TalkBack / Starsky & Hutch gets composer
« on: October 02, 2002, 07:16:30 AM »
Tim Follin gets the nod.

Empire composes itself for future releases

With a host of top grade titles heading for Christmas and the New Year, Empire have acquired the services of leading game music composers Richard Jacques and Tim Follin, to ensure that up and coming products sound as good as they look and play. Richard and Tim are experienced industry musicians and come with an impressive CV of classics under their belt.

Tim Follin will be recreating the cult feel, sound and cool factor of 70's TV classic Starsky & Hutch™ - for Empire's upcoming game release of the same name. Tim's sounds can be heard as far back as the late 80s in The Sentinel, Bionic Commando, Ghosts 'n' Goblins and more recently Equinox and Ecco the Dolphin.

Tim added "This is the project I had hoped I would get one day. I've always loved Starsky & Hutch and it's original title music. I've tried to make the game music as cool and funky as possible, given the nature of the gameplay and overall franchise. I've made a lot of musicians jealous bagging this one!"

Previously Richard Jacques has written music for Jet Set Radio Future, Headhunter, Sonic R, Metropolis Street Racer and some of the Bacardi Breezer TV ads among other leading youth culture properties. His work has also been featured at the Barbican Gallery's "Game On" Exhibition. This time round he's hoping to add a certain je-ne sais-quoi to embody the new cutting edge Emotion AI that promises to make Total Immersion Racing™ stand out from the rest of the racing pack.

Richard added "I have worked on many racing titles previously, but the first thing to stand out on Total Immersion Racing was the attention to detail of the AI. This should give serious driving game fanatics a new level of depth to explore. Also it was great to have the opportunity to write some break-beat tracks for the game. It was excellent to work with Empire on this title."

"With its vivid graphics and fast-paced action, Iridion 3D was one of our most acclaimed titles for the Game Boy Advance," said Ken Gold, Vice President of Marketing for Majesco.  "With Iridion II, we maintained the high level of graphic integrity and added in new game-play features and storyline, both of which should broaden the Iridion fan base even further.".

Exciting key features of Iridion II include:

§         Advanced background animation combined with 3D simulation provides great depth of game play and spectacular graphics;

§         16 levels featuring various new enemies throughout each level and an arsenal of new weapons from which to choose;

Boom!! EA SPORTS Madden NFL and NCAA Football Games Sack the Competition

Retail Data Shows Momentum for NBA Live, NASCAR Thunder and NHL Games from EA SPORTS REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--Sept. 25, 2002--Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS), the world's leading developer and publisher of video games, has extended its lead in the industry's biggest sports category -- football. Independent research on retail sales ranks EA's Madden NFL(TM) 2003 and NCAA(R) Football 2003 first and second respectively, ahead of the NFL game of the closest competitor. Volume on EA's football games is up 142 percent over the prior year with no significant market share lost to competition.

"Gamers and retailers have voted," said EA's Vice President of Marketing Frank Gibeau, "EA SPORTS(TM) Madden NFL 2003 and NCAA 2003 football games are in a league all their own. The lopsided victory in football shows a great trend line for the upcoming launch of basketball, racing and hockey games from EA SPORTS."

Information collected from sources including NPDFunworld TRSTS Video Games Service for July/August includes the data for the launch of all industry football games in 2002. Key points include:

Overall, EA SPORTS captured 84.9 percent of the total football market. The closest competitor got 8.4 percent.

Among just the NFL games, EA's Madden had 82.7 percent market share; the closest competitor had 10.3 percent of the market for NFL games.

Madden NFL 2003 and NCAA Football 2003 lead their respective categories on every major platform including the PlayStation(R) 2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo GameCube(TM), Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft and the PC.

Among college football games, EA's NCAA Football 2003 captured 96.2 percent of the console market -- a 5.8 percent share increase over last year. The closest competitor got 3.2 percent of the NCAA market -- 6.4 percent less than the year prior.

In 2001, football constituted 23.3 percent of the market for sports games and sports represented 22 percent of all game sales in North America.

Video game sales track much like motion picture box office -- the first month's sales usually determine success and failure. A game that launches poorly almost never improves in the months that follow.

The next blockbuster from EA SPORTS, NBA Live 2003 with revolutionary freestyle control, is scheduled to ship on October 15.

