General Gaming / Re: Star Fox creator says some stuff
« on: April 07, 2009, 08:51:17 PM »
I'd buy any Star Fox game in a second, which is why I'm mystified that not only is Nintendo not producing a new game in the series

We don't know that Nintendo isn't producing a new Star Fox.  Look at the upcoming Excite Bots coming out later this months.  According to Monster Games, they worked on that game for over 2 years and yet, Nintendo didn't reveal it until the end of Febuary, 2 months before it's release later this month.

So for all we know, Star Fox Wii could already be 98% done and Nintendo is just waiting until E3 to reveal it.

The problem was the shoe-horning. If the team started out thinking about a StarFox Adventure game, then I bet it would have been much better.

No the game still would have been poor because Rare had become a slacker studio by then, which is why Nintendo got rid of them.  Even if the game got to remain Dinosaur Planet, the mediocre gameplay would have remained.  Instead of getting a poor new IP, we got a poor Star Fox game instead.

People have to stop blaming Miyamoto for the way Star Fox Adventures turned out.  Miyamoto didn't tell Rare to make the game one big boring collect-a-thon with lame combat and gameplay.  This was all Rare's doing and only Rare's doing.

I love how the G4 article says he was responsible for 64, which is a huge lie.  Cuthbert had nothing to do with Star Fox 64 at all.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/n64/star-fox-64/credits

Of course since it's G4 I shouldn't be surprised since they're one of the biggest jokes in all of gaming.  But this is a rather big deal since Star Fox 64 is widely regarded as the best one, and this guy had no involvement what so ever in it.  This goes to show that this guys words shouldn't be taken too seriously, when Miyamoto and Nintendo are the ones solely responsible for making the best in the series without his involvement.

Oh yeah, not to mention Dylan Cuthbert is NOT the creator of the original Star Fox.  The man who deserves most of the credit for the original Star Fox is Katsuya Eguchi who was the DIRECTOR of the damn game.  The director in videogames, like movies, is the most important person.  They're the one that runs everything and makes the important decisions.  Cuthbert was just a programmer for the original, who was working under, that's right, Eguchi and doing what Eguchi told him.

The only Star Fox that Cuthbert can truly say was his baby is Command, where he got to finally be the director and controlled what happened.  And we all know how Command turned out.

So what we have here, is an article where they're interviewing a guy who worked on the original Star Fox, and then got to direct what was arguably the worst Star Fox, but had no involvement in what generally considered the best Star Fox.  And yet, he's now considered the creator of the series and so his words are to be taken as fact, especially since he's bashing Nintendo with them?

Really, this interview deserves to be posted in the "Pathetic state of the gaming media" thread because of all the factual errors and the blatant misleading it does.

Edit: Oh look at that, G4 has just gone back and edited the article and now acknowledges that Cuthbert had nothing to do with 64.  They even apologize at the bottom now.

It strikes me as a musical based Wario Ware.

That's because the game is made by the same team at Nintendo that makes the Wario Ware games.

Are people really worried that the game won't be good?  I think they're more worried that it just won't hold up well for 10 hours and $50.

There are a lot of details that we don't know yet, but if there are only 16 fighters (like in Super Punch-Out!!) and you can beat it in a couple hours your first time people are going to feel gypped.

Well that will be those people's problem then.  Arcade style games like Punch-Out have to be short or else they become boring and repetitive.  Of course in order to add more value to them, this is why Arcade games on home consoles have multiple difficultly settings and different modes like Time Attack and others.

As long as Punch-Out contains different difficulties as well as varies game modes to play, then it'll easily have over 10 hours worth of gameplay.  And considering that Nintendo has recently said that the game has a lot of unlockables, it looks like Nintendo has made sure the game will have enough value for it's price.

Nah, this sort of infrastructure announcement is just what Nintendo normally does. Heck, didn't they reveal Phantom Hourglass and non-Nintendo platforms for VC at GDC, too?

Those reveals were for GDC 2006 though.  GDC 2007 and 2008 didn't have any major announcements and as a result people forgot that Nintendo does announce major things at GDC every once and awhile.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Virtual Console Arcade
« on: March 27, 2009, 11:53:26 AM »
Well considering that the TMNT Arcade game is already on XBLA, I'd imagine there's a good chance it'll eventually hit the Virtual Console.  The other license based one I'm not to sure but I'd imagine they have a better chance of appearing on the Virtual Console now then they do XBLA.

Getting the license to some of these old properties can already be hard enough in some cases, but on XBLA they then have to make the games to support HD and include online co-op.  I'd imagine all these factors can cost more time and money then some companies might want to do.  This might explain why it's been over 2 years since TMNT came out on XBLA, and yet no other license based games have come out since, not even it's sequel, Turtles in Time.

But on the Virtual Console Arcade, since Nintendo isn't forcing third parties to jump through hoops like Microsoft does, I'd imagine a company like Konami might have more incentive to try and get the license to some of their older properties again, since it'll be easier and cheaper to put these games on the Virtual Console after finally regaining the said license.

