TalkBack / REVIEWS: LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
« on: November 13, 2006, 05:26:36 PM »
Better than making lightsaber sounds in your room by yourself.

LEGO Star Wars II (LSWII) is a frustrating game to review because it is so much like the original, which I hold in high regard. Although this sequel does almost everything the original LEGO Star Wars did, it won't receive the same amount of praise due to design excesses that hurt the delicate balance of the original. In other words, LSWII just has too much gameplay. I'll explain.

The gameplay of LEGO Star Wars never won awards, and it won't here either. You once again guide blaster- and lightsaber-wielding Star Wars characters through linear environments directly lifted from the films, fighting stormtroopers and flying in space vehicles. Nothing has changed from the original game, but of course gameplay wasn't the reason people played it; you trucked through the simple action and puzzles to see the LEGO-parody locations and joke-heavy cinemas.

It was appropriate, I am seeing now, that LSW was a short game. The quick completion of each level encouraged you to continue playing until you saw everything. LSWII also has plenty to see, but unfortunately, the levels are much longer and larger. Since they are never difficult, they broach monotony while yielding just as many rewards (read: visuals) as the previous game. The developer promised that LSW's lack of difficulty would be fixed this time around, but apparently they decided that more numerous and more difficult enemies would do the trick rather than revamped game design. I did occasionally get stuck at a puzzle or have to think about something for longer than usual, but this was more a frustration at obtuse objectives than active involvement with the game. Something the developer did decide to revamp is vehicle play: this time around the vehicle missions are free-roaming as opposed to set on rails, yet the vehicles still move forward on their own and the levels are mostly linear. These missions are confusing, have weird objectives, and are simply not as fun as the original's vehicle missions. The one exception to this is the excellent on-rails speeder bike mission on the moon of Endor. Otherwise, consider the uninteresting gameplay of the original LSW not fixed here, indeed broken twice over.

There are a few additions to gameplay that appear to spruce things up a bit. Most characters have a close range attack when next to an enemy and their purpose is mostly humor: Chewbacca rips off the arms of enemy combatants (an action discussed but never seen in Star Wars), while Leia, there's no other way to say this, bitch-slaps them. Also, some blaster characters can dodge laser fire if you stand still during a firefight, and blaster characters can now build objects out of broken LEGOs in context appropriate situations. There is also a mode to create your own LEGO character out of LEGO pieces and use him or her (or it) in the game. All of these additions are either aesthetic or tangential and alter the game very little.

The graphics of the game should receive high marks, again not for detail or complexity but for simple comic beauty. The worlds are much larger and rendered even better this time around, while the cinema scenes reach a Pixar-esque level of humor within their short length. I do think there was more to make fun of in the first three episodes of Star Wars than in this trilogy, but the developers have still made the short level intros and outros fun to watch if you're familiar with the movies. The sound, on the other hand, is just as sadly utilitarian as before – the music is lifted directly from the films and played on a loop. The sound effects are also accurately recreated making LSWII's audio authentic, if predictable.

If the game can be saved, it is through its cooperative mode – there really is no other way to play this game, especially now that the levels are larger and the objectives require more teamwork. Although the camera is still mostly unmovable and too rigid for two players to share, the game's emphasis on humor and nostalgia make co-op the only worthwhile way to play, and for all its faults, it is still fun.

There's plenty to keep you occupied here, as the developer has added objectives to Free Play mode (where you can switch between LEGO characters as you play) and many new items hidden in each level. All of these will gain you some secret levels that are, truthfully, not that satisfying. But there are plenty of things to do for completists.

In the end, I recommend LSWII to those who really loved the original – for me, it was worthwhile to see all the cinemas and locations, and plenty of fun in co-op. It doesn't live up to the original by any means, but it should offer a good distraction to those with nothing to play. Rent if you can.

Pros:

  • Recreates Star Wars in LEGO
  • Great sense of humor
  • Lots to unlock

           Cons:

  • Over-abundant gameplay options bog down simple premise
  • Does not improve most of the faults from original game
  • Vehicle levels no longer on rails

                   Graphics:  9.0
Well rendered and detailed, the areas and animations in this game recall the Star Wars movies and LEGO pieces quite well. The art style keeps the game fresh.

                   Sound:  7.0
The score and effects are made up entirely of recordings from the movies; the game sounds authentic but is uninspired.

                   Control:  8.5
Aside from a lack of camera control, the game handles exactly as you would expect. Using the force and fighting with lightsabers is natural, if a bit slow and simple.

                          Gameplay:  6.0
With the vehicle missions no longer on rails and the levels longer but just as simple, the game takes a step back from the original's short and sweet gameplay. The new bits add nothing, and in some ways overcomplicate the ease of play.

           Lastability:  8.5
There are a lot of things to keep you coming back, like Free Play mode, hidden red bricks, and True Jedi status. The game is much longer than the original, but the added objectives are repetitive.

