Nintendo Gaming / RE: Revolution no more-Nintendo Wii
« on: April 27, 2006, 12:32:17 PM »
It's a strange feeling.  I got over my total fanboy phase a long, long time ago, but chose to never give up all of my irrational love of Nintendo.  I liked the feeling of slipping back into fanboy mode occasionally.  TGS was great fun for me.  I did it a bit recently when Red Steel was unveiled.  I'm looking forward to doing it during E3, too.

However, when not in fanboy mode, I could examine all sides of an issue and develop my own opinion.  Usually I end up just thinking, "That would have been nice, but this is okay.  It's really no big deal."  Take the recently leaked specs, for example.  It would be nice if they were better, but they're okay.  The controller has me intrigued enough already.  High defintion would be nice, but I don't have an HDTV or plans to buy one anytime soon.  I might have bought one if Nintendo supported it, so I guess they really saved me money.  How nice.

Now, for the first time ever, I find myself actually disliking something Nintendo has done.  Hate is too strong a term, but most of Nintendo's actions I've either liked, loved, or felt indifferent about.  What's especially odd is how polarizing this case is.  I feel myself being dragged further into the negative camp by all the happy-go-lucky unqualified (see definition 2) praise and acceptance.

As an aside, the only thing more foolish than liking something because other people don't like it is liking something because other people do like it.

Since emotions are starting to run high in here, I'll point out that the above comment is not targeted at anyone in particular, and is meant to serve as a reminder to all of us (including myself as demonstrated above) to not split up into two opposing camps.  That has already begun to happen, and I would like things to stay respectful.

But maybe you do need to be a marketing genius to realize it's brilliant. That make sense?

Oh, now I get it.  By nongamers, they mean marketing geniuses only.  If that's their target market, then the name really is brilliant.  Good thing they're not targetting anyone else, or it would seem like a poor choice.

I think every last one of you is forgetting how the reaction to the controller was exactly the same as this. The same people were complaining about it, the same people thought it was a terrible idea and Nintendo would bomb
Um, no.  Actually, I for one loved the controller from the beginning, and I think Wii is a bad name (just read the last part of that sentence out loud for proof).  It's not just chronic naysayers complaining.

I submitted a comment.  I wasn't negative about it.  I just pointed out that I thought it was cumbersome to use the name in conversation.  Everyone who submits a comment should avoid insults and obscenity.  Their customer reps are going to be overwhelmed now, and civility will go a long way toward getting your message heard.

Well this is odd.  Turns out they can't even get wii.com because it's owned by Willamette Industries, Inc.  And wii.net is locked.

Rats.  You beat me to it.  I could learn to accept this name, but I'm hopeful that a large, sudden, and very negative backlash will convince them to change it.  As I recall, NOA stood up to NCL when they wanted to call the Dolphin "Starcube."  I have to wonder if they put up a fight this time.

TalkBack / RE: Revolution Name Announced!
« on: April 27, 2006, 07:51:43 AM »
Yay!  A name lots of people will hate so I can say I like it and feel counterculture and superior!

Seriously, though.  I see the cleverness.  It takes a little too much effort to explain the cleverness, though.  Marketingwise, a simple "cool" name is probably easier to work with.  This is nothing like what I expected.

Anyone who says, "Oh, there wouldn't have been more characters/levels/balance if they hadn't pissed money away on developing the trophies." is a FOOL who clearly doesn't understand economics. With the time and money saved by not having the artists make these idiotic little trophies, I'm more than willing to bet we could have at LEAST given Ganondorf his own moveset, and that ALONE would have been worth scrapping the trophies.

Do you think the programmers and level designers spent even one moment just twiddling their thumbs?  They worked full time, probably crunch time, to get the game ready.  I know the old saying "time is money," but freeing up money in the budget DOES NOT free up extra time.  It may allow the hiring of additional programmers, but that does not always (or even usually) make work faster, as anyone in the business world will attest.  You'd have to keep the artists on the payroll anyway to animate all those new moves.

I think the jumping relates to how you move the world around, not the monkey ball.  If the ground suddenly jerked up under you, you'd be thrown into the air.  Sine the rev controller represents the level itself, this scheme makes that much more workable than it would have been before.

What's up with every game having stupid subtitles these days though?

Clearly this title is evidence against the Revolution being named the Nintendo RS, as that would have required Sega to name this game Rhesus Sphere*.

