Nintendo Gaming / RE: Super. Paper. Mario. April. 2007.
« on: April 07, 2007, 09:53:15 PM »
Well the game has been getting 9's from pretty much every major publication so it's not really surprising.  But after reading about all the different reviews the game easily sounds like a perfect 10 to me.  The biggest problem reviewers are having is it not a traditional Mario Platformer, but instead Paper Mario with Platforming instead of turn based battles.  Now I agree that this is a valid complaint for many, but for a huge Paper Mario fan like myself, I could care less.

When I first read about the game at last years E3, I was expecting it to be just a spin off of Paper Mario with more Platforming and so it wouldn't be like the other Mario Platformers.  And now when I read these reviews, it sounds like the game ended up the way I expected it to all along, so I'll have no problems with it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Metroid Prime 3 Revolutionized
« on: April 05, 2007, 02:34:09 PM »
OK, people have to stop saying Metroid Prime 2 did badly.  Yes it didn't sell as good as the first but it still sold well.

Metroid Prime 2 Sales

North America - 800,000
Japan - 70,000
Europe - 370,000
Total - 1.24 million

The reason Prime 2 didn't sell as well as Nintendo hoped was because of bad marketing, coming out the same time as Halo 2, and the biggest reason is the fact that the Gamecube was on it's death bed back in the fall of 2004.

The first Metroid Prime was released back in the fall of 2002 when the Gamecube was still considered alive by most people.  If you look at the sales back then you'll see that Gamecube games were putting up good numbers and since Prime was the Gamecubes flagship title for the holiday it was the must have item for Gamecube owners.  Jump ahead 2 years and the Gamecube was in bad shape.  Third Parties had all completly abandoned the system and the media only talked about the PS2 and the X-Box, and so the Gamecube was all but forgotten by the average gamer.  So the only audience left for Prime 2 was the remaining hardcore Nintendo fans and that was it.

The fact that Prime 3 will be coming out now when the Wii is insanely popular I say is going to give it really good sales, but it'll never be a huge hit.  The Metroid franchise just isn't the type of series that alot of people play.  Yes it has a good sized loyal hardcore fanbase but to the average person, it's just not their thing.  I think it comes down to how you really have to think in Metroid games to figure your way through the world is what makes people back off.

Plus people also have to realize that the Metroid franchise has never been insanely popular.  Look at the numbers for the other Metroid games and you'll see the series has never really had huge mass market appeal.

Metroid

North America - 1.35 million
Japan - 1.04 million
Europe - 340,000
Total - 2.73 million

Metroid II: Return of Samus

North America - 860,000
Japan - 520,000
Europe - 340,000
Total - 1.72 million

Super Metroid

North America - 580,000
Japan - 710,000
Europe - 130,000
Total - 1.42 million

Metroid Fusion

North America - 1.08 million
Japan - 180,000
Europe - 290,000
Total - 1.55 million

Metroid Prime

North America - 1.92 million
Japan - 120,000
Europe -730,000
Total - 2.77 million

I already posted Prime 2's numbers, plus Zero Mission and Hunters both never passed the million mark so VGcharts doesn't have numbers for them.

And now Sony is failing in all three major markets.  Unless Sony suddenly drops the price to something that's actually affordable, then they're pretty much screwed.  Funny how just a few years ago the so called "experts" thought that Sony would continue to dominate and that this would be Nintendo's last generation.

But now it's Nintendo who's doing the dominating and with all the money Sony's losing, this could end up being their last gen.

I say you should have given this game an even lower score because SNK tryed to blame their own lazyness on Nintendo.  Back in December there was some article on IGN with someone from SNK and they said the reason the game didn't use the Classic Controller was because Nintendo wasn't allowing third parties to use it right away because they wanted all attention on the Wiimote.  But what SNK said was complete sh!t since Dragon Ball Z, which came out a MONTH EARLIER as a launch game used the Classic Controller.

I would have given the game a 1 just for that fact alone.  It's one thing for a SNK to be lazy, but it's another for them to blame Nintendo just to cover their own sorry asses.

