I know that it was a game that severely needed a save system of some sort.  I never did get very far, and it was such a pain to have to work through the puzzles I'd already solved every time that I gave up very quickly.  It was fun, though.

I just found out and rushed here to see if anyone had posted it.  This has made me very happy.  Funny I didn't notice it here sooner, though.

Lucas is a total dick to be putting the new cuts on the DVDs as well. I figured he would just make all the fans double dip and have to buy both versions but he's being an even bigger prick by making their first purchase redundant.
Well, at least those of us who waited are actually less screwed, not that I ever wanted to buy the new versions at all.  I, too, thought this would have to wait until after he died, but I guess even billionaires can be swayed by greed.

I was just looking at a list of old Nintendo games, pondering which ones could be improved by the remote, when I found Mario and Wario.  I had forgotten all about this game.  It's essentially a puzzle game in the same vein as Lemmings, only instead of a horde of mindless critters, you guide a blinded Mario.  It was played using the SNES mouse, with which you controlled a fairy who interacted with elements in the environment.

Now imagine that instead of a point and click interface, you actually used the remote to affect things more directly.  For example, you might have to turn a crank to raise a bridge, or use a rope and pulley to lift something, or cut a rope to drop something, or fan a fire to burn something, or get Mario to hit a switch at the same time you do.  What you could do would depend on what tools were available to you in a given level.

Who'd develop it?  Well, Game Freak did the original, so they might as well do this one.  They've shown that they still have what it takes to develop non-pokemon games with Drill Dozer.

2d or 3d?  I'm not sure.  guiding Mario through a 3d environment without being able to control him directly could be cumbersome, but puzzles using the remote would probably be better in 3d.  I'll say 3d, with set paths for Mario to follow so you don't have to worry about getting him lined up just right to not walk off the side of a bridge.

The only problem is that I don't really expect an announcement at E3, or a return of this game ever, for that matter, but you got me thinking.

Not that I'm interested in a juggling game, but you can't do that trick where you and a partner toss a dozen or so knives to each other while some terrified audience member stands between you when you're by yourself.  A game could simulate your partner and the terrified audience member.  It could also let you juggle with a partner online.  It might be a fun minigame.

Or the end of the wiimote could have a sensor that measures the size of your TV automatically (basically detecting brightness and using some image edge enhancement type calculations) and it's placement relative to the position of the wiimote in 3d space.

Coincidentally, that's something I was just about to posit here.  It seems unlikely, but not impossible.

An inch of movement is an inch of movement.  The size of the TV would only matter if the remote was being used as a pointer.  You wouldn't have to move any more to control your jetpack in Pilotwings on a 100" screen than you would on a 20" screen, but you might get quite a workout in Red Steel.

Pikmin isn't about gardening.  It's about controlling an army of ant-carrots in a battle against time and ant-carrot-ivores.  It was inspired by a garden, but that doesn't mean it's a game for gardeners.  Considering how much I liked Pikmin, yes, I'd say Miyamoto made it for me.

How 'bout Iron Chef: The Game?  You get a random ingredient sprung on you, then a set time limit to create a certain number of dishes.  Then the game could use its massive database of ingredients and cooking techniques to calculate flavors, textures, and appearance, compare that to people's preferences (perhaps even the preferences of a large variety of AI judges), and give you a score.  Then if you got a higher score than the AI Iron Chef, you would win the people's ovation and fame forever.

I've been wondering if the bar even has to be by the TV.  Even with the sensors surrounding the TV, the system still needs some way to know where the screen is in relation to them.  Unless the sensor bar has to be placed at the bottom corners of the screen exactly, which is unlikely if it's a solid bar instead of two separate units as originally shown, then a one-time calibration in the system menu would seem to be necessary.  It would be as simple as touching the remote to the screen's corners and pusing a button, and would only have to be repeated if the bar or TV moved.  To make moving the bar less likely, it might be a good idea to put it somewhere where it wouldn't be nudged accidentally, which wouldn't be right next to the TV.  Attaching it to the wall would be more foolproof, or it could at least be put behind the TV with the dust bunnies.  Since it's presumably used to triangulate/trilaterate the remote's relative position to the sensor bar, it could be anywhere within range, in any orientation, and the math could be done to figure out the remote's relative position to the TV just as easily.  It might affect accuracy a little, especially if it were in line with the remote.

I haven't done the math to see exactly how possible all this is, but it seems like there are enough points for 3D positional calculations.  Points A and B are in the sensor bar, and because it's one piece, they are a known distance from each other.  Points C, D, and E are in the remote, and likewise a known distance from each other.  We can use the timing of radio waves to get the distance from the points in the remote to the points in the sensor bar, which should be enough information to calculate the exact position of the remote (including rotation if the points in the remote form a triangle) relative to the sensor bar.

Does anybody see a problem with this?

It's Rayman's Bad Fur Day!

Nothing too surprising, though I guess it's kind of new to play an assassin during the crusades.  I wonder if getting hopped up on hashish will affect the gameplay.

Here's hoping that Free Radical game isn't just for consoles that have a 3 in them.  I'd like to try a TimeSplitters game with the nunchaku.