TalkBack / Planet GameCube makes USA Today!

Round #2 with Steven Kent on the Rare issue....and look who gets quoted?!

Steven Kent takes another stab at the Rare/MS buyout in his USA Today article, and Planet GameCube gets a mention.  Take a look....

"Rare figured out ways to get the best (performance) out of each machine," says Nintendo senior vice president George Harrison. Nonetheless, when the decision had to be made, "it came out of the perception of price vs. value. ... (Nintendo officials) believed that they could take that money and do development deals elsewhere."

Others may agree. Planet GameCube, one of the largest and most respected Nintendo fan sites on the Net, posted a survey asking visitors how they felt about Rare leaving Nintendo's fold; nearly half of 10,000 respondents said it didn't matter.

"For me, as a gamer, it does not affect me that much," says Billy Berghammer, who runs the site. "I liked some of their N64 titles, but not all of them."

Make sure you stop by your local newsstand to pick yourself up a copy.  According to Billy's Parents our sources, this makes fantastic refridgerator art!

Special thanks to Steven Kent for the mention.

« on: September 24, 2002, 10:28:02 PM »
Rare may be gone from GameCube, but GBA isn't even close to dead.  Steven Kent fans want to read this...

Steven Kent interviewed Joel Hochberg, Rare co-founder this week, and as we reported before, Rare isn't as gone as people may have thought.

Even though Rare will not be developing any more GameCube titles, Rare will continue to develop Game Boy Advance titles.  Here's the goods...

Interestingly, though Rare is now owned by Microsoft, it will still have some dealings with Nintendo. “We still plan to work on games for Game Boy Advance in the future,” said Hochberg. Rare has developed Game Boy titles in the past, and Microsoft does not currently manufacture a rival handheld system.

Microsoft Acquires Video Game Powerhouse Rare Ltd.

Developers of Such Worldwide Hits as "Donkey Kong 64," "Banjo-Kazooie," "GoldenEye 007" And "Perfect Dark" Bring Their Talents to Xbox

REDMOND, Wash. — Sept. 24, 2002 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it has purchased U.K.-based Rare Ltd., one of the world's leading video game developers, further demonstrating Microsoft's commitment to providing the most innovative interactive experiences available on its Xbox™ video game system. Rare has been the mastermind behind some of the most popular video games in history, including such global multimillion sellers as "GoldenEye 007," "Perfect Dark," "Banjo-Kazooie" and "Donkey Kong 64." Under terms of the $375 million cash transaction, Rare will today begin creating exclusive console gaming blockbusters for Xbox.

In a statement made from Seville, Spain, where the announcement was made to both a live and worldwide webcast audience during the company's annual X02 event, Chris Stamper, chairman and technical director of Rare, said, "Our mission at Rare has always been to make the industry's best games for the widest possible audience. Teaming with Microsoft gives us the best opportunity to accomplish this goal. Microsoft's dedication and commitment to game creators, research and development, and to gaming innovation made them the obvious partner to take Rare into the future."

"We've always insisted on pushing the envelope when it comes to creativity," added Tim Stamper, co-founder and creative director of Rare. "And now we get the chance to create for Xbox."

Rare co-founders Chris and Tim Stamper and their talented team of game developers and designers will continue to work out of Rare in Warwickshire, England. Rare was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the Stamper brothers and Joel Hochberg, now Rare president.

"This partnership significantly broadens our already outstanding portfolio of games that will be available for Xbox. And it also broadens our reach internationally as gamers around the world have demonstrated their fanaticism for what Rare consistently produces," said Robbie Bach, Chief Xbox Officer at Microsoft.

"The last time I was this excited was the first time I picked up a controller and played a game from Rare," said Ed Fries, vice president of Xbox Game Content at Microsoft. "As a gamer, you could hardly wait until Rare's next title was announced. You didn't know what genre it would be, but it didn't matter because you knew you were going to love it."

Rare grabbed the attention of the video game world in 1994 with its creation of "Donkey Kong Country." Selling more than 8 million copies, "DKC" went on to become the biggest- selling 16-bit title in history. Rare became one of the premiere developers in the world, with sales averaging 1.4 million units per title and nearly 90 million games sold since the company was founded. Five of the top 20 all-time-best-selling N64 titles were developed by Rare, including "GoldenEye 007," the second-best-selling game in North America, with worldwide sales topping 8 million.

