Nintendo Gaming / Re: AAA Titles...
« on: June 27, 2012, 04:01:40 PM »
Does this mean that Capcom is only working on 2 games?  Or have they decided that not all their games will be AAA quality?  I hope they tell us what these two titles are as I will be glad to avoid all the other games they deem to not be AAA.

I loved Mario Kart 64 at the time, but it really hasn't aged well. It had a lot of good tracks and battle courses, but most of those have been included in more recent games that played a lot better.
I think the battle courses are the only things I liked about it.  They were definitely better than the vs courses on DD or MKW I think (though I haven't played enough of the MKW ones, so I'll hold judgement on those).

Am I also the only one who liked Double Dash more than MK64?  Adrock mentions the infuriating AI, yet I found it the best of all the Mario Karts and much less infuriating than the 64 AI.  Am I the only one who enjoyed playing Double Dash?  It was so smooth and easy to feel the game.  The only MK that comes close is the DS version.

Am I the only person that loved Double Dash and hated Mario Kart Wii?  DD always felt like skill was more important whereas MKW always felt like it was the luck of the draw if you were to win.  And even though you could use the GCN controller to play MKW, it wasn't built for that, so the precision driving really meant nothing in that game.

I liked them both.  I owned more cube games.  Does that mean I liked it more?  Or that I had more money to spend during the cube era?

I feel like if they are truly happy with the sales they'd expand the availability to other stores like Best Buy and Amazon at least.

Well, either way, I talked with them about bringing the new game (of the same name) to the Wii U but also consider bringing the HD collection along with it.
So you just want all five of the games on Wii U.  I understand now.

I'm still quite happy to have a Wii instead of a GameCube 2.
But the Wii was a Gamecube 1.5.  So the Wii U is the Gamecube 2.  You don't want the Wii U?

Pikmin 3 controlled better with the remote/nunchuk, but every other game I played worked well with the GamePad, with some of the games on display (Zombi U/Nintendo Land/Rayman specifically, as well as others) using it in ways that make the game better that wouldn't be possible without it. Still, if a game would benefit from pointer controls, which a lot do, that should be an option.
We have to remember that Pikmin 3 was originally a Wii game, so it kind of makes sense that it controls better with the wiimote.

Some games, like RE4, were better with pointer controls and not necessarily waggle. In fact, I'm shocked that one didn't make the list at all since it's one of probably very few examples of the Wii version being the best version of a game.
Unless you count the HD remake for the PS3 which also has the pointer controls.

No, it doesn't.  From what I've read in reviews, the PS3 "HD" version of RE4 does NOT have Move support.
Really?  Guess I won't be buying that one then.  Worthless without Move controls I think.

It's interesting how some believe that Nintendo was taking chances with the cube and less with the Wii.  Then there are others who think the creativity came to a halt on the cube and was rekindled on the Wii.

Though when you think about it, the Wii was one of the biggest chances they've ever taken.

Someone pointed out in another thread that GCN had 16? games with a metascore of 90+ and Wii had 11 I think.  With the masses, even though the cube had less games, it had more highly regarded games.

This is all opinion obviously so there's no right answer.  Nintendo would tell you the Wii is better because it made them more money.   The cube definitely took more chances and unfortunately, that bit them in the butt and left the cube floundering throughout its lifecycle.  I'd choose the cube over the Wii for a few reasons.  One is that I never unplugged it until the Wii was in my house (BC).  The Wii has been unplugged since before I bought Skyword Sword (yes, I still haven't played it) and it hadn't been played for about 6 months before that.  I actually took the cube to college with me and got a 13" tv to play it on in my dorm room.  I have fond memories of playing Pikmin 2 on that screen.

The cube had games that I played from start to finish without putting them down.  The Wii has many unfinished games (including SMG2 which I have played all of two levels).  The cube controller is my favorite of all time.  I do enjoy the wiimote, but it doesn't hold a candle to the cube controller.

The Wii was definitely superior for some games.  RE4 was much better on the Wii.  The pointer controls made that game amazing and it saddened me when I had to go back to a traditional controller for RE5.  Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles were quite fun games and I played them with my wife.

I couldn't tell you which system I owned more games.  I do know I remember the games better from the cube than from the Wii.  I actually played a lot of cube games on my Wii before I had a lot of games on the Wii.

The Gamecube was better because it had the best controller in human history, whereas in contrast the Wii had the absolute worst controller.
I'd have to agree with at least the first part of this.  I still think the worst controller ever was the Atari 5200.  That one was horrible.  Wiimote is more comfortable than and NES controller definitely.

3rd parties didn't fill the gaps during the GCN days and all of a sudden the GameCube is so popular for what ever reason on these boards.
3rd Parties released a lot of games for the GCN in its first three years.  We got a ton of support during that time.  Nintendo's problem is they didn't know how to market their system.  They chose to go one route and the masses did not follow.

The reason why the GCN is popular around here is not because the system was successful.  Far from it.  I remember that there were constant complaints about how Nintendo was selling the system wrong and they needed to do more marketing and all that stuff.  What was not complained about were the games that they released.  Yes there were some droughts (including the normal one at the end of the console's lifecycle).  But 90% of the Nintendo games were well received around here.  The Wii has the opposite.  The marketing was amazing.  They sold that system to people who never picked up video games in their lives.  The problem with the Wii was that people around here were not enjoying the games like past systems.  So, they look fondly at the GCN because they don't remember complaining about those games.

