What a question! I must choose my answer carefully and it will be..... Yes! However, it might have to be at a bit later time. I'll let you know tomorrow afternoon if the regular 6 PM time is good or if I might have to be a bit later than that.

Same time tonight. 6 PM.

In the past few weeks, I rewatched Gundam SEED via the recently-released BluRays with the new English dub (which is far superior to the shitty Ocean dub).

Hmmm. Never really think of anime much. I've thought about trying another Gundam series but have never put serious effort into doing so. Are you familiar with Gundam Wing? If so, how would you say Seed compares to Wing?

That reminds me. I've seen Robotech and Neon Genesis Evangelion on streaming services and I've always heard of those as major (or classic) anime series. Maybe I should try giving those a spin.

For Adrock,

Are you enjoying Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? It's been on a mental list of mine to check out but then I forget about it since I'm not subscribing to Amazon prime.

Man, can't believe Better Call Saul is already on to the final season and will likely wrap up some point next year. It's the show that I still have the most excited to watch of current shows. After its wrapped up, I don't what will replace that. Maybe Barry but I'm not sure that show will have that long a lifespan based on how it is unfolding.

The Queen's Gambit. That's been one of the few new shows I've been aware of this year that's also had good critical buzz. Worth watching?

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I watched the first two seasons but never went back to it. A couple episodes might have some laugh out loud stuff but I'd classify most of it as "sensible chuckle", just way too stupid to be funny or a shrug. I thought about going back to it as Season 3 and 4 came out and I see reviews posted for it but I had no compulsion to get back to it. I'd frankly forgotten it even existed until seeing your comment despite having watched those first two seasons.

As of right now, there is nothing I am aware of that would conflict with such a meet-up. So I will schedule it in. Was there a title you wished to tackle?
I am assuming that all of the 2 player SNES Switch games can be played online correct?  If so how about Kirby Super Star, Wild Guns or DKC2?

I thought I replied to this but I don't see anything in this thread. To my knowledge, every game with a 2 player option can be played together online. I'm willing to play any of the games you mentioned. I have no clue what Wild Guns would be like though. Would you be looking for co-operative play or versus play in DKC2? KSS is not a high priority for me since I know it very well but I'll still join in some co-op play if it is something you were hoping to get into.

Just curious what TV shows / series users on the forum are watching these days. No big write-up required. Just wondering what's hot.

I'll go first.

Wheel of Fortune
Jeopardy
The Daily Show
Conan
Weakest Link
The Amazing Race
The Goldbergs
The Simpsons (Started watching it again last year in Season 30 and have continued into Season 31 this year after dropping out way back around season 16 maybe)
Various Jamie Oliver cooking shows.

Recently wrapped up:

Tosh.0 may have aired its last new episode a couple weeks ago unless it gets picked up on another channel.
Homeland - 2 episodes left in the last / final season so that will be wrapped up right away as well.

Probably go through Fargo Season 4 next but looking for some viewing inspiration I guess which is why I wanted to launch this thread.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Sales Thread

PS5 is poised to surpass both this year's and last year's 3DS sales combined! Game over, man, game over. Nintendo has lost Japan.

1231
Hold up where did Shocktober go.

It was replaced by No Game November.

For myself, I've bought nothing on the Wii U eShop except Pushmo World. (I've also got 2 VC games.) I actually thought I hadn't bought anything at all and told Mr. Bungle that but recently remembered Pushmo World. There've been titles that interested me but never got around to it because I just never played my Wii U much and have been more 3DS focused through most of the 2010s. I've got Mighty Switch Force 1 & 2 on the 3DS and still give those games a thumbs up so I'm sure the Wii U HD ports are great. When deciding what to get, I felt the 3D gimmick (while slight) was the preferred way I wanted to play it and would be the only way for it while HD can be done elsewhere and has been with a Switch port now. I also acquired Toki Tori 2+ on Switch around April this year because it was on sale dirt cheap and just used some of my Nintendo Gold Coins to get it.

