Nintendo Gaming / A serious gaming machine
« on: July 06, 2006, 01:38:45 AM »
I was watching T.V last night and I caught this show called gamer.tv on Starz Edge(that's a movie channel btw), and the little info bar for the show said it was going to be all about the ps3. So I decide to watch it, because I am some what interested in the system because of my love for RPG's. So right in the begining of the show, I mean in the opening preview of the show, before it even starts the commentator says, "If you want a serious gaming machine, it's either Sony PS3 or Xbox360. So we ask the question that will soon be heard around the world, 360 or PS3?"

At first I was pissed but in a comical way almost, because I thought to myself, Nintendo is a serious contender this time around developer seem to really like the system, and it was fairly well received at E3 by those who played it. So what made his statement funny to me was that they were just being totally ignorant, like most of the gaming community.

Then it hit me. In terms of what he was actually talking about before he made that seemingly erroneous statement (the power oof the PS3) the Wii shouldn't have been included in that statement.

Nintendo has brought this on themselves (personally I don't mind) people are going to view the Wii, as a less serious machine, because Nintendo wants them too. We all talk about how all the power of the PS3 and 360 are unnecessary when the games remain stagnant and I believe this to be true. But then we have the general public. The sheep of the world who's only source of knowledge comes from the mouths of people who are in broadcasting*. So all these people know is that, PS3 is the most powerful system, and then 360. Before you say that GC was more powerful than the PS2 ask yourselves how many people really knew this since Nintendo didn't market it?? I had a two hour argument with 2 of my friends trying to explain to them that GC was more powerful than PS2, and I only won the argument with logic, I couldn't even find facts to help me, or at least I couldn't think where to get them at the time...

So now it's time for the Nex-Gen system to arrive, and in this age where laptops are catching up to desktops Sony and Microsoft are only going to talk about the power of their machines and their respective HD capabilities. Unless Nintendo can make a big enough splash come launch date (which HAS to be before PS3 to have hope) the question really will be 360 or PS3.

Nintendo wanted to stand out in the video game market, I just hope this move doesn't have them standing alone wondering where the money went.**

*On a random side note: Is it just me or are there more and more people with british accents on T.V nowadays? I usually don't watch live T.V usually only movies or documentaries that I record on Tivo but yesterday I did because of my boredom, and everyone had a british accent.*

** I not only want Nintendo's plan to succeed, but I think it can. It just isn't going to be easy**

Nintendo Gaming / A Wii little problem
« on: May 06, 2006, 03:13:03 AM »
The problem i'm having with Wii right now is the same one I had with the DS. When I first saw the DS I was like HELL YES!! finally a system perfectly tailored to play RPG's... where are they? Now with Wii, although I see at as perfectly tailored to play FPS's I still think there are some cool things that can be done in the RPG segment.

Last-gen the reason I bought a PS2 was for the RPG's and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. Right now I'm playing Dragon Quest VIII, Disgea, and I was given another by my brother that i haven't played yet, tales of shadow or shadow tales, i don't feel like going to get the exact name, then there are all the ones I've already played which are too many to name.

We have heard a lot of games being mentioned for Wii, ranging in every genre, except RPG's. The DS has not had one good RPG released for it yet, and it took like 9 months or more for it to get it's first one. Where are the Wii RPG's??? I think that Final Fantasy guy said they wanted to a Crystal Chronicles for it, or maybe he was talking about the DS, but either way, I'm not really looking forward to it after the first one. I need a game I can play by myself and still have it be good. I'm probably going to buy a PS3 although that will be my secondary system, not Wii like Nintendo said it wouldn't mind people doing. But I'd prefer it if a massive amount of RPG's would be released for Wii, I really want to see how they can utilize the FHC for a game like that here are my ideas so that this isn't just a rant:

1. Action RPG: Battles would have to take place on 3d plane unlike Tales of Legendia, use the nunchuck to move character while the Wiimote would be used to quickly select targets and used like a sword or axe or gun depending on the RPG and character to attack. Spells would be button assigned on the d-pad to keep the action quick and simple. Also along the bottom of the screen not on the field but below it, would be some quick use icons, you'd be able to assign like different weapons, or healing items to them, obviously you'd just point and click with the Wiimote to use them.

