General Gaming / RE: PSP Hacked - Play games for free!!

From what I've heard you can get the PSP to play its own pirated games. It's insane... but maybe that explains why no one buys PSP games (even though the hardware is selling well).

I wonder what it would take to make the 360 appeal to the Japanese market...

How about consistently making games which appeal the average Japanese gamer? They did make Blue Dragon and that caused 360 sales to jump for awhile, but they didn't follow through on that with anything else.

Microsoft has zillions of dollars in the bank so they could force out Japanese approved content by the truck load, but they aren't doing that. Instead they focus on Halo and similar games which appeal primarily to Western gamers.

The extreme rise in Wii sales has to be from when Nintendo ramped up production back in April or whenever it was. I guess it just took that long for it to have an impact... hopefully that holds out.

Btw, I got my Wii (finally) in July, so I helped contribute to that. :P

It's gotta be from the advancement of graphics. Look at how Mario has changed with each generation from the NES --> SNES --> N64 --> Present. Back in the 8 and even 16 bit days there was no lame voices and the resolutions were too awful to be considered "k!ddy", or anything else.

As graphics improved, developers were forced to decide which fork in the road they'd take their franchises in. Sadly, Nintendo and Sega chose to take their mascots in the more cutesy-poo direction. But Mario could have been some towering hulk with rippling muscles and beard stubble and sweat. They just chose to go the cartoonish route, and Sega did this as well. That's why Sonic is looked at as "k!ddie" now, but it didn't need to be this way and they still can change it at any time.

Get yourself an input selector. Then you just push a button to change your input rather than fiddling behind your tv with wires every time. I have one with 4 inputs. 1 for the dvd player, 1 for the Wii, and 1 hooks up to my computer's display output, and 1 is not being used at this time but I take comfort in knowing I can add something else with ease.

I think they just quietly cancelled that.  When DVD support was annouced the Wii was black, most people called it the Revolution and we had no idea what the controller looked like or that the console would be much different than the standard hardware upgrade.  It seems almost like a different Nintendo, like they hadn't finalized all the details yet.  Back then it probably made sense to have DVD playback and then they revealed that they wanted to keep costs down to have mass appeal and the extra DVD player cost probably got the axe.

These days the feature isn't important anymore anyway.  The only problem is that lying about the feature looks bad but most people will never know they did that.  The time for the DVD support was last gen.  Nintendo f*cked that up and that's that.

It wasn't really a lie if they meant what they said when they said it. Circumstances may well have changed and that may be why this isn't coming around. Besides, it isn't the first time Nintendo promised something they failed to deliver. Look at the disk drive thing for the N64, or online play for the Gamecube. Both were promises Nintendo failed to deliver (well, in any meaningful way at least).

Also, is there any direct quote of them making the promise that there would be DVD support? I can only recall them saying it *could* be added with a dongle, but not actually promising that would for sure happen.

In the end, all companies make promises they fail to deliver on. Nintendo is still more honest than its 2 competitors at least.

Just imagine the head of the Disney corporation saying the same about Mickey Mouse....

Although, to be fair, Mickey Mouse was never cool. Sonic, on the other hand, used to be back in the Genesis era.

What is this guys problem? Seriously? Did something traumatic happen to him while he was playing space invaders as a child?

In any case, he is fun to have around and his lawsuits are invariably dismissed so he isn't really any threat.

I completely agree. In addition, you probably don't want to wear your Wii out running 2 hour movies all the time. Normal use of disc drives causes wear and tear, and a Wii is a lot more expensive and harder to come by than a $20 DVD player...

So even if the Wii had DVD playback, I wouldn't use it. A better solution would be to allow movies to play off of SD cards and/or a hard drive. I would make use of that by ripping my dvd collection to that and watch them on my Wii that way...

Ubisoft has always led the way in third party innovations on Nintendo hardware. Maybe this is going a bit too far, but time will tell.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii + DS = Next Handheld?
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:50:03 PM »
All Nintendo needs to do is have a miniature wii-mote type stylus for the DS2. It would be like the big wii-mote, but obviously it couldn't have as many buttons because it would be tiny. It could however, also be used as a traditional stylus and would dock into the DS and charge inside of that dock.

Digital clock? Man, I've got one of those on my Cable box already. Couldn't they add a grandfather clock or something with a cuckoo that comes out to announce the time?

7263
Sony should probably be prosecuted for fraud, and one of the ones who should be suing them is Sega. The Dreamcast was killed off by Sony's lies about how great the PS2 was. Don't they also "cook the books" over how well their hardware sells each month? And then you have them stealing Nintendo's innovations (but I suppose that was legal)....

