Nice to see GameTrailers liking the Xenoblade Chronicles.

and even more surprisingly they managed to put together a video review with minimal spoilers.  Compared to their abysmal recent Tales of Graces F review (an excellent game I feel was judged unfairly and had some pretty nasty spoilers in the review), that's a pretty big step up.

Hmm, I watched the Tales of Graces f review as well. I wonder if this is being a case me being horribly inattentive or very ignorant of Graces f's story but I didn't feel spoiled too much from watching the review. Maybe some of what they spoiled isn't much of a spoiler for someone who has yet to play the game? Hmm, perhaps I'm just trying to forget the review in case I happen to play Graces f some day.

Right now, I hope PSO 2 gets ported from Vita to Wii U.

If Sega gets to run or have access to their own network on the Wii U, then it's a possibility. News today have stated that Phantasy Star Online 2 will be a free-to-play game (with a cash shop) and looking at early summer for the PC release and 2013 for the Vita version. The PC and Vita version will be played on the same server. If Sonic Team is confident that the Vita has enough control inputs to match PSO2, then I hope they consider a Wii U version too! Also, I hope Nintendo lets Sega run the free-to-play game somehow.

You mean something like Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks? Or something with sprites again?

I've never played an MMO, but I'm sure that if you really need to press combinations of buttons at the same time, they can be replaced bu a combination of buttons on the controller and icons on the touch screen.
no need to hit Shift-S for your spell book or whatever and then shift l for your lava spell when you could just touch your spell book and then tap your lava spell.

but at the same time I am also in the multi-touch uMote camp because there are lots of things that multi-touch could come in handy for.

Having played a bunch of World of Warcraft, WoW derivatives, and Korean grinders, there is a silly amount of actions and functions you can perform. Along with the ubiquitous 1-0 hot bar keys, there are all sorts of displays and menus you can access alongside the text chat. However, as with a lot of PC-centric  games, there are a lot of things you can do at any given moment but only a few things that would be meaningful in a given moment. With some smart design, the touchscreen should do just fine with a MMORPG.

I don't trust their reviews, and I don't see why anyone else should, either.

Eh, it's another score to throw in an aggregate. Always good to make that sample size bigger. Then again, I don't get hung up on reviews and review scores with any sort of reaction more than, "Eh, that sounds pretty bad"; "Eh, that sounds kinda good"'; or, "Hmm, that looks interesting." From there, it's one more step to buying the game or passing on it.

Really curious how other reviews shake out. The controls for the third-person shooter segments and holding the 3DS seem to be the most divisive points.

TalkBack / Re: EA Shutting Down Some Online Services
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:45:27 PM »
Hah, yeah. Apparently, EA doesn't care how worse and worse they look as long as they save the trivial amount of cash used to have a master server running. It's even more unnecessary when you consider the bulk of the online play is handled peer-to-peer.

This destroys the one and only reason why the Online Pass thing might ever have been a good idea. If they are still shutting down even the games which have it, then what good is it? I would never buy an online pass. If the game includes it, fine, but I would never spend extra on one, because the plug is still going to be pulled eventually regardless.

Heh. Having the scheme read as "Used Game Penalty" probably wouldn't go over as well. It would be honest though. Oh, another stupid thing is that online support for The Saboteur (a single-player game) will be pulled and some extra content will be unavailable (legitimately, at least). I think the content included nudity for the game's gentleman's club hideout.

2486
Add pictures of folding the 3DS stand in to it's compact form! It looked really neat in the Nintendo Direct presentation.

This combination of all the current official 3DS accessories doesn't look too bad to me. I guess I'm a little weird? Maybe it is all my time spent with a Game Gear and its AC adapter plugged in to a socket that is the reason this doesn't look like a monstrous perversion of a handheld device to me.

TalkBack / Re: Ghost Recon on Wii U Will Have In-Game Purchases
« on: March 19, 2012, 02:56:37 PM »
Having the Wii U game be the same free-to-play structure as the PC version would be nice for parity. I doubt Nintendo would let that fly so I expect there will be a US$10-15 base pack or something. It would be interesting if you could download and play the game for free on the Wii U. Ghost Recon Online would be one of the first, if not the first, free-to-play games to have a home console version.

If the leasing theory was true, wouldn't other third-party games on the Virtual Console have expired long before Sonic's term was up?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_(Japan)
[Master System] Sonic the Hedgehog   Sega   August 5, 2008   A

[Master System] Fantasy Zone   Sega   March 11, 2008   A
[Famicom] Gradius   Konami   December 2, 2006   A

There are third-party titles available since the launch of the service and I doubt they are being purchased more often than Sonic games.