With today's announcement, Rare becomes the latest member of a star-studded lineup at Microsoft Game Studios, joining such prestigious worldwide developers as Bungie Studios, the masterminds behind the smash hit "Halo™," named Game of the Year by Electronic Gaming Monthly. Rare's first creation for Xbox, "Kameo," is expected to reach store shelves next spring. Also under development is the highly anticipated sequel to "Perfect Dark." The company is expecting to develop at least five games over the next two years in a variety of genres, including racing, shooters and platformers.

INFOGRAMES SHIPS BIG AIR FREESTYLE FOR NINTENDO GAMECUBE

Massive Air, Outrageous Tricks, Spectacular Graphics Headline Ultimate Motocross Game -- Playable Demo of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Included on Disk --

LOS ANGELES – September 24, 2002 – Infogrames, Inc., (NASDAQ: IFGM) a leading global publisher of interactive entertainment software, has shipped Big Air Freestyle™, an extreme motocross game for the Nintendo GameCube(TM), to store shelves this week.

Developed by Infogrames’ own Paradigm Entertainment, Big Air Freestyle promises players the most exhilarating motocross experience on Nintendo GameCube with the biggest air and the sickest freestyle tricks.  The game features more than a dozen riders in all three classes (125cc, 250cc and 500 cc), racing across more than 20 gritty real-world and fantasy tracks.

“Big Air Freestyle raises the bar for motocross video games by pushing the boundaries of graphics and playability,” said Jean-Philippe Agati, senior vice president and head of Infogrames, Inc.’s Los Angeles studio.  “This game puts you deep in the mud in all three motorbike sports – Motocross, Supercross and Freestyle.  With a massive number of tracks and riders, coupled with incredible physics for superior handling and great control, Big Air Freestyle is so extreme, gamers will be cleaning the dirt off their TVs.”

Big Air Freestyle offers deep gameplay in three unique gameplay modes, encompassing the entire two-wheel offroad experience -- Freestyle, Motocross and Supercross.  Players choose to race on large outdoor tracks or specially designed indoor arenas in Motocross and Supercross racing modes.  Freestyle mode invites gamers to careen through the air pulling off death-defying stunts – including the traditional “Can Can” and the impossible “Cliffhanger” -- in indoor fantasy arenas loaded with high ramps and exploding obstacles.  The in-your-face action takes place on more than 20 motocross and supercross tracks and six fantasy freestyle arenas.

Big Air Freestyle provides the most realistic racing experience with a vast selection of extreme bike models for each engine class (125cc, 250cc and 500cc), disturbingly dirty mud projections, straight-to-the-action controls, interactive Artificial Intelligence, fully animated riders, front and rear brakes and photo-realistic track features.

Each of Big Air Freestyle’s tracks are living, breathing environments with waving flags and animated track officials, spectators, cheerleaders and cameramen.  The game features a thumping soundtrack that includes music from chart topping acts such as 311 and Sugarcult.

As an extra feature, a playable demo of the highly anticipated monster fighting game, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, is also included on the disk.  In the demo, players can take control of one of the legendary Toho creatures and battle other gargantuan foes across fully 3D and interactive arenas of city-wide scale.  Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee will ship to retail stores in October for Nintendo GameCube™.

Big Air Freestyle shipped to most retail stores this week with an estimated retail price of $49.99 and an ESRB rating of T for Teen.

Nintendo Launches Star Fox Adventures: An Epic Tale of Dinosaur Rescue

Legendary Pilot Emerges from the Cockpit to Save A Planet

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 2002--Eight years after cementing his status as one of the most acclaimed pilots in video game history, Fox McCloud returns in full force, extending his heroics from air to land to water to preserve the lush habitat and protect the residents of Dinosaur Planet.

A joint effort by Nintendo and Rare(R) Ltd., the sprawling epic, Star Fox(R) Adventures, arrives exclusively for NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM), Sept. 23, for an MSRP of $49.95.

"When Star Fox first launched for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the mid `90s, it marked an exciting but very early attempt to move objects through a 3-D environment," explains Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "This new Star Fox Adventures for NINTENDO GAMECUBE is a stunning reminder of how far our industry has come, how gorgeous visuals and world class storytelling can deliver weeks and even months of engrossing, interactive entertainment."

