But I have to wonder if the pandemic put a damper on remasters and, if so, are they still in the pipeline?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was always just a collection of 3 upscaled ports, but whoever leaked the information considers that remasters.  Some people's definitions of remaster is different then others, so the source might consider them remasters because they'll be in HD for the first time.

277
I'll have to buy this just for Bowser Fury.  Another set of challenging levels in 3D World is something I can't resist.

278
For a game that's a limited time release, not having Galaxy 2 is just dumb.  It'd be one thing if they were holding it back as DLC to charge for later, but if the collection is only a limited release, why not just go all the way, especially when it looks like everything is just up-scaled HD ports.

Right now I can play Galaxy 1 and 2, plus 64 on my Wii U.  Sunshine is the only one that makes this collection somewhat tempting, but since it looks to be a straight port, I really don't want to pay $60 to replay my least favorite 3D Mario game.  I'll wait until the games release to see if they did anything to try and fix some of the more broken parts of Sunshine.  If Sunshine is completely unchanged then I'm going to have to pass since the price tag is too high for what looks to be the bare minimum effort Nintendo put into it.

279
Well looks like I was able to add one more right at the buzzer.  After hooking my Wii U back up for the first time in 2 years to play both Dracula X titles, I thought it was the perfect time to get back into that systems backlog.  Well, since we had a new Paper Mario released less then 2 months ago, what better game to clear from my backlog then the previous installment, Color Splash.

I started playing the game last week and wasn't sure if I could make it by the end of the month.  Well at 11:30 P.M Central timezone, I managed to beat Paper Mario: Color Splash.  I bought this game back in 2017 so no loopholes here, this was a true backlog title.  Too tired to write much more but I really enjoyed this game.  Gameplay wise I found this to be the most creative Paper Mario, of course keep in mind I have not played Origami King yet.  The game was constantly changing things up and has some of the funniest moments to happen in a Mario game.

The only negative was the combat system which is still rather shallow and most of the time feels pointless.  Only a few of the boss fights actually felt somewhat engaging and they were mostly toward the end of the game.  I know that's a dealbreaker to many, but I found everything else in the game strong enough to keep me playing to the end.

280
If you get a game you've already played, you're getting it to re-play it, not playing it for the first time again. I dunno, to me this all just sounds like loophole jargon being used to inflate the numbers. Which I suppose is a very Khushenada thing to do after all, hee hee. And now I wait for him to go play every version of, say, Super Mario Bros. that's out there just so he can boost his count and overtake RABicle at the last moment.

So if we're allowed to use games we've beat before and use loopholes then Kush just gave me the win.  The Castlevania Collection contains the Japanese versions of all the games except Simons Quest, plus some of these games do have different characters, endings and routes to take.  So does that mean each time I beat a game with a different character, or achieve a new ending, I can count that as a new total as well?

Lets see here

Castlevania

Beaten once

Akumajō Dracula(Japanese version of Castlevania)

Beaten once

Castlevania 2: Simons Quest

Beaten once with the worst endings
Beaten once with the best ending

Castlevania: The Adventure

Beaten once, but save states were used because I couldn't stand the game by the end.

Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse

Beaten as Trevor alone
Beaten with Sypha as partner
Beaten with Alucard as partner

Akumajō Densetsu(Japanese version of Castlevania 3)

Beaten with Grant as partner
Beaten with Alucard as partner

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

Beaten once

Dracula Densetsu II(Japanese version of Belmonts Revenge)

Beaten once

Akumajō Dracula (Japanese version of Super Castlevania IV)

Beaten once on Normal
Beaten once on Hard

Castlevania: Bloodlines

Beaten once as John on Normal
Beaten once as John on Expert

Vampire Killer
(Japanese version of Bloodlines)

Beaten once as Eric on Normal
Beaten once as Eric on Expert

Kid Dracula

Beaten once

Dracula X: Rondo of Blood

Beaten once as Richter taking the top route stages
Beaten once as Richter using the lower route stages

Dracula X

Beaten once with the worst ending
Beaten once with Maria saved but not Annette
Beaten once with both Maria and Annette saved

So that's technically 24 games beaten, or 23 if The Adventure doesn't count because of save state use.  Hehe, I love those loopholes. ;D

Movies & TV / Re: Batman Movies

Wow, that trailer was great.  With all the superhero movies we have now a days, focusing on Batman being an actual detective for once is a great choice.  Hopefully the final movie will be similar to the tone of the trailer.

