I do believe the worst case scenario is 20% better than PS360.  We learned that back in November before newer dev kits were released which we have heard rumored to be even more powerful.  So I guess depending on your definition of "marginally," you could be right.  I say that is a lot more significant than marginally more powerful, especially the rumored increase in ram.

I do agree with you that Sony puts out the games that I want which Nintendo does not make.   Sony's 1st/2nd party stuff is amazing and innovative and pushes the boundaries that everyone else sits behind.  I also believe though that if they had not fallen so far from grace compared to the PS2 that some of the games they have made would never have been made.  It's the same way that the games on the N64 and GCN were so amazing what Nintendo made.  They had to make amazing games just to stay in the game.

Now that I'm way off topic, I will say that unless Sony goes way overboard on the specs for the Orbis, the Japanese developers will probably make games for both the PS4 and the Wii U and the 720.  I do think that how Nintendo goes will be how the industry reacts.  If the Wii U is successful, games will be geared around the Wii U first and adapted to the other two systems.  If the Wii U fails, then the PS4 will be the lead console and gamepad controls will be shoehorned in after the project is finished depending on the remaining budget.

I do also think that something has to give soon.  Many of the so-called larger 3rd party devs are falling by the wayside due to the ballooning budgets for these HD games.  If they don't figure out a way to control these costs (whether through making less of the big games and supplementing them with smaller download games, or by finding a way to actually make the development of the games cheaper), we will see a lot more devs falls like 38 Studios and what will probably happen to THQ soon and possibly Sega.  It's going to happen in Japan as well.  My hope is this will lead to better quality games and less of them so that everyone buying games will have a chance to buy all the good games and not have to figure their way through all the crap.

Capcom has been selling locked content already on the disc for a few games now and they have had huge backlash against them for it.   I'd rather everything that was on the disc be unlockable in the game itself and leave the NFC stuff for added in DLC.  It's a way they can sell DLC both in store and online.  Online without the physical trophies.  In the store they sell the trophies that include an unlock for downloading the DLC or have the DLC in the trophy itself that then transfers to the system.

Hey, if we end up with an HD collection of DMC then we have me to thank for that.
It's already been released...on PS3 & 360.

Actually I would love that with some gameplay tweaks.  Imagine holding the GamePad up like a camera to take pictures...even if it isn't the most intuitive controls...it would feel pretty awesome.

And I love the idea of collections...however, these days more money is in releasing individual games as download titles...and not changing them.  I would imagine upconverting the original 2 games would actually be quite expensive.
If you've paid attention to either of the HD systems this gen, you'd know how incorrect you are.  I've seen so many hd collections of ps2 games this gen than any other gen has had previous gen's collections.  Also with Fatal Frame 2 already remade for Wii, I don't think it'd be that hard to upgrade it to hd.  HD upgrades really are all the rage.

The fact that M$ is doing this exact same thing with Xbox tells me this is viable and if Nintendo can pull it off, I think it'll only help their cause.  I use Directv so it probably won't work for me, but that doesn't mean I'm not excited about the possibilities this opens up.

iPhone OS upgrades don't screw over the people from the previous year. Hell, iOS 6 is supposed to do just fine on a 3GS, which came out three years ago
They are supporting 3GS, but I can say that IOS 5 significantly slowed down my 3GS, which is what my wife uses now (she's getting the new iPhone this year).  My 4S is running smooth on IOS5 and will probably do the same on IOS 6.  When IOS 7 comes out, I expect my 4S will slow down.  Each new version of IOS is optimized for the most recent hardware revision and it is shoehorned into previous versions.

But IOS and iPhone have nothing to do with the Wii and Wii U.  If they worked the same, the Wii would be able to upgrade to the Wii U OS and play its games.

Here's hoping a Fatal Frame HD collection for the Wii U gets made (of course, then it needs to get translated and released in the US as well). :)  All collection of all 4 games upconverted to HD and released in one package would be something I would pick up.  I never played any of them and a friend of mine showed me a bit of 2 which intrigued me.

