Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why is the console so small?
« on: February 23, 2006, 02:43:26 PM »
I'll go partly in with BigJim.  I know a lot of you mean well, but HD is not the marginalized, pure luxury item that everybody makes it out to be.  You can find a 26-27" HDTV at a Brick and Mortar store (does anybody shop those anymore?) for around $500.  In terms of established user base, yes, HD is not widespread.  In terms of sales from today forward, I think it will closer to 50-50.  Some people have said that HD is 'new' technology, some say that it has been around for a while, but still hasn't dropped in price.  Which is it?  HDTVs have dropped by about 40% over the last two years.  Someone else said that it probably doesn't cost manufacturers any more to produce HDTVs, but they still charge a premium.  Why not say that about Nintendo and its products?

By all accounts, Nintendo could charge $300 for the Revo and likely still be the 'cheapest' console.  This is probably $100 more that Revo will actually end up costing.  I refuse to believe that N couldn't add a little more gumption and some bells & whistles for that $100.

Also, I don't see how you can compare consoles to handhelds.  If for no other reason, in terms of handhelds, Nintendo was king.  That is assuredly not the case in consoles.

Does Nintendo deserve to make a profit?  Absolutely, how about one dollar?  Charge $1 more than it costs to make the thing.  You could always make that up in volume.  And we would be paying $121 for the Revo, give or take.

To add at least a little back to the topic:  I still don't believe size is a determining factor in consoles.  Unless it is smaller than a PDA or bigger than an A/V receiver.

P.S.  I sit about 8-9 feet from my 32" screen and HD channels look frickin' sweet.  I don't know where that figures into your calculations.

Small is all well and good.
I don't care.

I have a HD TV.
I'm really bummed that the Revo will not support it fully.

Look..I'm all for Nintendo making a profit, but who says they have to make a ton of profit?  If Nintendo made as much money on the GC as everybody here said they did, maybe they could have scaled it back a bit.  Nintendo will likely have at least $100 to play with and still be less than any competitor.  A little more power, HD support?  Yeah, I probably would have paid $250 for that, even if it was as big as a XBox.  Also, it is likely that this year, new HD TV sales will greatly outnumber SD TV sales, for what that's worth.

Given the specs that we know, or we think we know, I don't see myself paying more than $150 for it.  If Nintendo is right and Revos sell faster than hotcakes, or rubbers (name that obscure reference), I'll be happy for them.  Is a small form factor going to help them sell?  We'll see.

This is definitely good news.  A lot of people (who shall remain nameless) believe that Nintendo and sports games are mutually exclusive.  They don't need to be.  Just because you like sports games doesn't mean you don't like Zelda, Metroid, etc.  You shouldn't HAVE to buy a second console to get the best of all worlds.  And I really enjoyed Pennant Chase Baseball....uh....nevermind.

I agree with number 4 on the list.  It is definitely cheaper.  Hopefully, the Revo will debut with one RevMote and shell for less than $150.

If Nintendo is never going to utilize HiDef in the future, then they are probably better off simply not including it.  And no, I'm not bitter about the fact that there are a couple plastic covers on the bottom of my GC that have never come off.

I'm afraid some may have missed the point.  I'm not suggesting a Metroid Prime sequel.  You could argue that Metroid Prime wasn't so much of a Metroid sequel as a re-invention.

It's like the SATs.  Metroid Prime is to Gamecube as (blank) is to Revolution.  A game that makes people other than Nintendo fanboys look at Nintendo and need to have it.  Is this a sequel game?  A new franchise?  Nintendogs Revolution?  Probably not.

Buzz.

They need Metroid Prime....again.

Metroid Prime was the one of the only games in this generation that had EVERYBODY thinking about Nintendo.  Two of my friends (one an PC gamer, the other XBOX, neither had GC) both asked me if I was going to get MP.  I would go into an electronics store and overhear people talking about the game.  That game had fantastic buzz, thankfully, it delivered, and for a period of time, Nintendo was the 'Cool' console.  Yes, yes..I know Nintendo is always cool, yada, yada.

This is probably blasphemy, but I'm beginning to think they should have kept Zelda for the Revo.  Twilight Princess could be one of those games you have to have.  With the way it is being released, I don't know if it will really drive console sales.

I don't care what kind of game, what type of audience (MP wasn't 'Mature' by most standards, but still a kick @$$ game), but you need that kind of buzz.

Meanwhile at the hall of Justice:
From a marketing standpoint, the Blue/Red Ocean paradigm has been around for a couple years now.  A lot of companies are using it to justify branching out into new areas, or removing themselves from others.  My company is also using this strategy to develop a new division.  As an employee, I'm intrigued by the concept.  But as a stockholder, I also a little worried.  The Blue Ocean theory only works if it is something that the consumer WANTS or there is a real market for.  You have to hope the 'higher-ups' know what the hell they are doing.

Did the RevMote re-define gaming?  We're all going to have answer that question, but not for a couple years.  Just because Nintendo says this is a Blue Ocean does not make it so.  The Revolution could be the Bermuda Triangle (to stretch an analogy).  I wish I could say I was more optimistic.  I have a feeling I will wait 6 months or for the first price drop to decide if I should get the Revo.

Always look for the Blue Ocean, but don't be afraid to mix it up in the Red.  Anyway, I thought this was supposed to be the AND console.