Previously, Fox McCloud was content to battle enemies from his Arwing fighter. But now, he must explore the vast terrain of the planet on foot to defeat the devious General Scales and mutated dinosaurs he's enlisted to his cause. While Fox was previously visible only dimly beneath his cockpit window, players now will watch a wide array of facial expressions from Fox as he wields weapons and magic to soar above and charge through the vividly rendered forests, jungles, icescapes and hidden structures of Dinosaur Planet. With his former wing mates now retired to ground support roles, Fox teams up with a native triceratops named Prince Tricky and encounters a mysterious young woman named Krystal.

According to our inside sources within Nintendo of America, Nintendo has given the green light to companies to distribute demo discs.

The first demo disc that will be released will be Resident Evil 0.  It’s unknown if this will be the same demo released in Japan, and it’s also unclear how these discs will be released.  These demo discs could be distributed free in stores, part of a pre-order deal, or even available inside game magazines.  This is yet to be determined.

It is also unknown at this time if Nintendo themselves will be releasing their own demo discs.  We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Stay tuned to Planet GameCube to find out how to get your hands on the first-ever GameCube demo discs.

TalkBack / Rare keeps certain licenses
« on: September 20, 2002, 01:19:31 PM »
Kiss Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, and Miss Dark good-bye.  You will no longer see new games with these characters on Nintendo systems.

We posted the press release about Nintendo "dropping" Rare a little earlier today, but we've learned some additional news from our inside sources that the press release seemingly left out.

Rare will retain the rights to Banjo Kazooie, Conker, and Perfect Dark.  You will no longer see new games with these licenses on Nintendo systems.  Rare owns these licenses.

So what happens to the GBA games?  Our sources say that the games like Diddy Kong Pilot, and Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers will be released by Nintendo.  Banjo Kazooie and Sabrewulf will not be joining the released titles.

We should have more news on this in the next couple of days.

Can someone make some "vroom vroooooom" noises?  Thank you.

NASCAR THUNDER 2003 SHIPS ON FOUR PLATFORMS

Best-Selling EA SPORTS NASCAR Game Offers Most Complete NASCAR Experience with New Modes such as Lightning Challenge and Deepest Career Mode in NASCAR Gaming

Redwood City, Calif., September 19, 2002 - Get behind the wheel of Dale Earnhardt Jr's number 8 car or select from any of the 69 NASCAR® drivers, with more than 175 different NASCAR vehicles in Electronic Arts' (Nasdaq: ERTS) NASCAR Thunder(tm) 2003.  The console versions shipped this week for the Playstation®2 computer entertainment system, the PlayStation® console, Xbox(tm) video game system from Microsoft and the Nintendo GameCube(tm).  Now the most extensive NASCAR experience, with a full pack of 43 cars racing door-to-door, also features the deepest and most compelling modes with the addition of the Lightning Challenge, Thunder License and an expanded Career Mode.

"I'm gonna wear this game out," commented Dale Earnhardt Jr. "The new additions are really fun. I take this stuff pretty seriously, so I'm happy to see that EA SPORTS has done great things with this year's NASCAR Thunder game."

The NASCAR Thunder franchise is renowned for its Career Mode but this year's is the deepest yet.  Gamers are challenged to create a car, sign sponsors, manage the pit crew and invest in research and development as they try to beat the record seven championships held by Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt.  Management can be very detailed, users can choose to recruit each member of the pit crew separately or have the computer quickly select a pit crew for them. In addition to managing the team through out their career, players can attract bigger and better sponsors and earn money to invest in the team, car and pit crew on their way to NASCAR super-stardom.

The game's new Lightning Challenge mode throws gamers into one of 31 different scenarios. Each challenge features one or more of 35 different NASCAR stars, out of the car and in front of the cameras, walking fans through the scenario and challenging them to recreate or improve on history.  Challenges range from trying to navigate the car through the "big one," a crash involving multiple vehicles, without getting caught up in the wreck, to repeating Dale Earnhardt Jr's win at last year's EA SPORTS(tm) 500.  With one lap to go, the number 8 car is in 4th place -- can you take Dale Jr. back to victory lane?  Winning these challenges earn Thunder Plates that unlock features including hidden drivers, tracks, alternate paint schemes and videos in NASCAR Thunder.

