Nintendo Gaming / RE:The Revolution: the good, the bad, and the ugly

What good is a story without an atagonist? You must admit that his negativity stimulates thought. Although I would have to say that a lot of the doubts he voices, are doubts that I myself have had at one point or another. When I first saw the controller, I was like WTF. nintendo lost their mind. then once i saw what people were doing with it, I was was like, i should call nintendo and tell them to slap me for doubting. the controller will be good, look at the ds, and you know nintendo likes thing as near perfect as they can get them (although i do think the ds touch screen is a little off sometimes)  2 more months and a couple of days and all doubts can be put to bed. my only questio what will people bitch about next? are we gonna have to keep debating the whole HD thing?

Good question.

I really don't see this happening anytime soon, Nintendo has a way of wanting their technologies whether proprietary or not, to be perfect and suitable for everyone to use before releasing it in any way shape or form. well at least they do since the might fall of the vb.

If nintendo is going to make a portable with more graphical capabilities than a DS but less than a Rev, why not use gc discs? It would almost be stupid not too, why create new technology when you have it readily available to you already? The battery life can be dealt with by the time they'd be ready to release the system. but i definitely don't see any advantages to using a card reader system

Why can't they use gameplay graphics to advertise? I wanted to see some in game action, get a glimpse of what I'd be doing in the game, I say once we get some finished gameplay footage we collectively sue for false advertising. And is it just me, or are those fmv scenes what you were hoping next-gen or new-gen for that matter, graphics would look like?

I'm playing throught KH1 for the second time, but i'm also playing Baten Kaitos for the 3rd time, Metroid Prime 2 for the 3rd time, and Tales of Symphonia for the 2nd time, along with a few first timers. So hopefully by the time i beat KH1 again, the second one will be out.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why is the console so small?
« on: February 28, 2006, 12:45:57 PM »
I just hope Nintendo uses dual layer high density dvd's as they originally said. I really want to play a 200hr rpg. Imagine playing a character who grows over time, (actual gameplay time not, the events you do in the game) you guide him through his fuedal town to become a knight, anyway this is way off topic, just give me good, expansive, long, difficult, and memorable games and i'm happy, what will it matter if they're in HD, SD, UD or in poopovision, good games, big console small console, games are what matters.

(P.S damn there are some long posts in this thread, ease up, you're not nintendo)

But didn't you know ... Liiiiiink ... stands alone.

Too funny vudu, i'm still laughing.

Anyway, what's wrong with violence. I say give me gore, blood, head rolling around, limbs being detached, bloody impales, maybe even some blood curdling screams. I don't get you guys at all. You say you want more realism in games, more immersion, and good graphics do that? No! When you swing a sword damage is done. Make the damage more real, by making it more explicit. I'll tell you what, get a sharp sword, or better yet get a master sword, a sword so strong it can repel the greatest evil in the land... then swing it at someone's neck, if their head doesn't fall off, then i'm wrong the LoZ games are real enough. Maybe it's just me, but I love movies like Gladiator, Braveheart, The Patriot. I mean dismemberment is a part of war and fighting, you want realism, you better be ready for blood and gore. Of course, if they make the game without it, I'd be just as satisfied.

I would consider that a biased source. Why would a dev who is making a Rev game say anything negative? They want you to buy the console and buy their game.

They could just not make a game if they thought it sucked. $2000 isn't too much to lose on a dev kit. but at the same time you make a fair point. guess we'll have to wait until e3.

I've never asked Nintendo to do the same thing as Sony or MS. But I don't want them to try to dodge the competition and do something incredibly weird either. They're the best game makers in the world and I think if they just didn't screw so many routine things up, had good marketing, and thought more than two months ahead when making cost cutting decisions they would do much better. At the very least I'd like to see a Nintendo console that does 90% of everything right and if it still "fails" I can say "yeah it wasn't their fault". But I see the Cube's and N64's "failures" as largely self inflicted due to severe incompetence so I don't think it makes sense to abandon all hope of competing yet. I think the problems are also still present and even dodging the competition won't work if they still don't understand how to market effectively or the importance of third party support.

While I don't agree with you, this is exactly what I wanted to know, what the hell do you expect from nintendo? This explains it, and it's not totally unreasonable. the only thing i'd have to say is instead of crucifying nintendo for decisions we're yet to see the effect of wait until you know how they will turn out. I know the same could be said to myself and the others who praise nintendo constantly, but that praise is based on what you said yourself, "they're  the best game makers in the world" we know they will continue to be great game makers, and a lot of people myself included, are very excited about the new controller, i can't wait to not only get my hands on it, but see what kind of games, the best game makers in the world, are going to create with this new device in tow. Is it bad that nintendo is going to be the weakest graphically? we won't know until completely un-biased people (gamers) and the people who hate nintendo (the media) get their hands on the controller and tell us, and subsequently the launch of the revolution and our own experiences will also tell us. I just don't think it's fair to label something that's only gotten praise (biased or not) so far, as being a con.

