I've started referring to my ever-growing backlog as my "retirement plan" since I won't have time to play everything until I retire.  I know what causes it, though.  I'm overcompensating for two issues from my gaming past:  1.) When I was a kid, I played every game until I was utterly bored with it because I couldn't have new games very often.  2.) When I was a teen, I was picky with my purchases because I didn't have much money, which led to me missing out on games when they eventually disappeared from store shelves.

Also, you should check your tags, Jonnyboy.  The post is a mess here in Talkback.

The controller usage explanation screen will be separated from the purchase screen. Along with this, the user will be prompted to confirm that they have any necessary accessories before being able to press the Purchase button.

People were actually dumb enough to buy games they lacked the controllers to play?  Sheesh.

Did you see that old Disney cartoon about the three little pigs recently?  That's the only place I've ever heard it.

I don't have a doubt that Factor 5 could do more, but all signs point to High Voltage actually doing pretty well so far.

Ian has it right.  I seem to remember Iwata or other execs claiming that the Wii would look just as good as the other consoles at SD resolution.  While I think we all knew that this wasn't true, at least we have somebody really proving it.

So basically you are criticizing the Conduit's visuals based on what Iwata said, not what the system is capable of? Might as well harpoon the DS for not looking as good as the PSP. I'm sorry but this is a weak argument, a games visuals should be judged by others on the console.

I think I read the same posts as you, and I don't recall any criticism of The Conduit's graphics.  It's just an interesting side point that High Voltage is finally exposing the Wii's graphical potential and giving us answers to two year old questions.  I'm pretty sure that stuff about Wii games looking as good in SD as 360 or PS3 games was fanboy rationalization, though, and not anything claimed by Iwata or anyone else at Nintendo.

Last night I watched Mike Rowe bite off a sheep's testicles.  The title of the episode was "Sheep Castrator," and the description in the guide said "working in a car dealership."  It turned out that the two weren't directly related.

The only band I recognize on that list is Kutless, which is a Christian rock band.  I don't see any of the Harmonix regulars from the first two Guitar Heroes.

Maybe you're just showing up late?  Even if I do a search and go straight to the product page, I see the adjusted price.  I guess you could try going to the video game department and clicking on the deal of the day link there to make sure.

Now lightning deals are another story.  If I remember right, if you go to a product page when it just happens to be a lightning deal, the regular price is displayed, but there's a link that says there's a special deal in the gold box, but I might be wrong.  I might even be mixing that up with the stuff chosen for your quick picks (which aren't usually worth bothering with; they are always 5% off the Amazon price regardless of what the gold box page says).

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What Makes a Game a "Party Game"?
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:52:10 PM »
Yes, the EVENT is social.  But I'm talking about the actual act of playing the game.  I just can't see a LAN party being as inclusionary acessible, etc. as a Wii game like Brawl or Wii Music.  I don't think it's appealing to "children of all ages", so to speak.

So games played at LAN parties aren't party games because a LAN party isn't as accessible as a party game?  That seems to be conflating the game itself with the hardware setup and/or nature of the gathering.  It sounds like you're trying to define what makes a game a party game based on how it's played, but then making exceptions for any games you don't want to be called party games even if some people like to play them that way.

Regardless, I don't really see a use for the distinction even if everyone could agree on a definition.  It can't be used to convey useful information about a game since, at best, it can only describe a subset of features.

As an aside, I have to wonder how much the existence and worth of the Mario Party games impacts this discussion, or even the many minigame compilations of questionable quality.  I think this is similar to the "casual = retard" thing, only it's "party = lame" this time.  That would certainly cause some defensiveness if someone started calling good games "party" games.

Amazon's video game deal of the day:
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (Nintendo DS) - $17.98 (Reg $28.99)

Skimming this thread, it becomes apparent that this is a favorite of Amazon's to discount.  Strange.

I guess this will be a better way to show off their engine than a blackjack game (Gyrostarr doesn't really count since its graphics have totally different goals).  My appetite for racing is usually quickly sated, so a WiiWare game is actually fairly tempting.  Also, <insert observation about this game having four-player split-screen while The Conduit does not>.

I just found out something that's great news for Muppet fans (thanks to VG Cats).  The Muppets are invading YouTube.  Statler and Waldorf are posting heckling video responses to videos, including the talking cats and Weezer's Pork and Beans video, and other characters are posting their own videos.  My favorite part is the full participation in the system, what with the characters having their own user names and profiles and posting videos as responses to other people's.

Here's a link to Statler and Waldorf's channel, from which you can get to all the videos.  User meepmeepmeepow has posted my favorite of the bunch.

Remember this?  Fozzie's joined in, and Rizzo left a comment on Fozzie's page that suggests another video is coming.  I looked at the early comments on the other known accounts to see if I could find any others the way I found Rizzo, but I haven't had any luck.

I don't judge 'em.  I just post 'em.

(Actually, I do judge them sometimes, like when it's something like Petz or Baby's First Disney Princess Game.  If I think there's a decent chance someone here might be interested, though, the only thing I do is check prices on Google to see if it's a real discount.)

Regarding parenthetical discussion on first game: The biggest problem with one on one battle mode is the time limit.  You can't turn it off and play elimination style.  Also, the levels are so enormous that you can go the full time without ever scoring a hit.

I love song three on game one so much.  It's close to the top of the list of game music I want to try to recreate in Guitar Hero World Tour.

I narrowed game four down to a few games because goat has done awesome rock mixes of these songs on OC Remix.  Unfortunately, I threw away the right answer because I didn't realize they were all combined in one medley in his remix.  This confused me enough that I guessed completely wrong, even though the right answer was the one that came to mind first.  I'm very disappointed in myself.

I only got the right series on the last game.  The question sort of led me to 4.  I plan to play it one of these days.

So I got the first two easily and then got tortured with stuff I should have been able to get for the rest of the show.

Edit:  TYP, why do you say you can't always use the listener requests?  Is it a matter of being unable to find the music?  Not wanting to play extremely obscure stuff?  Listeners requesting repeats?

I don't know why there was ever any resistance to compatibility in the first place.  There may be fewer peripherals sold as a result, but they've just gone from every GH:WT sale hurting them to every GH:WT sale helping them.
