TalkBack / Re: Iwata Reveals Number of Global Wii, DS Million Sellers
« on: February 01, 2009, 02:41:06 AM »

That's my point. It's great to see MORE titles selling more than a million. But in comparison to stuff like Wii Fit and Mario Kart which is just selling lots all the time continuously it shows the massive gap between them.

Well of course there's going to be a huge gap between them.  In the case of Wii Fit it was a game that was heavily advertised and marketed to the right audience very well.  In the case of Mario Kart, it's the new installment of a long running series that's always sold millions, not to mention it also had a big marketing campaign.

It's basic economics going on here.  Right now third parties have still not taken the Wii seriously.  They barely advertise their games and don't release major well know titles.  As a result, of course their sales aren't going to come anywhere near Nintendo's who advertises and releases well known brands.

When major third party games like Monster Hunter 3 and Dragon Quest X are released, then we can start making real comparisons.

I can see why some people actually thought this might be a new game.  Sonic Chaos was only released on the Master System in Europe and South America, and was one of the very last games released for that system.

As a result not many people know that Sonic Chaos was indeed released for the Master System.  It's only too bad that Sonic Triple Trouble which came out a year later was Game Gear only since I find that one to be the best of the 8-bit Sonic games.  It'd be nice to have a Master System version of that game so it could appear on the Virtual Console as well.

Yeah I know all the Game Gear Sonic games are on Sonic Adventure DX, Collection Plus and Gems, but I prefer the Master System versions.  Having a larger screen which the Master System versions have definitely improves the games and in the case of Sonic 2, the Master System version made that game somewhat playable.

Is that Okami Wii? I think I did see credits in the PS2 version.

Yeah the PS2 version has credits.  The Wii version doesn't because Capcom didn't give Ready at Dawn the proper code for it.  Since Ready of Dawn didn't have the correct code for the credit they could not edit it and so they had to remove the entire thing since Capcom refused to allow the Clover logo to be shown since it's in the credits.

It goes to show how Capcom didn't give a **** about the Wii version in the fact they didn't even give Ready at Dawn the complete code for the game.  Lucky for us though, Ready at Dawn actually cared about the project and put a lot of time and effort in order to work around this issue the best they could.

Wow this game is looking great.  Of course that's to be expected since Alpha Dream was given a longer development time for this game.

The reason the 2nd game wasn't up to par with the original is because it was done in a much shorter time frame and was basically rushed out for the DS fall 2005 lineup.  With this 3rd one though, it looks like Alpha Dream was allowed to take their time, and the result so far looks to be a much more polished and innovative experience.

Hmm, all this talk of looking at first post got me thinking.  Lets see here, my first post.

My guess will be if the price is revealed during E3 then it will probobly be $200 but if they say they'll reveal it at a later date then it'll be over $200.

I remember hearing a rumor that Nintendo might not say the price at E3 which if true, points to the Wii being over the $200 range since they know annoucing the system for that much might anger some people and they want all the attention at E3 to be on just the games.

Well look at that, I was 100% right.  Since the Wii was launch for over $200, Nintendo didn't announce the price at E3.  Instead they announced the $250 at a later date that ended up being their September event.

Of course I'm surprised I've only been a member for only 2.5 years, it feel much longer then that.  Then again, I started lurking the forums back in 2002, so that might explain it.  I'm just an extremly lazy person in real life and so it took me about 4 years before I got motivated enough to finally join in on the fun.

« on: January 29, 2009, 06:23:22 PM »
One thing I'd like to point out is don't expect too many characters in this game.  This is only the first game in what could be a series.  The first game in most fighting series usually only have a roaster around the mid-teens.  And since we have 5 characters confirmed right now, that only leaves room for around 10 more characters, or maybe even less.

Now there could end up being more character but right now it's best to keep expectations realistic since this is how the majority of fighting games start out.

26,000 is... well, the Japanese market is just anemic all around. let's not forget that in Japan, hardcore games have a one to two week shelf life and that's it. I'd consider 26,000 a pretty big failure in that market. They have GOT to be depending on overseas sales.

Actually 26,000 is really good when you consider the fact that Namco only shipped around 30 - 35K copies.  Not to mention according to people on Neo GAF who are living in Japan, the game had no advertising either.

So in reality, Fragile could be considered a success since Namco sent it out to die with no advertising and low shipments.  In other words, it's another example of a third party creating a self-fulfilling prophecy on the Wii by doing all they can to make sure their games fails.

Since the original news hit, my frothing demand for this game has increased.  Even if it is a blatant ripoff of Smash Bros. with TMNT, those are still two of my favorite things.

Please be good.

Actually I hope this game is a blatant ripoff of Smash Bros because then we know it'll be a great game.  They should just ask Nintendo if they can call the game Smash Bros: Turtle Edition.

