The NPD told Joystiq that "some examples" of the 3DS titles that made the list include Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, Mario 3D Kart, Super Mario 3D Land, FIFA Soccer, Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games -- the last two on that list being February releases.
Per Joystiq.
Seems pretty cool.  Eight 3DS games in the top 25 even if none were in the top 10.

Even the Wii wasn't all that successful at it's beginnings.

Why do you say that? The Wii was sold out continuously for like the first two years of its life. There was no possible way it could have done better than it did (unless Nintendo had manufactured more).

The Wii is like the opposite of the PSP. The PSP had a terrible beginning, but then in the final years of its life Monster Hunter came out and the sales exploded in Japan. The Wii on the other had explosive sales from day one, but then in its final years it slowly declined until we are at where we are now where even the Vita is outselling it.
I thought we were all talking about the Japanese market.  My whole post was based on that.  It was definitely not sold out besides the first week or so in Japan.

In the US, the PSP was outselling the DS until the DSL came out and NSMB was released.  PSP did well at first in the US and then faultered like the Wii.  The Wii just lasted longer.

Chozo Ghost is right.  My guess is Sony with be very patient with the Vita as they saw what could happen with the PSP and all it needing is a good game or two to really catapult it to the top of the charts.

Even the Wii wasn't all that successful at it's beginnings.  I think the PS2 even outsold it a couple of weeks during its first months.  Systems usually hit their stride when the supply chain is well oiled and some really good games have been released for it.  It can take a year or even two somtimes.

Do any racing games online have 30+ human racers, or am I being naive again thinking it is something that is easily possible?
Most online games do not have this many (outside of FPS games).  I think 12-16 is easily doable though and If they work it out properly, I bet they could even get 24 without much problem.

So now that Assassin's Creed 3 has been officially announced for the WiiU, are there any rumors of the first four games getting ported to the WiiU as well?

1506
Sony is showing off more than just games.  They have tvs, computers, bluray players, etc.  They need more space for those different revenue streams.

I believe you're talking about the PS2 on that one.
Yep, fixed.  Thanks.

10 year lifespans exist.  Look at the PS2.  It's in its 12th year and it's still selling and making Sony money.  That means 10 years is easily doable, especially if they wait even longer to release the successor.

My hype level is extremely low.  I bought Mario Galaxy 2 and played it for 5 minutes.  I bought Skyward Sword and haven't opened it yet.  Part of it is because I'm so focused on family and my 2 year old son that I haven't been playing games that much.  Part of it is because I latched onto trophies on the PS3 and Steam achievements that any game that doesn't give me those loses it's excitement.

So if Nintendo announces an achievement type system for the WiiU, my excitement level will undoubtedly go up.  Outside that, it'll be until my son is old enough to play the games I like to play before I get hyped.

We are lucky to count among our –mostly anonymous - sources several foreign correspondants, some of them at key positions in the global gaming industry. We owe them, among other things, our early coverage of the Playstation Vita and Wii U hardware. One of them, who happens to be one of the very few Nintendo employees to dare break the code of silence, recently gave us a sobering account of the state of affairs inside the Big N structure.    More than any other sector, beit the music, motion picture, luxury or automotive industry, gaming is synonymous with emotional attachment to brands, devices and companies. And among all studios, publishers and makers, Nintendo enjoys by far the most sincere and dedicated following. Its logo, its many characters and IPs, its leading figures, like Shigeru Miyamoto, are the object of passionate scrutiny all around the world.
01net. writers are true Nintendo fans. One of us, William Audureau, recently published one of the most careful studies ever about the company’s most celebrated character (in French only so far). Our source has lived for, and eventually thanks to Nintendo, for most of his/her life. What s/he told us sounds like a wake-up call, inspired by the many troubles threatening the institution to which s/he has dedicated his/her life. For the same reasons, we decided to publish this information, as a five-part series running all week.
Part 1/5
3DS: the early bird who couldn’t catch the worm
We have known for a long time that the 3DS had been launched early to undercut the mobile industry, and the upcoming next-gen Playstation Portable. But this rushed release, probably partially responsible for its technical limitations and a disappointing battery life (when compared to past performance), will eventually have much graver and far-ranging consequences.

Ooops… I think we forgot something
It’s a mistake beyond belief, but Nintendo honchos finally had to admit, after the 3DS went through the mass production and release stage, that they had made a terrible omission: a right analog stick was a requirement to provide a superior gaming experience. According to our source, right as you read those lines, Nintendo engineers are spending many sleepless nights working on an additional device, which should be sold separately for about 10 dollars. Its shape and fixation mechanism are still unknown, but it needs a tight grip on the right part of the console. Will it have to be removed everytime you want to close the 3DS?

Feeling the pressure
Very recently, Nintendo asked a select group of developers to create titles specifically designed for two analog controls… even if that will entail an additional cost of 10 dollars per console to be played on currently available hardware. Although such noises rarely if ever reach the higher strata of the company, most Nintendo employees working with third-party developers are indeed feeling the heat, as disgruntled studios and publishers become more vocal in their disappointment.

