General Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV
« on: February 21, 2009, 05:24:32 PM »
Question. If you are someone, like, well me, who liked Street Fighter 2 along with the Turbo edition, is this game worth getting even though I've missed out on every iteration since then?

Don't worry you'll be fine.  After playing the game for several hours last night, I can say that Street Fighter 4 is pretty much another version of Street Fighter 2 except with some new characters and big super moves.

So anyone that was a fan of Street Fighter 2 will instantly be able to play the game and have fun with it.  The only people I can see having trouble would be big fans of Street Fighter 3 since the parry system is gone now.

This game is great so far, but MAN, what were they thinking with that intro song!!??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ5WUyqHu2U

Its like they asked Disney to re-create a dance song from 1993.

Why is there boy band in my Street Fighter?  That has got to be the most out of place song I've ever heard in a videogame.  It doesn't fit the game or it's style one bit.

It'd be like watching Rambo, and having some Backstreet Boy song suddenly start playing while he's blowing everyone away.  It just doesn't work.

Why don't Konami just make a 2D Castlevania with Guilty Gear style graphics..big characters with fluid animation? It's not that hard. Vanillaware does this great with Oboro Muramasa and Odin Sphere...I know Konami can make a sidescroller like that.

It's because Konami isn't run by bright people.  They greenlight a Castlevania fighting game that includes the cast of Death Note, and they're allowing IGA to make an expensive 3d Castlevania for the 360/PS3, even though the last 3d Castelvania for the PS2/Xbox bombed and the one before that wasn't exactly a huge hit either.

So in other words, Konami has no problem allowing IGA to waste money on Castlevania's if they're in 3d but he can't make a new 2d game on a home console even though it'd cost less and probably sell more then the 3d ones.

Yeah, not exactly a smart company here.

Well with all the talk about lightgun games these days, here's something for you all to think about.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45716.html

This is a trailer to a recent Castlevania Arcade game in Japan.  Even though it's only in the arcades right now, how much do you want to bet it'll be ported to the Wii sometime in the future.

So, announcement at E3 or are we going to have to wait until the October conference?  Or maybe sometime in between?

We're in trouble then. The game buying public doesn't want zany graphics or excessive gore (of course there's a chance that it'll do well and I'm wrong but I think that's unlikely). The publishers should probably look at The Conduit instead.

Even if Madworld or The Conduit does well, a lot of these companies will still ignore the Wii.  Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition and Umbrella Chronicles both sold over 1 million copies and yet that didn't change anything.  If Madworld does well, they'll just say wait until The Conduit is released.  If that does well, they'll just say wait until the next M-rated titles is released and so on.

A lot of these third parties are pretty much waiting for a high profile M rated third party Wii game to bomb so they can finally justify their reasons for not supporting it.  It's pretty much like the Gamecube all over again where they keep looking for a reason not to support the system until they can find it.

Then they'll do the usual, "See, only Nintendo and family titles sell on the system so there's no audience for us".  Of course, once again ignoring the fact that the Resident Evil games have all been million sellers on both the Gamecube and the Wii.  Showing there is and always been a large sized market for M-rated games on a Nintendo system.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: PUNCH OUT!!
« on: February 19, 2009, 03:50:09 PM »
I am concerned that the new Punch-Out will be a remake.  We haven't seen any screenshots of new characters for example.  After all this time I think we deserve a new game.  No one has waited 15 years to play the NES game with 3D graphics.

15 years is a long time, not to mention Super Punch-Out wasn't anywhere near the popularity that the original was.  So to the average longtime gamer, it's really been over 20 years since the last Punch-Out came out.  The reason the characters from the original are being included is so it'll get the attention of the average Punch-Out fan who probably haven't played the game in 20 years and only remembers the original.

Plus it might be a plan of Nintendo's to make younger gamers interested in playing the original and so they'll go out and download the original on the Virtual Console.  A way of using one product to hopefully sell another to an audience that otherwise might not have been interested.

Well considering how no ones talking about the interview, I might as well post the information from it.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/articles/2009/02/18/nintendo_sakurai_project_sora/

And if any of you were to lazy too read that, it pretty much says Sakurai and this team will be working on a new IP for Nintendo that'll be something people wouldn't expect from Nintendo.  The development of the game will begin in May, and is looking to have a 2 year development cycle.  Meaning it's on schedule for a 2011 release date.

