Nintendo Gaming / Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X. Monolith Soft's Next Game.
« on: August 06, 2015, 11:24:01 PM »
This tangentially related to the Xenoblade Chronicles series:
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/08/chris_pranger_from_nintendo_treehouse_discusses_harsh_realities_of_localisation

Quote
To reiterate his point, Mr Pranger used Xenoblade Chronicles as an example, explaining it wasn’t popular enough in the West to justify a local release, and pointing fingers at Nintendo of Europe:

You look at something like even Xenoblade Chronicles. People love that game, you know, within a certain group. That game is not the type of game that just pulls in enough to justify the costs on that. So that’s like, we got it in the States by luck, that NoE decided “Oh, we’ll take the fall. We’ll localize that.” Okay, cause someone is going to have to eat the costs somewhere, because that game is guaranteed to not sell enough to justify how big that game is. You know, hundreds of hours, all voiced. That’s a lot of money that goes into that.
And people are like “Why do you guys hate money?” We don’t. That’s why you literally can’t make everything. And people don’t like finding out that their fanbase is actually too small to justify the costs of the thing they want.

Pranger was interviewed on the Part Time Gamers Podcast: http://www.chaingangmedia.com/ptg76/
I'll give it a listen later.

Basically, Nintendo has not money for those niche Japanese games we want (yet somehow companies such as Atlus and XSeed do). To be fair to Nintendo of America, they are recorded to have lost money last year on the investor reports. Also, Nintendo as a whole has just come out of several years of losses.

... or that they hate Nintendo for whatever reason.  ...

Reading the book "Console Wars" by Blake Harris (which I am struggling to maintain interest in reading) and how Nintendo was so controlling with the Nintendo Entertainment System puts this sentiment in a new light. I'm beginning to wonder if the restrictive and monopolistic polices Nintendo had used to resurrect the home console market of North America has left a great wound in Nintendo's third-party relations that never truly healed.

One striking moment in the book is in the Electronic Arts chapter where founder Trip Hawkins is portrayed as being furious at the restrictive polices of Nintendo's and Sega's home consoles. This is in contrast to the freedom Electronic Arts has with making computer games. Given how many computer game developers and publishers have transitioned and now rule the software sales charts of home consoles, one wishes or imagines a Nintendo that catered to at least some of their whims.

The bucket is weird, I'm having a hard time being accurate with it.

If you have little experience with judicious use of the Roller's fling, I can see how it might be difficult. It's useful to spend some time in the testing range to become familiar with the bucket's arc and hit box. As with all the other weapons in the game, you shouldn't need to arc your shot if you have direct line of sight. Just put the targeting cursor over the bad guy and let the bucket sloosh.

Due to what I assume is some leveling bug (I went from 20 to 24 in one Tower Control win), I got to Level 25 an hour after. I got the Armor Helmet from Hero Mode. I assume you get the other pieces as you progress every 5 levels.

The bucket (Sloosher) is a very cool and unique weapon type. It's arching shot, big coverage, and decent range looks good. It's a two-shot splat and the fire rate isn't that fast. It's like a focused version of the fling from a Dynamo roller.

The Splatling is so interesting for Splatoon because it's a rapid-firing weapon that has great range and accuracy. For those frustrated by Splatoon not having a weapon that performs similarly to reliable assault rifles of other shooter games may find some solace in the Splatling. Granted the Splatling operates on a charging mechanic similar to the Charger, but the charge time is much quicker. Also, a quarter or third charge will produce enough fast-firing ink to splat a bad guy under your sights.

One of my Tower Control losses featured a tower of Splatlings shooting out so much accurate ink. Scary.

EDIT: The new Urchin Underpass is fantastic. So much more open, new lanes, and new sight lines.

By "Special Edition", I'm sure they just mean they're releasing an edition AT ALL since NoA is seemingly no longer in the business of releasing and selling games, and are probably only touching this game under protest.

Ha! Come on now, we're getting something special. It will most likely be worthless trinkets that are lesser to other regions, but it's something to be a bit happy about.

I want to believe, man, but technically a Gamestop exclusive release ala Xenoblade 1 would be considered a Special Edition and NoA has a pretty thorough track record lately of getting completely outclassed by their European counterpart.

Can't argue against that. I have low expectations; I bet we won't even get the map. I just hope the international versions get the May 2015 DLC for free. I seriously doubt that, though.