So wait, the VC arcade is available now?

According to several sources, yes it is.

This should make things very interesting in the future since Arcade games will be hitting the Virtual Console now.  And since Nintendo is allowing us to download games directly to SD cards, with the highest up to 32 gigs, the possibilities are now endless.

Kind of funny how everyone was just talking about the possibility of Arcade games hitting the Virtual Console earlier today and now Nintendo has just released a new Arcade section on the Virtual Console right NOW.

This should make things more interesting.

Everyone has to remember that the House of Dead series is a lot more popular in Europe then America.  Most of the sales for The House of the Dead 2/3 collection for the Wii came from Europe, and according to the European sales charts, Overkill is doing better at this point in it's life on the charts then 2/3 Collection did.

So even if it doesn't sell well in America, it doesn't matter since Europe is where the majority of The House of the Dead fanbase is and is where Sega should expect the most sales anyway.

Capcom takes a sh!t on consumers once again.

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/962/962318p1.html

Even though I don't care about multiplayer in a Resident Evil game, this is something that should be playable normally.  We should never have to pay for additional modes in games.  Especially when these modes are already in the damn game and all we're paying for is a key to unlock them.

The way Capcom is going, in 5 years from now I bet we'll have to pay money just to keep playing the games.

"Congratulations on beating Level 1, now pay $3 to move on to Level 2."

And they also need to get their acts together and either completely localize "Tatsunoko vs. Capcom" or make a new VS. game.

THEN they can die. :p

Capcom once again shows they still don't care about the Wii, nothing new to see here.  If it wasn't for the upcoming Monster Hunter 3, Capcom's Wii support would easily be right up there with Ubisoft as the cheapest and laziest.

Of course the only reason we're even getting Monster Hunter 3 in the first place is thanks to Iwata working out a deal and giving out moneyhats, something Nintendo rarely does.  So even in the case of Monster Hunter 3, it's more of Nintendo's doing then Capcom's.

How many time does it need to be said, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition has sold over 1.5 million copies, which is more then Umbrella Chronicles has sold, not to mention is the same as the 360 version of Dead Rising and very close to the 360 sales of Lost Planet.  And yet, still no traditional Resident Evil game for the Wii.

Of course considering how Resident Evil: 5 has pretty much killed the series by turning it into a Gear of War clone, maybe it's better we get this lightgun game since sadly, Umbrella Chronicles ended up feeling more like a survival horror game then Resident Evil 5 has.  :-\

If you read the "Black Knight" thread on the Nintendo Console forum you will see that the game is far more polished and enjoyable than "Secret Rings", and that title was already good to begin with.

While I wouldn't exactly call Secret Rings good, I wouldn't call it bad either.  The fact that like you said, Black Knight has better controls and is considered more polished makes someone like me who was in the middle about Secret Rings suddenly become more interested.  Since if Secret Rings had better controls and more polish I would have considered that game good then.

So yeah, in the end Matt's review is nothing more then a stupid rant about how he didn't like certain parts of the game so the entire game sucks.  Which is a terrible way to review games since it does nothing to inform the average reader.  And not to mention he didn't bother to even compare Black Knight to Secret Rings which is the only thing someone like me wanted to know since Black Knight is the SEQUEL to Secret Rings.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Do you think a Wii 2 will work?
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:42:36 PM »
As long as the Wii continues to sell like it has been, Nintendo has no need to release a new system.  Nintendo has never released a new system unless they truly needed to.  This is why the Gameboy was able to last for over 10 years, since they remained dominate in the handheld market during all that time.  Hell, even the DS is looking like it could end up having a 10 year life cycle the way it's going.

As long as the Wii remains as dominate as it does, then it's a very real possibility that it could end up living that long as well.  Plus as others have said, because of the already enormous cost of HD development on the 360/PS3, Microsoft and Sony don't really want to release a new system in the upcoming future either.  Especially in Sony's case since they can't really afford too.

So in the end, any Wii successor won't be showing up for a long time.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Madworld
« on: March 05, 2009, 09:36:13 PM »
Anyone that complains about Madworld being too short has obviously never played a beat-em-up in their life.  These types of games are best done as short experiences, or else they run the risk of getting too repetitive and boring after awhile.

Plus these types of games usually have higher difficulty settings and other unlockables that open up after you first beat them, which also adds to the overall length.  So even though the main game on Normal might take between 5-6 hours to beat the first time, the overall game could easily end up taking people around 10-20 hours to complete everything 100%.

I'm not worried. Its just that after hearing endless whining about Nintendo forcing motion controls without any other options I am surprised that classic controls are now an issue.

Actually I'm starting to think that a lot of the complainers are doing it just for the lulz.  I mean really, it seems that a lot of the people that complain are just looking for something to complain about just for the fun of it.