           Final:  7.0
With too many new features and identical gameplay as the last game, LSWII is hard to recommend as highly as the original – nonetheless, fans will enjoy it, and anyone who's interested should rent.

TalkBack / Radio Free Nintendo - Episode 25
    « on: November 12, 2006, 08:57:57 PM »
Special guests Billy Berghammer and Chris Kohler join us for this Wii Launch Extravaganza!

Then again, that would require mating.

It's not every day that you can get Chris Kohler, Jonathan Metts, and Billy Berghammer in a room together. In fact, I didn't get them in a room together - we all live in different states, so the intertron has to stand in for the bar we went to at E3 (man do I have stories I'm not allowed to tell).

Please note, my pretties, that the AAC version of this cast is filled with pretty pictures that change with the topic being discussed. I put a lot of hard work into selecting those darn things, so you'd better appreciate them.

So I hear Wii's coming out. Since I know nothing about this, I wanted to get the digs from the only three guys I know who actually have their own units already. Jonny, Billy, and Chris all got their Wii units on Friday and it was hard to convince them to put their WiiChuck's down long enough for this podcast.

So we talk about Wii, and we don't stop. We talk about the games, the packaging, the menus, the marketing, the players, the sales, like every possible thing you can think of about Wii. And apparently Zelda is still good - I look forward to the low score I will give it with no regard for its actual quality. There are no spoilers in this cast.

Anyways, e-mail us! Reader mail will be coming back, I swear. Next week tho.

    Later!

TalkBack / Elebits Will Release in December
    « on: November 10, 2006, 02:34:35 PM »
Game was never delayed, rather is being released in the "launch window."

After IGN reported that Elebits was delayed until December, we contacted a Konami rep to get the details. He told us that the game has always been planned for the "launch window" and those plans have not changed - terming this as a delay was incorrect, and IGN has since updated their news story. The Konami rep also stressed to us that this does not contradict the inclusion of Elebits in thelist of launch games given by Nintendo in a press release. Rather, as the press release indicates, this is a list of "launch window" games, meaning those without firm release dates may be released next to Elebits in mid-December, later than expected.

TalkBack / Disney Creates Nintendo-Focused Development Studio
    « on: November 07, 2006, 02:57:36 PM »
Fall Line Studio will create Disney franchise games and new IPs for Nintendo DS and Wii.

Although Buena Vista Games has published several Disney games for Nintendo consoles, it is interesting that Disney is supporting Nintendo so thoroughly as to create a new studio dedicated to DS and Wii. The new head of Fall Line Studio was formerly with Rainbow Studios which developed the THQ published Cars for  GameCube and Wii. It is very likely that from this point on we won't see Disney franchises, like Cars, outsourced to developers like Rainbow. In the same way, Disney support for Microsoft  and Sony machines may dwindle if Fall Line becomes their franchise flagship.

Buena Vista Games Announces Fall Line Studio

New Development Studio Focused on Becoming a Center of Creative Excellence for Nintendo Platform Video Games

BURBANK, Calif. & SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Buena Vista Games, Inc. (BVG), the interactive entertainment affiliate of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), today announced the formation of a new video game development studio dedicated to creating innovative games for Nintendo platforms. Based in Salt Lake City, Fall Line Studio’s focus is to develop games based on Disney’s characters, television shows and entertainment franchises as well as creating new intellectual property for the Nintendo DS™ and Wii™ game systems.

Built around a core of industry veterans, the studio will focus on small-team, creative projects that leverage the Disney brand in new and innovative ways. Fall Line Studio will operate as a sister studio to Buena Vista Games’ award-winning Avalanche Software studio, also in Salt Lake City, giving the company an advantage in reaching the strong pool of creative talent in the region.

Industry veteran Scott Novis will serve as vice president and general manager for Fall Line Studio. Prior to this position, Novis served as general manager of Rainbow Studios where he grew the staff from 30 to more than 200 employees. His experience in the video game business and knowledge of the industry will allow Fall Line Studio to capitalize on the power of the Disney brand and deliver innovative games for the mass market.

“This studio will be one of our centers of creative excellence and it gives us the ability to fully capitalize on our properties and expand our market share on Nintendo platforms," said Graham Hopper, senior vice president and general manager of Buena Vista Games. “Scott Novis brings the perfect mix of team building and relevant business experience to the position of studio head for Fall Line Studio. “

“The opportunity to grow a new studio for Buena Vista Games after success with Rainbow is right in line with my goal to create great games for the mainstream," said Scott Novis, vice president and general manager of Fall Line Studio. “BVG has an excellent management team, a can-do corporate culture and a treasure trove of great intellectual properties that make it exciting for us to start something new."