Developers stand in line
Third-party support is key to the 3DS’s potentiel success. Only they can enrich the software line-up,
suffering so far from a relatively low volume of fresh titles, which makes Nintendo’s ongoing policy towards developers all the less coherent. The submission and approval process is described as very costly, time-consuming and often arbitrary in nature. Worse even, dev kits are still extremely scarce. Although no longer produced by Intelligent Systems – Nintendo’s hardware R&D arm – but outsourced to Tokyo Electric and Marubeni, dev kits are still produced at a ridiculously slow pace (300 units per month), and sold for a hefty price. As a consequence, even six months after the release, the waiting lists are getting more crowded, and many studios are still waiting for a chance to develop on the 3DS. This erratic situation is described by our source as a good example of serious management mishaps inside the Big N, that act as an impediment to developer relations and hardware adoption by consumers.

What you can’t see…
According to our source, Nintendo is well aware that it has so far failed to convince the public that its 3D display technology was harmless. Many parents are refraining from buying the console for fear of adverse effects to their children’s eyesight. This innovative “glasses-free” 3D display technology, the console’s main selling point, could well prove a major stumbling block. The advertising issue, despite a vast deployment of demo units at the point of sale level, remains: how do you sell something you can’t show? In the wake of the early price-slashing and “3DS ambassadors” (20 free VC games) program announcements, Iwata’s welcoming of 2D (totally free of 3D content) games on the platform smells like capitulation.
This information corroborates several elements we obtained very recently from various sources. According to them, Nintendo is currently preparing a new 3DS for a 2012 release. This new version would radically tone down the whole “3D“ angle, with a new design and even probably a different name. In that perspective, the radical price-slashing, touted as a measure to boost sales, would also be a way to liquidate current stocks to make way for the sucessor…

There’s a war raging on out there…
Some of the problems alluded to by our source could find a happy resolution, but let’s not forget the unrelentless assaults from the mobile industry, with its breathtaking race to the heights of computing power. Phone makers, like LG with its Optimus 3D smartphone, are even coming up with their own “glasses-free” 3D displays. If John Carmack’s predictions – of smartphones outgunning current last-gen home consoles in “a very short time” – ever came true, the 3DS’s future could seem bleak at best… but let’s not forget there’s always the next brand new Pokémon around the corner!

Just thought I'd relink this page as the circle pad came true.  So it is very likely they are correct about the 3DS redesign in 2012.

As someone who is just now playing Elite Beat Agents for the first time, I would be thrilled if this game was basically EBA with FF songs.
For shame.  I've given people copies of that game to play.  Saying that, would be cool if it was EBA Like but, I see it being more like DDR.
You think we are going to step on our 3DS systems?

1512
I agree with BnM.  Nintendo should be just dropping the price period. They should not be dropping the price in response to the Vita. That tells people they are scared of the Vita and Nintendo never wants to act scared.

1513
Nintendo will do what the 3rd parties do this generation as they want to cater to them. If they undercut the 3rd parties, the 3rd parties will not want to make games for the WiiU.

Online gaming is very important to us, and we've heard the demands of the veteran gamers that want that. So, we're going to be more flexible with online this time when it comes to online, we're going to work with our 3rd party partners. We're not going to have a centralized one type fits all approach, it is going to be more the publishers trying to figure out what they want to do and we'll try to bring that to life and make sure our platform can support that vision.
...
Hey this approach sounds familiar... Oh wait ITS THE GAMECUBE Answer.  PSO being the only truly Online game confirmed.

Seriously terrible approach. As a developer I rather have something Deep I could tap into and build off of.

Agreed. That's pretty much like having nothing. The blanket approach lets me not have separate IDs for each 3rd party. The 3DS was a step in the right direction, that would be two steps back.
Actually, that is the PS3 approach.  Sony has their PSN, but only Sony games run on Sony servers unlike Xbox Live where all games run on M$ servers.  It's why EA shuts down year old games with a new updated game available, because they don't want to keep supporting a game they aren't making money with.  It's why they went with the $10 EA online pass, so they could make a little money off used games that have online features.

I recently was gifted two original Gameboys.  I gave away my GBC so that no longer is here.  But I have every other system minus the VB.

This isn't a big deal.  It may force me to hook the GCN back up to the tv.  I'm glad I have one that can use the component cables. :)

1516
For $250, consider me onboard for launch. I never owned a PSP, so the BC means I have a lot of things to play right from the start.
I'm there as well.  Never owned a PSP but plan to get the PSV.  I just hope Square puts their shamefully omitted PSN games to the PSN before the VITA launches.

1517
Grrr, I can't get onto Playstation Home to watch the conference.  Stupid Sony not anticipating the demand.  Guess I'm staying on GTTV.

1518
Tintin actually looks like it might be a good little action platformer.

Oh boy, more Sims.  Now integrated with Facebook!

1521
At EA, we will possibly be your only form of football coming this fall.

1522
Heh, now you can flop like a real soccer player!

1523
My thoughts exactly. NFS is a racing sim, not anything for on foot play.

1524
They get up to about 2 GB, but not really any higher than that, at least that I've seen.
Mass Effect 2 is over 12GB and downloadable on the PSN.

I was referring to things designed as download titles. Download versions of retail games will of course exceed that.
But the question was about what the largest downloadable title was.  I'm pretty sure ME2 is it regardless of if it's a download only title or not. :)

But I think you're right that there hasn't been a title for DL only that exceeds 2GB.

I didn't realize I could pick it up on PSN.

Edit:
But both Mass Effect 1 and 2 are $20 each on Steam...
But will you get your trophies if you buy them on Steam?  I thought not. :P:

I love how they did that.  Here everyone, buy this game on PS3 for $60 when everyone else who owns a PC or 360 can get it for $20.
