broodwars already said it.  Nintendo games.  But if you're not excited about 2D Mario, Pikmin and games like Nintendo Land - not to mention knowing that you're going to get a great quantity of games from Nintendo like we've gotten on every single other Nintendo system (outside of the Virtual Boy) - and you're not interested in the GamePad, then there's no reason to get a Wii U.  Nintendo's changed, you've changed, relationships change, couples grow apart and move on.  Maybe it's time for you to move on.

The relationship could be made to work. All it would take is a little compromise...

Probably he was referring to stock value, which is true. However, that's not the same as the actual assets of Nintendo.

Yeah, in terms of actual money in the bank, Nintendo's got a lot more cash now then they had before they released the Wii.

This is good, because if the Wii U fails then it won't be a death blow for the company. That said, I do want the Wii U to fail because it would be a wake up call and it would force them to reconsider their focus and start catering to their core gamers. They have enough money in the bank that the Wii U could be a total disaster, but the company would still survive, and my hope is Iwata and Reggie would face a vote of no confidence and replaced by someone who will steer the company back on course.

The GamePad is the thing that sets the Wii U apart from the PS3/360.

But what is the thing that will set the Wii U apart from the PS4/420? We all know Sony and Microsoft are copying the idea as we speak, so what will the Wii U have that sets it apart from its 8th generation competitors?

Did Sony have that problem when they made the PS2 and PS3?

Of course not, because the PS2 looks VERY different than the PS1, and the PS3 looks very different than the PS2.

Also, having the console numbered sequentially is a very clear indicator that its a successor and not just a mere revision. Your analogy is bullshit because Sony didn't make the PS2 look exactly like the PS1, nor did they name it "PS U" and then. If Nintendo made the Wii U look different, as well as naming it "Wii 2" then there would be no problem with confusion.

So don't roll your eyes at me. I think Ooohboy was right about you.

If the 3DS can get beyond this the WiiU certainly will.

The thing is, its difficult to fully measure how much market confusion played into the 3DS' slow start. There was also the matter of the price and the lack of games, so there's no single explanation for it, but rather a combination of all of them. Sure, the lack of games effected the 3DS, and so did the price, and maybe those reasons were more significant than market confusion, but we can't say market confusion wasn't a factor at all, because it probably was... we just don't know how much it mattered because there's no hard data on that.

Also, you say the 3DS got "beyond that", but who knows if it fully has? There's no doubt its selling a lot better now thanks to the price cut and more games, but I wouldn't doubt there are still a lot of uninformed consumers who would assume its just a mere DS revision ala DSi or lite. Sales are doing well know, but who can really say that market confusion still isn't a factor? Maybe even though sales right now are good, they would be even better if it was clearer that the 3DS was more than a mere revision? Again, there's no hard data one way or the other so the best we could go on is anecdotal evidence. What do average people on the streets think? If they aren't informed gamers odds they won't know.

And also when you say the 3DS "got beyond that", keep in mind the drastic measure Nintendo had to take in order for that to happen. Is that something they can afford to do again with the Wii U so soon after launch? The current Wii is $149 if I'm not mistaken. Isn't the Wii U's price supposed to be $349? It will probably something around that.

That said, the Wii U will cost $100-$200 more than the Wii, yet it looks exactly the same as the Wii and has almost the same name. What will casuals think when they see both side by side on store shelves? Wouldn't they just assume the tablet thing is the only difference? A $200 tablet controller and maybe HD output? Yeah, I'm thinking sales are going to be adversely effected by market confusion. I don't know what Nintendo was thinking, but I don't think this is going to work out very well for them.

Now with Wii U there is no compromised version of anything,

But remember, these are PS360 ports. Back in 2006/2007 when the Wii launched there were last gen ports of things like RE4 which were not compromised versions in any way. Eventually the last gen consoles die off and new ones take over, so after a year or two the Wii ran out of PS2 ports because PS2 development ceased and moved on to the PS360. From that point on ward the Wii either got compromised ports, or nothing at all.