Another new feature, Thunder License mode, takes you on a guided tour by Richard Petty, to all 23 NASCAR Cup Series tracks.  Players can ride shotgun with "The King" as he shows the best lines around each of the tracks and entry speeds for the infamously tough and treacherous turns in the NASCAR Cup Series.  Along the way, Petty will also share little details and interesting factoids about the tracks.  Once gamers hit the track, they will benefit from the interactive driving instruction from one of 23 NASCAR Cup Drivers.  Getting your Thunder License is the best way to improve your driving skills and success is rewarded with a host of unique Thunder Plates.

NASCAR Thunder 2003 features fantasy tracks that offer additional challenges for gamers who are looking for more road racing.  NASCAR Thunder 2003 features 6 challenging fantasy road racing courses, racing on the Daytona Beach course and one Superspeedway with speeds in excess of 240mph.

"We're taking the NASCAR franchise to a whole new level with NASCAR Thunder 2003," said Ed Martin, director of NASCAR production, Electronic Arts. "With 2003, we've taken our best selling game and added entirely new ways for fans to experience the racing action with new game modes, more drivers, more tracks and lots more excitement."

Developed by EA - Tiburon, the developers of the Madden NFL(tm) franchise games, NASCAR Thunder 2003 is rated "E" (Everyone) by the ESRB.   Available on the PlayStation 2 console, Nintendo GameCube, the Xbox, the PlayStation console and later this year as a rich simulation experience on the PC.  Consumers may purchase the game directly at the EA StoreSM (http://eastore.ea.com) or by calling EA Direct Sales at 1-877/324-2637, for a suggested retail price of $49.95.

EA SPORTS(tm) 500 at Talladega®  NASCAR Thunder 2003 features the EA SPORTS 500, a stop on the NASCAR Cup Series at Alabama's Talladega Superspeedway®.  Last year EA SPORTS announced a three-year sponsorship deal with Talladega Superspeedway and the International Speedway Corporation naming the legendary NASCAR Cup Series fall race the EA SPORTS 500.  The inaugural event concluded with a dramatic victory by NASCAR Thunder 2003's cover athlete, Dale Earnhardt Jr., on October 21, 2001.  This year's race takes place on October 6, 2002.

TalkBack / Nintendo Cuts Development Ties with Rare
« on: September 20, 2002, 08:46:26 AM »
The official statement from Nintendo that you all may have, or may not have been waiting for.

Nintendo Cuts Development Ties with Rare, Ltd.

Decision Reflects Strategic Move To Expand And Redirect Game Development

LONDON--Sept. 20, 2002--As part of a strategic redirection of its game development investments, Nintendo announces it has sold its 49 percent ownership position in U.K.-based developer Rare, Ltd.

"Nintendo had the ability to continue its exclusive relationship with Rare, but in looking at the company's recent track record, it became clear that its value to the future of Nintendo would be limited," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "In other words, we passed on this opportunity for very good business reasons."

In fiscal year 2001, Rare accounted for only 9.5 percent of total Nintendo software sales worldwide. In fiscal year 2002, that number declined to 1.5 percent.

Nintendo will retain exclusive rights for all original properties and franchises featured in games developed by Rare, including Donkey Kong(R), Diddy Kong(R) and Star Fox(R).

According to MacDougall, game development is, by nature, dynamic. Relationships continually change to meet the needs of both manufacturers and publishers. "The disposition of this investment leaves us in a position to become even more aggressive in expanding our development capacity, both internally and externally. Aside from several partnerships already announced over the past year, we are currently in similar talks with several other prospective partners around the world."

In the past year, Nintendo has added emphasis on games which offer true innovation to video game players, and especially those with appeal to older players. Key current and upcoming NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) titles include Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(TM), Animal Crossing(TM), Metroid(R) Prime, The Legend of Zelda(R) and Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil series exclusively for NINTENDO GAMECUBE.

"Although we declined the opportunity to continue our exclusive agreement with Rare, this announcement does not diminish our respect for their work or the past contributions they have made to Nintendo," adds MacDougall.

As the worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co. Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy(R), Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.6 billion video games worldwide, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching such franchises as Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R).