And considering how Nintendo's new policy is to not reveal info until the games near completion, don't expect to hear anything new about this game for a long time.

I don't mind diversity but I don't trust Sakurai to wow us. He was good with Smash Brothers and the Kirby games were fun, not the best designed level wise, but fun. Beyond that, what does he have? Meteos?

Just because you haven't been a fan of Sakurai's work, doesn't change the fact that millions of others are.  Because last time I checked, Kirby's Super Star is as highly praised as the classic Mario titles, and Melee/Brawl are the two best selling fighting games of all time and both highly praised as well.  Not to mention Metoes is considered one of the best puzzle games ever made.

That's a pretty damn good resume if you ask me.  The fact that he's been able to make games in three different genre's that were all highly praised and considered some of the best in each genre, shows what an amazing designer he is.  This is an accomplishment that not many other game designers can claim to have done.

The problem with Brawl is the fact fanboys hyped it up so much with unrealistic expectations, that nothing Sakurai did was going to please them.

In order for Brawl to have been universally loved it would have had to have had over 9,000 characters, with all of these characters 100% unique.  If at least 1 of these characters had a move that was in anyway similar to another, the game would have been a total failure.

Oh and it'd have to be 1,000% balanced.  I say 1,000% because even 100% wouldn't please the fanboys.  If at least one character even has a remote advantage over another, then it means Sakurai is a baby eating Nazi.

Then there's the stages, anything less then 1 million that don't cover every single area ever in a Nintendo game, means Sakurai really caused 9-11.

Oh and finally the music.  Every single song ever made through human history needs to be in the game.  Of course it can't be the original version because that'd be lazy, but if it's a remix, even if the remix sounds 90% like the original, it's considered rape.

Since Brawl was in development since 1632, with the help of Jesus, Mohammad and Buddha, Sakurai has no excuse for all this stuff not being in the game then does he.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Announces Official North American DSi Release Date
« on: February 18, 2009, 03:32:40 PM »
There'd be no Wii, just a display cable like what Nintendo does during tradeshows.  It makes sense for console-friendly games like Castlevania.

You know, I wouldn't doubt it if Nintendo releases something like that someday.  I mean both the Super Gameboy and GBA Player did really well for them, so I wouldn't doubt it if they have plans for something like that.

I mean, wasn't the GBA Player just an extension of the kits they used at those trade shows as well, so I'd imagine making an extension of what they use for the DS would be very reasonable.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Dead Space Extraction
« on: February 18, 2009, 11:01:39 AM »
More like "Extraction of funds" for another 360 disaster.

Yeah pretty much.  Instead of giving the Wii an actual all new Dead Space game, they just took the cheap and easy route that Capcom did with Umbrella Chronicles.  For those that don't know, Umbrella Chronicles was originaly suppose to be a 3rd person Resident Evil game in the same style as RE4, until Capcom decided they didn't want to spend the time and money, and decided to just make it lightgun because it was cheaper and easier.

Of course when Capcom did this back in 2006, they said that they didn't know if there was a market for RE games on the Wii yet, and so an all new Resident Evil like RE4 might be risky.  This is why when Capcom originally released RE4 on the Wii in 2007, they only expected it to sell around 400,000 copies worldwide.  Right now, RE4: Wii Edition has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide, showing that there is a market for these types of games on the Wii.

Oh well, at least this Dead Space an all new game and not just a downgraded port like Dead Rising Wii.  It's be nice though if more third parties would give the Wii actual installment of series and not just spinoff's that franchise games in name only.

Once again, it's still rather sicking that even after the huge success of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, we still haven't recieved any games like it.  That game showed that the Wiimote is PERFECT for third person shooting, and yet, third parties refuse to do it, even though there's a big fanbase for it on the Wii.

After the success of Brawl and it's development it was pretty obvious that Sakurai would come back to Nintendo.

The reason Sakurai left in the first place is because he wanted more creative control in his games.  The straw that broke the camels back for him was how he was overruled during the development of Kirby Air Ride by the higher ups, resulting in the final product not being how he wanted.  Well with Brawl, Sakurai was now given full creative control and as a result his attitude toward Nintendo became much happier again.