I'm actually surprised at how poorly the Vita is doing.  It makes me wonder if the constant price drops these game companies put out have people waiting.

I got to try out a Vita today and I was impressed with it.  I had a PSP/DS last gen and haven't jumped into the new gen yet, but the Vita is a slick piece of equipment.  I think it's improved over the PSP in numerous areas.  The screen is supernice and the touch screen is great keeping in mind that people will be using their hands instead of a stylus.  The processor seems capable of putting out PS3 style graphics in the palm of your hand.   And the dual analog is a nice addition.

The 3ds I didn't get the same feeling.  I bought an XL and it's painful for me to go back to a screen that small.  I can still notice jaggies which were omni-present on most of the DS games.  And I'm not a fan of the slide pad, I'd rather have a stick.

Your whole post in general sounds like Sony propaganda, especially the second paragraph. Did Sony pay you to say that?

Having got to briefly handle one myself at a Best Buy, I can attest to the quality of the screen and the sticks. The Vita really is an impressive piece of hardware for its US$250 asking price. And this is coming from some one who got a PSP and has no interest in buying a Vita at the moment.

Didn't know the manuals of 3DS games are a fold-out sheet rather than a booklet. Kinda makes me sad.

The little portraits is a nice touch.

If they wanted portable FIFA they should have saved some money and bought the 3DS one, which, as I've pointed out, is fantastic. Right up there with Mario and Resident Evil as one of the best games on the system.

True, but isn't there a history of Nintendo not being as popular as its competitors in Europe? I've heard on hearsay that non-Nintendo systems like the Mega Drive and Playstation are/were more popular. Never did check for hard numbers though.

As for Dragon's Dogma, you sure there's a Vita version? That's the first I've heard of it.

There isn't a Vita version, or at least it hasn't been announced. I think he ment Monster Hunter, but both games look so similar that I can see anyone getting confused by it.

Ah, those two games look different in my eyes. That may come from familiarity. Monster Hunter looks more colorful and goofier. Dragon's Dogma in comparison looks a bit drab and dark.

Odd pulls from the store. I guess contracts, licenses, or some such have expired?

In the US the Vita is doing better and in Europe the Vita is doing great (not sure why since it costs the most there).  It's strange to see the Vita doing badly in Japan but so far no major RPG hit the system (Capcom's Dragon Dorma might change that).

Europe has a history of buying Sony stuff, hasn't it? Also, I'll bet some people wanted more portable FIFA. As for Dragon's Dogma, you sure there's a Vita version? That's the first I've heard of it.
As far as RPGs go, there haven't been big splashes for the Vita. It does have a Monster Hunter type game in Ragnarok Odyssey.

Nintendo having an exclusive and successful shooter series or two would be good. Don't know who would be making it unless Retro would be okay staring down the barrel of a different gun for the good part of another decade. Maybe Nintendo can fuse/collaborate Retro, High Voltage, and n-Space and make some magic!

The rumor that interests me most is Nintendo taking a loss on the Wii U. Given the history of how Nintendo profits off of selling hardware, this is an unexpected and aggressive move if it is true. It might mean a cheap home console, or it could be that the system has a lot of pep.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U

To be fair to Pachter, he did say the Wii U will be a Dreamcast for Nintendo if it is a X360 with a tablet controller that is priced more than US$150. It's a hypothetical. Also, he goes on to say (what we all know :p) that he knows nothing.

Sure, it is annoying that he doesn't seem to know of the rumblings and rumors of the Wii U's capabilities, but whatever.

2497
Unreal Engine 3 was the most popular engine of this generation, but I think it also had the least imaginative games and the art design usually had a very similar feel across the games that used it. I hope another engine is more popular next gen.
Alice: Madness Returns, Asura's Wrath, Mirror's Edge, and TERA look similar to each other?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games#Unreal_Engine_3

Granted most of the UE3 games look like Gears of War, but that is not the fault of the engine.

2498
I wonder if Microsoft is thinking about having consumers come in stores with USB memory drives or flash memory cards to grab the game data and then install it to the Durango hard drive. That sounds like too much of a hassle compared to buying a plastic box with a plastic disc in it.

A follow up or successor to PokePark? Or maybe a spin on Pokemon Ranger? It's most likely something new. I'm just curious if you will be controlling a human or a Pokemon.

EDIT: Or maybe it's not a game, as implied by the last sentence. Maybe it's some sort of organized outdoor event or theme park.