Alright I can finally join in.  So I spend the second half of July playing Bloodstained: Cursed of the Moon 2 and after I had finally completed every episode and got every ending, I felt like replaying all the Classic Castlevania's.  So I've spent this month playing the Castlevania Anniversary Collection on Switch.  Most of the games on the collection I've already beaten either years ago on the Wii Virtual Console or stuff like Bloodlines and Kid Dracula which I did last year when I first bought the collection.  But this time I played and beat every game on the collection including the ones I hadn't beaten before.  So I can cross 3 games off my backlog now.

Castlevania II: Simons Quest - This was actually the first Castlevania I ever played when I rented the game as a kid.  Didn't get far since I had no idea where to go.  Over the years I've seen enough Youtube video's talking about all the BS in the game, it's made me drag my feet.  Well I finally played the whole thing this month and you know, it wasn't that bad.  It helps that the most obtuse parts of the game have become so well known, there was only one part I ended up using a guide to find, but the rest went pretty smooth.  Even replayed it and got the best ending my second time, so I found some enjoyment in it.

Castlevania: The Adventure - I played this one for a little bit last year on the collection but stopped because it's just not fun to play.  I actually bought this game for the original GB back in the late 2000's and played on the Gamecube GBA player and stopped playing after a little while back then as well.  Seriously, this game is just a slog to play because your character moves so slow and you hardly move when you jump forward, which requires literally every jump in the game to be a pixel perfect jump.  The game also has really bad hit-box detection so you take a lot of cheap hits from things that sometimes look like they shouldn't have hit you.  I actually forced my self to finish it this time.

This is the one game in the collection I ended up using save-states to beat though since the last level had so much cheap BS that I just wanted to be done with this shitty game.  Yeah some might consider that not legit but when the game is terrible, I don't care.

Castelvania II: Belmonts Revenge - I had never played game before since I wanted to beat the first GB Castlevania before moving on to this one.  Well now that the first game was out of the way I could finally try the sequel out and damn, this game is awesome.  The developers literally fixed every issue The Adventure had and delivered some of the most creative level design in a Classic Castlevania.

The rest of the games on the collection I'll probably write up my thoughts in the "Last game you beat section" since I've already beaten them in the past so they wouldn't count as a backlog.  Of course since I was in the Classic Castlevania mood, after finishing the Anniversay Collection, I hooked my Wii U back up so I could play Rondo of Blood again.  After finishing Rondo of Blood, it caused me to finally play the SNES version of Rondo, which is just called Dracula X.  I went and bought it off the Wii U's eshop so I could finally experience this version of the game.  Played it for over 7 hours and beat it 3 different times and got each ending.

But technically Dracula X wouldn't count for this thread since I bought it new in order to finish my Classic Castlevania fest.  But I'd like to say it was always in my mental backlog since I planned on playing the game someday, but just never owned it yet. :D

283
And yesterday I finished off Kirby's Star Stacker from my 3DS VC. I beat all the Round Clear levels and unlocked the Insane level for Challenge and Time Attack to give Kirby a crown on the title screen. Set the high scores for those modes as well.

Excellent.  Nice to see more people experience the greatness that is Kirby's Star Stackers.

Is there much demand for it to be remade?  I figure it's too new still.  I don't think it can be remade without motion controls and we need time before there is nostalgia for that.

Wind Waker HD came out in 2013, over 10 years from the original release.  Twilight Princess came out early 2016, almost 10 years from the original.  This game comes out in 2021, it'll be about the same amount of time between the original release that Twilight Princess HD was.  So it's within a pretty similar timeframe to get remade that the two Gamecube Zelda's did.

I'd also imagine it's the perfect time to release Skyward Sword HD right before Breath of the Wild 2.  People will probably be more receptive to play a more linear dungeon focused Zelda, when they know the newest non-linear exploration focused title is right around the corner.  The original version of Skyward Sword was the end result of where Nintendo had started taking the series with Wind Waker.  People who didn't like the fact the series kept getting more linear and puzzle focused with each new installment had a reason to be burned out.  Now that Breath of the Wild has revitalized the series and brought in millions of new fans, people might be more open to what Skyward Sword was trying to do.