2. Turn-based RPG(my favorite): I would love a deep rich battle system utilizing the Wiimote greatly and immensely complicated and rewarding. In battle, your basic attack would only require you to select your target and use the A button to confirm. Special attacks still in the physical realm(i.e not magic spells) require you to perform the action in "on" the monster. You would have attacks like assigned to vertical, horizontal, and diagonal slashes, later more powerful moves would incorporate multiple slashes, not too many as it could hard to remember, I'd say at most 3. The effect of the spell could be tied to the efficiency of the move, how accurate you were on the target, and how quickly you performed it. For spells I have about a million ideas, but the best one would probably be to use the system in Lost Magic, which was a great idea which wasn't implemented to its full potential(as a whole for the game). Again, you'd draw the rune symbols on the monster with the effect being tied to the efficiency of your drawing.

I just think there are so many things that I can't even think, of and other that I have and haven't written here that could be done to make the most brilliant RPG ever. Although I do still have some reserved doubts about the Wii, I do believe it has the incredible potential to make the best games for every genre. We've already seen how amazing FPS's and Madden will be for it, and they definitely will be the best ever of those genre's. I just hope they Revolutionize every genre the way they should.

Nintendo Gaming / What are the chances?
« on: April 28, 2006, 02:02:51 PM »
This is totally hypothetical as it's just a random thought that passed slowly enough through my head that I could remember before the ensuing onslaught of completely unrelated ideas trampled through destroying all memory of it.

What if the Wii were to become so popular that it completely crushed the ps3 and xbox360 and made them no more? both sony and microsoft admit their defeat and go back to making billions of dollars the in other areas of entertainment. then Nintendo stands alone again until someone else decides to take a shot. This is what we all want right?

Ok so here's my question. If this were to happen what are the chances of the good games for those systems (halo3, new xenosaga, and a bunch others) being brought over to Wii to generate sales since they didn't sell on the other 2? I'd love to play some of the games being created for the ps3 but i don't want to buy one. I probably will eventually break down and get it, but I'd rather my hypothetical situation manifested itself.

Today is a very special day! No not because some new info was leaked about the Rev or that I found the secret to eternal youth. NO! Today is special because it is Four f'ing Twenty or 4/20 how ever you want to put its the "national" "global" marijuana smoking day. (I've never seriously used the pot to refer to reefer).

To those who don't smoke, I get it. It's not only illegal it's bad for you.

To those who do... HELL YEAH! Live life to the fullest that's what I say. Forget all your troubles for a couple of hours, relax, laugh a lot, eat a combination of foods you normally wouldn't consider (like animal crackers and cream cheese, i'm telling you it's really really good) and just have some fun. There are plenty of times I've had a whole lot of fun being sober, but its still fun to smoke.

Why is today different from other days that people smoke on? Well its just sort of like a tradition, it's like hey, I don't generally smoke everyday, but this day for certain I'm going to.

My plans for the day: Go to my friends house who happens to also be my "pharmacist" and together he, i, my gf and her fat friend, and one other dude are going to bowl, roll, and bong our way through about $300 worth of 7 different strands of cheeba ($300 collectively not seperately). It's going to fun, the best part is I don't have work tomorrow, so i'm going to sleep all day then go to PA in the afternoon.

I hope everyone else has fun today also.

CELEBRATE, it's a good day to be alive!

General Gaming / Dora the Exlporer
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:48:48 AM »
So I was watching Dora the Explorer today and it made think of the Revolution. She was out hunting for Easter eggs, and she asks into the "camera" do you see an egg? and of course its totally obvious to the person watching it that the egg was barely hidden in some grass out of her view. Then this blue arrow comes out of nowhere and points to the egg, like the child, or in my case adult watching it points to the egg.

Here's my point: with things like Tivo and the Revolution, how far off is interactive "live" t.v, imagine that same scenario in Dora, except with a Rev like remote, the child points at the egg, if they point to the wrong spot, they get that dun! noise u get with Tivo when you press something unapplicable at the time, the screen pauses until they click correctly on the egg, that where the Tivo aspect comes in. While the child is still trying to point at the egg, the show might continue, but to keep it continuous tivo would start recording from the point so that whenever the child is ready the story picks up wherever they left off, and they're off to hunt for more eggs. You could also do something with swiper, and like having to catch him or something. This would work for other shows as well, like sesame street, like find the blue A and other shows like that. Of course when this is created it'll probably be porn that brings it mainstream like the VCR.

