just run away?  What was I injected with?  What about Jessica?  What about the war-mutants?  Setting up the next episode is one thing, but they didn't really finish the first, it seems.

In general, I felt kinda let down.  Where was the cool car chase through the city?  Why is there so little to do other than run and shoot?  In Sin you could pseudo hack computers, you had objectives, the levels were a bit less linear and restricting.  I don't know, I had fun, but I was expecting more.

Well let me tell you its not. As Spak-Spang mentioned it's not cheap at all, especailly in Japan as it's actually less expensive (and has been done before) to fly a crew out to Russia or Germany and use their orchestras while bringing along a Japanese composer. So this is not something where they simply said "Eh, want to use a Orchestra?" "Sure, why the hell not?" There are huge expenses attached so this descion does not come easy, and it's why you don't see a great deal of orchestration in video games as it's not economically feasible for the most part.

The cost is actually part of my perception that it's often used even when another type of music might fit better.  Like it's sometimes used just as a way to show off, like, "Check it out, we spent a bunch of money to make fancy orchestra music."  That is, having fully orchestral music is another bullet that can be added to the box, so to speak.

Anyway, I just don't like seeing it used out of context is all, like my Deus Ex theme example.  Like, from melee I thought the music for the fountain of dreams fit pretty well, but had they tried to use orchestra music for Mr. Game And Watch's stage, it wouldn't have fit at all, imo.  I just don't want them to limit themselves to orchestra music for every single stage in Brawl just because orchestra music is presitgious, when another style might suit it better, you know?

I'm not mistaking it for anything, I just don't like it. :b
And there are some things an orchestra just can't do.  For example, the orchestra version of the Deus Ex theme they randomly decided to use for the PS2 version of the game lacked a lot of the original's tone.  I'm not saying this is necessarily true, but to me it just seems like they were like "whoa, orchestra music is fancy, let's use it because we can!"

Speaking of that early scene, I think Eli's voice acting was a lot better in Episode 1.  In HL2 he always sounded so calm about everything.  He actually sounded pretty stressed out in Episode 1.

I've been playing through it again with the commentary.  Heehee, Gabe always sounds like he reading from a script in these. X3

Personally ,I can't wait to see how the music turns out.

I know lots of people like it, it's just an idiosyncasy of mine.  I really don't think it has any inherent superiority however (eg "you can do more with it"), I think that's a matter of personal preference.

Maybe, but that's not really the impression I got.  And I really don't like orchestra music.  But what really bugs me is when it seems like it's being used just for the sake of using orchestral music, because it's supposedly more epic or some junk.  Anyway, it's not like I'll hate the game if the music stinks, but obviously I'd prefer to listen to music I liked reasonably well while beating people up.

The only thing I'm kinda worried about is that I'm afraid I'm gonna really hate the music in this game.  My favorite track from melee was the Brinstar stage.  There's no orchestral substitute for an electric guitar.

Come one, you know Snake's really a sweety-pie on the inside.

I haven't finished it yet, but so far I'm finding Episode 1 to be more interesting than HL2 (which I thought was somewhat dull, though I can't put my finger on why).  Iirc, they've been saying it would be a "dense" single player experience.  They weren't kidding.  It seems there's always something new to do, often involving Alyx (who they've done a great job with here, imo).  I'm diggin' it.

Question to Nintendo if you are watching:
When are you going to release the black DSL? Do you know how many people are holding out for a black DS/L? We don't want to pay import prices and we don't want to paintit ourselves. PLEASE release the Black versions of the DS & DSL in the US soon.

I'd be tempted to get one if they had a better selection of colors.  I'm hoping a deep purple will eventually come, but if black is made available I may end up getting that rather than waiting for a color that may never come.  But in any case, I don't understand the incosistency of color availability among the various territories.

You just explained why they won't be in Brawl.