Also keep in mind Nintendo knows what the issue's with Skyward Sword are pretty well, so I imagine a remake will probably have more work put into it then Wind Waker and Twilight Princess did.  The previous most controversial 3D Zelda was Majora's Mask, and they put a lot more work in the 3DS remake of that game then Ocarina of Time 3D since Ocarina of Time was already the much more beloved game.  The 3DS version of Majora's Mask is much more player friendly then the original N64 and fixed a lot of the issues people had with the 3-Day time system of the original as well as a lot of other changes to make the game less frustrating.  I suspect a Skyward Sword HD will see similar levels of reworks to make it a more accessible game this time, especially in a post Breath of the Wild world.

285
Anyway, if they do remake it, I'm not sure how much they can fix the issues with it without overhauling so much of it.

The most consistently agreed issue with Skyward Sword was Fi's constant handholding and that's very easy to fix.  All they have to do is disable her so that she doesn't bother the player anymore during gameplay and that right there would be a huge positive across the board.

There's also several ways to streamline the game better.  They'll probably give Link a fast travel so he can instantly teleport to any bird statue now, unlike in the original where you have to go to the sky and fly to the area you want to go before choosing which bird statue you can go to.  So basically if you're in the desert and need to go back to the forest, you can now automatically teleport back to the forest instead of all the extra hassle the original did.

Some of the fetchquest can also be shorten or even cut.  A good example would be right when you're close to the 4th dungeon, the water dragon makes you go back to the 1st dungeon to get some water.  Something like this wouldn't be too hard to cut since there's no major cutscenes attached to it or new item to gain.

TalkBack / Re: The Timelessness of Metroid: Zero Mission
« on: August 13, 2020, 04:32:32 PM »
It's still a fantastic game but it's far from the pinnacle of 2D metroid that people made it out to be.

Much of the praise comes from the fact it's the only Metroid that was designed with speed running and sequence breaking in mind.  The final boss literally becomes harder if you get 100% items, which is one of the reason you get a different ending picture for completing Hard mode with 100% items in under 2 hours, because that final boss in Hard mode with 100% items is a lot harder then Normal under the same conditions.  Same with it being the only Metroid game to reward you for doing a minimalist run.  Under 15% completing in Normal and Hard give you 2 different ending pictures as well, with doing this challenge on Normal being hard, and on Hard mode this challenge is legit one of the hardest Nintendo related challenges they've ever put in a game.

It's a game where if you just play it normally it's pretty easy compared to other Metroid games, but if you want to 100% it, it becomes the hardest.  This is why it gets so much praise from Metroid fans because in many ways it feels like it was designed with the most hardcore fans in mind.

287
I still want to get my hands on Super Castlevania IV on WiiU but there's a chance it'll be a waste of money if it ends up on the Switch for free.

I mean if you're concerned about wasting money on Super Castlevania IV because it might show up on the Switch for free, why not just buy the Castlevania Anniversary Collection on Switch instead?  It's been on sale several times this last year for about $10, which is only $2 more then Super Castlevania IV by itself is on the Wii U.  You get the same game, plus 7 others for only $2 more.  Actually it's even more since the Anniversary Collection also has the Japanese versions for most of the games as well, which is a big deal for Castlevania 3 since the original version has higher music quality and a more fair difficulty in the second half.

Plus this way if Nintendo ever shuts down the SNES Online when they release a Switch successor, you'll still own the Anniversary Collection and won't have to worry about losing access to the games on it.

Since this year is the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros, and the rumors of the remasters and 3D World Deluxe all came in the Spring, I wouldn't be surprised if Odyssey 2 was originally suppose to be their big fall game.  The game released at the end of 2017 and never had any major DLC released, so a 3 year window would have been more then enough time to make a direct sequel.

Of course you do have to wonder if maybe Nintendo might still think the release of the game is possible?  I mean in the past some of their games like Galaxy 2 and even the first Odyssey were said to be almost done quite a while before release.  Galaxy 2 in particular they said could have been released at the end of 2009 but they didn't want it competing with NSMB Wii.  Tokyo EAD has been shown to be a very efficient developer and surprisingly fast while still maintaining high quality.