The game was possible to beat.  All you needed was a Game Genie and the code for unlimited energy and you were all set.  Of course you have to be careful when fighting Shedder because if he shoots you with his gun it will still kill you instantly.  That's because his gun kills you be turning you into a regular little turtle and so unlimited energy can't protect you from that.

Oh so instead of Sonic Team that did Sonic the Hedgehog 360, we get Sega Studios USA who did Shadow the Hedgehog.

That's like being asked if you want your left or right eye ripped out.  Either choice is going to suck for you and be very painful.

Well now that we know the game is indeed real, all that's left now is to pray that the game end's up good.  But unless Sega is able to bring back everyone that was involved with the original for the Saturn, I have no faith in this game at all.  Sonic Team these days is incapable of doing anything great let alone decent.  The best anyone can really hope for is something that's just remotely passable.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official Wii Sales Thread

I dont think the Godfathers sales will have much to do with anything.  All that matters is for the Wii to become the market leader and then we'll have alot of M rated games coming this way.

The whole seeing how well an M rated games sells excuse was just abunch of sh!t that third parties used last gen so they wouldn't have to support the Gamecube.  That's why most of the M rated games were crappy ports of year old games that had no chance of selling in the first place.  Companies never wanted to support the Gamecube and so looked for any reason they could not to support it.  And so by making sure their crappy games sold like crap, it allowed them to use the BS that was M rated games dont sell on Nintendo consoles.

The Wii on the other hand is GOING to become the market leader and have the largest user base.  With Nintendo now running the show, third parties will have no choice but to start supporting the Wii more heavily and that includes bring their M rated games as well.  Unless they hate money and are run by idiots like Capcom, they'll have to support the Wii with all they have.

Considering how well the Wii is selling right now, it'll easily surpass the 360's sales this summer around the time of E3.  Which is why I'm saying there's going to be alot of big announces this E3 because third parties now know that the Wii is where the money is.  This will inturn, give Nintendo a strong M rated lineup of games that will finally destroy there kiddy image once and for all which will finally make the 10-16 year olds feel OK to consider Nintendo cool.

And with Nintendo considered cool by the teenage audience, a huge and diverse line-up of games, and the ultimate killer-app (either Mario Galaxy or Smash Bros Brawl), this fall is going to be NINTENDOMINATION.  After that, Microsoft and Sony will never be able to catch up.

Twilight Princess has sold 560,000 copies in Japan and the Wii has a user base of 2 million in Japan.  That means 1/4 of the people that bought a Wii over there bought Zelda.  People only think Zelda isn't doing well because it's not in the top 30 but what it's been doing is hovering within the 40-50 spot these last several months, where it's pulling in small but steady numbers every week.

In other words, Twilight Princess is popular among the Japanese gamers as well.  Not as popular as in America and Europe, but still popular none the less.

Wait, so it's being done by Sega's sports division and Miyamoto will actually be heavly involved.  Well then, it might actually turn out OK.

The sports division of Sega is one of the more competent parts of that company and with Miyamoto leading the way I can see some good results.  Plus this means the mentally challenged monkeys of Sonic Team will have nothing to do with the game which greatly lowers the chance of sucking.

According to this article Sony shipped 1 million PS3's to Europe and sold 600,000 of them.

But when you consider that Sony sold over 42 million PS2's in Europe and dominated that territory last gen, the fact that they only sold 60% of their PS3 shipments at launch is actually quite bad.  Plus everyone has to remember that at launch the die hard fans are always going to buy it right away.  Just look at what happend here in America were we had riots and people killing each other for a PS3 right away, but then less then 2 months later, you could walk into your local Best Buy and see a pile of over 20 PS3 that haven't even been touched yet.

So these early sales mean nothing, and considering how expensive the PS3 is in Europe, I see it's sales dropping very quickly.

This news can only mean the world is about to end.  Farewell everyone, for the apocalypse is near.  I guess we'll have to find a place in hell to continue our Nintendo discussions.