As for the rest, Little Inferno I've always remembered about because it was the next game from the studio that made of World of Goo. While curious about the game, my impression of it from back when it came on Wii U was that it was just a small gimmick of throwing different items in a fire and watching them burn. I equated it to something like a WarioWare unlockable bonus like a toy piano where you can plunk away at a few keys. Make up a song or try and play one you know. It just seemed like something that would offer slight amusement for a little while. I'm still not sure how it could be a game or what sort of progression there could be in it.

Runner 2 is the game I'm definitely putting on a wishlist and really considering purchasing. However, it is a Nintendo backed game so part of me feels I should bet on it coming to Switch especially since the Bit Trip collection is now coming that way. But I'd have thought they would have ported the game by now especially to drum up more support for Runner 3 on Switch so do I gamble on waiting that for that to possibly happen?

No real interest in the other titles although I do question the Wii U Panarama View stuff. How is this different / better than Google Maps streetview? Seems to be the same idea.

1233
Finally, are these titles available elsewhere on Nintendo systems?

Yes

Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition (3DS and Switch)
Trine 2: Director's Cut (Switch)
Little Inferno (Switch)
Toki Tori 2+ (Switch)

No

Nano Assault Neo
Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2
BIT.TRIP Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
Wii U Panorama View

Maybe

Zen Pinball 2
-Zen Studios is releasing Pinball games on Switch. There also seems to be a lot of piecemeal offerings like individual or sets of tables one can get as possible DLC. I'd have to do more digging to see if the tables in Pinball 2 are available that way or in different packages now on Switch but not sure I really want to get into that investigation.

Obviously, the games still listed for Wii U eShop only may be a higher priority for those interested in them as we come up to nearly 4 years of Switch on the market and still no port of those titles. Will they go down with the Wii U ship and join other delisted games not available elsewhere?

1234
I really enjoyed Khushrenada's series of polls about the 3DS eShop and was given his blessing to run a similar series for the Wii U.

Allow me to further impart my blessing by doing a bit of legwork for you. Here are the links and scores from NWR on these titles:

Nano Assault Neo gets an 8.5
Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition gets a 9
Trine 2: Director's Cut gets a 9
Little Inferno gets a 9
Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 gets a 5
BIT.TRIP Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien scores a perfect 10!
Zen Pinball 2 is unrated.
Toki Tori 2+ gets a 9
Wii U Panorama View is unrated.

Overall, a pretty strong opening salvo on the eShop based on the review scores. I’ll admit I slept on Runner 2. Maybe because I never got into any of the Bit.Trip series on Wii and then didn’t get a Wii U until Sept. 2013 so I never thought to check on the title. Wasn’t until the release of Runner 3 on Switch that I heard people talking up how great this second entry was. I actually thought it was tied to WiiWare and didn’t realize it was on the Wii U eShop which is how out of the loop I’ve been on this game.

While scrolling through the NWR reviews, I saw two other Wii U eShop games that were reviewed called Puddle and The Cave. I don’t see those titles listed in the Part 2 section. Have they been delisted? Just missed? What’s the story there?

1235
P.S.: Chasing Aurora is not in the poll but was also a digital-only launch game. Never played it though.

Good catch! I believe it has been delisted at this point on the US eShop. I do want to spotlight some of the other delisted games as well so maybe we will do a poll just for those at the end.

Something like: Which delisted games should be saved from the dustbin of eShop history?

1236
Looks like my job is done here.

Aargh! Thought I covered my bases with no regular Birdo avatars but forgot regular Daisy avatars!

I'll start this myself. She was hot, hot, hot in 2018 but cold, cold, cold in 2020. Unlike the internet these days, her head is still horny for her. It's Boooooowwwwsette!

