If Nintendo went with the original PlayStation deal, then of course SEGA would have at least survived the 2001 era of consoles, since Nintendo would have been their only competition.

What about 3DO and Atari? Historically they were driven out of business, but if the Playstation had never existed their fates might have been different too.

Why are you arguing with me? I wasn't the one who first used the word obscure. Cedric did. And considering he's 29...I guess even if you played with them as a child they're still obscure.

Chill out dude. You always sound like you're pissed off... just relax.

You know that the PSP only had one analog nub, right, and that that nub made for some less-than-comfortable gaming, right?

To be fair, the PSP didn't have a touchscreen or gyrometers or whatever either. I think Oblivion was trying to make the same point that Miyamoto was that "when you have that other stuff you don't need dual analog".

I don't agree with that, though. I like dual analog and I agree with you it should be integrated into the handheld by default. If developers don't want to use it that's perfectly fine. Nintendo isn't going to force them. But having it there as an option does no harm to anyone, and I think it will be needed for when the 3DS is going to start being promoted as a fill in for the U tablet. Because the U tablet has dual analog, so for the 3DS to be able to fill in for that role it needs it as well. That's the one reason why I'm confident this WILL happen, regardless of what Miyamoto is saying.

The reason you want them to be standardized and system wide is so that all your online buddies/friends can be able to see them. You should be able to click onto one of your friends/buddies on the Wii U and pull up their profile and through that be able to see the achievements they've done, and they should be able to see yours as well. Having it being system wide puts it all together and helps it be more organized and easier to access.

« on: June 13, 2012, 12:12:07 PM »
As Adrock said, without internal storage you can't have firmware updates, so for that reason there can't be no internal storage at all. Even the Wii had its paltry 512mb of onboard storage, so for the Wii U to include none at all would be a huge leap backwards.

There WILL be some for sure. The only questions is how much, and if there will be hard drive or just flash.

Let me introduce you to a little system called the 3DS and a game called Mario Kart Seven.

Patch is installed on the memory card.  Required to go online.

That's a patch for a game. Patching the firmware of the system itself is a different matter.

I dont think Mystique's Custard's Revenge will be coming to Wii U

It won't come to any console because no console manufacturer allows for AO rated games, and AO is definitely the rating Custer's Revenge would be assigned by the ESRB.

If you put too many requirements on developers they may just decide to not support you at all.

And yet developers still eagerly support Microsoft (despite Achievements being mandatory this entire generation) and Sony (whose trophies became mandatory in 2009).  There's Steam Achievements on PC, too.

Brood, I don't think it only being optional is going to have much of an impact on how many games on the Wii U support it, and I will tell you exactly why: because in the case of multiplatform games the work for the achievements is already done. They can reuse the art from the other platforms and just copy and paste it into their Wii U port as well. So it would be a trivial thing for them to implement. Its not like they would have to make new artwork or whatever for each console. They just do it once, and then reuse it over all of them. Or they could just cheap out and use some generic artwork for every single achievement. I've seen a lot of games on the PS3 where every trophy shares the same image, which sucks, but at least its better than nothing I guess.

The only time where this might be a problem is in exclusive Wii U games which aren't multiplatform, so in those cases they can't copy and paste them from the PS360 version. But we all know 3rd party exclusives on Nintendo hardware are few and far between.

So the bottom line is even though in theory the feature is only optional, I think in practice it will be used in most cases. You also should take into account the pressure fans might put on developers to include them.

You quoted the first sentence of my post. Did you even read the rest of it?

I know exactly what that feels like. Someone did the same thing to me just yesterday.

Nice try. The irony is that you clearly missed this:
As for the rest of your post, not surprisingly, I disagree with you.
I acknowledged that I read your entire post because I read your entire post. Seriously now...

No, I didn't miss that "as for the rest of your post, I disagree" which was a cheap way of dismissing what was a really lengthy post where I thought I made some really good points.

Its no biggie though... I just thought it was funny because then you call me out on doing it today which I thought was hypocritical. :)

I'm glad they are including the option for trophies, but with that said I'm also glad they aren't forcing developers to use it if they don't want to. Sometimes its nice when games have achievements, but I don't think it should be forced. I think this was a good move on the part of Nintendo.

I was worried the Wii U wasn't going to have any achievement system at all, so this definitely puts my mind at ease that it is there as an option. Would it have been better for gamers if it was mandatory that developers use it? I don't know about that. If you put too many requirements on developers they may just decide to not support you at all. But its never a bad thing to have stuff be available as options.

Plus as we see on the PS360, when developers are FORCED to do achievements when they don't want to, they will do it in the most half assed and unenjoyable way possible.

TalkBack / Re: Retro Studios Not Working on Wii U Zelda Title
« on: June 13, 2012, 11:17:41 AM »
Btw, Miyamoto comments on Retro needing to coordinate with the "Zelda team" seem...odd, given Miyamoto's openly stated faith in Retro's abilities in the past.  Besides, given the problems with the Zelda titles since probably Wind Waker, I find it disappointing that Nintendo would insist on even a developer as highly renowned as Retro be tethered to a Japanese Zelda team.  At this point, hasn't Retro earned that trust?