That's what I'm worried about with the Wii U. Assassin's Cred, Mass Effect 3, Arkham City, and so on may be superior to the PS360 just like the Wii version of RE4 was superior to the GC/PS2 version. That's to be expected... but what about a couple years from now when the PS420 hits? What will the Wii U ports be like then? Will they be compromised? If the PS420 is a full generation ahead, then they most certainly will be.

The fact the Wii U version of these games smokes their PS360 counterparts isn't impressive. The Wii U is supposed to be a full generation ahead, so this is to be expected as a given. The real test is how the Wii U ports will stack up to their 8th generation counterparts. Will they be on par, or will they be compromised? That's the true question right there. If they are compromised then its just going to be the situation with the Wii all over again. Many 3rd parties may decide to not support the Wii U at all if they would have to compromise their games in order to shoehorn them in.

The chips get smaller over time due to Moore's law. Its not like they have to bust their ass to figure out how to shove all of that together in as small of a space as possible... because due to Moore's law the chips will just get smaller on their own. You don't have to go out of your way to make a smaller product that runs cooler. It will just happen naturally pretty much.

If Nintendo would've waiting to show the Wii U until this year, they would've run the risk of MS showing off their **** first. And let's not forget the number of leaks we got about the controller. The cat would've been out of the bag had they waited. Plus, they wouldn't have **** to show in 2011. I mean, aside from the dozens of Wii games we got.

I don't think who shows their system off first is really important. Whoever launches first is what really matters... showing off first means nothing if the product is vaporware or won't launch until sometime way into the future. Duke Nukem Forever "showed off first" way back in the 90s, and what good did that do?

I agree with you that they needed to have something to show off at E3 2011, though. If I was running Nintendo I would have pushed Xenoblade Chronicles and the other Operation Rainfall games at E3 2011. Then again, if I was running Nintendo I would make a lot more of an effort to ensure there is no content droughts so that I don't even need to grasp at straws to fill a void.

On top of that, you still haven't explained why Nintendo should abandon a strategy that is clearly working.

Its not working. If it was working the Wii wouldn't have had such a severe software drop or sharp drop in sales from 2009 to the present. The Wii performed extremely from its launch until 2008 or so, but after that its been more or less stagnant.

If you call that "working" I don't really know what else to tell you, but personally I don't think its working.

My expectations were low, but I was still disappointed, because even my low expectations were not met. Where the hell were the games?! I thought 3rd party support was going to be a huge leap forward from the Wii, but what was revealed was pretty much the same level of support that we've seen for the Wii's launch back in 2006. Ubisoft was the only 3rd party which came through and offered the level of support that should be given, but I believe that was also the case back in 2006 with their Raving Rabbids and Red Steel and so on. So I got the impression that nothing has really changed.

I was also disappointed they are making the appearance of the Wii U identical to that of the Wii. I wished they would change the name, but I didn't expect them to do that so I wasn't disappointed... but I did expect they would shake up the appearance of the console a bit to... you know, make it stand out from the Wii. But no, they seem to be intentionally trying to make it as confusingly similar as possible.

I kinda wish Kytime's prediction of the name changing to "Super Wii" had come true. I'm not a fan of the "Wii" name period, but at least "Super Wii" would clearly indicate its a new and better product to the current system. "Wii U" is not only stupid, but it's confusing. Uninformed consumers will just assume the "Wii U" refers to the tablet controller, and the Wii U system (which looks identical to the Wii) is just a Wii revision that tacks on HD support.

Every single member of this site knows a new Nintendo console is coming out later this year, but how many in the general population know that? How many soccer moms or grandparents know there is a new Nintendo console this year? They know the Wii because its become a household name, and they may own it themselves... but they don't follow gaming news or watch E3 like we do.

I predict what will happen is during the holidays they will walk into their local retailer and see these new Wii games such as "New Super Mario Bros. U", "Nintendo Land", "Pikmin 3", etc. And they'll be thinking "hey, this will make a great Christmas gift for little Billy!" So they buy the game, and on Christmas day Billy tries to play the game on his Wii but it doesn't work.