General Chat / December is Mario 35th Anniversary Celebration Avatar Month!
« on: December 02, 2020, 12:50:54 AM »
Been meaning to do this a couple times and then we'd get into the month and I'd remember about it too late. Good thing pokepal started is Indie Month of December  ;D game thread to remind me it is the first of a month again. While Nintendo has been doing a lot of Mario stuff already, it just seems right that a Nintendo forum should also be joining in celebrating the man in red.  8) So, here's a chance to put on whatever Mario related avatar you choose, ugly or not, and give everyone's favorite go-karting hero a small salute. (Regular Birdo avatars do not count!  >:( )

1239
I'm playing Madden 2019, Final Fantasy 7 and Pokemon Sword.

1240
How soon until Xenogears hits the Switch now? FF7, FF8, FF9, Saga Frontier... it just seems to be leading up to that moment.

1241
As of right now, there is nothing I am aware of that would conflict with such a meet-up. So I will schedule it in. Was there a title you wished to tackle?

1242
Well I guess this is something to do during the holidays.

That's the tepid enthusiasm we're looking for! Just mention when you think you'd be available to get scheduled in.

I'll also mention that one doesn't even need to check out any of these films. If you just want to give your thoughts on any Connery film you've seen then jump on in and do so. Maybe you want to continue some of the discussion MASB and I started about The Anderson Tapes or maybe you want to give your thoughts on some of his later work in The Rock or Entrapment. The field is wide open but for the next month let's just make this the focal point for any Connery Film discussion and see how that goes.

If you are in the US, TCM is playing the following Connery movies at 8:00 PM EST:

Thunderball
You Only Live Twice
Marnie
The Hill
The Man Who Would Be King

If in Canada, the films shown will be:

A Fine Madness
The Wind and The Lion
Marnie
The Hill
The Man Who Would Be King

I've got The Hill set to record as that is the film I most want to see as mentioned in that earlier Discord discussion. If you've never seen The Man Who Would Be King then maybe this is your chance to rectify that. Marnie is considered the last classic Hitchcock film in the style of his work from the 40s and 50s and it did leave a highly positive impression from the one time I saw it some years ago. Those are probably the best of the bunch listed here. Having not seen The Wind and The Lion or A Fine Madness, I cannot comment on whether they are worth seeing. As for the Bond films, You Only Live Twice is one of the worst Bond movies for many reasons I won't elaborate on now. However, it is still a Bond movie so some enjoyment can be had from it if you like the series. It's probably the movie that the Austin Powers series owes a large part of its inspiration and existance. Thunderball is closer to the great side of Bond films but falls a bit short. The producers were doing their best to outdo Goldfinger but the end result isn't quite there. The film is sort of loose and breezy like its Bahamas setting and that slower pace can leave viewers feeling it is a bit boring or overdone but I've never minded that.

What did you think of The Anderson Tapes? I think Sean Connery did his best acting in the 4 or 5 movies he did with Lumet.

Khushrenada 07/16/2020

I'm mixed about it. I enjoy a heist film but The Anderson Tapes doesn't really satisfy that pleasure. It's more focused on making the point about the growth of surveillance and how a heist or crime like this almost can't be committed anymore because there's too many devices around to record what's going on in the world. So, watching the heist unfold sort of feels pointless. The first time through, you wonder if there is some twist coming that you aren't seeing but the twist comes more from the irony of what happens to all the evidence collected in regards to the crime.

And some of the technology used now looks so old-fashioned / obsolete. Yet, the point still stands. Nowadays, so many people have trained themselves to just click away at events and encounters with their phones in images and videos. The end result is that it has led to more people being arrested or charged because of this. I think back to the Vancouver Stanley Cup Riots. Police used camera footage from buildings and what was posted on social media to find some many of the people responsible for property damage and charge them. 10 years ago, it would have been way harder and way more people would have gotten away with what they did.

MASB

I liked Connery's interactions with the psychologist at the beginning of the film. Feels like something you'd go through in that situation.