BVG has a strong reputation for creating games for Nintendo platforms and is the No. 3 publisher of Game Boy® Advance titles in North America. The strength of the company’s famous characters, Disney Channel properties and entertainment intellectual properties provide Buena Vista Games with an unparalleled deep catalog of content.

Nintendo handheld support likely, console support unconfirmed.

Although Take Two has been previously reticent to publish games for Nintendo systems, the following press release seems to indicate that at the very least Nintendo handhelds will be getting Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Console support shouldn't be ruled out quite yet, especially since Fantastic Four was featured on GameCube when it was published by Activision, but nothing is confirmed as of this time.

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. to Publish Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Video Game Based on Marvel’s Comic Book Series and Upcoming Movie

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), today announced it will publish Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, a new third person action video game featuring Marvel Comics’ legendary super-powered foursome. The game will be based on both the comic book series, credited as the longest running comic book series in history, as well as Twentieth Century Fox/Marvel Entertainment’s highly anticipated movie sequel.

The game is being developed by 2K’s Visual Concepts studio and Seven Studios for next generation consoles, current generation consoles and handheld systems. Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer is scheduled for a June 2007 simultaneous release with the upcoming movie.

Like, let's get this straight. I know we're considered a "fansite" by a lot of people. But Zelda looks so zomg amazing that anyone who thinks otherwise is seriously not a gamer. Why hate on something that looks so good? I'm not afraid to make such a harsh generalization, but since I work for Planet GameCube, I guess I'm allowed.

TalkBack / New Zelda Videos at Nintendo's Websites
    « on: November 02, 2006, 03:30:31 PM »
Videos showcase shops, dungeons, and Wii Remote sword swinging.

Following a two-day Zelda event held at NOA, Nintendo's marketing machine has kicked in: two substantial Zelda videos, and a variety of smaller ones have popped up on two Nintendo websites.

Short videos of Zelda have been included with each recent update to the Iwata Asks series, a Q&A session held by NCL President Satoru Iwata where Zelda has become the main topic. The English translations of the Iwata Asks sessions are lagging behind by more than a week, but on the Japanese site you can access these new videos that feature a dungeon filled with skeletons, a shop, a conversation between Link and a girl, and a strange bird-like creature with a human head that Link can hold as an item.

On Nintendo of America's Wii site we have been treated to a variety of Zelda videos, all of which are accessible on the main Zelda page; one of the two prominent videos shows the opening "pre-title screen" sequence, a Zelda tradition, and the other is a new trailer with more Link as wolf action, some implied romance, and story scenes from the game's cinemas. It also shows Link actually transforming into the wolf, an apparently painful procedure.

We're obligated to speculate about a couple of things seen in this video: one is an ominous creature (man?) who apparently kidnaps a woman (two guesses as to her identity), and the other is the final shot of Link grabbing the Master Sword which could potentially take place in a broken down Temple of Time.

Finally, below the two longer videos are seven short treats of people from different territories playing Zelda. Most people seem to automatically rest their arms on their knees while playing, and there is variety in their sword swinging technique. These last few videos are the most instructive; while they don't feature a lot of new gameplay footage, they do give a solid impression of what most people will look like while playing the game.

The Legend of Zelda and the Nintendo Wii will both release on Sunday, November 19th.

off topic: I must make two claims now: one, I was so a fan of Sofia Coppola before Lost in Translation ever came out, and two, I was so a fan of Scarlet Johannsen before Lost in Translation ever came out, and for her acting, not her boobs.

I've heard that Sony's new awesome game with guns is coming out soon, but who effing needs it? I have Red Steel!! And that new adventure game for PC? Gah, I get a Zelda game every three years, and Nintendo's generous to release one even that often! And what about that really artsy Xbox game? Well, Nintendo does artsy games all the time. I'll just sit here, wait for those ones to come out, and berate everyone who plays games on other systems because, after all, Nintendo does it better.

The podcasters ruminate on Clover Studios disbanding, Sega vs. Nintendo, and the great meaningless Wii Pre-Order debacle.

That game is Okami, btw. Between the time we recorded this cast and the day I'm posting this cast, I bought Okami and must say that everything Jonny says here is absolutely true. We got on the topic of Okami because of Clover Studio disbanding, which is absolute heartbreak to Karl. Stan and Jonny declare Sega lame while Evan and Karl furiously fume as fanboys often do. We also converse about Wii Pre-Orders just long enough to declare them dumb (hope we all get Wiis on launch day, otherwise we are turds).

This week's podcast was masterfully edited by Stan Ferguson. I point this out because his AAC version is bound to include funny pictures once it is played in iTunes. So I recommend heartily to all of you! Take advantage of all the work he put into this cast and listen to it in iTunes.

This is the Talkback thread for our new Wii FAQ. The focus of the FAQ is to answer questions for the uninitiated and non-gamers. Wii should be understandable, and we want to help. If you have any questions to contribute, or feel any of the information in the FAQ is erroneous, please post here.