Blue ocean did not exist to Sony or M$ when Nintendo started selling the Wii.  The Wii is a phenomenon taht is very unlikely to be duplicated in the same way.  Nintendo had the smart advertising campaign of "Wii would like to Play."  Fans of Nintendo bought the system and showed it to their moms and dads and grandparents.  For the first time in history, there was a system that everyone in the family could enjoy together all at once.  Those family members started telling their friends about it and so on and so on until everyone who wasn't a gamer wanted a Wii.  It was sold out for nearly three straight years because of that.

Wii U won't happen the same way.  It'll sell well right away.  The only way the legs continue is if the casuals enjoy the system together as a family as much as they did with the Wii.  I don't think that'll happen but the Wii U will be just fine.

Reggie is a PR guy, so its his job to make this clearer to consumers. But from what we've seen on Jimmy Fallon he doesn't seem to be doing a good job of driving this important fact home to people. He spends most of his time focusing on the Tablet, but its actually the console itself that people need to be sold on.
Do you really think that Reggie ignored the fact that Jimmy thought it was a Wii peripheral?

If so, you are wrong.  He corrected him immediately and made it clear that this was a new system with HD graphics and would have new gaming experiences that were not possible on the Wii.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Considering Wii U Pre-Installed Software
« on: June 19, 2012, 07:22:56 PM »
I really don't think it'll be preinstalled.  If the rumors are true and there is only 8GBs of space on there and a good amount will probably be taken up by the OS and MiiVerse, then nobody would want that extra space being taken up by this game.  We'd rather put it on an external drive or SD card to preserve the space I would think.

The idea that it was a download game and the Wii U taught the user how to go to the eshop and download it so they'd know how to get on the eshop and use it sounds like an excellent idea.

I'm still mad at Nintendo for not including a gigabit ethernet port.  I know you can get a usb adapter but unless the usb ports are 3.0, then it would be impossible to get gigabit with usb 2.0's 480megabit max speed.

Sigh, another gaming site that completely ignores the Wii U and does not consider it in the same generation as PS4/nexbox.

I think there's been at least 5 people in this thread who have outright said they would buy the game on release day, and that's just this thread.
Wow, that must mean that it'd project to as many as 12 people that would buy it on these boards.  Project that out to the entire Wii userbase and we're looking at a whopping 24 people who would buy it.  Call NOA now and let them know that it is worth it!

Captain Rainbow is as inherently "Japanese" as Tingles Rupee Happy Picking Land.   They should bring that out here too!

You know why the attach rate for the 360 is so low? It's because the amount of owners who have purchased more than 360 console because the last one red ringed is probably one in three, possibly higher. This brings down the games purchased per system average down.

The PS3 has a similar failure rate on its old PHAT model with its YLOD.
No it does not.  Small accounts on internet forums do not make up the failure rate of the 360.

Well, according to Brandogg the failure rates are about the same, and since he fixes consoles for a living I have faith that he knows what he's talking about.
Yes, one man says it so it's obviously true.  Despite the fact that he fixes a lot of them, that doesn't change the fact that the 360s made from 2005 thru 2008 were a lot more prone to failure than PS3s made from 2006 thru 2009.   I never said they didn't fail, but every study during that time showed the 360 well above 10% failure and ps3 right around 10%. This one done by Squaretrade in 2009 shows this. There are others as well.

GE is still the best offline multiplayer FPS created.

I know because I play games.  So obviously, that means my opinion is right and everyone else is wrong if they don't agree with me. /sarcasm

Honestly Capcom does not seem super keen on making non-portable Monster Hunters to begin with.
Tri on the Wii actually did pretty good.  It didn't sell like any of the portable versions, but it sold over 1 million copies in Japan alone.  That should count for something.

Marty, to put your argument of if a company loses money, they aren't doing it right into perspective, you are basically saying that all three console maker are doing it wrong.  All three lost money in 2011.  Sony and M$ both sited lower sales in their games division as part of the cause of the lost money.

This must mean that nobody is making games that people want (at least not console makers).

Just makes me sad there wont be an HD monster Hunter :(.