I think Lumet was ahead of his time in many ways on some of his films. The Anderson Tapes, Network, Dog Day Afternoon...

I would recommend watching The Offence, a movie made by Lumet and Connery just after The Anderson Tapes. Very different movie. Kind of a downer, so don't watch when you want a happy movie.

Khushrenada

My other knock on the film was that I saw it maybe 10 years ago and last year I saw it playing on TCM. I couldn't remember anything about it so I started watching it again. Watching it, I knew I'd seen it and refreshed my memory about it. But I can't recall the psychologist scene you mention since I came in late to the picture. To its credit, you get hooked into and it is compelling but I do think it is something one can easily forget about after. I don't think it has much staying power. Compared to something like Dog Day Afternoon for a failed heist, it just doesn't seem to have anything in the story or the direction to make it rise up into something special or impactful.

When looking up Lumet films, I found this article made in 2011 about his movies: https://www.indiewire.com/2012/04/the-films-of-sidney-lumet-a-retrospective-252714/

I've been going through it and now there a whole bunch of other movies I want to see.

On the subject of Connery and Lumet, The Hill is the movie that has got me most interested in checking out so far.

And Deathtrap with Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine. That seems like something I need to check out also.

MASB

The Hill may be Connery's best performance ever. Death Trap is a fun thriller of sorts.

Khushrenada

You seem to be more up Lumet films than me. What all have you seen of his works. (Yeah, from the blurb about the film on that indiewire article, it seemed like it could be a great Connery role/performance which is why it rocketed to the top of other works I need to check out from Lumet.)

MASB

I've also seen Family Business, the last Connery-Lumet pairing. He plays Dustin Hoffman's ex-con father. It's basically a family drama with some fun bits, dealing with how much of the family history they should embrace and what they should do to be themselves as well. Not as good as the other Connery movies, but good.
Like I said, I've seen The Offence where Connery plays a cop that has been affected by all he has seen on the job and where he lets that lead him. And I've seen one of Lumet's last movies, Strip Search. The issues it deals with is very much of its time and yet always applicable.

Khushrenada

Going through the films Connery has starred in, I'd say my favorite non-Bond role would be the one he has in The Man Who Would Be King.

MASB

That's a great one. Robin and Marian is another good movie. Plus there's Zardoz, the ultimate 70's Connery movie.

Robin and Marian also shows yet again, what a great actor Robert Shaw was. Even watching him shave is interesting. :p

Khushrenada

I gotta see Zardoz at some point. I remember seeing clips of it around 2000/2001 and it just looked so ridiculous and bizarre but have yet to ever seriously think about doing so.

MASB

It has the NWR_James seal of approval!

Khushrenada

Sorry but the James seal of approval doesn't carry much weight with me. Compared to his approval, the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality looks like the Michelin Star equivalent of gaming.

MASB had been bugging for me awhile about possibly doing some kind of forum chat about Connery movies. We had a discussion about them on Discord a few months back. With Connery's death, he's brought it up a couple times since. As it turns out, TCM is doing a bit of a tribute to Connery tonight and airing a few of his films. It got me thinking of this old thread. I'm going to see if I can make use of it and turn it into a discussion of Connery's stuff.

First, here's a bit of the conversation MASB and I had. I edited it a bit since it had begun on talking about Sydney Lumet films and turned into a Connery discussion.

1248
Sounds good. I'll make it so. Same meet up time?

Successfully met up with Mr. Bungle Friday. We did some Mario Super Picross and bungled along it as we distracted each other while talking about all manner of stuff. Then we fumbled our way through Pop'N Twinbee trying to make sense of it. However, by the end and some internet research, I think we both now have a good understanding of the game so looking forward to our next gaming session when we can tackle it with this increased understanding. Let me know when you are ready for another meet-up, Mr. Bungle.

How about the rest of youse? I still want to get some DKC action happening here. C'mon already!