I think it's rather funny that they gave this a japanese name, when I don't think the any japanese person would buy it seeing how they have much better tablet pc's than we do. this isn't microsoft trying to compete solely with the ipod. they're trying to compete with psp also, and the gb, and the ds. in terms of it being a multimedia device, and gaming system. In a couple days listen careful to how much they talk about it's graphics, and the kind of games they plan to release for it. I wonder if they'll also talk about how much this is going to cost them when only half the people who bought xbox's buy this and it flops.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Red Tribe (aussie dev) working on Revolution
« on: February 28, 2006, 04:20:03 AM »
Hey whats wrong with barbie games? so anyway, this news makes me happy, cuz it means the first part of nintendo's "blue ocean" strategy is working, indie developers would be the first to take big risks with the controller, and we might get some aussie barbie games, cook up some kanga, drink some fosters, and hav a good time. or maybe we'll get a star fighter that redefines the way vehicular based combat is done. either one is fine by me.

I wonder if they're planning on doing a Twilight Princess master quest type of deal. That would be better than releasing the same game twice, why would anyone buy the gc version who's planning to get a rev, unless of course they don't tell us there are two versions. and "surprise" (aka, piss us the f**k off) with a tp rev launch game that's exactly the same as the gc. sad part is i'd probably still buy it.

That would be the best idea i think. Right Ian give us the OPTION of what not only what size hard drive we want to use, but what type of storage media we want to use since we could also use sd cards to save. . I'm just bustin ur balls btw.

No one has played any games yet and that's the big iffy part about the Rev.  The second the controller was shown everyone was like "Well that's nice.  How do I play ____ on it?"  There is a very large issue regarding compatibility with certain genres or types of games.  So to call it a pro this early to me is premature.  I would typically not categorize odd, unexpected change that no one wanted or asked for as a pro until I at least see it in action.  If remote games aren't that exciting and/or the remote is incapable of playing certain popular types of games then the controller would be a huge con.  Even with the shell as a safety net, if the remote bombs the Rev is at a serious disadvantage.  Without it the Rev is just an underpowered "normal console".

Didn't you read my whole post? I quoted developers who HAVE played games with the controller.  Oh and I wanted a change, I asked for it, bcuz I thought to myself, if nintendo only tries to improve their graphics, I might have to buy a sony, bcuz of the game support. I was thinking more along the lines possibly VR, but making a t.v version of the DS also crossed my mind.

Although I must say to the people who think that the rev will be as powerful as ps3 and 360 please share whatever it is you smoking, cuz it must be good. I believe many different nintendo people have reiterated that it will not, although they haven't said it straight saying "we're not entering the graphics war" is saying the same thing. It's like saying the swiss army is as strong as that of the U.S. Just cuz they don't fight ANY wars doesn't mean their army isn't weaker than the U.S's right?

Oh and the revolution isn't perfect (to agree with nemo) if it were it would have everything it does now, a hard drive, virtual reality, HD graphics, the ability to connect as many remotes to one console as you want, have sex with you, and launch for  $299. ok, but seriously it isn't perfect, but i just believe it's going to be the best system this generation, obviously not for it's graphical capabilities, but it's innovation.

If it's outside the suggestions here, it'll probably  be something lamer than a mic in the remote.

This one is dirty and I don't know how to do that thing that hides the words until you highlight them so read at your own risk. the first line should tell you enough.

These two gays guys were having sex.
After they were done they decided to take a shower.
As they're about to get into the shower the doorbell rings.
The one who goes to get the door, says to the other one, "don't start without me".
After a few minutes he returns to the bathroom and sees a load of semen on the wall.
He says, "What the hell I said don't start without me".
His boyfriend replies, "I didn't, I farted!"

hmmmm, that makes me think, wouldn't making the next gameboy, (which has to come sooner than 5 yrs from now, since we'll probably have the new DS in 5 yrs) too innovative cut into the DS? i could see adding a mic, but give the gb touch screen and there's no longer a reason to have 3 pillars. i might be wrong, but i wouldn't be surprised to see a new gb at e3 2007.

1873
Good points strell, and to add to that yesterday my brother reminded me when I was discussing the whole sd card thing with him, that buying a 1 or 2 GB card for $90 is good considering that I bought 5 gc memory cards for $30 each over the course of the gc's life, and you can't trade them in. (i like to play games especially rpg's over and over, so i don't delete things, plus certain sports games need their own memory cards, which is why i need 5, although right now i only use 3, well 4 cuz i need a seperate one for the naruto imports.)

Ian, please find me one negative feedback from someone who has played with the controller. Then you can say that it's a possible con.

Here's my proof that it's a pro:

Asked whether or not Revolution's horsepower was insufficient, one development source said no. "At first, we were discouraged that it would be less powerful than Xbox 360, but once we got everything working with the controller, our concerns faded," he explained.  Other studios IGN Revolution has been in contact with have echoed this enthusiasm, always admitting that Nintendo's new console will be less powerful, but stressing that with the emphasis on the innovative controller it simply won't matter.

Sounds good to me, how about you?