With all the potential this game could have, I just want it to be good.  If being good involves blatant plagarizism, then I'm all for it.

Nice to see that not only does the game still live, but it looks like it's developing nicely.  Of course I wonder how far in development they are though?  I wonder if they might have been unsure with how they wanted to make the game for some time but now the team has a clear directions with what they want to do.  Kind of like with RE4, they kept changing what they wanted the game to be like before they finally came up with a clear direction.

This might explain why it's been so long since we last heard any info about the game.

You should all read the interview I posted a few months back.

http://nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2008/drawing_wario_the_animation_of_wario_land_9515.html

It's with the development team talking about how they made the game.  The part where they talk about how they made the visuals is quite impressive.  Like the fact that Wario has over 2000 frames of animation, or the fact that all the different backgrounds in the game that were all unique and hand-drawn alone would have filled up an entire Gamecube disc alone.

Well this is interesting, according to the end of this article, Wario Land Shake has sold 150K in North America alone by the end of December.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/947/947929p1.html

This is great news since according to IGN, Wario Land Shake only sold around 20K in it's opening month in September.  This means Wario Land has had some pretty good legs then.  Nice to see that all the good word of mouth from gamers finally got the message across to people that Wario Land Shake is a great game to play.

Plus if you combine the fact that the game sold around 100K in Japan, that put Wario Land Shake at 250K between America and Japan.  Now I don't know what it's done in Europe but considering most Wii games do better there then in Japan I'd imagine it's around 100K there as well.  At the very least it has to be somewhere over 50K in Europe.  This way we can at least say right now that Wario Land Shake has sold over 300K worldwide.

Considering Wario Land Shake is a 2d game that was released on a home console, with no advertising, and at full price, this is quite an accomplishment for the game.  I'd imagine Nintendo is quite pleased with these results since by their lack of advertising they clearly expected the worse.

Hopefully this means Nintendo will have Good Feel make more 2d games for them in the future since they now know that 2d games can put up decent numbers on the Wii.

Well this is great news for me.  I've been meaning to eventually buy Accent Core, but now I have a reason to wait.

Plus this shows that the Wii version of Accent Core did well in North America since we're getting this game.  The reason there's no Wii version of Plus in Japan is because Accent Core did beyond terrible over there.  In it's first week it sold around 1000 copies.  Even for a niche series like Gulity Gear that's way too low.

I would love for Nintendo to ask Sega if they could develop a Mario and Sonic crossover platform game...and then Nintendo puts a premiere development team on it and creates the BEST 3D sonic game with a great sense of speed, camera angle and the game feels like sonic.

That too me would be the ultimate Nintendo does what Sega...don't?

Which is why Sega would never allow that to happen.

Well Nintendo already showed that they could in Mario Galaxy.  The parts where you become Rainbow Mario have Mario moving quite fast and when he jumps he does a summersault similar to Sonic.  Not to mention did it all with an amazing camera system as well.

If Nintendo were to have a Mario and Sonic crossover, I'd imagine Sonic would control just like Rainbow Mario, except faster.  Which would make him Rainbow Luigi then.  ;D

This is why a Nintendo Mario and Sonic game developed by Tokyo EAD would work out great.  Mario could remain the same as he is in Mario Galaxy, while Sonic would play like the Rainbow powerups, except with different moves to seperate the characters.  This way they'd be able to play the same levels, except their different moves would allow them to reach different area's in the level.  It would end up similar to Sonic 3 where Tails and Knuckles can both access area's that Sonic can't.

And since it'd be developed by Tokyo EAD, you know they'd be able to design each level in a way so that they take advantage of both characters strengths and weaknesses.  In other words, you'll have fun playing through the game as both Mario and Sonic.

Of course, the only people allowed to develop this game are Tokyo EAD and ONLY Tokyo EAD.  Iwata should give an order to security that any Sega or Sonic Team members that come anywhere within 500 feet of the studio are to be shot at sight, no questions asked.

« on: January 12, 2009, 02:15:31 AM »

Its what a Nintendo game would look like if it was developed by a hardcore gamer.

That's because it was.  Back in 2005 when Sakurai first revealed some info, he said he was introduced to a mystery studio (that we'd later find out was Game Arts) to help him make the game by Miyamoto and that the people at the studio were all huge fans of Melee.  He also said that the according to games data, these guys had put in thousands of hours into the game.

Of course I wouldn't say Brawl is all serious though.  There's still quite a few silly and charming things in the game.

Now if Sakurai goes and makes the next Smash Bros look like this

then I'd say there's a problem.

I can't speak for EGM now, but I certainly didn't think they were a trashy magazine when I read them back in the late 64/early GC era. I thought they were actually pretty competent, for what they were.... at the time, I thought they were a commendable "mainstream" (i.e. Playstation era gamer) magazine.