I expect Nintendo is going to receive a **** storm of backlash for having made this new product so confusingly similar to their last. The thing is, there's no way this could have been an accident. They had to have deliberately intended for it to look and sound the same as the Wii. Even the logo is pretty much the same... the only different being that little blue {U} thing that will be easy to miss or over look.

My question is how does this benefit Nintendo? The uncanny similarities couldn't be anything but intentional. But why? What does it gain them by confusing non-gamers? I can understand the desire to retain a popular brand name, but why make the console look identical and be the same color? Why make the logo almost the same? Why make the cover art of the game cases look similar? None of that gains Nintendo anything. It only confuses non-gamers who won't know any better, and it will blow up in a public relations nightmare. That's what I predict is going to happen.

Nintendo's message to the fans is that they're going to keep down the same path.  Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual fan.  It really seems like the 3DS and Wii U are going to be incremental upgrades to the DS and Wii without any real change in approach.

It also doesn't help that the Wii U looks almost exactly the same as the Wii, and the name is also certainly very similar. I know there's the saying that "looks can be deceiving", but aside from the Wii U being HD and having a new fangled controller is it really any different?  Nintendo made the product so deceptively similar in name and appearance that consumers are going to be confused about this actually being a new product. They will look at the controller and recognize that as something different, but they will probably assume its just a peripheral to the Wii that they already own.

Should we start taking bets on if the Wii U ends up being like the 3DS in that it fails to sell and then Nintendo is forced to slash the price after only a few months and then they launch a "Wii U Ambassador" program and give a bunch of virtual console games to those who had just paid full price for their Wii U? Because I can see that potentially happening.

CoD is the biggest thing right now but next gen it most likely won't be.  The biggest games in the previous generations usually do well but are not the end all be all they were previously.  If CoD isn't the biggest thing next gen as expected it will suffer more than most because of the yearly sequels that will quickly saturate the market and its reliance on multiplayer to keep bringing everyone back to play with their friends.

I disagree. COD isn't going away anytime soon. Each successive game is breaking the sales records set by the last, and the games are raking in literally billions of dollars for Activision.

While it is possible the popularity could eventually decline, its not going to decline so much that they will pull the plug on it within the next 5 years. It may not be the most popular franchise next gen, but it will still be popular enough that it won't be going away.

Maybe the lack of storage is the reason why EA hasn't announced Battlefield 3 for the Wii U? A year ago there was a lot of talk about BF3 coming to the Wii U, but now E3 has come and gone without it being mentioned, so it probably isn't going to happen. From what I understand BF3 is a very DLC heavy game and EA is milking the crap out of it with downloadable content left and right. Maybe the fact the Wii U only has 8gb of storage is the reason they decided not to bother porting it over?

Nintendo is incredibly purchase-averse. Why would they spend the tens of millions on Activison when Retro Studios was bought for only $1m?

Because the COD franchise is worth billions, so if it can be procured for tens of millions then that is a super awesome deal. That said, if anyone does buy Activision its probably going to cost a hell of a lot more than tens of millions.

Actually, Nintendo pretty much said this like 2 or 2 years ago when they said they are gonna stop showing games that are not close to completion. I can't blame them, I don't really want to see a game that won't be out for like 2 years.

They should have applied that same policy towards their hardware, instead of unveiling the Wii U over a year ago and thus giving the competition ample time to start ripping it off. If the Wii U isn't coming out until 2012 then it shouldn't have been revealed until 2012.

Still, I'm personally probably never going to need more than the 8GB because I'm not downloading anything but patches and firmware updates.

That still might not be enough, because I know from experience on the PS3 that patches can frequently be hundreds of megabytes in size, or even gigabytes in size. The worst example I can recall from memory was the patch for Battlefield Bad Company 2 which was like 2 gigabytes or something like that. The reason the patch was so huge is because EA bundles their DLC in with it, so even if you have zero interest in buying that DLC you still have to download it anyway just to be compatible with the other players who might have it.

Do you see what I'm saying? When you start dealing with patches that are hundreds of megs or 1 or 2 gigabytes then that 8gb is going to be eroded real fast, because even if you don't buy DLC its going to be required for you to download it anyway for compatibility reasons.