I wouldn't be surprised if the situation is they still hope Odyssey 2 can be out by November, but if it's unable to be ready in time, 3D World Deluxe and the remasters will be the backup.  So yeah, I'm guessing either Odyssey 2 will be ready for November and then 3D World Deluxe is pushed back to early 2021, or Odyssey 2 is delayed to March 2021 and 3D World Deluxe is given its spot this year.

Well by now the Switch has passed the NES. What hardware line is next to surpass in sales?

That'll be the 3DS at 75.87 million.  The way the systems selling it'll probably do that by the end of the year.

Those Animal Crossing sales are beyond insane.  I said back in April after the game sold over 12 million copies in a month that it should easily have the legs to pass 20 million.  I was expecting it to do that in the coming year or two.  Not in the very next quarter. :o

The way things are going 30 million is a pretty easy lock.  You don't sell 22 million copies in 3 months and then drop of the face of the earth.  I wouldn't be surprised if it hits that mark by the end of the year even.  Hell, after what it just did last quarter, it's might even do that before the end of the year.  Saying this game might even reach the 40 million mark is easily within the realm of possible depending on how the Switch continues to perform in the coming years.

It's really funny to think about how angry some people got when Isabelle was first revealed to be in Smash Bros Ultimate.  At the rate this series continues to grow, Isabelle is going to literally become the new face of Nintendo.

Covid really messed up Nintendo's release schedule.  The fact they're giving a port of a rather niche franchise a pretty important end of year slot, doesn't bode well for the holiday season.  I wouldn't be surprised if the rumored Mario 3D World Deluxe is going to be their big November game this year, along with the remasters of the other 3D Mario games.

I remember reports from the Spring talking about Japanese developers having a harder time with covid because they weren't as used to using software that lets them work from home compared to the West.  I know in the anime industry, there was a lot of shows that went on hiatus for a few months because of covid, so development for major games was more then likely the same.  Having 2-3 months of development suddenly halted, is going to put a huge wrench in what they were trying to do.  Stuff like Xenoblade DE and Paper Mario were probably mostly finished before lockdowns started so it was easier to still polish them up in time for release, but for something like Breath of the Wild 2 which probably still has major parts of the game that need to be completed, losing several months is huge.

Not saying Nintendo would have originally had Breath of the Wild 2 out this fall, but anything they originally had planned to come out between September to December has probably been delayed to 2021.  Unless it was something Pikmin 3 Deluxe which has been rumored to have been done for quite some time already.

Relaxing Music

Youtube Link

Yoshi's Wooly World is full of relaxing music.  Hard for me to pick, so I'll go with the last track of the game.  If you 100% the game you get one final level that is quite a bit more challenging then the rest.  Each section keeps building in challenge, but then when you finally reach the last section, there's nothing that can kill you.  It's just a short section with Yoshi and Poochy that has you walk to the finish.  This is the music that plays during this last section and it's such a nice song to make you reflex on the journey you've had throughout the game and how it's finally come to an end.  For such a relaxing game, I can't think of a better way to end it.

The overworld theme for the Kingdom of Zeal, Corridors of Time.  Such an amazing part of the game and the music just matches the setting, atmosphere and story of it so perfectly.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2

Well I'm not sure what to think so far.  Two years ago I praised the first one for being the remake of Castlevania 3 that IGA always wanted to make.  Now this game is a more of the same sequel with some new character added.  The new characters are really fun to control and each is quite different from the last.

So on paper I should be loving it.  The problem is this game fucking hates me and anybody I might have every known as well.  I'm sure it hates whoever is reading this as well.  The difficulty is just insane and not always in a good way.  I finished Episode 1, and those last few stages were just bullshit.  The game is obsessed with literally putting you in situations where you're next to a bottomless bit, with an enemy shooting projectiles at you, and a flying enemy swooping down at the same time.  Some sections literally require you to keep track of enemies coming from both sides and the top, and if you don't have the right character and sub weapon equipped on that character you're fucked.

I have to wonder if because some complained that Casual mode was too easy in the previous game, Inti Create went our of their way to make it way more challenging in this game which as a result turns Veteran mode which I prefer to play into cheap BS mode.  Of course, I have to imagine some of these area's are just as cheap in Casual since some of the level design feels like Inti was trying to create another Mega Man Zero or Gunvolt game, and didn't realize the jumping mechanics of classic Castlevania do not fit that type of level design.