And this is actually related to this topic since the punishment for gamers like us will be to play Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 360 for all eternity.

What they do is add up the numbers from all the sales data they can find from different sources like NPD and Media Create and then make some estimations.  Even though they're not 100% accurate, they do give us the general idea of how the different systems and games are doing.

Which is better then having no info at all.

Well maybe not crashed and burned but things aren't looking too good.  All of the big third party games that were announced for the PS3, were announced and development was started before Sony's infamous E3 2006 press conferance.  The thing that I look at is how the Gamecube was putting up better numbers then the PS3 is right now.  As we all remember, third parties had no hope for the Gamecube from the start and never even gave it a chance.  They gave the system crappy ports in the beggining and then used the low sales as an excuse to cut development for a system they didn't want to develop for in the first place.

Well when I see the PS3 sales being worse then the Gamecube's early sales, I wonder what must be going through third parties minds.  If back in 2001, if Final Fantasy X or Metal Gear Solid 2 would have been games scheduled for the Gamecube, Square and Konami would have been angry as all hell over the systems low early sales and would have announced a PS2 port right away.  They would never have allowed their big name series to be on a system with such a small user base.  Well now their big name series are on the system with an even LOWER userbase.

Well considering how popular the original was back in the day, it's not too surprising.  Back then there wasn't much for videogame media and so most people bought games without really knowing what they were about.  Most of the people that bought it probobly thought it would be like the original only to be surprised when they started playing for the first time.

3793
Segagamer is kind of right about X-Box owners not wanting Final Fantasy, the X-Box fanbase in general doesn't care too much for Final Fantasy.  Here on the internet, yes, there are alot of X-Box owners that would love to see Final Fantasy, but that's only a small percent.

The reason the X-Box and the 360 are doing well here in America, but poorly everywhere else in the world is because the system is primarly an American console that's caters to a Western audience with Western games.  The X-Box last gen had 38 games that sold over a million copies, yet out of those 38 only TWO  were from Japanese companies.  And those two games were Dead or Alive 3 from Tecmo and ESPN NFL 2K5 from Sega.  Here's the rest to show the taste in games the X-Box fanbase has.

Halo 2
Halo
Tom Clancy Splinter Cell
Fable
Grand Theft Auto Double Pack
Project Gotham Racing
Need for Speed: Underground 2
Star Wars: Knights of the Republic
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Tom Clancy Ghost Recon
Need for Speed: Underground
Star Wars: Battlefront
Tom Clancy Rainbow Six 3
Project Gotham Racing 2
Dead or Alive 3
Madden NFL 2005
Madden NFL 2006
Tom Clancy Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
ESPN NFL 2K5
Medal Of Honour Frontline
Star Wars: Battlefront II
Tom Clancy Ghost Recon 2
Spiderman: The Movie
True Crime: Streets of LA
Enter the Matrix
Star Wars: Knights of the Republic 2
Tony Hawks Underground
Doom III
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Medal Of Honour Rising Sun
Max Payne
Tom Clancy Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Call of Duty: Finest Hour
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Spiderman: The Movie 2
Forza Motorsport

And here's the 360's list that shows that the taste in the X-Boxes fanbase is still the same.

Gears of War
Call of Duty 2
Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Madden NFL 07
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Call of Duty 3
Crackdown
Fight Night Round 3
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (From Capcom, but very western styled)
Tom Clancy Rainbow Six: Vegas
Perfect Dark Zero
Dead Rising (Same as Lost Planet)
Saints Row
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Need For Speed: Carbon

Once again, the X-Box is an American system that appeal primarily to Western audiences with Western games.  The only Japanese games to sell well are the ones that are made to appeal to an American audience.  Final Fantasy is just too Japanese for the X-Boxes primary fanbase.  Even if it did well the most Square could hope for is 2 million MAX.  The highest selling RPG on an X-Box system has been KotoR with 1.95 million, and when compared to how FFX sold 7.95 million, FFX-2 sold 5.21 million and FFXII 4.94 million so far, I dont see Square even trying to take a chance with Microsoft.