I think we were all expecting this game, but it's nice to have it confirmed.  I may find it more playable than I did Super Monkey Ball 1, since I never could get the hang of moving the world instead of the monkey with the analog stick.

(*not to be confused with the rhesusphere, the layer of the atmosphere made entirely of monkeys.)

Oh, and I'm glad someone mentioned that Purple is color of Royalty. So true because Nintendo is the King. But not that Indigo color. A deep, dark, luschious, purple.
Uh oh!  I've caught Ceric disease!  j/k  I know how it is.

Truthfully, royal purple is kind of reddish.  Also, it comes from snail snot.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:No summer launch
« on: April 25, 2006, 01:36:23 PM »
I don't disagree that the DS launch sucked.  I disagree with the implication that it could have been saved by a difference of 12 days, as this sentence appeared to suggest:
Quote

The DS launch sucked because it launched in North America first and none of the good games were ready because the Japanese devs, including Nintendo themselves, were focusing on the later Japan launch.
The NA DS launch would have sucked if it had happened 12 days after the Japanese launch, too.  That's why I went off about how long it would have taken.  I'm prepared to chalk this up to a communication breakdown.

It can affect translation though.
Two weeks (rounding up) would not have been enough time to localize a game, manufacture a few tens of thousands of copies, ship them overseas, and distribute them to retailers across the continent.  For the Japanese launch titles to have launched with the DS in the U.S., it would have had to launch in spring.

The DS launched in Japan less than two weeks later.  That's not enough time to have made a difference in the development of any game.

TalkBack / RE: Square Enix Announces 2006 Lineup
« on: April 25, 2006, 10:31:53 AM »
I played FF3 for a little while on an emulator.  There's a patch available for the rom with a fan translation, so I decided to try it out the only way I could.  I enjoyed it at first.  It introduced the job system.  The four characters are completely blank slates that you are able to develop however you want, for the most part.  I reached a point at which I was apparently required to turn everyone into dragoons in order to progress.  There was a tower full of bird monsters that were way too strong for me to fight normally, but were weak against jumping.  However, even with that ability, if a character was on the ground during a monster's turn, he'd be killed instantly.  I grew tired of it at that point and never went back.

I can believe that the code is impossible to decypher.  The overworld had some interesting differences from the previous games (that might be spoilers if I went into them here), and it was far above its predecessors graphically.

I've never played NiGHTS, and, aside from the unusual capitalization, I don't know anything about it.  Lots of people praise it, so could someone explain what exactly the game is about before a mod locks this thread?

I'd be happy to disparage the intellect of WalMart shoppers, but that's not the point.  You're discounting (pun delightfully intended) impulse sales, which are greatly affected by the placement of products, not to mention far more likely for the cheaper GBA games.  Quite simply, not everyone walks into a WalMart planning to buy a particular game.

Also, purple has been Nintendo's favorite color for a long time now, at least as far back as the SNES.  It's also the color of royalty.

Some microphone commands are also somewhat obsolete.

I don't know what that means in this context.  Could you expound?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The New Castlevania Art Style
« on: April 21, 2006, 01:16:49 PM »
Hmm.  That is a bit different from the generic anime look of Dawn of Sorrow.  It looks kind of Yu-Gi-Oh-ish, with a dash of Kim Possible, but while still trying to look like standard anime fare.  I like that it's an attempt to be different.  I'm not a big fan of the well-loved older style, either.  However, the art on the box doesn't affect the games, and I've never really cared too much one way or the other.

I approve.  Was this thing actually sanctioned by Nintendo?  I've never seen one before, but the racetrack isn't something a hobbyist would likely put on it.

I'd like The Wizard on DVD, too!  Unless they changed Mario into a robot in that movie.

Of course he's been done.  It's scrambling up the building to knock him off that would be different.  I was trying to say that I still want the new takes on old fashioned platforming stages.  Otherwise it's Boss Rush mode, not Adventure mode (not that there's anything wrong with Boss Rush mode).  Also, with few exceptions, I'd prefer to have all the bosses as playable characters.  Kraid is one of the exceptions.

I like the Pokemon trainer idea.  They'd have to dip into the show to give one a readily recognizable personality, though, and I don't know how people would react to that.  It would certainly be hilarious (and annoying) to hear "Team Rocket's blasting off agaaaaaain!" every time you Star KOed them.
