It's about 50 bucks and seems to run homebrews fine. Too bad it needs an extra microSD card (1 GB card is like $30.00).
I've been wanting to try homebrews like the one that "turns" the DS into a PDA and others, without having to flash my DS.
I'm still unsure if it's worth the money...

I seen some 1gb MicroSD cards on Amazon for less than half that price. They are cute little things that are about the size of your finger nail, and usually come with an adapter that lets you use then in regular SD slots. Not real bad....

As for using the DS into a PDA, I did get one of those adapters for that purpose and I was quite disappointed. You get a virtual keyboard to type things out with a stylus, but it is very frustratingly slow. You can use it for web browsing in text mode (the DS doesn't have enough RAM for a modern browser), and there is some programs you can use to chat on IRC and MSN and so on... but over all I'd say this is really a neat trick you can impress your friends with, but it really isn't that useful for much else.

By the time you've purchased a DS, the adapter, and the cards you could almost get a real PDA and a mini keyboard. I mean, if the DS did come with a minikeyboard or had a usb slot to plug one in, then it would be very awesome as a PDA, but as it is it isn't really. Probably better off to get the Opera browser if you do need to use your DS for web browsing because that's better than any homebrew app right now.

General Gaming / RE: CONFIRMED: Halo 3 to be Wii-killer...

Why does everyone say Halo is the greatest thing ever? I haven't played it so that's probably why I don't really get it, but aren't there other FPS games out there? What is so special about Halo?

And yeah, Halo might be great without wiimote control, but imagine how great Halo would be WITH wiimote control... the gaming world might be turned upside down if MP3 turns out well. Maybe then this Halo-hype will cool down.

Well, Sony has been known to lie... and maybe they are just reporting shipped numbers like they typically do?

Nice to know.... lol.  I never took mine in the bathroom. Too much water and humidity in there for electronic devices.

I know quite a few people use theirs on the bus or during doctors appointments, or wherever else the waiting is long.

Square-Enix is proving that original third party games can sell well on Nintendo consoles. Hopefully other companies follow suit, and if they do then we could actually see a top 30 of games for Nintendo hardware in Japan.

4 games from dominating all 30 is frustratingly close.... it is within Nintendo's grasp.

R4 doesn't really play anything, it is the software which runs on it that does the playing. AFAIK it will play a variety of homebrew software

Store credit sucks... I am not going to offer you any advice on one thing or the other, but I strongly advise whatever you do you do it ASAP.

I had store credit at Babages before they went out of business or were bought out or whatever unexpectedly, and I ended up losing my credit. Gamestop is probably not likely to suffer the same fate anytime soon, but you never know... and $500 in credit is a LOT to lose.

Besides that, the credit they give you is a joke anyway. You're better off selling your games on Ebay or something for hard CASH. Credit is just a bad idea, in my humble opinion.

Looks like we almost had another complete Nintendomination of the top 10s in Japan this week.

It didn't do that well initially. Even in Japan it struggled with the PSP for the first few months.... and in the US it took even longer for it to pull ahead.

It is selling great now, so don't get me wrong (though in the USA it could still be doing better). My point was that it would have done better initially if people knew it was a genuine GB successor from the time it launched instead of being marketed as a "third pillar".

I didn't have a problem with it when they didn't call the N64 the NES64 (or the Ultra NES), so I don't see why they should have to keep the same name for all their handhelds, either.

I was a bit disappointed with the N64 name. I understand Nintendo wanted to include 64 in the name so consumers understood that it had better graphics than the other consoles of the time, but couldn't they have continued their naming conventions from the last two consoles?

It may have sold a bit better if they did. Probably not enough to make much of a difference, but it seems when you throw out the name of a product line and start a new one from scratch you have to spend a bit more work to build that new name's recognition up. If the N64 were named "Ultra NES", or "NES64", then everyone would know it was a continuation of the popular NES generations which came before it.

Same with the DS, really. If it had the Gameboy name in it and if Nintendo didn't talk about this third pillar nonsense, then it would have been adopted much swifter than it was. People look in display cases and see this DS thing and they think, "what the hell is this?". But if it has the Gameboy name in it then they can reasonably assume it will play Gameboy games and will be a direct successor.