Even the Gamecube wasn't THIS pathetic. I mean, the GC didn't have as many games, nor as many *great games* as PS2 or Xbox, but it did have some awesome multiplayer games like Smash Bros. which meant very little dust collectage.

Well, I'm glad to hear it. For awhile I was worried this revision was going to help them overcome the DS in sales, but now it doesn't really worry me. It appears to mostly be a cosmetic tweak... just like how the PS2 slim was still basically the same as the original PS2. That's really stupid too, because the PSP didn't need cosmetic tweaks considering how sexy looking it was from the time it launched.

General Gaming / Sega Gamegear Discussion Thread!
« on: July 21, 2007, 08:15:57 PM »
The Sony thread mentioned the Gamegear as being the longest lasting non-Nintendo handheld of all time. The PSP has outsold it so far by more than double, but the Gamegear still holds the record in longevity. It came out in 1990 and Sega didn't fully pull the plug on it until 1997, although you could probably make the case that it was essentially dead in 1995.

Even after Sega dropped support of it it was picked up by Majesco and remanufactured for awhile until 2000. I think even now there are probably some Gamegear like hardware being made with the pre-loaded games as opposed to cartridges...

Anyway, I actually have a Gamegear. It did seem like such a "cooler" thing than the original Gameboy to me, because it had the color screen and all.. but I never played it that much. All the talk of it being a battery hog are true. I think it took like 6 AA batteries! And it at those up pretty quick.... but it did have some cool accessories like that tv tuner and so on. I never got that myself, though.

I believe when I got mine it came with some baseball game (which was okay) as well as a Sonic game (which was also okay). I picked up a handful of other games for it, but I can probably count my entire library on one hand. It is down in the basement somewhere where it has say untouched for many years. I don't know what games I got, but I know one of them is Bram Stoker's Dracula.... I loved that movie back when it came out, the game was terrible, though.

But anyways, there just weren't many great or interesting games for it. There was nothing like Tetris, Metroid II, Wario, Kirby, or any of the many other great Gameboy games for it. The color screen looked nice, but it couldn't make up for the low battery life and weak library of games.

In many respects the Gamegear really was the PSP of its day. I can imagine there are probably many kids out there now who are just like I was back then, who own both the DS and PSP handhelds but get much more play out of the graphically weaker one just as I did with my Gameboy.

Anyways, what do you guys think about the Gamegear? I'm mildly interested in expanding my meager library of games for it, but that's only if the prices are cheap and if there are any gems. Anyone have any recommendations?

True. The PSP has been far more successful in every respect than any other Non-Nintendo handheld to date, and that really says something. The Gamegear was the only other serious contender, and they've got them beat.

However, they didn't crush Nintendo's dominance of this market, and with the the way things are going it seems likely Nintendo will dominate the next handheld generation as well. Backwards support is the key.

This is just one more sign that Nintendo is going the way of Sega. I mean, look how weakly they rank in this top 10 list. The only one doing even more poorly than them is "Takeda Pharm", and I've never even heard of them.

Nintendo needs to drop its hardware division and start developing for more popular consoles if it is ever going to dominate that top 10.

/sarcasm off.

7272
Sony fans acknowledge the poor performance of the PS3, but they insist that it will pull ahead eventually. After all, Sony has stated they are in for the long haul and that it will have a 10 year life.

Whether this is true or not is anyone's guess, but Sony fans buy it.

I don't think is hate, is simply shock, the game has to be good or it wouldn't have such mainstream presence, bad games can sell, like that fifty cent game, but that game is considered a joke. Halo sells and is constantly mentioned, there has to be something about it.

But honestly with halo theres just isn't anything special about it, the more I read about it and the more I see gameplay footage  the less I see anything original, fun or interesting, at this point I'm going to end up playing the game trying to find out what the hell is supposed to be so amazing.

That's what I mean... I honestly don't doubt it is a great game, but what is there about it that makes it 100x better than other FPS games?

If there isn't anything then it must be doing so well because of hype and the bandwagon effect. I must confess that hearing everyone else raving about it makes me want to try it, but there are no doubt other FPS games that are just as good that don't get that hype and you just never hear about...

It only has 4mb of RAM (if I'm not mistaken). The Opera browser adds more RAM by plugging an expansion into the GBA slot. Otherwise the DS just couldn't handle it...

So with those homebrew adapters there are some browsers available right now, but AFAIK they are all text based ones. That's not too bad for reading text and stuff, but don't expect to be watching videos on Youtube with a homebrew browser.

OMG! You just imagined an awesome idea for a puzzle game.

Pieces of strange shaped/colored poo falling down and having to be rotated around so they can fit down a pipe. Who wouldn't play that? And it could even star Mario as the plumber who has to fix things when you screw up.
