I'm in.  It was past time to go back to the bear, anyway.

Santa Link looks like he's covered in shaving cream, to me, but it's still an awesome picture.

I just realized I'll probably be able to play after all if we start that late.  I need to start playing Brawl again, so I'm signing up.  I plan to go random.  My code is 4296-2669-2270.

Also, NWR's IRC chat is new and improved...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/chat.cfm

So we'll all be in there.

My PC and my TV are on opposite sides of my house, so I don't know about that.

Gundam Wing felt really DBZ like. Bunch of idiots calling their attacks. One of the enemies strategies for beating one of the five Gundams was to throw enough targets at it until it ran out of ammo.

A classic technique taken from Brannigan's Law.  :)

The fact these guys were fighting a revolution with only 5 mechs, indiscriminate fire, no teamwork as a 5 man band stereotype was just terrible. All in all, it felt like a bad Chinese knock off.

As I remember it, they were independently sent to Earth as terrorists and didn't really have a reason to work together until much later.  The story made enough sense to justify the really cool giant robot action, at least.

I felt Relena (The dual personality one right?) was the only thing good about it all because she was such a loon. Out of the whole show she was the only one that was remotely entertaining.

I think you're thinking of Lady Une, who once killed a man by dropping him from an airplane and then shooting him in the head.  Relena was the student who started out with a suicidal crush on Heero and eventually had a short stint as the queen of the world.

Short of torrenting the original Gundam, I not going to see it. However since SEED is pretty much a remake of the original, it's a bit redundant. However, I do love the slightly more simple designs of the early Gundams and the skirt wearing Doms are pretty amusing.

I liked the original quite a bit, but Cartoon Network pulled it after the September 11 attack and never showed it again.  They eventually showed the Teddy Bomber episode of Cowboy Bebop after skipping it that week, and it actually featured a terrorist blowing up buildings.  I'll never understand the way those people think.

Yeah, that totally sounds like Gundam Wing. I hate Gundam Wing. I guess only every second Gundam series are any good.

I liked Gundam Wing, but it was my first exposure to Gundam, so that probably has a lot to do with it.  My only gripes are that Relena starts out as such a loon and that the dub is so terrible.  Not only is the writing awkward, but some characters actually change voices between appearances.  Other than that, I've only seen something more than half of the original Gundam, a few miniseries in the UC timeline, and Gundam Seed.  I've seen most of G Gundam, but I don't really want to count that.  I don't spend much money on anime, so I only get to watch what the TV networks show.

Nothing against the score except in relation to his other scores.  Shouldn't gameplay be a 4 too then?  It just seems the 4 makes scoring the other categories irrelevant.  Why bother then?

If it is possible for a thing to be greater than the sum of its parts, then I submit that it is also possible for a thing to be worse than the sum of its parts.

SciFi Channel started showing Gundam 00 last night on Animonday (side rant: they can show the commercials in HD but not the actual shows?).  Two episodes in, and they've already skipped straight to the "We want to abolish all war" part of the non-UC Gundam formula.  That doesn't seem like a good sign, but I have to give them credit for trying something a little different.  So far I get the feeling that this is a lame remake of Gundam Wing with generic mecha designs, kind of like how Gundam Seed started out as a remake of the original Mobile Suit Gundam.  Gundam Seed managed to grab me right from the beginning, though.  Gundam 00's opening was promising, showing some decidedly more western styled mecha with a nice Zaku eye homage, then fell completely to pieces, especially the extraordinarily redundant speech at the episode's end.  Mojo Jojo is more concise.

