I think it was more that their profits were down, not that they were in the red.

I also remember hearing that when the Gamecube launched they were selling it at a loss for at least 6 months.

I really don't think Nintendo is going to have many issues with 1st party title attach rate. They're the main reason people buy Nintendo consoles.
This.

It doesn't matter how many 3rd party games are available.  Nintendo games will sell regardless.  Having more games at launch is always better than having less.  Plus, the higher the attach rate for the system, the better the bragging in the press release about the system.

Vita still needs a game that everyone in Japan wants to have.  It needs its Monster Hunter for the new generation.

I'm anticipating more info on dev kits.  It's more stuff to build up the hype train!

Yes, I meant 1 or 2 games that you had to have.  Basically the Super Mario 64, the Halo, the Wii Sports, the game that you MUST be the system for.

And then 3-4 other games.  Heck my original statement said just 5-6 games...including 3rd party at initial day 1 launch as long as they had that must own title and next month there would be a continual stream of games.

I also think the 3rd party support which is bringing a lot of ports out would prefer an earlier launch it would be better for their ports to launch in September away from the holiday big new games for PS3 and Xbox360.  In fact with all the potential ports for the WiiU...it would be better to launch earlier and let them have a chance of success so that developer don't cry when a year old game doesn't sell on the system.

Except it sounds like Nintendo may lose money on the system, so they will want to have as high an attach rate as they possibly can.  That means at least 15-20 games available at launch.  That means not the N64 with Mario 64 and Pilotwings being the only games available.  If you wait a little and launch at or around holiday time, the attach rate will be much more to their liking.

Not that I'm really attached to bringing back Star Tropics but your reasoning for not bringing it back is just as valid as a reason to bring it back. If it would essentially be a new IP, what's the harm in bringing it back? Fans get to have a nostalgia erection while everyone else just thinks it's new. I don't really see how anyone loses.
I agree.  It could also lead to Star Tropics and Zoda's Revenge getting released on the Virtual Console to give more of the nostalgia.

Unless you're referring to the 3DS, those games are already on the Virtual Console.
How did I not know this?  Oh yeah, I haven't turned on my Wii in over a year.  And I haven't paid any attention to VC releases for even longer.

One of these days I will turn it back on and play Skyward Sword.  When you buy it you should play it.  That's what I've heard.

Wait, you said first that Nintendo needs 5-6 first party games, then at the end, they only need 1-2 killer first party games.  So which is it?

With no new generation competition this year, Nintendo will take their time and launch the system right.  Just because some fans of Nintendo think rushing the system out as soon as possible is the right move doesn't make it the right move.  Nintendo has learned from the 3DS launch.  They will take their time.

Except if no games are ready for it in the summer, then it'll flop anyways.  Really the launch depends on software more than hardware.

A two month difference in head start (whether 12 months or 14 months) will not make any difference in the long run.  If the games are ready and they think they can get a great attach rate at launch, they will launch earlier.  If not, they will launch as close to the holiday season as possible so they can get that attach rate up as much as possible.

I don't think Epic Mickey 2 moved to 3DS. I think the 3DS version is a portable, spin-off version of the console game. It seems the 3DS version has an extra subtitle. I think the console version will be mlti-platform, including WiiU. I wouldn't even be surprised to see bundles for multi-plat that include the original (maybe an HD version of it).
Yeah, I just noticed that too.  Guess I got all upset for nothing.

In regards to Epic Mickey 2, I'm not happy it's on the 3DS.  I got nothing against the 3DS, but I do not like it when sequels to console games go to portables.  I'd rather they expand it and make it for the HD consoles including WiiU.
I wouldn't care if it was a spinoff, but it's not.

I don't see WoW on the WiiU because I don't see Nintendo giving up control of an aspect of their system.  Blizzard likes to keep full control on their games and having to get approval from Nintendo when adding things to the game will make it nearly impossible to keep the WiiU version updated and so it would have to run on its own server completely separate from the PC version.

Any chance we can change our date?  Since we now know that the NextBox won't be out this year, I think Nintendo will wait until closer to the holidays.  My new guess is 10/28/12, a couple days before Assassin's Creed 3 is released.

Is eDRAM cheaper?  If so, will Nintendo listen to Epic and put 4GB in the WiiU?

1492
I wouldn't be surprised if they accept multiple codecs though.  It sounds like Nintendo wants to get as many streaming video services on the WiiU as possible (Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, etc).  Nintendo may require only one codec to use for game streaming though.

Edit: Nice post though.  It should put up some good discussions.

PS1 and PS2 were more popular during their generations.  DS is the best selling system of all time in Europe (and many other places) and I think the 3DS is the fastest selling system of all time.  The Wii outsold the PS3 and 360.  The PS3 has outsold the 360 there as well, at least according to Wikipedia.  So take all that with a grain of salt.

It'd be No More Heroes with a hot chick

No More Heroes had several hot chicks.
Not as the main character though.

Oh god if the Wii U could bring mainline FF back to Nintendo consoles... *swoon*
Technically FF Versus XIII is not mainline.  It's similar to FFXIII-2 only held in much higher regard.

A WiiU version would be neat.  I'm not getting my hopes up though.  Welcome to posting on the forums.

Saturn was more powerful in some senses, less in others.  It was a pain to program for (worse than the N64) but because of the RAM expansion there were games on the Saturn that were perfect ports, whereas on the PS1, they had to be modified.  This particularly affected fighting games.

Wii U has a modern GPU with modern architecture. The 4870 is more or less a 5770 or 6750 or 7750 with the lack of a proper tessellation unit.
And the GPU in the WiiU can easily be modified to do proper tessellation, though it may not be extremely necessary.  Tessellation is only just now being utilized more substantially in PC games.

For the person who mentioned Direct X 12, that is a product that is at least 2 years out as Windows 8 will be coming with Direct X 11.1.  So you'd have to wait for Windows 9 before 12 would even exist.  UE4 is DX11 based I believe.