Ian:  Marketers will use any minor tweak of language to claim to be first at something.  They're probably happy to use the FPA description for Metroid.  Either that or they're assuming Retro is recycling some of the old Gamecube code (which they probably are; no sense wasting all that effort), so it's the "ground up" phrase that makes them "first."

Dear Amazon.com Customer,

We've noticed that customers who have purchased Mario Superstar Baseball
are also interested in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the
GameCube. For this reason, you might like to know that The Legend of
Zelda: Twilight Princess will be released on May 15, 2006. You can
pre-order your copy by following the link below.

Of course it's not true.  I'm guessing the placeholder date in their database is May 15, and now that it's May, their automatic email system sent out this notice to anyone it figured might be interested.  I wonder what kind of feedback Amazon will get if a lot of people believe them and get disappointed.

Dr. Mario Virus – Attaches a virus to your opponent. This causes his screen to blur and him to slow down. The virus can be passed on if the infected kart bumps into another kart.

Oh, that's good.  I like that.  How do you target someone with it?  Do you leave a capsule on the track for someone to run into?  I nominate that and Metal Cap (or Mushroom, if they must) for the next Mario Kart console game.

I haven't seen Dodgeball or Wedding Crashers, but I know it's in Family Guy.  That's the same episode in which Peter learns an important life lesson about electric pencil sharpeners.

Back on topic, is there any tidbit about what the 2nd Retro game could be?  They had several projects that got canceled to make Metroid Prime, including an RPG, I think.  I'd like to see what kind of RPG they'd make.

How 'bout the Nii?  N for Nintendo, same double i symbolism, sounds like knee, which is perhaps the least sexual body part.  They can use the same logo, too.  Just pick up the i on the end and use it to chop off the W's arm (and then, if you've already made the Monty Python reference, it could claim it was only a flesh wound).

I'll say again that my objection to the name is not based on love for the name Revolution, which I long ago accepted would not be the final name.  The codename is never the final name.  Everyone who does prefer Revolution can take comfort that the model number will be REV-001, at least.

31 Flavas:  I for one never thought the PSP would be able to beat the DS.  I'm amazed that it's done so well.  Also, I don't recall the people claiming otherwise basing their opinions on the name, but on the power of the hardware.  This isn't the same.

Clearly they don't understand it, or they wouldn't be calling accellerometers gyroscopes.

One thing about the controls seems unclear.  In one quote, he says you point at the intended receiver, and in another, he says you hold down the button for that receiver.  The first way sounds like a better way to me, but if it can't tell which receiver you're aiming at by the angle of the throwing motion, then pointing at him and then throwing might be too slow, and the buttons would work better.  I wish IGN had asked for clarification when he contradicted himself there.

In light of recent events, and after much thought, I think the following announcement would cause a rant of truly epic proportions:

Major third party publishers have begun to announce the cancellation of support for Nintendo's next generation console.  When asked, they universally claimed it was because of the official name change.  "We just can't publish an M- or even T-rated game on something called a Wii," said one anonymous source.  That sentiment was shared by others as well, such as the developer who claimed, "Nintendo is obviously aiming for a different target market than we know how to serve.  What that target is, I can't say."  When asked for comment, a Nintendo representative stated, "Wii understand that Wii is not for everyone.  Wii have a assembled a Dream Team of developers dedicated to providing innovative and fun ways to play with Wii's incredible new features."

Regarding Siemens:  First of all, it's a surname.  Second, nobody says "semens" when talking about semen, so it's not a complete homonym.  Third, if they ever did have to cross that hurdle, they did it over 100 years before I was born.  The company is older than my great-grandfather would be if he were alive today.

Google is a better comparison, but I still think it fails.  Google is a homonym of googol, which means 10^100.  The name connotes bigness, which suggests success.  Also, as a mathematical term, it's suited to the very nerdy and scientific business of search engines.

Wii, on the other hand, is a homonym of we, which is the first person plural pronoun.  It is clumsy to use it as a noun in speech.  I cringe every time I have to say "Wii is" because it feels like "we is."  We is not comfortable sounding like a dumb hick.  We's accent does that already even without bad grammar.

What really flabbergasts me though is that Nintendo is fully aware of the problems with the name, but went ahead with it anyway.  A good name doesn't have to mean anything, really, but Nintendo stuffed this one with so much meaning that it doesn't make sense without its accompanying speech.  I don't want them to change it back to Revolution.  I never expected that to be the final name.  I really wish they would come up with something better, though.

I don't like the logo, either.  It's bland and generic.  Like the name itself, it doesn't stand on its own without an explanation.  The ad campaign shouldn't have to waste time explaining what the name and logo mean.

For the record, I don't dislike the name because it sounds like pee.  The first thing I thought of was "wee little man," actually.  I've tried talking about it, and it just feels wrong.  The juvenile humor can't be staved off regardless (although this name is practically inviting it).  It isn't immediately obvious how to pronounce the name.  I read some of the comments on Slashdot, and half of them thought it was pronounced "why" at first.  That's actually a pretty big flaw in the idea that it can be pronounced in any language, since in English at least the letter i is not pronounced "ee" most of the time.

Nintendo packed the name with symbolism, but it isn't immediately clear what that symbolism is.  The ad campaign shouldn't have to waste time explaining the name.  It should explain why you should want the product.  It is simply a bad name all around.