Of course, I'm not expecting much from the show just based on the names alone, and I mean the names of characters, organizations, mobile suits, and anything else.  Anime characters often have stupid names, especially when they're supposed to be English names, but Gundam 00 is trying to set some kind of record.  Human Reform League?  The Advanced European Union?  How is it advanced?  Because this is the future?  Neither of those are as bad as Celestial Being, though.  It sounds like the worst translation of Angel possible, but I'd wager it was always called that.  A sniper named Lockon?  If he has such good aim, what does locking on have to do with it?  The name does not imply skill of any kind.  Then there's the requisite blond ace's Flag mobile suit.  I'm guessing it's supposed to sound like a patriotic name, but it has about the same impact as naming a giant robot Inscription or Statue.  Less, actually, since those two words at least have connotations of permanence instead of wavering.

It's stuff like this that really makes me miss the Woolsey style of localization.

What's so special about using racks of consoles as servers, anyway?  It may seem neat-o to a few gamers, but it's probably a lot less efficient and harder to maintain than a traditional server farm.

I'm so happy to hear that TYP played the game I requested, too.  I never got to try the two player game, so I'm jealous.

Where did you find the music?  I looked around before making the request, but I didn't know where to look, and Google didn't seem to, either.

I also used to get part of game 4, song 2 stuck in my head sometimes.  That game may have seemed clunky, but I sure liked it.  It looks like a weird mix of action and RPG, but it's really almost all RPG, complete with grinding.

Even with the aid of picking one of them, I only managed to get three games right today.

I saw the commercial this weekend.  I rewound it and watched it frame by frame because something looked odd to me.  It was the way the characters hit each other, or rather, the way they never actually touched each other.  The Joker apparently got launched into the air by the air pressure of a punch at one point, and the Flash is telekinetic now.  Wait, two characters did touch one time, when Raiden (is that his name?) flew through his opponent before the hit detection figured it out.  I know this is fairly common in 3D fighters, but it looked particularly wrong to me in this case.

Also, they showed Batman getting beaten up several times in the commercial.  Everyone knows that's statistically impossible.

Steam is convenient enough that even when I buy boxed copies of games, I just type in the code in Steam and let it download everything instead of messing with the discs.  It takes longer, but I can go do something else instead of waiting for it to ask for the next disc.

Is it comedy or tragedy that Nintendo has decided to do something similar to the main topic?

I know, what's the point?  It does nothing more than waste the player's time.

I guess they're trying to add some realism, but that only really works in a fully fleshed out RPG.

General Gaming / Re: Amazing Deals!
« on: November 19, 2008, 11:12:08 AM »
I posted this in the Nintendo Console board already, but today's deal is particularly good for general gaming.  Amazon is posting a new video game deal every day until Black Friday.  Today's deal is a $25 future discount for buying 2 select games or a $50 future discount for buying 3 select games.  The list is made up of several of 2008's biggest titles across multiple platforms.

Make sure to check that link every day.

This daily offer is in addition to the usual deal of the day, which today is Alone in the Dark for $14.98 on Xbox 360 or $9.98 on Wii or PS2.

I am terribly ashamed of this post.

Zap: The new title doesnt work, i'm nosey when it comes to stuff that might involve me ;)

Now that EasyCure won't be coming back in here, I can point out how narcissistic he is.

Only one of my personalities is narcissistic :(

He's also a liar (and emo).

TalkBack / Re: Politicians Praise ESRB's New Ratings Summaries
« on: November 18, 2008, 12:31:29 PM »
I'm aware of the politicians in question.  If they really did want government regulation of video games, they would not be appeased by anything the ESRB did.  That they are willing to back down at all reveals their real motivation.

1198
I wasn't going to buy it anyway, so I can sign here and be strong at no personal cost.

I don't know where they're going to find room to print that description, but it's certainly a good idea.

Thankfully, the two Senators seem to be appeased by the ESRB's latest addition. Only time will tell if they are truly satisfied with ratings summaries or not.

They have to act appeased because they don't really want the government involved in game regulation.  With the industry policing itself, it makes an easy target to rail against after some idiot with a Rockstar game in his house kills someone.  Their voters see them doing something "for the good of the people" and reelect them.  If the government was responsible for regulating games, every random killing blamed on games would cost them votes instead.