Miyamoto also just recently said there wouldn't be a 3DS revision, but I don't believe that. Maybe he's not telling the truth here either? Maybe he wants it to be a surprise for us, so when he was asked directly the only option he had available was to flat out deny it which might have been a lie, but anything else would have been a confirmation. Even if he kept silent or evaded the question people would interpret that as a confirmation.

That said, he very well could be telling the true here, but I'm just pointing out that his denial isn't necessarily the final answer.

“We haven’t said anything about the hard drive that we’ll be including with the system itself.

This reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where Krusty the Klown gets busted for Tax Evasion because the guy says "I'm not at liberty to divulge information about that customers secret illegal account". And then after he said it he's like "oh crap!"

Anyway, that's pretty much what I wanted to hear. I hope that's a hidden confirmation instead of it just being a mistranslation. It could be either way, but I'll be hoping its the former. :)

That's what emulators are for. Sorry if that's against the rules, but unless you're Unclebob, you're not going to be playing those obscure games.

They aren't obscure to those of us who grew up playing them in our childhood.

Hey Nintendo, stop giving me reasons not to buy the Wii U.

Its not so much that they're giving you reasons NOT to buy the Wii U, but more that they aren't giving you any reasons TO buy it (if that makes sense).

You can guarantee that?

Many 3rd parties didn't like Nintendo's bullying and left for that reason, but Squaresoft wasn't one of those. Nintendo and Square got along well... remember the Super Mario RPG they teamed up to make together? Both companies had a good relationship. So the reason Square packed their bags and left was only because they wanted to do with CDs so they could pack FMV into their games. FMV wasn't an option on the cartridge based N64.

They're always working on the next thing.

I understand that, but why is he TALKING about that now? The 3DS is only a year old! Did we hear about the DS' successor back in 2006? Hell no. Do you know when we first started hearing about the 3DS? I know it had to have been sometime after the DSi came out, and the DSi came out in 2009 so probably 2010 or so? That's not bad because the DS launched in November 2004 so us only hearing about its successor in 2010 meant it had a good long healthy lifspan.

But for someone as high profile as Miyamoto to be talking about the successor to a system that launched in 2011 just a year later in 2012? That doesn't look good. There was no talk about the 3DS in 2006, and rightly so because that would have been WAY too early. Just like right now should be WAY too early to be talking about the 4DS (or whatever they call it).

Its still way too early to be talking about the 3DS' successor. Didn't the 3DS just come out?

I hope Nintendo isn't seriously considering pulling a Sega and launching a new successor system before this one has went through its full life cycle. This talk by Miyamoto of them already focusing on a successor is pretty alarming, especially because the 3DS is only a little over a year old. You think the early $80 price drop pissed off early adopters? Imagine the backlash Nintendo would suffer by pulling the plug on the 3DS in the near future. I don't think there is any sort of Ambassador program they could come up with that could curb the amount of outrage that would cause.

I think Miyamoto is either wrong or he's lying and that there will be a 3DS revision at some point. If he's right this would be the very first time Nintendo has ever had a handheld with no revision whatsoever (unless you count the Virtual Boy, but that was just because the system failed).

I think he knows a revision is in the works but he's denying it because he knows that if people know a revision is on the way the sales of the current 3DS will suffer because people would just hold off on buying it. Nintendo will not announce a revision until almost immediately before it is released.

Miyamoto was quick to respond that the gyroscopic movement controls make up for the lack of a second stick

I think this in a nut shell sums up why the 3DS did not get MW3 last year, nor has Black Ops 2 been announced for it this year. Does he seriously expect someone to be able to aim their sniper rifle by tilting the 3DS around?

Nintendo said back at E3 2011 that the point of the system was to appeal to both Casual and Core gamers. The Wii was for casuals only, but the "U" is supposed to refer to the core gamers who felt left out. But you can't win back core gamers if you ignore the FPS genre which is the most popular genre in the western markets. In Japan it isn't popular and over there it wouldn't sell, but in North America and Europe its a big deal and you absolutely have to have it.

Gears of War isn't a FPS.

Okay, you're right. I didn't know that because I don't have an Xbox and so I've never played it. Its a third person shooter.... but on that note, Nintendo doesn't really have any third person shooters either.

I'm not arguing that those aren't GAMES. But they aren't "core" games, and I thought that's what we arguing about? If its not then I was mistaken about this whole conversation.

If you happen to love games like Chicken Shoot, Elf Bowling, Carnival Games, etc. then I'm sure you have no problem with the Wii's software library. Good for you. What about those who like more traditional games, though? Don't their opinions matter? Nintendo claims they are trying to target "everyone" with their software, but not "Everyone" is happy with these products. One size does not always fit all.

I hope its something completely new. I'm crossing my fingers its a new franchise in the FPS genre, which I feel Retro could do a fantastic job of making and this is the one genre which Nintendo needs to have some exclusive franchise in. The FPS genre is the most popular genre in the western markets, so to continue ignoring it would be a mistake. Sony has Killzone and Resistance, Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War... but so far Nintendo has nothing to counter that. Retro COULD solve that problem.
