I this forum.

I'm pretty sure Gunpei Yokoi invented the D-pad as we know it, but most of Nintendo's control innovations really are examples of applying existing technology to games.  That doesn't make it any less innovative, but it does mean Nintendo doesn't have as much control over the patents as they'd need to lock out the competition.

No way.  That tree has been substantially weakened structurally.  Even if it could survive the trauma, which is unlikely, there's now a higher risk of it falling down.

Oh man, I went to college with a guy whose devotion to Sailor Moon was downright creepy.  He was also obsessed with some Olympic gymnast.  Now that I think about it, he'd probably like all this loli stuff a lot, too.

I'll n+1 FLCL, too, but only if you have some knowledge of the various other works it references.  I'm sure I didn't get everything out of it, although I was very glad that I had watched enough Lupin III to get the boxing glove thing.  That whole scene would have seemed completely random otherwise.

The subtitle for this story should have been "Are you a bloody enough wolf to rescue the president?"

General Gaming / RE: Microsoft showing their true colors once again.
« on: June 19, 2007, 07:10:26 AM »
The real story isn't quite as stupid-sounding.  This money is an advance payment.  It comes out of the revenue Take-Two would normally expect to get from sales of the downloadable content.  It's still an oversized moneyhat, but it's not as if Microsoft doesn't expect to get the money back at all.

That's a cool ad, but "Not all images shown are from gameplay."

That's the first time I've ever heard that song not performed by the Chipmunks, incidentally.

Then perhaps Nintendo is Oprahfying video games.  Or some other icon of mainstreamness.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Do you regret getting RE 4 on Cube?
« on: June 18, 2007, 04:18:13 AM »
I don't generally like scary games, but all the praise for RE4 had me curious, so I finally bought it for GC when I saw it online at a decent discount.  I had 30 days to return it if I changed my mind.  The rumors about the Wii edition hit on day 31.  Yes, I regret that purchase.

I still haven't decided what to do.  I still haven't opened it.  I'm probably going to give it to GameStop for whatever pittance I can get in return just to get it out of my sight.

When they send you a bill for removing the tree, send them a bill for the firewood.

If the game was canceled it's most likely just because it wasn't turning out any good. Just like Raven Blade probably wasn't.
But for whatever reason when a game like this is canceled there are always people who suddenly believe it was to be the greatest masterpiece of our time that we were cruelly denied. If the game is all that great it will be released. If not then we know we're not missing much.

Wasn't Raven Blade canceled because Metroid Prime wasn't turning out any good?

It's not weirdly translated.  The text on the site just has a weird flow in general, at least to my ears.  Non-native speakers use idioms like "into the mix" incorrectly often enough that I didn't want to take it at face value.  Even people who speak English as their first or only language regularly misuse figures of speech.  Feel free to be nit-picky about what I said all you want, though.  I'm just surprised no one else seems to care that Pikachu is surfing a crate downhill into Wario's face.

It's implied in the kind of weird, translated English that's easy to misinterpret, so I went to the pictures instead.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The DS *could* have an analog stick added
« on: June 14, 2007, 05:58:22 AM »
I suppose it's technically possible, but it wouldn't be terribly convenient.  You'd lose a lot of the benefits of the DS's compact design.  There's also the usual peripheral dilemma, of course, of no games being developed for it because not everyone has it.  I really don't think analog sticks are the best way to handle analog control on a handheld, anyway.  I'm not sure what the best way is, but we need a new paradigm.  We need something compact, resilient, and just as effective.

The touch screen doesn't work primarily for two reasons.  First of all, it's not in a good position for your thumbs.  Second, it has none of the tactile feedback that an analog stick has.

The PSP's analog control gets criticized a lot, but I haven't actually used it, so I don't know what lessons to take away from it.

My favorite idea so far is something that resembles the NES Max D-pad, but is self-centering and, obviously, an analog control instead of a D-pad.  I just can't figure out exactly how to make it work.  My second favorite idea, and one that could have worked on the DS, is similar to some PC game pads I've seen that have a stick you can screw into the center of the D-pad to make a sort of digital joystick.  Make it a pressure sensitive D-pad and have the stylus double as the stick, and you've got something like an analog stick that would have worked well for the DS.  It would certainly be compact and portable (you have to carry around a stylus with the DS already), but it wouldn't be quite as good as a real analog stick.

2666
It looks like Pikachu is standing on a crate, which has slid downhill and hit Wario without breaking.  That's new.  Also, it looks like there are casters on the crate that's "sliding," but not on the crates in other pictures.  I take it this means that there are two kinds of crates, either with or without wheels.

2667
I don't mind the boring grey at all.  In fact, if you change it, please use forum software that lets me customize its appearance.  Boring is better than eye-bleedingly garish or low contrast, like all the "cool" sites.

2668
That's just some Japanese guy in a suit, like Godzilla or Ken Kutaragi.

It has the best soundtrack of any movie ever made.  I recommend turning the volume up to eleven and singing along with the hair metal version of the theme song.

So, UncleBob, do you choose who gets the wiimail message, or does it automatically go out to all your friends?

Therefore you could not have outrun Caliban.  And I don't dance (too fat and lazy).  Nothing about this story makes any sense.

My mom made it a few times.  I question the authenticity, however.

2673
I know Caliban's "nards" must have been slowing him down, but how can you be running away slowly way too fast for someone to catch you?

2674
Be it running through an authentic level of that game. - Done
Going through a turn based Smash Bros. Battle in a traditional RPG style. - No way
Facing a giant Alien Boss. - Done
Be forced to do some crazy Micro Games to advance. - Hell no
Solve typical Puzzles from the game. - No
Escape a Maze. - ...Maybe

No matter what games are represented in Smash Bros., it's still its own game.  I don't want to play Wario Ware when I'm playing Smash Bros.  If I want to play Wario Ware, I'll put Wario Ware in the system instead.  I do like the idea of a Donkey Kong level, although there's no reason to take away any abilities, because that's paying homage to the old game within the gameplay of Smash Bros.  Once you take Smash Bros. out of it, though, you're no longer paying homage, you're just playing a crappy version of another game.