It's kind of like when you get together with friends, sometimes you'll intentionally be an assh*le, just to liven things up.  I get the feeling that a lot of the people who complain about stuff on the internet are really just like that.  Trying to liven things up, because it'd be rather boring if there was nothing to argue about.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Sonic & The Black Knight
« on: March 04, 2009, 10:52:39 AM »
The problem I have with Matt's review is he doesn't state if the game is better or worse then Secret Rings.  Yeah he says that Unleashed is a better game, but Black Knight isn't the sequel to Unleashed, it's the sequel to Secret Rings.  If the game is worse then Secret Rings, then he should state why it's worse.  Instead he doesn't even mention any difference in the 2 games, and just says the game sucks and that's it.

If your going to review a sequel to a game, say how it compares to the other.  If there's something Black Knight does that's better or worse then Secret Rings, then say it so people who might have liked or hated Secret Rings, can make a good informed decision.

I was one of the people who was on the fence when it came to Secret Rings.  There's was some things I liked about it, others I hated.  If Black Knight improves on the area's I hated, then I might purchase the game.  But if it failed to improve or made things even worse, then I'll pass.  This is what I wanted to know, and Matt failed to inform, which is the whole point of reviews in the first place.

Once again when I'm away from a computer for a day Nintendo announces something.

Anyway, it's nice to see Punch-Out has a release date, really locking forward to seeing how it turns out.  Of course I wonder why Nintendo hasn't released any screens of Excitebots yet.  I mean, usually when Nintendo announces a new game, they at least show screen shots right away.  To announce something new that will be out shortly and not show something with the announcement just seems like they either just forgot to sent out screens or NOA is trying to troll the internets.

Quote
Why it took them so long to localize it is beyond me.

Actually it's quite obvious why they're finally localizing the series, the latest Starfy game bombed last summer in Japan.  It also doesn't help that the last one before that, while not a bomb, failed to match the success of the GBA Starfy games.  What makes this even worse is the fact that the DS is selling much better then the GBA did, and that ever other Nintendo series in Japan has had better sales on the DS then they did on the GBA except Starfy.

In other words, the reason Nintendo is finally bringing the series over is because it's dieing in Japan, and Nintendo probably wants to see if maybe the American market can revitalize it.  This is why I imagine this announcement has more to do with NCL forcing NOA to localize the game in order to have a reason to keep one of their franchises alive, then NOA suddenly having a change of heart.

Considering how they've released 5 Starfy games in only 6 years, that shows how it's a rather important series to NCL.  One that they probably want to keep around for a few more years as well.

TalkBack / Re: Resident Evil 5 Skipped Wii Due to Developer Ambitions
« on: February 27, 2009, 12:51:58 PM »
The biggest problem I see with all of this is that games seem to be following a trend of trading off hours of gameplay for prettier graphics and overall less content.

If what I hear is correct, a basic walkthrough with RE5 is 7 hours. That's half of RE4's 14 hours.

I know that older gamers have less time, but a game that can be beaten in a day with little replay value? Really? And given the $60 pricetag, that's $8.50 an hour you're paying for entertainment. The game is begging to be rented instead of purchased.

And WHY is the game only 7 hours long? Because it costs so damn much to have HD textures on every model in the game and it's so time consuming, that's why.

Are we really willing to trade-off hours of gameplay for prettier graphics? I know I'm not, but it's a trend a lot of so-called AAA titles have been following, like Heavenly Sword, Lair and now RE5.

It's not worth it. Spending 7 hours in a pretty game with mediocre gameplay is not an ideal situation when we could've spent 14-20 hours in a game with average graphics and decent gameplay.

Don't worry, with the magic of DCL, RE5 will end up getting more hours of gameplay added to it.  The only problem is, be prepared to probably spend another $30 to get it.

After Megaman 9 and Street Fighter 4, Capcom has shown us that they have no shame when it comes to outright scamming the consumer.

I still don't understand why doesn't Square just put it on the PS3 all RPG attempts in the US didn't get them great sales.

It's because Microsoft pays Square millions of dollars to release these games on it's system and keep them exclusive either for a limited time or indefinately.  Actually, this is the reason why Microsoft even gets half of the support from Japanese developers that it does.

It's the classic Microsoft solution to everything.  If you have a problem, just keep buying your way out.

General Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV
« on: February 25, 2009, 10:41:45 PM »

Tiers don't seem to be a super big deal in this one and I think we'll see that reflected in the future, especially since so much of the gameplay in Street Fighter games is emergent. I seem to remember the Street Fighter guy-in-charge express an interest in balancing the game moreso via patches but not for like a year.

Just wait a few months.  Right now the tiers aren't that important because there's no clear tier list since the game is still very new and people are still learning about the characters.  Once the game ends up having a clear tier list, that's when all hell breaks lose.  This is the fate of all fighting games and it'll never change.

Even if Capcom does release patches, that'll just result in a new tier list being formed that everyone will flock to.