My personal opinion was that I enjoyed the GCN more but mainly because I believe the controller to be the greatest controller of all time.  So any game that I could play with that controller, I would do it.  It's the only way I played Brawl or Mario Kart.  Give me a pro controller for the Wii U designed like the GCN controller and I would buy 12 of them (over a long period of time as I can't afford that many at once :)  ).

We haven't seen numbers, but I believe Nintendo's gone on the record saying they were happy with the NA sales for Xenoblade.
Does "happy" mean a million sales or 25,000 in sales or somewhere in between?

THQ going under is like Acclaim going under.  Aside from general sympathy to the lower-level employees being out of a job, what reason is there to care?  Acclaim made mostly **** games and so did THQ.  A company with **** product is SUPPOSED to go under.  That's a good thing.  It means that world is working the way it should be.

What upsets me is when a good company with a good product goes out of business.  Or when a crappy company with a crappy product succeeds.
38 Studios had excellent talent and made a pretty good game in Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning.  Their expectations for its sales were way too high unfortunately and it ultimately led to the demise of the studio.  Luckily, Epic has snatched up a good portion of that talent and made a new studio in that area.  So the talent will still work.  We just won't get a new Reckoning game from them.

1167
The problem is THQ has no good portions. :P

Wanted to try Curse Mountain but can never find the damn thing.

http://www.amazon.com/Cursed-Mountain-Limited-Edition-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002M6VSOM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340648443&sr=8-1&keywords=cursed+mountain

It is only $8.99 brand new with free super saver shipping, and this is the Limited Editiion of the game which comes in a steel book case (like Metroid Prime Trilogy does) along with the game's soundtrack and a "making of" DVD.

http://www.amazon.com/Cursed-Mountain-Wii-Nintendo/dp/B001P5HM64/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340648443&sr=8-2&keywords=cursed+mountain

You can also get the regular edition of the game for $9.96, but it is a dollar more and doesn't have the cool extras so there's no reason not to get the Limited Edition.

Everyone reading this thread should get this game, and I conveniently provided links to both versions of it so you can't use the "I can't find it" excuse.
Done, I bought the LE version.  I had looked at it before and just didn't want to buy a Wii game.  Your endorsement made me want to get it and at that price, I cannot pass it up.  Now I just need to hook my Wii up again to be able to play it.  Or maybe I'll wait til I get a Wii U and just play it on that.

I hope they learned from this.  I hope they learned that while these types of games may not net you millions of sales like a Mario game, they make up for those sales in good will with the core gamers and word of mouth about Nintendo listening to its gamer fans will get around and their rep can be healed in that community.

1171
THQ was always run by people who didn't know what they were doing.  The rising dev costs finally forced them to address this.  If they don't get people who know what they are doing, those rising dev costs will bankrupt them.

38 Studios got a $50 million grant/loan from the State of Rhode Island which was expected to be paid back mostly by the sales of Reckoning.  Reckoning sold no where near what was expected (I think they thought they'd sell at least 5 million copies in the first month and it only sold 1.5 million).  Dev costs meant they needed that much money to pay for the game.  Kurt states they were on the verge of securing an additional $35 million loan to pay for dev costs on a sequel to Reckoning.  They needed $35 million dollars to make a game with an engine already built and most likely many of the assets from the first game being reused.

If Reckoning had cost even just $10 million to make, they would have made a profit or broke even on it.  As it is, they lost money on it because it cost so much to make.  That's dev costs.  Whether or not they were spending the money properly is irrelevant.  They spent the money on dev costs and those were too high to make a profit on the game.

It's all about dev costs.

I would like to see something like this repeated with other games such Fatal Frame 4 and Captain Rainbow. Even if Reggie refuses to cave, he would at least be forced to conjure up some bullshit excuse and at least acknowledge these games do exist. Even if that's all that could be achieved that would still be a success of sorts.
Fatal Frame 4 did have something similar, just not as organized.  There is a fan translation of the game out there and if you have a copy of the Japanese version of the game and a jailbroken Wii, you can play the game in English.

As for Captain Rainbow, there isn't enough interest in any way, shape, or form to get any type of organized request for the game here.

TalkBack / Re: Why Nintendo Direct Was Better Than E3
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:45:20 AM »

No one single event has been able to top E3, but I think everything since E3 including Nintendo Direct collectively more than tops E3, and between now and launch there's going to be a lot of more stuff happening, so in the end even though E3 may be a significant single event, it still accounts for very little of the whole.
Weren't you saying that their E3 event was a failure and they didn't get the message out that the Wii U was a new system, not a Wii peripheral?  Now their strategy of releasing tiny bits of info at frequent intervals (which they pretty much said they would do before E3) is a good idea?  I'm confused.

Everyone said Nintendo screwed up the 3DS launch because the games weren't there (and the price, but that's beside the point). This time around, Nintendo wants everyone's expectations to be realistic so as to not cause a need to drop the price of the Wii U less than 8 months into the system's lifecycle.  This is one thing they fixed from the 3DS launch.

Hey, if we end up with an HD collection of DMC then we have me to thank for that.
It's already been released...on PS3 & 360.

I said "we" as in Nintendo gamers and more specifcally for Wii U and in conjunction/bundle with DMC3.

to keep it in context of the comment right before I posted it.

I'm confused.  DMC3 was a PS2 game and it was part of the HD collection.  Did you mean DMC4 or the new Dmc?
So your hope is that the DMC Collection is also released for the Wii U and includes (either with it or released beside it) DMC4 and possibly the new Dmc as well at the same time.  Is that right?