But I understand why they don't want to do it. They seem to be about building up partnerships more often. That and Im sure they understand they can't out bid Microsoft at least.
They don't want to do HD Monster Hunter? I needs a quote...
I believe they are actually working on an HD upgrade of Monster Hunter Tri.  Maybe he thinks that because they are only doing an HD upgrade, they aren't planning to do a proper PS3/Wii U Monster Hunter.

Please point me to the article that quotes Warren Spector saying he loved the new Mortal Kombat because of its violence.

I was clearly referring to the gaming media (for example, Shane Satterfield of GameTrailers' Invisible Walls podcast or the crew of the Giant Bombcast) as a whole when I spoke of that, not Warren Spector specifically.  Spector's comments just reminded me of it.

Quote
A year ago, this is the same bunch who were dancing in the aisles over the Mortal Kombat reboot because it was excessively violent and gory, but apparently now it's something we should all be ashamed of.
So this implies that Spector is part of "this...same bunch who were dancing".  The article was about what Warren Spector thought.  It was not about what the people that were super happy about MK last year thought about the violence shown this year.  I'm guessing those people that you were referring to probably do not share Warren's perspective, yet you imply it here.

I don't care for that at all.  I bitch about Nintendo's casual interests and how it feels like I'm neglected, but Sony and MS do that, too.  Videogames used to be this kind of geeky hobby, and then it expanded to be more mainstream, and now it seems like the original geeks are getting kicked to the curb.

Yeah, Sony and Microsoft seriously neglected your needs as a core gamer with such casual exclusive titles as Halo 4, Gears of War Judgement, Beyond: Two Souls, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, God of War Ascension, and The Last of Us.  And those are just the casual titles they had on-stage, with other 1st party casual titles like Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time also releasing this year.  Microsoft and Sony (especially) really sold out to the casuals this year.
I agree here.  M$ made it no secret that their main goal in getting into the console gaming business was to be the centerpiece in the living room.  Netflix, movies, being a media hub, is all part of that.  Seeing this stuff at E3 is pretty much what should have been expected.

If any of those 4 games were made 20 years ago, they would get the AO rating.  Spector is right.  There are too many violent games out there.  Yes, there are non-violent games as well, but the majority are violent now.

Please point me to the article that quotes Warren Spector saying he loved the new Mortal Kombat because of its violence.

It's funny, I didn't notice it until I read one review of E3 stating how amazed he was at the sheer volume of violence in the games at E3.  Then I went back in my head and reviewed what I had seen and I found I was getting desensitized.  The games they are starting to show are feeling like they are going for the shock value (a la Saw) rather than having it for a reason.  Tomb Raider and The Last of Us are more justified with their violence based on the stories they are telling and what they want to portray.  The other two and many other games at E3 were upping the violence just because they could do it.

I really hope that this trend starts to fade away like the Saw movies did and as other shock horror movies did progressively worse as the years went on after the Saw movies.

General Gaming / Re: Activision Blizzard possibly being sold
« on: June 14, 2012, 06:05:10 PM »
I disagree. COD isn't going away anytime soon. Each successive game is breaking the sales records set by the last, and the games are raking in literally billions of dollars for Activision.
Actually, while MW3 sold more on launch day than BlOps, at this point in its lifecyle, BlOps has sold more units and MW3 is actually starting to track slower than even MW2 at this point.  It will end up selling less than MW2 or BlOps in the end.  I would not be surprised if BO2 also ends up lower than MW2.

1198
CES or GDC 2013 will be the earliest they show the new console.  And even then, I expect they wait until CES or GDC 2014, especially if they don't plan to release it until 2014.

Looking at those LTD numbers for consoles, it looks like the 3DS will surpass the lifetime sales of the PS3 this year.  That's pretty amazing and probably shows just how much more important mobile gaming is to Japan than home consoles.

Off-topic comment:It's always interesting to Wii Music discussed and try to guess how many people complaining have actually played the game before (or even after) forming their opinions.  Most complaints are couched behind language that suggests people never gave the game a chance.

It's unlikely that the skeptics would be blown away by what Wii Music had to offer... but many of them might find the game is more interesting they expected if they gave it a real chance.
Very much correct.  90% of the people against it never even picked up a Wiimote to try it or even a demo of it.
