General Chat / Re: Who wants to take some stuff off my hand?

I hope you just meant you have a terminal case of generosity, as in you're so generous it's like a disease, EasyCure.  Since you want to keep Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, I trust everyone's jumping to conclusions.

If that's so, I've always been interested in Donkey Kong 64 and Winback.  N64 games were too expensive for me back in the day.

I'd say it's interesting to note that Nintendo is giving a Mario Kart sequel a numbered title, but not all that interesting to talk about it.  It's portentous of nothing.  Just a "huh, look at that" kind of thing.

I have mixed feelings about Smash Kart.  Adding more characters and their associated locales for tracks could be fun, but it wouldn't really change the game much.  I'd be worried they'd feel obligated to add new items based on the new characters, and the series is getting too item-rich already.  I'd also worry that they'd let the novelty carry the game instead of making it, you know, good.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Will the Wii U support Trophies/Achievements?
« on: August 04, 2011, 06:05:30 PM »
What do they call them in Mega Man 9 and 10?  Those games have achievements, right?

I kind of like stars for Nintendo's own branding, but it would be confusing in Super Mario Universe when you get a star, thus earning a star for collecting 50 stars.  But wait, is that the 51st star?  No, it's an achievement star.  So why isn't it called an achievement?  Yeah.

If they have to be different from everyone else, they'll probably go with awards.  Nice and neutral, and they can always make the awards look like stars.  Maybe that could be part of a customizable scheme, as long as we're dreaming.  I'd want mine to look like super mushrooms, fire flowers, and stars for bronze, silver, and gold.

I for one have only seen one title announced that I would actually pay money for, and that's Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which had disappeared from retail land by the time I got a GBA.  I either own or have no interest in the rest, but I'll probably play all of them.  I'm hoping for Advance Wars.  I have AW2, but I never even saw the first game in a store.

About the lack of up-rezzing for Wii games on Wii U, yeah - very disappointing, especially considering what the Dolphin Emulator can do.
Even more worrying is the thought that Nintendo might not even support/allow HDMI use for old Wii games, as the original games didn't. Sounds ridiculous right?
Which is exactly why it might happen. Gulp.

Stop it.  You're scaring me.

It hasn't aged well.  Do yourself a favor and just wrap yourself up in your memories and never, ever play it again.

It doesn't need to be tethered to receive any of the other signals sent to it by the console.  I don't get the confusion.  If the console had A/V input, that signal could be streamed wirelessly to the controller.  It would mean someone could watch the news on the TV while someone else watched a DVD on the controller in the next room, and it wouldn't matter that the Wii U couldn't play DVDs because it would only be transmitting a signal from a device that does.  With that input, someone, hacker or otherwise, would be able to do many cool things.

Nintendo might use it to let you draw on the people on TV or distort the picture in amusing ways.  I actually do expect that to be possible, but only with video files stored on an SD card.  I doubt what I was talking about up there is going to happen, probably because of possible legal repercussions I can scarcely imagine, being a reasonable person and all.  I'm just getting a head start lamenting it, I guess.  :)

Edit: Oh hey, you edited while I was replying.  Just about any modern A/V receiver is going to have an HDMI output meant for routing all your video game consoles and media players and cable boxes to your TV.  I'm not sure if having a second output is common, at least not a second HDMI one (one for the TV and one for the Wii U in this scenario, if I'm being unclear).  Having both HDMI and component video and three different audio outputs is common enough.  I just said HDMI because it's pretty much the standard for now.

input.  So, for example, I can carry the controller around the house with me watching TV.

I skimmed them while they were up.  I liked the one with the static-faced characters the most.

« on: August 03, 2011, 06:08:23 PM »
Of course, as this Iwata Asks proves, they will not pass up the chance of using a gimmick, regardless if it needs it or not, and that mentality could prove to be a problem.

If a Nintendo game sucks, this is usually the reason why.  And it's a recent thing to.  We didn't see that kind of game ruining bullshit prior to the DS and the Wii.