Well back then most videogame publications were still pretty good and reported on videogames in a nice way that wasn't bias as hell.  It wasn't until 2002 that things started to change for the worse and most websites and publications became more like fanboy blogs.

Yes, I've been waiting for Dreamland 3 to come out.  I never got to play the game since when it was released a lot of stores around where I am, stopped selling SNES games and so it wasn't around for too long.

I'll definitely be getting this one later tonight.

I've been wanting a Nintendo vs Capcom for many years now.  I even made a prediction in the rumor thread a while ago.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=16688.1050

Quote
I still expect to see a Nintendo vs Capcom one of these days.  Since Capcom loves to do these crossover games (Marvel, SNK, Namco, Tatsunoko, and maybe Sega now) it's only a matter of time.  Plus considering all the deals Nintendo and Capcom have made in the past and keep making with each other, the makes the chances of it happening even greater.

Of course I'm not expecting anything at the current time, but I do believe that sometime in the next 10 years we will see a Nintendo and Capcom crossover.

We still have 10 more years, so it's bound to happen.  ;D

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Zelda: Does it need to change?
« on: January 02, 2009, 05:14:28 PM »
Considering Miyamoto has already said the next Zelda will be different from Twilight Princess, we already know that the series is about to change.  So there's no real point in asking people if the series needs to change, since Nintendo has already stated that it will change.

The real question is, what kind of change exactly can we expect?  Will it be smaller changes here and there, that end up making the final project feel different, even though the main gameplay is still similar?  Or are we looking at a full blown change like Resident Evil 4 that pretty much turns the game into a whole new series?

Wario Land Shake

A top notch 2d Platformer with a ton of value.  If Nintendo would have actually tried to advertise the game I honestly think it could have done much better.  Of course it doesn't help that most videogame websites failed at reviewing the game and probably gave some people the wrong impression because of their terrible inaccurate reviews (cough1UpParishcough).

At least I've noticed that most people online who have played it seem to love it as well, so the game does have good word of mouth going for it.  So hopefully it'll end up getting some decent sales in the end so Nintendo will decided to make more 2d games in this same style.

Do you know what Sakamoto is working on now? I'd love to hear more about this guy.

The last game Sakamoto and his team did was the recent Rhythm Tengoku for the DS which came out last July.  So we have no idea what his current project is at this time.  It could be another Rhythm Tengoku, could be something new, or maybe it could actually be another 2d Metroid.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Metroid Series Continuation

I think we're well overdue for a Metroid V.  The DS has been out for four years now and still nothing about a new 2D Metroid in the original series.  IS has busted out new Advance Wars and Fire Emblem games since then but no Metroid.

Ian, IS isn't responsible for the Metroid games.  The Metroid series was always done by Nintendo R&D1 who are now called Nintendo SPD1.  This is the same division that made all the old Wario Land titles as well.  The problem with this studio is it's very small and can only handle one project at a time.  After Metroid: Zero Mission came out, they've been working on the Wario Ware games, and have now moved on to their new series, Rhythm Tengoku.

This is why the latest Wario Land on the Wii was done by Good Feel instead of SPD1, because SPD1 was busy with Rhythm Tengoku DS.  Of course considering how good a job Good Feel did with Wario, I wouldn't mind it if Nintendo allowed them to make a 2d Metroid as well.  I mean, the Wario Land games in a way are similar to the Metroid games, and since the Good Feel has shown they can deliver a great Wario Land title, it would be that much of a stretch to think they could also deliver a great Metroid title.

Plus since Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission were both made made on the Wario Land 4 engine, so why not make a 2d Metroid on the Wii using the Wario Land Shake engine?

But who does Metroid have?

Yoshio Sakamoto is still very much alive.  People need to realize, he the true creator of the series.  Gunpei Yokoi was only the producer who over looked the projects because he was in charge of Nintendo R&D1 at the time, but the man who actually directed and did the majority of the work was Yoshio Sakamoto.  Not to mention, Super Metroid which is considered the best, was ALL Sakamoto.  Yokoi had barely any involvement in Super Metroid's creation since he was busy designing the Virtual Boy at the time.  Which left Sakamoto to be in charge of pretty much the entire game with Makoto Kanoh helping out.

Oh, and Yoshio Sakamoto played a big role in Metroid Prime 1's development by overlooking things and giving major input as well.  Metroid Prime 2 and 3 on the other hand, he played a very minor role in their development.  Which might explain why Prime 1 is the most like the 2d Metroids while Prime 2 and 3 started to differ more.

dude did u even ever finsh 3 100%? they cant end it

Don't worry, there will be sequel to Prime 3 in the future.  Prime 3 sold over 1.5 million copies, and the series has been one of Nintendo's most popular and bestselling for the last 5 years now.  But you have to remember that Prime 3 came out only a little over a year ago and Retro stated their next game would be something other then Metroid.  So don't expect any future 3d Metroid games to appear for a few years now.