Oh well, I do like a good challenge and maybe after completing the later episodes I might appreciate the game in the end but right now a lot of the challenge feels more on the cheap side then fair, which is kind of disappointing since the original did a great job of being very accessible with it's regular mode while offering a good challenge with stuff like doing a solo Zangetsu run that was hard but still fair.  This game literally punches you in the face and steals your car by the halfway point of what should be the easiest part.  It makes me fear what's in store for me in the later Episodes.

294
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (Switch)

As a fan of the series I finally played the newest installment, which funny enough started development as an indie homage before eventually being turned into the real thing.  The developers are huge fans of the series and it certainly shows since it's filled with references and callbacks.  They certainly wanted to leave their own mark on the series, with this game easily being the largest installment, taking me over 20 hours to complete and 100%.

Of course I do think they kind of over did it at times.  For starters the game starts you as a human before turning you into a Pigman, within the first 10-15 minutes.  The Pig has the worst combat ability and is the least fun character to play as.  You then play as the pig for the next several hours, mostly using his abilities for puzzles which some are pretty fun, but this whole section shouldn't have been as long as it was.  Especially when the Pig transformation ends up being pretty worthless during the second half of the game, so it's like, why put so much attention on this things that just drags out the beginning if it's not even going to be that important in the end?

The second transformation turns you into a Snake and that's when things get better since the Snake can crawl on walls and spit venom.  This vastly improves the quality of puzzles and gameplay for the next section.  After that you got the Toad Man transformation and can finally use your sword again.  Now combat is fun again, and the Toad's main ability involving his tongue opens up even more creative puzzles.  The next section is easily the most polished because of that and it's no surprise is the most universally loved part of the game.

The next section though after you get the Lion Man starts to feel kind of rough.  The game suddenly gets obsessed with trail and error puzzles, with pretty cheap enemy placements at time as well.  Now I didn't mind it as much since the game is very generous with checkpoints so it's not like you lose a ton of progress.  But still, it's annoying to get cheap shot by offscreen enemies or suddenly die because of a moving platform you had less then a second to react to.

The rest of the game is more or less like this.  Some really great puzzles and idea's followed by some not so great ones.  Like there's a shooting section that's clearly inspired by Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, but man does your character have a ridiculously big hit box.  Some parts get a ton of projectiles on screen and it's almost impossible to avoid getting hit at times.  Of course once again the game is pretty generous with checkpoints, so even when I died during this section it wasn't that big a loss but it does make a lot of the actions sections feel almost pointless since it's kind of easy to just tank your way through to the next checkpoint and hardly feels like your skills are even being tested.

There is a haunted mansion toward the end though which is easily my favorite part of the game.  It feels like a giant Zelda dungeon with one giant puzzle that connected to a ton of smaller ones.  I personally loved it but I've seen quite a few online that hated this section.  Some of the puzzles are pretty obtuse, which I didn't mind but can certainly see why others would.  I did have a problem with the cheap ghost enemies that can shoot you from offscreen, which killed me quite a few times.  Once again the game has a ton of check points so it was still easy for me to get back to were I was to complete the puzzles, but for the love of ****, stop putting in cheap enemies if they don't even need to be there.

This also brings up another thing that drove me crazy.  The game has some great bosses that are creative and challenging, but if you die twice, on the third try the game will constantly give you hearts throughout the fight.  They don't even ask you if you want help or give an option like the Super Guide, they just automatically start giving you hearts throughout the fight.  I tried looking in options if there's a way to turn it off and didn't see one either.  Seriously, it's like the developers are saying if you die twice to a boss you're not good enough and must need some help.  Just seems kind of condescending to me, which is rather weird since they have no problem putting in some rather obtuse puzzles that you need to do before reaching the bosses and they give you no hints on those.  So they're going to make it hard to get to the boss but once you're at the boss they will make it easier whether you want it or not?  Come on guys, be a little more consistence in the design of the game.

This leads me to the ending which was then just a little anti-climatic since you gain an ability is great to use and the final area starts with some great obstacles and fights that use it, but then it ends up being pretty short.  The final boss also ends up being one of the easiest in the game, which is kind of disappointing since previous Wonder Boy games usually go all out in their final boss fights.