The Podcast is old enough to drink! The hosts, meanwhile, are not. We talk about Wii this time though!

    The Podcast goes here.

Let's just say that this hasn't been an easy week. Karl hosts, thank goodness, and I get to sit back and be smarmy (a special talent I have cultivated for many days). We take a commercial break from me to listen to me interviewing Daniel Bloodworth about Activision, which honestly sounds a bit funny. I'm not so egocentric as to think the world revolves around me. BTW, here's what my Mii looks like:

A fairly accurate representation, all my friends say.

You can also listen to the podcast on Odeo.

I will reiterate: this hasn't been an easy week. We have had more technical difficulties than a Sony system launch, and we managed to ship a product that is only slightly less buggy. I do not say this as an apology, since I wouldn't ever publish a podcast that I could apologize for (at least, not anymore. Don't listen to episode 6). Moreover, I want to give kudos to Mike Sklens, Jonathan Lindemann, and Rick Powers for all coming through when it was needed, even though their efforts were in vain. Thanks guys, we owe you one.

This Podcast's topics are in the title: Blood goes in depth on the Activision Wii titles he got to play last week, and we comment on some Ubisoft racing wheel videos we saw here and here.

The people who pop the AAC into iTunes will be treated to a special picture from E3. So do that! In fact, subscribe to us on iTunes and rate us there as well!

Do you have feedback too personal for iTunes? E-mail us! Illicit love letters can be sent directly to me, however.

And for rizzo, stop doing drugs right now.

    TalkBack / Naruto Contest Extended!
    « on: October 09, 2006, 04:13:19 PM »
Haven't entered the Naruto contest yet? Well we've reworked the rules to make it easier to compete, and added some prizes to boot!

To make sure everyone had a chance to participate in the Naruto contest, and to provide extra incentive to enter, we have added a second method of entering the contest, extended the deadline to Monday night of next week, plus we have added FIVE AMAZING VIDEO GAME TYPE PRIZES.

First off, the second way to enter the contest can be found at our Contest page. Instead of recording audio for Radio Free Nintendo, you can merely write a script that we will perform on air!

But more importantly, what are the new prizes? Firstly, each of the three winners will receive one of the last, and I do mean last, PGC T-Shirts. These will include the E3 2002 DVDs!

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! One grand prize super-awesome winner will receive, I'm not joking, four of the electronic games. Like, as in video games. Yeah. These include: Mega Man X: Command Mission for GameCube, Battles of Prince of Persia for DS, Tomb Raider: Last Revelation for Dreamcast, and a SECRET game! Yeah, uber secret, but it's awesome. It's also old. But awesome! (It's Seaman for DC, with the mic included. But it's a secret!)

Please note that I did not find these games lying around in my apartment, and they are not unwanted. Rather they have taken control of my apartment and are currently lounging in my favorite chair.

Remove the infidels for my sake!

All the contest rules are still available at the Contest page. Enter now!

Mailbag Editor Steven Rodriguez, Trivia God Michael Cole, and I'm-As-Tall-As-A-House Daniel Bloodworth join forces to create CAPTAIN PLANET gamecube.

Let's not fight about things inconsequential.

Three courageous staffers decide to join us, two returning favorites (Steven Rodriguez and Daniel Bloodworth) and one brave newcomer: Michael "TYP" Cole. Their various expertise is....varietous? It has variety. Anyways, one thing we all have in common is our West Coast heritage and residence. Power to Pacific Standard Time!

Episode 20: The Madden Curse is Real

    AAC Format

    MP3 Format

You can also listen to the podcast on Odeo.

    powered by ODEO

In this Podcast Steven Rodriguez participates in some actual investigative journalism with regards to "THE MADDEN CURSE," something we have found to be very real and very frightening. (I myself, a potential candidate for Madden box-art sponsorship, am weary of my impending $500,000 deal with EA.) We also bring up Wii's play history feature, GameCube's Lost Gems, and wherefore the heathens ignore Xbox 360 and PS2.

I would like to take the time to remind you that the AAC version of the Podcast is enhanced - if you listen to it in iTunes you will get to view beautiful pictures corresponding with the Podcast's current topics. Also provided, at only a small extra charge, are links to coverage on PGC that may help clarify (or elucidate) our ramblings.

If you enjoy our cast, or even if you hate it, we want to hear your opinion! You can rate us on iTunes or send us an e-mail at our dedicated address:

So, why haven't you guys entered? Don't you want Naruto stuff? Let me say that that backpack is sweet enough to rig the contest for, but I won't be doing that because I have honor. At this rate, it will be VERY easy to overtake one of the top three spots on this contest, so even if you don't care about Naruto, you can at least care about me and record something awesome for the Podcast! Freakin' enter already! TEH CONTESST!