This is why Square-Enix hasn't given the 360 any real support because they know their games would sell horrible compare to how well they could be selling on the Wii and PS3.  But now that the PS3 has crashed and is in need of a miracle the Wii is the only system that can give Square-Enix the sales they want.  And it doesn't matter how underpowered the Wii is, if Square wants money they'll find a way to put FFXIII on the Wii.  If they have to downgrade it like crazy, they'll do it, as long as they can get high sales that's all Square will care about.

Last gen proved that the system with the highest user base will get the most games, regardless of how powerful it is.  If a company wants a game on the Wii they'll put it on the Wii, just like if they wanted it on the PS2, they found a way to put it on the PS2.

North America - 850,000
Japan - 40,000
Europe - 280,000
Total - 1.17 million

Both version of Twilight Princess Total - 4.25 million

I dont have the numbers for Four Swords Adventures on the Gamecube because VGcharts only lists the sales of games that have sold over 1 million copies.  So that makes Four Swords Adventures the only Zelda to not break the million mark.

Links Awakening

North America - 2.24 million
Japan - 540,000
Europe - 1.05 million

Total 3.83 million

Links Awakening sold 3.83 million copies worldwide.  I was only posting the Zelda's that have surpassed the 4 million mark which Twilight Princess just did.

3796
If Final Fantasy XIII was to be put on a system other then the PS3 it would go on the Wii long before the X-Box 360.  That's because they NEED the Japanese market for Final Fantasy games.  Every Final Fantasy since FFV has sold over 2 million copies in Japan, and so Square would want to put the game on a system that can hit those numbers.  With the 360 dead and gone in Japan, the Wii is the ONLY system that could hit those numbers in Japan.

On the PS2, FFX sold 3.02 million copies in Japan, FFX-2 sold 2.41 million and FFXII has 2.42 million copies.  I doesn't matter how much Square has to downgrade, they'll find a way to put FFXIII on the Wii because I dont see them letting go of their Japanese fanbase that makes up around 40-50% of the overall sales for each Final Fantasy.

Plus there's the fact that at the rate the Wii is selling, it will surpass the 360 in sales sometime in July or August, which would make it the system that would sell more copies of FFXIII in both America and Europe.  Which will pretty much force Square to have to port the game to the Wii when the Wii is the most popular system around the world and the ONLY system that can pull in the high sales numbers the previous games in the series have been pulling in.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Official Wii Sales Thread
« on: March 20, 2007, 11:53:52 AM »
Well this news doesn't surprise me because I knew the game would be hot but here it is for everyone else.

Twilight Princess surpasses the 4 million mark

According to all the sales data it gets broken down like this.

Wii version - 3.08 million

North America - 1.55 million
Japan - 560,000
Europe - 970,000

Gamecube version - 1.17 million

North America - 850,000
Japan - 40,000
Europe - 280,000

Both versions total - 4.25 million

Here's the lifetime sales for the other Zelda's to surpass 4 million

Ocarina of Time - 7.60 million
Legend of Zelda (Original) - 6.51 million
Link to the Past - 4.61 million
Adventures of Link - 4.38 million
Wind Waker - 4.35 million

So when you see this Twilight Princess will easily surpass Link to the Past, Adventures of Link and Wind Waker this year.  But when you look at the attachment rate and how well the game is selling, the chances are really good that Twilight Princess will actually surpass Ocarina of Time and the Original over the next several years and become the best selling Zelda.

And when the next Zelda for the Wii wont be out until at least 2009, I dont see sales slowing down anytime soon.

3798
Even though it's bad for Sony when they keep losing exclusives, I dont see why everyone keeps acting like losing DMC is a big deal.  The best selling DMC game was the first one with 2.77 million copies worldwide.  Then the series went downhill with DMC 2 selling 1.69 million copies and DMC 3 1.62 million copies.

As you can see even if DMC 4 would have stayed exclusive it wouldn't have done much for the PS3 anyway.