So yeah, the DS is doing great, but it would be doing better and would be doing better earlier in its life if it had the Gameboy name to it... Just my 2 cents, though.

Considering how many people I know called it "Game Boy Advanced" with the "d" at the end Nintendo probably should avoid that naming convention again.  Typically company's don't like it when people don't get the names of their products correct and even people who owned GBAs were screwing it up.

I agree companies don't like it when people get their products' names wrong, but can that really be avoided? It is pretty much inevitable that when you have an abbreviation someone is going to start saying one of the letters stands for something other than what it really does.

That's a good thing about the name "Wii". It is so short that no one needs to abbreviate it and get confused. Nintendo should either use that or consider something like that for their next handheld if they are dropping the Gameboy name for good. Everyone hated "Wii" when the name was first announced, but it is actually something you remember and people talk about it, so it has fulfilled its purpose.

But "DS" on the other hand is a very unsexy name, and Nintendo should drop it next generation, in my opinion. It sells well and all, but the name could be better.

7289
The Gameboy name is NOT sexist or ageist. It does imply that the device is a boy, but that doesn't mean the people who play it have to be. There is no rule saying girls or older people can't play it....  it is just like how Mario is obviously an Italian plumber. You don't have to be an Italian Plumber to play Mario games. Same with the Gameboy.

So I would like it if Nintendo did resurrect the Gameboy name for the next handheld. It has nostalgia, you know. But if they don't, then maybe they can use the Wii name like Sony uses the Playstation name in their handheld? They could call it the "Pocket Wii", or "Wii Jr", or "Wii Portable".

7290
I really hope Nintendo's next handheld will bear the Gameboy name. It will probably have two screens like the DS, and they'll be touch sensitive like the DS, but the Gameboy name is just better than DS... it sounds better when you say it.

Plus it has a legacy. It has been around for about 20 years...

The more I think about it, the more a Punch Out game is what it will be. It makes perfect sense... the Wii-mote would be well suited for a boxing game, and it is very overdue.

Well, that or Kid Icarus. Either one of those two is what my money is on it being....

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii Zapper: how it might actually be good

I wonder if they could make a game that made use of BOTH the zapper and the body board. With that, you could be on some floating platform flying around and shooting at people.

Just like the Green Goblin.... think about it. That would be kinda awesome.

Well Nintendo handed them their butts this time around too, but at least this was in a more orderly fashion this time.

I like Sony's quote on that page where he personally doesn't know why they're doing it. Lol, if my company embarassed itself two years in a row like Sony has done at the last two E3's, then I'd be saying something like that too... lol.

Nintendo Gaming / The DS needs Game Show Games!
« on: July 14, 2007, 04:29:31 AM »
Is it just me or does the DS need some game show type games? I would love to see a wheel of fortune game, where you can literally spin the wheel using the stylus. The split screen would also be very useful because you could have one screen displaying the board and the other alternating between the wheel and something else. And maybe you could use voice recognition to call letters and vowels, or even answer the puzzle. Alternately, you could use the touchscreen to type out your answers in a virtual keyboard. This seems like such a great idea. So why hasn't this happened?

Also, where is "who wants to be a millionaire?", "Jeopardy", "The Price Is Right", and these many newer ones that they have now like "1 vs. 100". Heck, it would probably be cool to have a "fear factor" game....

But where are they? Whoever owns the rights to these shows could be profiting greatly with DS versions.... It seems like a missed opportunity.

Perhaps my most embarassing moment actually comes from Zelda as well... I had an insanely hard time in the beginning of Wind Waker swinging from the chandeliers in the time limit, even though I found the rest of the game to be nowhere near as hard as that... lol.

General Gaming / RE: PS3 price cut canceled! (effectivly)

Sony is more concerned with Blu-ray that they can't see that their Playstation brand is dying as a result.

They're just like Sauron who was so focused on Minas Tirith that they failed to notice an unassuming trio of hobbits bringing the one ring close to its destruction until it was too late.

In this case, I think Microsoft represents Aragorn and Nintendo is Frodo/Sam.... lol.
