Pachter is such a hater. I've never seen one projection of his say anything positive about Nintendo. No wonder he continues to be wrong.

Hater is a strong word for a man whose work is to follow and predict the flow of money. I like him even when he makes some really goofy predictions. Gametrailers' Pach-Attack and Pachter's other appearances shed a little light on a part of video games that is sometimes depressing but often interesting.

There is still the North American stuff Enner if I am not mistaken.

Yup. That's going to arrive in the couple of minutes. I'm disappointed that the NoA site doesn't have as good of a page for Nintendo Direct as NCL does.

Well, that was a bit uneventful. Some cool stuff for Kid Icarus Uprising and eShop.
Oh, and a Fatal Frame 2(?) remake for Wii.

Ho, Wii titles? Other than that Kiki Trick game?

I have doubts that it will be anything that will cross the to the Americas, Oceania, and Europe, but I'm interested if Nintendo has anything new for the Wii's twilight year.

Also, I'm eager to see new and unannounced 3DS titles for late spring and summer. Oh, and maybe the latest on Monster Hunter 4 and Fire Emblem 3DS.

It might bother some players to feel disdain and humiliation from the developer that is supposed to bring them joy/excitement. In regard to Ninja Dog mode, I don't know much about it other than the pink ribbon and Ayane chastising the player. So maybe it isn't too big of a deal.

I don't know what to make of Ninja Gaiden 3 as it relates to Wii U. The Wii U version has the subtitle Razor's Edge and is reported that it will be different. How different remains to be seen. The safe thing to assume is that there won't be drastic or fundamental changes. I only hope Team Ninja doesn't think quick timing events with the touchscreen are a good idea.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 280: Sand in the Ointment
« on: February 20, 2012, 02:12:58 AM »
Great episode.

The discussion on what gameplay is reminds me of a commentary piece written by, to say the least, a rather colorful and passionate person who wrote that the word "gameplay" is the stupidest word in video games. The crux of the commentary being that when you are talking about gameplay, you are just talking about the game. (Eh, that's a poor paraphrase of his points.)

For me, gameplay/a game is simply how it (the product) plays. With music, it is how it sounds. With a drawing, it is how it looks. With a movie, it is how it looks and sounds. With a game (and gameplay), it is how it plays. From there, I think about all the things that make how a game plays (rules, scoring, goals/objectives, mechanics, controls, tools, attributes, statuses, environments, objects, feedback, results, etc.) and conclude that is what gameplay/a game is.

It becomes difficult to separate where the game ends and where graphics, sound, music, and story begin. This is especially so in Just Dance, Rhythm Heaven, and Ghost Trick which mentioned in the podcast. The difficulty may come from the background question of "What makes a game fun?" and how our personal answer might be that the technical game part of video games aren't the reason why we love to play video games.

Ah, I'm getting off track with a different philosophical discussion.

I'll leave off on where I think gameplay ends and other aspects begin by taking the example of Mario's jump sound effect. That there is a sound effect on a successful jump is important feedback to the player, and such feedback is gameplay. However, as far as gameplay is concerned any short and quick sound effect would be adequate in providing feedback. This is where gameplay in this example ends. That the Mario jump sound effect is the reassuring and joyful sound we have come to know, recognize, and love is where sound design and editing begins.

P.S. Going off from the above, I would imagine a pure gameplay representation of Rhythm Heaven would be sets of lights and sequences of tones that serves as cues for the player input. That is a cold and soulless to imagine for a game that is very much the opposite.

"Can other regions expect to trail this Japanese titan's path to success?"

Yes, albeit far behind. That is assuming Capcom does nothing to make the game more accessible and less awkward to play.

This should please the Monster Hunter fans out side of Japan. Seeing as how I have yet to sink my teeth in to Monster Hunter Tri, I doubt I'll be getting this for the 3DS.

The DS version isn't counted because it has a different name. I'm not sure why the Wii version isn't listed though.

Maybe it's just a typo or an oversight and the Wii version is counted along with the X360, PS3 and WinPC versions.

The Triforce!

I'm excited to see what CryTek's CryEngine 3 will look like on the Wii U. Has Nintendo ever had as big a booth at GDC before? If not, then this must mean that Nintendo has something new and exciting to show to video game developers.

Launch fervor is an expected thing, especially now that the U-tab has nearly comparable controls to the competition. What I'm anxious about is third-party wares 2-4 years in the system's life, and that is something that nobody can know or predict at this point.

Still, it's nice to hear such talk even if it might prove cheap.

Resident Evil: Revelations doing nicely. Shame on Soul Calibur 5's slow start; looks like Namco Bandai might need to think hard on how to make the series special again. Armored Core V still sticking around which is nice for From Software; that 48/100 reader review average for the game isn't though.

$2 per track is in line with the pricing for music game DLC on other platforms. I wouldn't expect that to change.

Mm, that makes sense now that I think about how the developer needs to add the note track or whatever game bits there are. Ah, I was thinking too much about buying MP3 tracks.

I hope they will be cheaper if they are available in the Americas, Europe, and elsewhere. Then again, the Square tax may be applied worldwide.

I picked the one with the big party showing their backs. The night sky one with Shulk is pretty, but I like seeing all the characters you will meet on the adventure on the cover art.

A 16 or 32 GB one should be fine, right?

In Batman: Arkham Asylum's case, the DLC for that is mostly challenge rooms. Your mileage may vary on those but I never had must interest in the challenge rooms. DLC for Arkham City so far has been extra characters and costumes. I haven't heard of anything else beyond that.

I don't see why you need to feel sorry for the people you describe. They must really love the game if they are buying so much of it. Or they are impatient.