General Gaming / Kingdom Hears 2
« on: April 11, 2006, 12:31:58 PM »
I finally bought this game, and was so glad then I started playing it... or should I say watching it. This game is over 50% cut scenes, i mean give me a break, the game plays really well don't get me wrong, i love the battle system, all the different characters, and special moves, and the additions to the battle system are more than welcome. again the game plays really well, but you never get to play it. I'm 9 hours in, and i swear i've only played for 3 or 4, i'm thinking of starting the game over and skipping every scene to see how long it really is, you seriously only take a few steps, or a few battles before a cutscene usually twice as long as you just played for, it's kind of annoying, the worst part is that the game is really good, when you actually play it, and that's what really annoys me.

I know a lot, ok most, rpg's use a lot of dialogue and cutscenes to tell their stories, but this is rather extensive, the worst part is, again, the game play is really good, and almost makes all the stupid, and often completely unneccessary scenes worth it, just to get back to playing.

Anyway, this is just a rant.

Random thought:

If you could have one special power or attribute what would it be?

Mine: power: telepathy/telekinesis         attribute: ever since watching the anime Escaflowne, I have wanted to have wings, huge friggin wings that i could fly with, and smack people with, and have sex in the air with, and yeah... i'd love to have wings.

Nintendo Gaming / Weeds!
« on: April 08, 2006, 09:32:44 AM »
Alrighty then.

I was just watching Weeds, on showtime one of my favorite shows about surbanites who smoke and sell marijuana. And the main character was playing a DS! (she's gotta be like 40 something) they didn't show what game she was playing but I was like woah wtf! Is nintendo sponsoring this risque show?

Anyway the other point of this topic is DS sightings on T.V. This is the only one I've seen.

Nintendo Gaming / To buy or not to buy?
« on: April 04, 2006, 02:02:20 PM »
This is not a poll!

Just a curiousity

There's a lot of love for the rev, and there's also a lot of doubt.

So for those of us who are planning to buy a Revolution, I'm wondering, what could Nintendo do that would make you no longer desire to buy it? You know it's weaker graphically, you know nothing about the controller or games, and you want to buy it, so what more would they have to do to persuade you?

For those of you who are doubting whether or not you're going to buy one, I want to know the opposite.
What could Nintendo do to persuade you to buy a Revolution? They're offering a nunchuck, a shell controller, and innovative gameplay and you're still not satisfied. What more do you want?

I realize the potential this has to not only turn into a joke thread, but quite possible flame war, so let's be civil and politely criticize those we disagree with. Also post seriously, my curiousity overwhelms me and often gets me into trouble like asking a girl "are those real??" SLAP . So let's have it here's mine:

Nintendo would have to come out at E3 and say, we've decided that instead of being innovative we're going to release a system more akin to the competition, sorry no motion sensing, our console is going to be so huge and powerful that everyone will love it. Then I wouldn't buy one.

Nintendo Gaming / Age of Empires DS
« on: April 03, 2006, 11:15:32 AM »
Hello everybody . Anyway this is a two part thread and the second part may belong in a different forum but here it is.

I love this friggin game. It is awesome. Is anyone else playing this thing? I've played with all the civilizations and unlike the computer game they are actually pretty fairly balanced. This is the one of the best turn based strategy games I've played in a while. I am so hooked on it, I haven't been playing much else. Personally I'd love it if the computer games were like this, and am hoping that they bring this game to the rev with more options/civilizations/and other stuff. This game is fairly large, the campaign mode is fairly deep, there are tons of maps, boat loads of units, and there are unlockable units and maps. If you like strategy games, BUY THIS!! I believe I got it for $30, at the time I bought it I was still getting my ass kicked in Mario Kart wifi but since I've started playing I haven't played much else.

I also hate this game. It is so addicting that's its kind of ridiculous. I play it at work (on my lunch break anyway), I play at school, at home, in the car, when I get bored of my friends hanging out, ALL THE TIME! That's not ever why I hate it. I hate it because right when it starts sucking me in... GLITCH!! This game freezes, and often when I try to save it says: Could not write data, please turn off the DS and reinsert the game cartridge. WTF!! It makes me wanna scream. So anyway, is it my DS or the game? and is there anyway to correct this?

Nintendo Gaming / First Place
« on: March 06, 2006, 06:19:53 AM »
Unlike other topics that have some basis in fact, this one is total speculation.