I mean, just read some of the interviews with Sakurai back in 2006 and then compare them to the ones in 2008.  In 2006, he didn't sound very excited and talked about how he had to be convinced by others to come back to work on the game.  Not to mention he even said Brawl would be the last Smash Bros he worked on.

Now fastforward to his interviews in 2008 with Brawl's release and Sakurai sounded like he was having the time of his life.  Not to mention he said he'd love to be involved in another Smash Bros now.

It kind of shows that over the course of Brawls two year development, Sakurai's view of working for Nintendo changed bigtime.

2864
I'd like to just say that right now, none of the Mother/Earthbound games have been released on the Japanese Virtual Console either.  Even after the Japanese version of Brawl had a demo of Mother 2 in the Masterpieces section, the game still hasn't come out.

The fact that Nintendo hasn't released them even in Japan yet seems to say that there might be another problem with the games that we don't know about.

For anyone that's interested, here's the Ask Iwata interview of the game.  As always, lots of great comments.

http://fire-emblem.com/shadowdragon/interview/interview1.html

Of course the big surprise is Sakurai is doing the interview instead of Iwata.  Looks like Sakurai is still willing to do whatever Iwata asks him.  Hey, maybe if we're lucky, Iwata will have Sakurai go back to HAL to help them finally finish that Kirby game they've spent the last 40 years on. :P

Borrowing a link from NeoGAF, here is the original Xbox1 demo of Dead Space: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAHyOGtzxYg

Looks capable on the Wii, right?

Well considering the Wii is more powerful then the original Xbox, yes, what was shown on that video is possible.

The real question is, does EA cares enough about the Wii version of the game to even try to make the game look any thing like that?  Or are we going to be stuck with more early to mid-gen PS2 quality graphics, like 90% of EA's other Wii games have been?

2009 does, however, look to be a better year thanks to recent third party efforts and announcements.

Not to mention that the Nintendo studio's that released games in 2007 but didn't have anything in 2008, will probably be ready to release something in 2009, since the average Nintendo studio take around 2 years to develop games.

The thing about Grasshopper is they work on extremely low budgets.  Some of the games they've made, only needed to sell between 10 - 20k just to break even.  That's how low of a budget they work.

Now for No More Heroes, they gave it a bigger budget then most of their other titles, but even then, No More Heroes was done on a low cost.  This is why when No More Heroes sold a few hundred thousand, Suda and crew threw a party because it was a huge success for them.

Instead of worrying about the name, they should be trying to figure out how to make the game not control like a tank that's inside of a larger tank.

Plus fix all the bugs and glitches that are said to have really hurt the Japanese version.

Yeah this kind of stuff actually happens quite often, we just don't hear about it.  A lot of actors are known for losing their temper on set toward either another actor, a crew member or sometime even the director.

I'd be more surprised to find a famous actors who hasn't acted like Bale did at least once during their career.

2873
Well this should make for an interesting E3 then.  If EA truly means what they say then we should see quite a few exclusive titles as well as Wii versions of upcoming HD titles, that aren't PS2 or PSP ports, but instead built from the ground up to finally take advantage of the Wii's hardware.  Not to mention release these Wii versions at the same time as their HD counterparts.

Don't pull a Ubisoft and just end up releasing a bunch of titles that are made by the company cleaning crew on a budget of less then $100 using old N64 development kits.

Didn't the koopa kids appear in a Mario&Luigi or Paper Mario?

They appeared toward the end of the first Mario & Luigi.  They were what help make the final part of that game so amazing.

2875
Miyamoto has hinted that they have another Mario in the works. The Wii has its share of similarities to the NES as has been pointed out, well the NES is the only Nintendo console to have more than one Mario game.

When Miyamoto says they have another Mario in the works, it just means that him and others are thinking of idea's for the next Mario, not that it's in development.

The only reason people think another Mario is in the works is because Nintendo has said the Mario Team is working on another title.  The Mario Team in reality is Tokyo EAD, and all those comments meant is that Tokyo EAD is working on some game.

Nintendo just calls Tokyo EAD the Mario Team during certain interviews so the average person can realize who they are.  Kind of like how Movie studio's have to say from the people who brought you this movie instead of the names of the actual people, since the average person only knows the product and not those behind the product.