EU, AU, and US will be getting a special edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X. EU will also be getting a Wii U bundle and the first Xenoblade Chronicle as an eShop download.

America will probably get the game with no spiffy extras, as per usual. We probably won't even get the original game on the eShop.

Yeah. The New Xbox Experience dashboard update should come Fall 2015.

1361
I'll be the counter-point here in that I enjoyed the presentation. Scalebound and Crackdown 3 have tipped the scales slightly in Xbox One's favor as I have yet to commit to either a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or a new PC.

I have yet to be truly tired of the shooty-bang-bang as I thought Quantum Break, Homefront: The Revolution, and other shooters look kinda neat.

Home and Garden Television presents Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

Even though this spin-off looks like it recycles a bit much, it's good to hear that it is an interesting and entertaining experience. Not sure if I want to jump in it, though. Hmm, I might since I've enjoyed watching House Hunters International quite a bit.

If there's not enough corporate speak in your day
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/csr/en/index.html

The Nintendo 2015 Company Social Responsibility report! A lot of amiibo talk, something about conflict minerals, and data on maternity leave.

One interesting fact is that Nintendo has 5,120 employees world wide.

Preorders? Have the amiibo-calypse taught them nothing? Or is the fever finally breaking?

The translation of the notes read that players won't gain points or ranks in Private Matches. I hope that's inaccurate because it would be nice to earn coins by playing only with friends. It's not completely unexpected, but disappointing if true.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 438: Spiritual Predecessor
« on: August 03, 2015, 12:34:28 AM »
Welcome to a new era, somewhat similar to the old era.

Ah, Destiny and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. When Johnny talked of his desire to only play through content once during an MH4U discussion, this is what I expected when Destiny came back on the podcast. It appears more and more video games will have this grind for loot and achievements. You have series such as Battlefield bragging how much more stuff you will be able to unlock. I am surprised that Splatoon hits it as hard as it does, though I shouldn't be given Nintendo has Animal Crossing.

Since we're talking MonHun again, I believe the in-universe explanation of the quest fee is that it takes the village/guild resources to transport the hunter to the hunting area as well as pay for fainting insurance. In the quest rewards, you do get the quest fee back. Still, it is another hassle to a game full of hassles. As for why there are two different shops and quest boards, the Caravan and Gathering Hall boards are the Single Player and Multiplayer split of the game. The two different item shops are on different progression trees too. If your Gathering Hall progress is leaving the Caravan progress in the dust, the Gathering Hall Item Shop will have way more advanced items in stock. These won't translate over to the item shops for Caravan. MONSTER HUNTER!

Really enjoyed the overview of Keiji Inafune's latest antics. While some people hold respect for him because of Mega Man, I find it hard to do so given the results of most of the recent games he is associated with.

I don't see how the Tournament Mode is a rumored feature when it was announced way back in that 50 Fact Extravaganza last year. Anyway, neat to have new stages for sale.

TalkBack / Re: Final Fantasy Explorers Localization Announced
« on: July 30, 2015, 04:27:52 PM »
From what I remember on articles that skimmed Japanese impressions, Final Fantasy Explorers tilts more to the Action-RPG side in its pursuit to be a MonHun clone. So, if you found how Monster Hunter carries itself to be too idiosyncratic, then Explorers might be more palatable.

Good news to see. I was worried that the game might never come over.

First draft is best draft.

I'm curious as to what Project Guard will become. Maybe it will be a small eShop game or be built up to something more.

Project Giant Robo's slide in to the vapor is probably for the best. The early footage in 2014 looked a bit too unwieldy.

The Yo-kai will not be stopped. The PS3 and PS4 SKUs of the latest Sengoku Basara game follow. Splatoon is still sticking around.

Splatoon MVP!

If I recall correctly, Chris Kohlar predicted on RFN that the first quarter of Nintendo's new financial year would be a loss for them. Nice to see that didn't come true.

I guess maybe Sony has more muscle and/or savvy to bring the PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest XI over to the Americas, Europe, and Oceania? Certainly, the platform is in more dire need of a games and JRPGs than the 3DS.

I don't expect to see DQ XI 3DS in English, but I really hope it does. That polygons and sprites split between the two screens looks so good.

Well said.

This recent news doesn't tell much about the NX other than it might having two Dragon Quest games on it. But for now I'm going to be an idiot and think that this means the NX is a home console similar to the PS4.