Overall though I still had a good time with it.  There's a lot of great puzzles, which the classic Zelda fan in me loved.  The game needed some better polish though.  The developers where clearly huge fans and had a ton of idea's but probably should have cut a few of them to make sure the remaining ones were more refined.

Oh and I can't forget about the music.  They got Yuzo Koshiro, Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru Yamane, Keiki Kobayashi, and Takeshi Yanagawa all to contribute.  The results are nothing short of spectacular.  Here's a few tracks from just the early parts of the game.

Title Theme
Fields
Misty Woods
Boss Battle  (My personal favorite)

To me the bigger news is getting a classic EA game on the service.  Even during the Wii's prime, I don't remember anything from EA being but on the Virtual Console.  Now the quality of said game is very debatable, its still nice to see Nintendo continues to get deep for picks.

Really shows that as long as there's no license issues, a lot of classic obscure titles might have a chance.

296
For console exclusive here's something from Sin and Punishment.

Youtube Link

From my favorite level in the original.  Going from escaping a ship to suddenly taking on an entire fleet of them was certainly a crazy moment.  Got to love how Treasure would escalate their games.

297
The fact that the FGC is still seen as a niche thing by the mainstream, means it's gotten by pretty much unregulated for way too long.  In the case of Smash Bros there was literally a house where minors with no supervision would stay with adults, in the presence of alcohol.  Seriously, that's something that should have been a major redflag to everyone.

Of course it doesn't help when many at the top are being busted for engaging in this activity as well.  It's not just a cover up, they had a sexual predator club going on.  I mean, this **** was an open secret for years by the looks of things.

If the FGC want to have any future outside of local events, they really need to completely redo how they operate.  For one, anyone under the age of 18 shouldn't be allowed at an event unless they have a parental guardian.  The fact that wasn't a rule is just insane.

298
For the 2nd Day opening stage music, the first song that comes to my mind is Departure from Mega Man Zero 2.

Youtube link

The first Mega Man Zero was a decent game but the soundtrack wasn't that impressive to me.  The sequel on the other hand was a huge improvement in every way, especially the music.  That first level of MMZ 2 does an amazing job at getting you pump for the rest of the game and the music does a perfect job of matching the atmosphere and gameplay.

For Day 3's 8-bit music, since I'm on the subject of Mega Man, here's an underrated track from the Classic series.

Youtube link

It's the second Wily Fortress song for Mega Man 4.  I think it's one of the better Wily themes but I don't see it talked about as much.

This series is so difficult to keep track of with its naming. Is this the good recent one, or was that the Dragon's Trap remake?

This is the newest one which is called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.  Originally it was going to be an indie homage to the series but they managed to get in contact with the original creator and it became a canon installment to the series.  I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend playing if you're a fan of the series, I'll write a more indepth thoughts in the "last game you beat thread" in the near future.

299
Here's one I recently heard while going through my backlog during quarantine.  From Monster Boy and the Curse Kingdom, the most recent installment in the Wonder Boy series.

for BnM

I heard they managed to get some famous composers but I was not expecting to be blown away like I was.  Easily one of the best titles themes I've ever heard.  The rest of the soundtrack is just as incredible.

I usually have 2 types of school dreams, High School and College.

Most of my College dreams usually take place at the end of the semester and I have a big project I haven't even done yet.  That's because I was a huge procrastinator that pretty much always got the big project done literally the day before they were do, usually staying up late to do so.

My High Schools dreams involve me usually having superpowers like flight, super strength and telekinesis.  I usually use these powers to show off to my classmates.  These dreams also involve me talking to people I haven't seen in over a decade now about current events.  Some times it's like time travel where I'm telling them what will happen in the future while other times, it's the current year and we all just so happen to be in High School again.

It's always interesting how the College dreams are usually so realistic and stressful, while the High School dreams are so fantastical and fun.  Probably has to do with the fact in High School I had friends that we'd play videogames and watch anime after school, and talk about that kind of stuff while in school.  In College I never really made any close friends, so my memories for that are more about the work I did, while High School was more about the fun after school.  That would certainly explain the dreams involving them are so different.