The sparkling innovations started with the GameCube at the latest.  I'd say they started with the N64, but I can't think of any from that system that weren't well received.  The recent thing may just be whether or not they appealed to you.

p.s. Nintendo doesn't have to make all the software applications. They just need to make the hardware capable and the OS adaptable.
Logitech could make the Universal Remote app and sell it on the eShop for $20

At a bare minimum, the tablet needs to be able to send out IR signals.  It would be a dream come true if there was an HDMI input on the console, but that's something I'm certain will never happen.  You just know Sony's going to do it when they copy Nintendo this time, though.  That's a company that would happily integrate itself into an entertainment center, and probably with a multitouch screen, too.  I hope Nintendo sees the threat and beats them to the punch.  If Nintendo gets there first, it'll still be a blue ocean when they do.

Those graphics are very SNES-y.  In a good way.  I think WayForward sort of embraces the retro graphics movement, but targets '93 instead of '86.  Except for Shantae.  Which probably means I'm looking too deeply into it.

I certainly hope that this sells well (even though I probably won't buy it) so that Nintendo will make a new Star Fox, but I'm reasonably sure they'd once again misunderstand what makes Star Fox 64 so good and make another game that explores the characters and story but messes up the action.  After that, I'd like to hope they'd learn the right lesson and fix things, but I suspect they'd just kill the franchise instead.

I am a Star Fox pessimist.  I'm going to go look at Skyward Sword pictures to cheer up.

Couple of caveats I noticed:

In stock.
Processing takes an additional 3 to 4 days for orders from this seller.
Ships from and sold by STL PRO, Inc..

Not fulfilled by Amazon, so no free shipping.  Definitely no price matching.  Four extra days for "processing" plus this seller's shipping estimate is 3-5 business days (and $8.51).  If you order it today, it might not even ship until Thursday or Friday, and then it wouldn't arrive until the middle of next week at the earliest.  It's just possible to get it on time to get in on the Ambassador deal, but it'll be close.

My two favorite Zelda games are Ganon free, and I don't think it's a coincidence.  It lets the developers break from tradition and get creative.  Or maybe it would be better to say it's a sign of breaking from tradition.  Anyway, I have high hopes for this one.

Movies & TV / Re: New Movies/TV Shows we should keep an eye out for!

1. I wonder if the four nations are still separate.  I was trying to figure out which one that city belongs to, and I think it must be in the Fire Nation.  It's the most likely to have electricity and airships, not to mention coastal cities with big mountains.

2. It looks about on par with the important fight scenes of the original series to me.  It's hard to say what non-action scenes will look like since a trailer is obviously going to focus on action.  That ship near the start was just moving in a nice, cheap, straight line, though.

3. If she's following the proper procedures, she'd have to know earth before fire, right?  Isn't it water, earth, fire, then air?  I'm guessing the story is set during her fire training.  It would explain all the firebending action, and storywise, it would be her most trying time as Avatar, fire being water's opposite and all.  More potential for her to be an underdog that way.

4. I'm not seeing the metal.  If it is, that could be a real world weapon called an urumi.

5. Ayup.  Though I think Aang would have busted up property, too, if he'd had the animation budget for it.

6. I'm surprised it isn't something that can fly.  Two of the Avatars we knew of had flying animals.  A swimmer could have made sense, too.  Maybe an albatross-orca.  ;D  This is a glorified horse, not that there was ever a shortage of such things in Avatar land.

7. Might be cool if under that mask, he's someone we'd recognize.  Or their son, rather, given the time that's passed.

That's a simile.

How do the karts handle underwater?  Is it just a change of scenery, or are there going to be times when you have to weigh the options of plowing through a pool or going around it, perhaps depending on your character and kart design?

The gliding reminds me of F-Zero GX, where you had to find a good "racing line" in the air, i.e. balance speed with rate of descent.  I sucked at that, so I'm not really looking forward to it.