Here's what I'm wondering what do you guys think (even the haters) will happen if Nintendo were to become #1 in console sales again with the revolution? Not just the effect it would have on Nintendo, but on Sony, Microsoft, and the video game community in general. What about the trickle effect? Would Nintendo being #1 with the revolution effect their handhelds at all? I'll ask one other question with the hope that it doesn't start a flame war; Is it even possible for the revolution to boost Nintendo to #1 again?  The ps3 may have it's share of problem at the moment, but there are still lots of people who can't even begin to fathom buying anything except the next playstation.

I have my own answers to these questions, but first I'd like to see what others think.

Nintendo Gaming / New Gameboy
« on: February 24, 2006, 09:14:14 AM »
A thought occured to me recently. It has been talked about before, that the new gameboy, could and probably should use gamecube discs as it's media. and I agree with that to the point that it would expand it's library, and be very inexpensive, as since the revolution is so small they can obviously make something with the power of gamecube miniscule. however with the size of the discs and decent sized screen we're talking about a sizeable system which would be one drawback. drawback two would be that one of the biggest selling factors of all gameboys i've always felt was it's unrestrained backwards compatibility, sure they could add the hardware to play the old games, but now we're talking even bigger and heavier to accomodate it, especially since the ds only plays gba games. Using gamecube discs has major advantages though, I already mentioned the low cost since GC's are mass produced already shrinking the down the same hardware probably wouldn't cost too much, and the discs also, no new media required, bigger library, great grapics, and the rev would be able to play all new games for it also. Realistically i don't see a new gameboy any time in the near future, the gba sp, gbmicro, and ds, are all selling really well, with no real competition. I don't think the psp counts for 2 reasons. 1. it's a multimedia player, where as the gb's and ds are pure gaming systems. 2. the level of sales aren't even close. And nintendo is probably still rolling around in their gameboy bed of success having pillows fights with pillows full of yen.

I was just wondering what others thought about these issues.

Nintendo Gaming / Current Games
« on: February 23, 2006, 06:01:41 AM »
I'm not sure if this should go in this section or the rev section but as it has to do with GC games I guess here's fine.

There are a few games that are being released for the GC in Japan that should be brought over to the U.S. My concern is that with the translating and production time it usually takes a game to be brought over is that the GC will be dead already. What's gonna happen to those games? The rev can play them so do they still release them? But they'd have to release them as GC games cuz the conversion to a rev game would require new programming making the game take longer to release, and would be slightly unfair to japanese gamers. My two main concerns are the Naruto RPG and Baten Kaitos 2. Baten Kaitos 2 is very likely going to be released or they will try their best to release before the rev launch as it was fairly popular over here, but Naruto was time released with the series in Japan, and the same would have to be true for the states. Both these games are heavy on speaking (i don't think that's the word i'm looking for) whether it be voice acting or text, but it adds time to the development, especially since a lot of things can't be directly translated and need to be "americanized". This is even more of a concern for europe, if the Rev is going to be released simultaneously world-wide. Anyone hear anything about Nintendo's plan for this, or feel free to speculate, cuz i have no idea.

Nintendo Gaming / Other options
« on: February 17, 2006, 12:17:15 PM »
I was looking at those "illegal" scans of the upcoming nintendo power UK, and saw that in the on of the photo's Link is riding towards a boss (sub-boss maybe) on his horse with his sword raised, now i'm sure you've all seen this video, but what struck me is that the sword was in his left hand. i don't really feel like popping a zelda game into my cube to confirm this, but i'm pretty sure that he usually holds the sword in his right hand. Now usually this doesn't matter, but in the case of the revmote it kind of does. the page with the pic, say image yourself with the nunchuck in one hand and the hand raised ready to strike down, if the Link i'm playing with is left handed, it would be a fairly unnatural movement to swing the sword (at least while holding the nunchuck, and in the position of the pic) in the necessary fashion. Anyway on to my point, and the name of this thread, a lot of simulation/rpg's (from nintendo) have the option of choosing a boy or girl as the main character harvest moon, pokemon so on, for the rev it would seem they are also going to have an option to for which hand you play with. stupid huh? yes, so the name of the topic, any other foreseeable or tottally imaginative options going to be available or necessary for this new control scheme? feel free to bash my topic also, or just comment. :-)
